KNOW THE RULINGS SERIES[73] [SINS OF TONGUE ]

My mother is still alive and is over one hundred years old. She is in a difficult situation because she cannot understand things, and she asks whether it is evening when it is morning, and she repeats words more than five times. She cannot move from where she is, and if she has been sleeping she is not able to sit up, etc. Her children answer all her questions, but their answers may be lies, such as when she asks them in the evening whether it is the morning, and they tell her yes, even though it is the evening, and so on. My question is: if they tell her lies,
are they sinning or not? The second question is: is there any kafaarah (expiation) which they should pay to make up for her fasts and prayers, or not? Please advise us, may Allaah reward you with good.
Praise be to Allaah. You should not tell her lies; you should tell her the truth, because telling her lies does not serve any purpose or benefit her in any way, or make her happy.

With regard to prayer and fasting, there is no kafaarah to be paid, and there is no sin on her, because she has become like a child. So long as she cannot tell what is what, and her feelings and mind have changed, she is not obliged to pray or fast, because she is not held accountable for that. She is now like a little child who is free of responsibility and there is no sin involved, in sha Allaah. And Allaah knows best.
What should be done with a person who calls a Muslim a dog, pig, or other offensive word? Is it a sin?Praise be to Allaah.
It is a sin and he should be punished (ta’zeer – punishment to be specified by the qaadi/Muslim judge). He also has to repent. And Allaah knows best.Fataawa al-Imaam al-Nawawi, p. 224
I get angry easily and at times I go in a rage and start cursing the person I am angry at in private. When I cool down, I say "astagfirruallah," and I keep making an intention to not do it again. I know cursing is haraam. I hate what I do, and I wish I can control myself. I want to know how does one repent for cursing someone in anger. The person does not hear me say these things but I still feel bad about them. And do I have tell the person that I cursed them in private? Can I just keep it to myself as to not create animosity between me and the person? Can I give sadaqah to cancel the harm I did? What do I need to do to fix the problem. I want to stop, and I keep making dua' - but for now I want to repent for the times I cursed people in anger. Also does Allah accept my curses in anger? I am feeling very
depressed over this issue. I feel bad when I stand for prayer. I wish to really repent and feel content about my repentance. Jazak Allahu Khairan.
Praise be to Allaah. You have to restrain your anger, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “…who repress anger, and who pardon men; verily, Allaah loves Al-Muhsinoon (the gooddoers).” [Aal ‘Imraan 3:134]
“And those who avoid the greater sins, and AlFawaahish (illegal sexual intercourse), and when they are angry, they forgive.” [al-Shooraa 42:37]This is because when a person does not restrain his anger, he insults, curses, swears and hits. Anger may be a door to all kinds of evil. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) often advised people not to get angry. Al-Bukhaari narrated in al-Saheeh (6116) from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that a man said to the Prophet (peace and
blessings of Allaah be upon him), “Advise me.” He said: “Do not get angry.” The man repeated his request several times, and he said, “Do not get angry.”
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) regarded the one who controls himself when he is angry as being the strongest of men. Al-Bukhaari narrated in al-Saheeh (6114) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The strong man is not the one who can wrestle (fight); the strong man is the one who controls himself at the time of anger.”
Al-Haafiz Ibn Hajar (may Allaah have mercy on him) made some important points in Fath al-Baari (10/520) in his commentary on the hadeeth “Do not get angry”.
He said: “Al-Tabaraani quoted the hadeeth of Sufyaan ibn ‘Abd-Allaah al-Thaqafi: I said, O Messenger of Allaah, tell me something that will be of benefit to me, and make it brief and concise. He said, “Do not get angry, and Paradise will be yours.” It was also narrated that Abu’l-Dardaa’ said: I said, O Messenger of Allaah, tell me of a deed which will earn me admission to Paradise. He said, Do not get angry… Al-Khattaabi said: The meaning of the phrase ‘Do not get angry’ is, Avoid the things that cause anger and do not expose yourself to that which provokes it. Anger itself could not have been forbidden, because it is something natural which cannot be removed from human nature. Someone else said: what is meant is that which can be achieved by training oneself… It was said that it means, Do not do that which
anger provokes you to do. Ibn Battaal

[IslamCity] Malaysia - Weekend seminar with Dr. Azzam Tamimi

A WEEKEND SEMINAR WITH DR. AZZAM
TAMIMI

ORGANISERS :
Muslim Professionals Forum (MPF) Jamaah Islah Malaysia (JIM)
Malaysian National Insurance (MNI)

