[IslamCity] NEWS: Saudi Women Med Students Help at Haj Health Clinics

2005-01-29 Thread Abdul Alim

Wednesday, 26, January, 2005 (15, Dhul Hijjah, 1425)

Women Med Students Help at Haj Health ClinicsSaeed Al-Khotani, Arab News

MINA, 26 January 2005 — As pilgrims made their way through the rituals of the Haj this year, they were joined by a pioneering group of women Saudi medical school students who volunteered their time to take care of those in need while sharpening the skills they will need as doctors.
Dr. Taha Al-Khateeb, supervisor general of health centers for the holy sites during Haj 1425, said the program was voluntary and of limited scope this year. He hopes the program would be expanded in coming years, as the women get a chance to provide services in their field of specialization under direct medical supervision.
Despite the challenges, students were excited by the chance to help and got support from their families. “When I raised the subject with my family, I didn’t meet any objection. On the contrary, they encouraged me,” said Muna Ahmad Muhammad Amin, a second-year student at the College of Medicine. “My mom had some reservations, but that’s a normal feeling for mothers.”
For the young student, it was a test of her fortitude. “I came to see, participate, assist, contribute and benefit despite the difficulties that face us during the Haj due to overcrowding and pressure of work,” she said. “If I succumbed to those hardships, I would have returned home as there was nothing to force me to stay.”
She stayed.
For some of the med students, it was more of a family affair. “It never occurred to me that I would be participating in health services during the Haj were it not for the encouragement of my mom who’s a consultant in family medicine. She is participating in the Haj this year as a technical supervisor in the Health Centers Supervision Committee,” said Rana Abdullah Rukn, a fifth-year med student. “Although I had some fears, I was eager to participate, as it’s a great opportunity. It supports the education I receive in the College of Medicine lecture halls.”
Veteran volunteers say it’s a great thing to do each year.
“I was impressed by the idea of working during the Haj even before I joined the College of Medicine, as my father is a doctor in the Ministry of Health and was director general of health centers during Haj,” said Maram Taha Al-Khateeb, a third-year medical student.
“My father works in health services every year during Haj, so I participated even before getting admission in the College of Medicine. This is the third year I’m helping with these services. Whoever comes to participate in the Haj health services for the first time will want to participate again.”
And the young women carry out meaningful tasks in which they have received training, freeing up the professionals for more serious cases.
“I used the opportunity to get acquainted with the nature of work in the health centers in Mina and Muzdalifa,” said Rana Rukn. “I worked in the pharmacy and organized the waiting patients in front of the clinics. I got to watch the doctors checking the patients. I saw cases of lacerations and muscle pain due to walking for long distances as well as severe coughing due to the cold weather.”
Muna Amin also got to work with physicians.
“I organized the waiting patients when there was overcrowding,” she said. “If the situation permitted, I listened to the doctor’s explanations of the simple cases — how to diagnose and treat them as well as prescribe the medicines.”
The more experience the students have, the more help they can offer.
“In view of my past participation , I carried out various duties,” said Maram Al-Khateeb. “Last year, I prepared solutions, gave intramuscular injections and fit oxygen masks. The nurses helped train me. But this year, I started learning how to diagnose the ailments and understand what the patient wants to say even if he cannot speak Arabic.”
The physicians in the clinics realize these young women are going to be the doctors of tomorrow — critically needed throughout the Kingdom — and they use the opportunity to give them every bit of training they can.
“The doctors treat us as their daughters,” said Maram Al-Khateeb said. “They treat us with respect. They provide us with assistance and don’t view us as mere volunteer trainees. The doctors listen to our views and explain what we haven’t understood.”
Although the program is both limited and voluntary, the Ministry of Health shows its appreciation to these trailblazing young women who demonstrate both great courage and commitment to others by volunteering.
“One of the reasons I took part in the program again and urged my colleagues to take part were the letters of thanks and appreciation I received last year from Health Minister Dr. Hamad Al-Manie and Dr. Mansour Al-Hawasi, undersecretary at the Ministry of Health, for my participation during the Haj,” said Maram Al-Khateeb.