THEME : ISLAMIC
POLITICAL THEORY

DATE : 2 – 3
April 2005 ( Sat Sun ), 9 am – 6 pm

VENUE : Dewan Sri Pinang, MNI Twin
Towers, Kuala Lumpur (sponsored by
MNI)

The aftermath of September 11, 2001 has much moulded the
multitudes of analyses of the
interplay between Islam and contemporary politics. The islamophobes have
condemned Islam to the backyard of history, irrelevant to post-modern society
and hostile to the egalitarian pursuits of freedom and justice. Whilst others,
albeit few, have rushed to her
defense as a religion of harmony and peaceful
coexistence.

A salient deficiency of these political commentaries, have been
their inability, conscious or otherwise, to discourse in terms of the voluminous
and sophisticated traditions of the Islamic political heritage.

We hope to fill this void by facilitating a just, mature and well
developed understanding of the history of Islamic political thought. Classical
and contemporary Muslim scholars have continously drawn inspiration from the
Quran and traditions of the prophet and his companions to construct robust
political theories and systems, alive to the spirit of the faith and the demands
of the times. A deep appreciation and profound understanding of this discipline
of Islamic political thought as promulgated by these sincere, committed and
knowledgeable Muslim thinkers is a key objective of this
seminar.

OUR GUEST
SPEAKER - DR AZZAM TAMIMI

Dr. Azzam is most qualified to help us work towards these goals of
our seminar. A doctorate holder in political theory from the University of
Westminster, he is the Director of the Institute of Islamic Political Thought
based in London. He is widely respected for his grasp of both the western and
Islamic traditions of political philosophy. His views on contemporary political
issues in the Muslim world is sought after by the print media and news networks.
He has travelled extensively, his latest appointment being Visiting Professor to
the University of Kyoto, Japan.

Dr. Azzam is a prolific writer. He coedited the book “Islam and Secularism in the Middle
East” with John Esposito. And his latest book analyses the person of exiled
Tunisian leader Rachid Ghannouchi entitled “ A Democrat within Islamism”
published by Oxford University Press. Dr. Azzam is a leading advocate of political reform, human rights and
democracy and is currently the spokesman for the Muslim Association of Britain (
MAB ).

[IslamCity] Angel Gabriel confirmed correctness of answers

2005-02-26 Thread Syeda Muneeba Masood

The Millennium Biography of Prophet Muhammad (SallAllaho Alaihi Wasallam)www.muhammad.comhttp://groups.msn.com/IslamisUniversalARCH ANGEL GABRIEL’S DISCRIPTION OF THE PRINCIPALS OF ISLAM:
Omar, the son of Khattab narrated, “We were sitting with the Holy Prophet (sa) one day, when an unknown man appeared to us. His clothes were brilliantly white, his hair jet black but there was no sign of traveling upon him.
1. SUBMISSION TO ALLAH (ISLAM)
He sat down in front of the Prophet (sa) and their knees touched. Placing his hands on his thighs he said, ‘Prophet Muhammad (sa) tell me about Islam.’ The Prophet (sa) replied, ‘Islam is that you bear witness that there is no god except Allah, and that Muhammad is His Messenger, and that you establish the prayer, pay the obligatory charity, fast the month of Ramadan, and make the Pilgrimage to the House (Ka’ba) if you can afford it.’ Then to our surprise the man confirmed the correctness of the answer saying, ‘That is right.’
2. FAITH AND BELIEF (IMAN)
Then the man said, ‘Tell me about faith.’ To this the Prophet (sa) replied, ‘ It is that you believe in Allah, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, the Last Day and that you believe in predestination.’
3. SPIRITUAL PERFECTION (IHSAN, ISLAMIC SUFISM)
Again the man said, ‘That is right, now tell me about perfection.’ The Prophet (sa) replied, ‘It is that you worship Allah as if you are seeing Him, and if you do not see Him, know that He is watching you.’ The man asked again, ‘Tell me about the Hour of Judgement.’ The Prophet (sa) replied, ‘He who is being asked knows no more about it than the one who asks.’ So the man asked, ‘Tell me about some of the signs of its approach.’ To this the Prophet (sa) replied, ‘The female slave will give birth to her master, and the bare-footed, naked, penniless goat-herders will live arrogantly in high mansions.’ The man departed, and I remained for a while. The Prophet (sa) asked me, ‘Omar, do you know who the inquirer was?’ I replied, ‘Allah and His Messenger know best.’ So he told me, ‘It was Gabriel who came to teach you your Religion.’

[IslamCity] A Muslim's Nationality and His Belief By Syed Qutb

2005-02-26 Thread FAITH

A Muslim's Nationality and His BeliefBy Syed QutbThe day Islam gave a new concept of values and standards to mankind and showed the way to learn these values and standards, it also provided it with a new concept of human relationships. Islam came to return man to his Sustainer and to make His guidance the only source from which values and standards are to be obtained, as He is the Provider and Originator. All relationships ought to be based through Him, as we came into being through His will and shall return to Him.Islam came to establish only one relationship which binds men together in the sight of God, and if this relationship is firmly established, then all other relationships based on blood or other considerations become eliminated. "You will not find the people who believe in God and the Hereafter taking as allies the enemies of God and His Prophet,
whether they be their fathers or sons or brothers or fellow tribesmen." (Al-Qur'an 58:22)In the world there is only one party of God; all others are parties of Satan and rebellion. "Those who believe fight in the cause of God, and those who disbelieve fight in the cause of rebellion. Then fight the allies of Satan; indeed, Satan's strategy is weak." (Al-Qur'an 3:78)There is only one way to reach God; all other ways do not lead to Him. "This is My straight path. Then follow it, and do not follow other ways which will scatter you from His path." (Al-Qur'an 6:153)For human life, there is only one true system, and that is Islam; all other systems are Jahiliyyah. "Do they want a judgment of the Days of Ignorance? Yet who is better in judgment than God, for a people having sure faith?" (Al-Qur'an 5:50)There is only one law which ought to be followed, and that is the Shari'ah from God; what is other than this is mere caprice. "We have set thee on a way
ordained (by God); then follow it, and do not follow the desires of those who have no knowledge." (Al-Qur'an 45:18)The truth is one and indivisible; anything different from it is error. "Is anything left besides error, beyond the truth? Then whither do you go?" (Al-Qur'an 10:32)There is only one place on earth which can be called the home of Islam (Dar-ul-Islam), and it is that place where the Islamic state is established and the Shari¹ah is the authority and God's limits are observed, and where all the Muslims administer the affairs of the state with mutual consultation. The rest of the world is the home of hostility (Dar-ul-Harb). A Muslim can have only two possible relations with Dar-ul-Harb: peace with a contractual agreement, or war. A country with which there is a treaty will not be considered the home of Islam. "Those who believed, and migrated, and strove with their wealth and their persons in the cause of God, and those who gave them refuge and
helped them, are the protectors of each other. As to those who believed but did not emigrate, you have no responsibility for their protection until they emigrate; but if they ask your help in religion, it is your duty to help them, except against a people between whom and you there is a treaty; and God sees whatever you do. Those who disbelieve are the allies of each other. If you do not do this, there will be oppression in the earth and a great disturbance. Those who believe, and migrate, and fight in the cause of God, and those who give them refuge and help them, are in truth Believers. For them is forgiveness and generous provision. And those who accept Faith afterwards and migrate and strive along with you, they are of you." (8:72-75)Islam came with this total guidance and decisive teaching. It came to elevate man above, and release him from, the bonds of the earth and soil. A Muslim has no country except that part of the earth where the Shari'ah of God is established
and human relationships are based on the foundation of relationship with God; a Muslim has no nationality except his belief, which makes him a member of the Muslim community in Dar-ul-Islam; a Muslim has no relatives except those who share the belief in God, and thus a bond is established between him and other Believers through their relationship with God.A Muslim has no relationship with his mother, father, brother, wife and other family members except through their relationship with the Creator, and then they are also joined through blood. "O mankind, remain conscious of your Sustainer, Who created you from one soul and created from it its mate, and from the two of them scattered a great many men and women. Remain conscious of God, from Whose authority you make demands, and reverence the wombs which bore." (4:1)However, Divine relationship does not prohibit a Muslim from treating his parents with kindness and consideration, inspite of differences of belief, as long
as they do not join the front lines of the enemies of Islam. However, if they openly declare their alliance with the enemies of Islam, then all the filial relationships of a Muslim are cut off and he is not bound to be kind