[IslamCity] RE: [Islam_1_God_1_Religion_1_Truth] Can the dead hear us?

2005-01-29 Thread M. Malhar

The Messenger of Allah is unaware of his nation
(1) At the Hawd (Pooh of Kawthar)
Narrated Sahl Ibn Saad (radhi allahu anhu) The Messenger of Allah said: I
will precede you to the fountain in Paradise. Whoever passes by me will
drink and never again experience thirst. Some people whom I will know and
who will know me, will come to me, hut a barrier will appear between them
and me. I will say, Verily! they are among my followers.' It will be said
to me: you do not know what innovations they introduced after you
[Saheeh-al Bukhari(Eng. Trans.) vol. 8, p.381-382, no: 585 and Saheeh Muslim
(Eng. Trans.) vol.4, p.1236, no.5682], Sunan Ibn Majah and Musnad Imaam
Ahrnad.

This Hadeeth is a clear proof that the Messenger of Allah is completely
unaware of his Ummah and their action after his death. Thus, on the Day of
Judgment, even though Allah's Messenger will recognize the people of his
Urnrnuh by their outward appearances (marks of wudhu 225) he will be unaware
of their actions.

(2) Prophet Eesa is unaware of his nation even though, he did not die
Unlike, Prophet Muhammad (Sallahu alihi wasallam). Prophet Eesa (Peace be
upon him) never died, nor entered the realm of Barzakh 226. He was only
raised to the Heavens, yet he is unaware of his nation. On the Day of
Judgment, when Allah will question him about the deeds of his nations, he
will declare that he was only a witness over them, as long as, he was among
them. Allah says in the Qur'aan that when He will ask Eesa (Peace be upon
him) on the Day of Judgment, 0 Eesa son of Mary! Did you say unto men:
Worship me and my mother as gods besides Allah? Eesa ' will say: Glory be
to You! it was not for me to say what I had no right (to say)... Never did 1
say to them, except what You did command me to say: Worship Allah my Lord
and your Lord; and I was a witness over them whilst I dwelt amongst them;
but when You took me up, You were the Watcher over them...
[Soorah Al-Ma'idah (5): 116-117]

The above two points clearly mention that the Messengers are unaware of
their nation after death and maintain no connection to the world whatsoever.

225: Abu Hurayrah (radhi allahu anhu) reported that once Allah's Messenger
visited a graveyard and said: Peace be on you - the dwelling of believing
folks. Certainly, we will follow you when Allah wills. I wish that we could
see our brother. He was asked: Aren't we your brothers, 0 Messenger of
Allah (Sallahu alihi wasallam)! He replied: Rather, you are my
companions, but our brothers have not come yet and I will precede them to
the Hawd (on the Day of Judgment). He was asked:
How would you know those who have not yet come of your Urnmah. 0 Messenger
of Allah?' He said: If a main had horses with white faces and legs among
horses that are totally black, would he be able to distinguish his horses?
He was told'. Yes, 0 Allah's Messenger (Sallahu alihi wasallam).' He said
So verily, they will come on the Day of Resurrection with white faces,
arms, and legs from wudhu (he repeated this three times). And I will precede
them to [ Hawd. And indeed, some men among you will be turned away from my
Hawd like a lost camel is turned away (in order not to bring disease to the
cattle). I would call them, 'Come forth, come forth!' But I will he told,
'They have changed (your religion) after you, and continued to go back upon
their heels. So, I would say, Verily, let them get lost, let their, get
lost, [ Saheeh Muslim]

226 ...they said (in boast): ' we killed Christ Jesus, the son of Mary -
the Messenger of Allah but they killed him not, nor crucified him ... Nay'!
Allah raised him up unto Himself; and Allah is Exalted in Power Wise.