[IslamCity] The Clear Evidence that Music is Haram

2005-02-26 Thread Love Sahabah

Aslamu Alikum Wa Rahmatullah Wa barakthuhu

The Religion of Islaam has made clear the prohibition of Music, as is clear from the Qur'aan, ahaadeeth of the Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) and the understanding of the Companions (radi Allaahu anhum), when all three are taken together.
From the Qur'aan:Allaah subhaanahu wa ta'aalaa says, what means:

"Do you marvel at this statement, and laugh and do not weep, while you amuse yourselves [proudly] in vanities ? Rather, prostrate before Allaah and worship Him [alone]." Soorah an-Najm, aayaat 59-62

According to Ibn Abbaas (ra), the word 'saamidoon' in this verse refers to the mushrikeen's habit of singing and playing music noisily whenever they heard the Qur'aan being recited, in order to drown out the reciters voice so that others wouldn't hear it.
Also, Allaah says (regarding Satan) what means :

" 'And excite any of them whom you can with your voice. Assault them with your cavalry and infantry, be a partner with them in their wealth and children, and make them promises.' But Satan promises them nothing except deceit." Soorah al-Israa, aayah 64

Some of the taabi'een such as ad-Dahhaak and Mujaahid interpreted Satan's exciting mankind with his voice to mean through the use of music, song and amusement. Ad-Dahhaak said it was the sound of wind instruments. However according to Ibn Abbaas (ra), the voice mentioned in the verse refers to every form of invitation which calls to the disobedience of Allaah the Exalted, which seems to be the most correct interpretation.
Finally, Allaah says what means:

"And there are among men those who purchase idle talk in order to mislead others from Allaah's Path without knowledge, and who throw ridicule upon it. For such there will be a humiliating punishment." Soorah Luqmaan, aayah 6

Ibn Masood (ra) said about this verse "I swear by the One other than Whom there is no God that it refers to singing [ghinaa].", and he repeated this three times. Ibn Abbaas (ra) said it refered to 'singing and the like' while Jaabir (ra) is reported to view its meaning to signify singing and listening to songs. Many taabi'oon such as Mujaahid, Ikrimah, Mak-hool and Umar ibn Shu'ayb viewed it as a censure of music and song.

From the ahaadeeth of the Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wa salaam) :Contrary to the commonly held belief, there are a number of authentic narrations from the Prophetic Sunnah which clearly point to the indisputable fact that music, instruments, singing to accompaniment, etc. are objects prohibited by the Islamic Sharia. The exceptions to this general rule are specific , limited types of innocent singing or chanting without any instrumental accompaniment or to the accompaniment of a simple hand drum (daff) on certain occasions designated by the sunnah.
Unfortunately, many Muslims entertain the misconception that all the ahaadeeth relating to music, singing and musical instruments are either weak (da'eef) or forged (mawdoo') - a position that is untenable.

The Narration of al-Bukhaaree: The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said :

"There will be [at some future time] people from my Ummah who will seek to make lawful fornication, the wearing of silk, wine drinking and the use of musical instruments [ma'aazif]. Some people will stay at the side of the mountain and when their shepherd comes in the evening to ask them for his needs, they will say : 'Return to us tomorrow'. Then Allaah will destroy them during the night by causing the mountain to fall upon them, while He changes others into apes and swine. They will remain in such a state unitl the Day of Resurrection."
al-Jowhari, the author of the ancient dictionary 'as-Sihaah', asserts that ma'aazif signifies musical instruments, al-'aazif indicates one who sings, and the 'azf of the wind is its voice.. Az-Zabeedi also says that ma'aazif are instruments of leisure which are drummed upon or played, like the loot ('ood) , the drum (tanboor), the small hand drum (daff) or other such musical objects. Ibn Hajar in Fathul-Baaree relates that 'azf is also used to describe singing (ghinaa).
This authentic hadeeth clearly establishes the prohibition of music and singing and this in itself is sufficient for the one who really wishes to see the Truth of the affair. However theer are other authentic narrations on the subject that we quote below.

The Narration of Ibn Maajah : The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said :

"A people of my Ummah will drink wine, calling it by other than its real name. Merriment will be made for them through the playing of musical instruments and the singing of female singers. Allaah will cleave the earth under them and turn others into apes and swine."
This hadeeth has also been narrated by al-Bayhaaqi and ibn Asaakir, and has been authenticated by the renowned scholar of hadeeth Ibn al-Qayyim.

[IslamCity] Rulings of Making Cleanliness (Istinja)

2005-02-26 Thread Syeda Muneeba Masood

RULINGS OF MAKING CLEANLINESS (ISTINJA)By: Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi

On awakening from sleep, a person should not put his hands in the water (container) until and unless he washes his hands upto his wrists irrespective of whether the hands are pure or impure. If water has been kept in a small container, such as a pitcher or jug, then it should be carried with the left hand and poured onto the right hand and washed three times. Thereafter, the utensil should be taken into the right hand and the left hand should be washed three times. If the water is not kept in a small container, but in a big drum, etc., then it should be taken out with a small utensil, such as a jug. Care should be taken that the fingers do not touch the water. If there is no small utensil, then water should be taken out with the palm of the left hand. As far as possible, very little of the fingers should be put in the water. On taking out the water, first the right hand should be washed, and thereafter, as much
of the right hand can be put in the water. On taking out water, the left hand should be washed. This method of washing the hands is only permissible if the hands are not impure. If they are impure, then under no condition should the hands be put in the drum. Water should be taken out in such a way that it does not become impure. For example, a clean handkerchief could be dipped in the water and whatever comes onto the handkie could be used to purify the hands. Alternatively, any other possible method could be used to purify them.
It is sunnah to make istinja of those impurities emitted from the anterior or posterior private parts.
If the impurity does not stick to the sides (or anywhere else), and a person does not use water for istinja, but instead uses pure stones or lumps of clay, and wipes in such a way that the impurity goes away and the body gets clean; then this will also be permissible. But this method is contrary to purity consciousness. If there is no water or a shortage of it, then there is no alternative but to cleanse oneself in this way.
There is no special method for using stones. But care should be taken that the impurity does not spread and the body gets thoroughly cleaned.
After having made istinja with stones, it is sunnat to make istinja with water. But if the impurity spreads more than the size of a fifty cents coin, it will be wajib to wash with water. Without washing, salaat will not be valid. If the impurity has not spread, then even after purifying with stones alone, salaat will be valid, but this is contrary to the sunnat.
When making istinja with water, first the hands upto the wrists should be washed. Thereafter go to a secluded spot, and after loosening the clothes, sit down. Wash until you are thoroughly satisfied that the body is clean. But if a person is always in doubt and he uses a lot of water, and still he is not fully satisfied, then he should wash three or seven times and not more than this.
If a secluded place cannot be found, then for the sake of making istinja with water, one should not expose one's private parts, neither to women nor men. In such a case, istinja should not be made with water (but stones). Salaat should be offered without having made istinja (with water). This is because the exposing of one's body is a major sin.
Making istinja with the following objects is a sin and prohibited, and should be abstained from: bones, impurities such as cow-dung and droppings of goats, coal, coarse limestone, glass, baked bricks, edibles, paper, etc. It is also sinful to make istinja with the right hand. But if someone does this, the body will be cleaned.

[IslamCity] Maryam: a much mistaken woman

 Maryam: a much mistaken woman
 By Lobna Elhaw
This is the story of Maryam (Mary) daughter of Imran and mother of Isa (Jesus) [Alaihis salaam]. She was respected by both Muslims and Christians, but there are some aspects on which the two religionists differ. Let us see the facts that the learned writer has compiled about her.