 (3) The dead are unaware of the outside world
In general, the dead whether righteous or not, are unaware of this world.
The Sufis, however, claim that their Shaikhs remain aware and in their
senses even in the grave. Following are two examples quoted from Fazaazl-e
Aamaal..(Thabliq nisaab)

1. Once a group of Arabs went to visit the grave of a very generous person
and stayed there for the night. One of them in a dream saw the man of the
grave who asked him to sell his camel for his Bakhti camel (Bakith is a good
kind of camel). The man agreed and the man of the grave stood and
slaughtered the camel. When the man woke up, he found it bleeding. He
slaughtered it and distributed the meat. When the group returned then at a
stage, a man came riding a Bakhti camel and enquired whether among them was
a man of such and such name. The man who saw the dream came forward and said
he was that man. The man related his dream. The camel rider said the man of
the grave was his father and he had directed him in a dream to give this
camel to him He gave the animal to the man and went away.
Fazaail-e-Aamaal English Translation (Virtues of Charity). Chapter.7, story
no.16, p.l93 (New Edition 1982, Published by Dini Book Depot Delhi).

2 .A virtuous man once sat down near the grave of a generous person and
related that he needed

[IslamCity] Forgive Debt, if Debtor is Poor

2005-01-29 Thread Syeda Muneeba Masood

FORGIVE THE DEBT, IF THE DEBTOR IS POORAuthor: Syeda Muneeba Masoodhttp://groups.msn.com/islamisuniversal

Assalam o Alaikum,Dear Sisters BrothersAllah is kind, all merciful and forgiving and that’s what he wants us to be towards His creatures. Creditors often have rude behavior towards debtors, which is not liked in Islam. Creditors should give time to debtors to pay back the debt and loan. If debtor is poor and needy then creditor should behave leniently towards him, instead of cursing or tensing him for debts. Our beloved Prophet Mohammad (SallAllaho Alaihi Wasallam) has advised us to forgive the debt and not to take it back, if the debtor is poor. By doing so one can earn high rewards from Allah in the life hereafter and blessings and mercy of Almighty in this world as well.

HADITHNarrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle said, "A man used to give loans to the people and used to say to his servant, 'If the debtor is poor, forgive him, so that Allah may forgive us.' So when he met Allah (after his death), Allah forgave him." (Book #56, Hadith #687)
The above Hadith is enough to explain the virtues of forgiving debts and caring the poor. The wealth of Heaven is never ending, strive for that. Don’t run after the wealth of this Earth which is nothing but worthless than the wing of mosquito.http://groups.yahoo.com/group/islamisuniversal

[IslamCity] ISLAM GAINS TOEHOLD IN MEXICO'S ZAPATISTAT COUNTRY

2005-01-29 Thread Assalamu Aleikum

Islam Gains Toehold in Mexico's Zapatista Country
By Alistair Bell
Reuters
Tue Jan 25, 2005 12:35 PM ET
http://www.reuters.com/printerFriendlyPopup.jhtml?type=ourWorldNewsstoryID=7425634

SAN CRISTOBAL DE LAS CASAS, Mexico (Reuters) - Islam
has joined a battle for the hearts and minds of
Mexico's volatile Tzotzil Indians in Chiapas state,
home of Zapatista rebels and a hotbed of sectarian
strife between Christians.

In an unlikely meeting of two worlds, an idealistic
Muslim sect has converted some 300 Tzotzils, a Maya
Indian group known for drink-fueled fiestas and
religious fervor.

It was difficult to learn the prayers in Arabic at
first but now I have them in my heart, said Muhammad
Emin Lopez, 46, a Tzotzil fruit merchant who boasts
that his conversion to Islam in 1995 was the state's
first.

He prays five times a day as required in Islam, has
gone on the obligatory haj pilgrimage to Mecca and
attends a small mosque in a cornfield on the outskirts
of the hill town of San Cristobal de las Casas.

Beside the mosque, a Tzotzil woman dressed in colorful
Indian garb and known by the Muslim name Karima washes
clothes in a stream near ramshackle wooden houses.

The growth of Islam in such a restive area has raised
the eyebrows of Mexico's intelligence agency, wary of
possible terrorist activity aimed at the neighboring
United States.

But the Tzotzil Muslims have little interest in holy
war, having seen religious and political conflict
close up.

Many are former evangelical Protestants who were
thrown out of a nearby town by fellow Tzotzils who
practice a mixture of Catholicism and ancient Maya
Indian rites in a conflict that began in the 1970s.

Some 30,000 Protestants have been forced from their
homes and more than 100 have died in sectarian
violence.

People are full of darkness in Chiapas, said Lopez.
The Catholics and Protestants have fought each other
a lot and the Zapatistas only want to know about war,
not Islam, he said.

Several dozen Spanish missionaries who introduced
Islam to Chiapas and still live here hold radical
political and economic views such as wanting to do
away with currencies, taxes and the nation state, but
church leaders and academics say the group has no
connection to violence.

The Spaniards, members of a group of mostly Western
converts known as the Murabitun, failed in a bid to
ally themselves with Zapatistas 10 years ago and have
been relatively quiet since.

The missionaries, also active in the United States and
Europe, suffered a blow when Lopez and some 80 other
Tzotzils split from them several years ago in an
argument over land and jobs and began worshiping on
their own.

NEVER ASSIMILATED

Now numbering some 330,000, the Tzotzils in the
mountains of Chiapas have never been fully assimilated
into the Catholic, Hispanic world since Spain
conquered Mexico in the 1500s.

Along with other poor Maya Indians, they form the
backbone of the Zapatista guerrillas, who staged an
uprising in Chiapas in 1994 and have now retired to
bases in the jungle.

The Catholic Church has only a tenuous hold over the
Tzotzils, some of whom sacrifice chickens in church
and down moonshine known as posh during nominally
Christian rites.

The Tzotzils, like many of Mexico's 12 million
indigenous people, have a hunger of the spirit.

They are people who become attached to religion no
matter where it comes from. Islam presented itself
just as any other option could have come along as
well, said Felipe Arizmendi, Catholic bishop of San
Cristobal de las Casas.

Experts says the Maya have become adroit at adapting
to different beliefs and allegiances as the outside
world has encroached on their jungles and mountains.

That's why they have survived so long. They've been
able to be at the forefront of whatever proposal or
political project that's been offered to them for 500
years, said anthropologist Gaspar Morquecho.

That said, surprised Zapatista rebel leaders turned
down the Murabitun missionaries' invitation to convert
to Islam during a meeting in Chiapas in February 1995.

They had an initial contact with the Zapatista army
and failed, said Morquecho, author of an academic
paper on the Chiapas Muslims.

Since then, the Murabitun have kept a low profile in
Chiapas, setting up a mosque, madrassah Islamic
school and several small businesses.

Headscarved indigenous women bake and bearded Mexicans
serve at a pizzeria in San Cristobal de las Casas
owned by Murabitun members. Pepperoni pizzas are off
the menu, likely due to the Islamic prohibition on
eating pork.

Founded by a Scotsman who turned to Islam during a
stay in Morocco in the 1960s, the Murabitun are from
the orthodox Sunni branch of Islam but have
incorporated some mystical Sufi practices.

They are highly critical of the charging of interest
rates as un-Islamic and advocate scrapping currencies,
taxes and the nation state, to be replaced with
Islamic emirates trading in gold coins.

Our model is not ideological or utopian but is based
on the

[IslamCity] Is it possible for me to declare the Shahada in writing?

2005-01-29 Thread pop_odi

Assalam o Alaikum Brothers Sisters:

During the Hajj Holidays, I preferred to stay at home. I just kept
myself busy. I read the Holy Quran and some of the articles written
by Jamaal al-Din Zarabozo. His articles taught me a lot. And I
learned that by declaring the Shahada is only effective if that
person especially a Non-Muslim, has the basic and general knowledge
of what is meant by the shahadah and its prerequisites. These
prerequisites are as follows: knowledge, certainty, acceptance,
submission and compliance, truthfulness, sincerity, love, deny every
other object of worship, adheres to the shahadah until he dies.

Is it possible for me to declare the Shahada in writing? Say in this
forum…

[IslamCity] 12 Tips For Muslim Youth

2005-01-29 Thread 03.05 Noushad T. V.

12
Tips for Muslim Youth
Why should you, a young
Muslim, be helping to bring your friends closer to Allah?
After all, you've got
your own struggles to deal with: trying to explain why you pray to hostile
teachers, Hijab discrimination, standing up in class when the professor attacks
Islam, dealing with parents who think you've gone nuts because you're growing a
beard, or all the other difficulties faced by a number of practicing Muslim
youth?
Islam was never meant
to be an individualistic faith, reserved for the "chosen few". Muslims have a
duty to spread the Deen, and practicing Muslim youth, whether beginners,
activists or leaders have a crucial role to play.
"Allah has put them in
a position that perhaps no one else is in," notes Sheema Khan, former Muslim
Youth of North America (MYNA) advisor for eastern Canada. "They have the means
to communicate with their peers, they have an understanding of what they're
going through plus they have the guidance of Islam."
Who is your childhood
friend, who would rather spend Fridays at MacDonald's than the Masjid, or your
classmate who is Muslim in name and only knows that "Muslims don't eat pork"
going to listen to: the nice Imam of the Masjid who would freak out if he saw
the way they were dressed and talked or you who may have grown up with them,
joked with them, or see them everyday in school?
The answer is obvious:
you.
Don't panic. Here are
some tips and advice which can help from other Muslims, many of whom have been
there and done that:
Tip # 1
: Make Your Intention Sincere
All work we do should
ideally be for the sake of Allah. That includes the task of bringing someone
closer to Allah. That of course means this should not be connected to arrogance,
thinking you're the teacher and everyone else should be lucky you've embarked on
a crusade to save them. Guidance is from Allah. Make Dua and make sincere
efforts and remember Allah can also misguide you if He wills (we seek refuge in
Allah from that).
Tip # 2
: Practice What YOu Preach
Not practicing what you
preach is wrong and you will lose the confidence of anyone, young or old, once
they figure you out. Don't do it.
Tip # 3
: Use The Quran Seerah (biography of the Prphet peace be upon him) As
Da'wah Guides
Read and understand
those chapters of the Quran which talk about how the Prophets presented the
message of Islam to their people. Read the Seerah (for some good Seerah books)to
see especially how the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)
brought Islam to so many different people, including young people.

As well, talk to Da'wah
workers, and check out manuals they may have written, like Yahiya Emerick's How
to Tell Others About Islam.
Tip # 4
: Talk To People As If You Really Dont Know Them
Don't assume you know
someone just by looking at them. You don't know that the Muslim girl in your
homeroom who walks through the school's hallways as if they were fashion show
catwalks (see Ambe Rehman's perspective on this) is not someone you can talk to
about Allah because she looks like a snob. Or that the Muslim guy who you've
never seen at Juma at your university is a "bad Muslim". Maybe he was never
really taught Islam and has no idea what importance Friday prayers have in
Islam, especially for Muslim men.
Tip # 5
: Smile
Did you know the
Prophet was big on smiling? But many "practicing" Muslims seem to have "their
faces on upside down" as one speaker once said-frowning and serious.
Smiling, being polite
and kind are all part of the manners of the Prophet, which we must exercise in
our daily lives. If we want to approach others with Islam, we have to make
ourselves approachable. Smiling is key to this.
But note that being
approachable does not mean being flirtations with the other gender. There are
Islamic rules for how men and women should deal with each other that have to be
respected. Dawah is no excuse to have long and private conversations and
meetings with the other sex, for example. Set up a system where someone
expressing an interest in Islam is referred to someone of the same sex.

Tip # 6
: Take The Initiative Hang Out With Them
Take the first step and
invite someone you may have spoken to a couple of times to sit at lunch
together, to check out a hockey game or invite them over for Iftar in Ramadan.
Also, share difficulties, sorrows and frustrations. Help with homework, be a
shoulder to cry on when depression hits, or just plain listen when your friend
is upset, discuss common problems and KEEP THEIR SECRETS. There are few things
as annoying as a snitch and backstabber. But an important note: if the problem
is of a serious nature,(i.e. your friend is thinking of committing suicide or is
taking drugs), notify and consult an adult immediately.

Tip # 7
: Show Them Islam Is Relevant Today, Right Here, Right Now
Young people may think
Islam is too "old fashioned" and not in tune with the

[IslamCity] An American in Makkah

An American in MakkahThe Hajj experience of Muslim convert Michael Wolfe
I am a Muslim. I revere the same God as my Christian mother and my Jewish father. Allah is simply the Arabic word for the God of Abraham, Moses and Jesus. I find the absence of priests and rabbis attractive. Islam means acknowledging the oneness of God, surrendering to it, cooperating with the way things are. Being a Muslim, God is as near as the veins in my neck. During the Hajj each year, millions of faithful come to Mecca. The men and women wear simple lengths of unstitched cloth. The garments are a symbol. The person who wears them agrees not to harm plants and animals or fellow pilgrims. No arguments, no violence. We agree to keep the peace. The garments are a great leveler too. Who can tell rich from poor? Millions Descend on Mecca Here I join people from all over the earth, all these human beings drawn together by the call of an idea, by the oneness of God. We have left daily life behind and come to a place hardly
belonging to this world, a place filled by the almost tangible presence of God. To preserve its sanctity and protect pilgrims, the sacred territory around Mecca is forbidden to all but Muslims. It lies hidden in the mountains of Saudi Arabia 50 miles from the Red Sea, a modern city of 1.2 million people. To walk around the block in Mecca is to walk around the world. I step out the door and for 15 yards, I’m in Indonesia. Down the street past a couple of stores and it’s Africa. Pakistan is just around the corner and then I’m in Bangladesh. A vast majority of the world’s one billion Muslims—80 percent—now live outside the Middle East. There are more than five million in the United States.
Muslims Perform Sacred Duties The duties of the Hajj are symbolic of the story and obligations of Islam. Before prayer, Muslims wash, representing ritual purity. The walk around the Ka’ba—the black stone block in the great mosque—is an _expression_ of our desire to put God at the center of our lives. Pilgrims also make a journey to Mina and to the plain of Arafat, 13 miles outside of Mecca. Making our way on foot, we trade city streets and buildings for tents and carpets on the sand of the barren plain, giving up our usual comforts, getting back to basics. On the plain of Arafat, we perform the central obligation of the pilgrimage, to be here together from noon until sunset. There is no ceremony. We stroll, we pray, we meditate. The Hajj goes on inside the hearts and thoughts of each of us. This is a rehearsal for that day of judgment. How will we account for our acts? Have I injured anyone? Have I been grateful enough for
the simple gifts of life, water, food, friends, family and the air I breath? Before leaving Mecca, we visit the Ka’ba one last time. For most of us, this will be our last glimpse of the shrine. There is an old proverb—before you visit Mecca, it beckons you. When you leave it behind, it calls you forever.Posted By: Syeda Muneeba MasoodSource: Islam for Today

{Invite (mankind, O Muhammad ) to the Way of your Lord (i.e. Islam) with wisdom (i.e. with the Divine Inspiration and the Qur'an) and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better. Truly, your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His Path, and He is the Best Aware of those who are guided.}
(Holy Quran-16:125)

{And who is better in speech than he who [says: My Lord is Allah (believes in His Oneness), and then stands straight (acts upon His Order), and] invites (men) to Allah's (Islamic Monotheism), and does righteous deeds, and says: I am one of the Muslims.} (Holy Quran-41:33)

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: By Allah, if Allah guides one person by you, it is better for you than the best types of camels. [al-Bukhaaree, Muslim]

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also said, Whoever calls to guidance will have a reward similar to the reward of the one who follows him, without the reward of either of them being lessened at all.
[Muslim, Ahmad, Aboo Daawood, an-Nasaa'ee, at-Tirmidhee, Ibn Maajah]