Allah declares He has no son:
In many verses of the Glorious Qur'aan, Allah the Exalted denied the claim of the Christians that He has a son. A delegation from Najran came to Prophet Muhammad (Sall Allaho alaihe wasallam). They began to talk about their claim about the Trinity, which is that Allah is three in one, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, with some disagreement among their sects. That is why Allah affirmed in many verses of the Holy Qur'aan that Jesus is a slave of Allah, whom He moulded in the womb of his mother like any other of His creatures, and that He created him without a father, as He created Adam without a father or mother. It means Maryam is not the wife of God.
Maryam-member of the chosen family:
Allah the Almighty said, "Allah chose Adam, Noah, the family of Abraham and the family of Imran above the Alamin (mankind and jinns) (of their times). Offspring, one of the other, and Allah is the All-Hearer, All-Knower.
Maryam's birth:
"(Remember) when the wife of Imran said: "0 my Lord! I have vowed to You what (the child that) is in my womb to be dedicated for Your services (free from all worldly work; to serve Your Place of worship), so accept this, from me. Verily, You are the All-Hearer, the All-Knowing.
"Then when she delivered her (child Mary), she said: "0 my Lord! I have delivered a female child," - and Allah knew better what she delivered, - "and the male is not like the female, and I have named her Maryam, and I seek refuge with You (Allah) for her and for her offspring from Satan, the outcast." (3:33-36)
Maryam's sustenance:
"So her Lord (Allah) accepted her with goodly acceptance. He made her grow in a good manner and put her under the care of Zakaria. Every time he entered the Mihrab (a praying place or a private room), he found her supplied with sustenance.
"He said, '0 Maryam! From where have you got this?' She said, 'From Allah. Verily, Allah provides sustenance to whom He wills, without limit." (3:37)
Maryam's family history:
Allah declared that He had elected Adam and the elite of his offspring who obey Allah. Then He specified the family of Ibrahim, which includes the sons of Ismail, and the family of Imran, the father of Maryam. Muhammad Ibn Ishaaq stated that he was Imran Ibn Bashim, Ibn Amun, Ibn Misha, Thn Hosqia, Ibn Ahriq, Ibn Mutham, Ibn Azazia, Ibn Amisa, Thn Yamish, Ibn Ahrihu, Ibn Yazem, Thn Yahfashat, Thn Eisha, Thn Iyam, Thn Rahbaam, Ibn David (Dawood).
A mother's longing:
Prophet Zakaria's sister-in-law had a daughter named Hannah. She was married to Imran, a leader of the Israelites. For many years the couple remained childless. Whenever Hannah saw another woman with a child, her longing for a baby increased. Although years had passed, she never lost hope. She believed that one day Allah would bless her with a child, on whom she would shower all her motherly love.
She turned to the Lord of the heavens and the earth and pleaded with Him for a child. She would offer the child in the service of Allah's house, in the temple of Jerusalem. Allah granted her request. When she learned she was pregnant, she was the happiest woman alive, and thanked Allah for His gift. Her overjoyed husband Imran also thanked Allah for His mercy.
However, while she was pregnant, her husband passed away. Hannah wept bitterly. Alas, Imran did not live to see their child for whom they had so longed. She gave birth to a girl, and again turned to Allah in prayer: "0 my Lord, I have delivered a female child, ... and the male is not like the female, and I have named her Maryam, and I seek refuge with You (Allah) for her and her offspring from Satan, the outcast. (3:36)
Zakaria as Maryam's guardian:
Hannah had a big problem in reference to her promise to Allah, for females were not accepted into the temple, and she was very worried. Her brother-in-law, Zakaria, comforted her, saying that Allah knew best what she had delivered and appreciated fully what she had offered in His service. She wrapped the baby in a shawl and handed it over to the temple elders. As the baby was a girl, the question of her guardianship posed a problem for the elders. This was a child of their late and beloved leader, and everyone was eager to take care of her. Zakaria said to the elders: "I am the husband of her maternal aunt and her nearest relation in the temple, therefore, I will be more mindful of her than all of you."
As it was their custom to draw lots to solve disagreements, they followed this course. Each one was given a reed to throw into the river. They agreed that whoever's reed remained afloat would be granted guardianship of the girl. All the reeds sank to the bottom except

[IslamCity] When i covered my head i opened my mind

2005-02-26 Thread soft wind

When I Covered My Head I Opened My Mind

Shariffa Carlo

As a non-Muslim living in Western society, the idea of modesty was not exactly foremost in my mind. Like all other women of my generation and mind-set, I thought such ideas were antiquated and excessive. I felt pity for the poor Muslim woman who had to "wear all that junk," or "walk around in bed - sheets" as I used to call it
I was a modern woman, educated and liberated. Little did I know the awful truth. I was more oppressed than any Muslim woman in the most culturally oppressive village in the Muslim world. I was oppressed not by an inability to choose my clothing or to choose my life-style, I was oppressed by an inability to see my society for what it really was. I was oppressed by the idea that a woman's beauty was public, and that lustful admiration was equal to respect.
It was when Allah guided me to Islam, and I put on the hijab, that I was finally able to step out of the society in which I lived and see it for what it really is. I could see how the highest paid women were those who exposed themselves to public display, like actresses, models and even strip-tease dancers. I was able to see that the relationship between men and women was unfairly stacked in the man's direction. I knew I used o dress to attract men. I tried to fool myself by saying I did it to please myself, but the painful reality was that what pleased me was when I was admired by a man I considered attractive.
I now know that there is no way for a person to know that he is dirty if he has never been clean. Similarly, I was not able to see that I was oppressed until I stepped out of the darkness of this oppressive society into the light of Islam. With that light shined on the truth, I was finally able to see the shadows that had been so obscured by my Western philosophies. It is not oppression to protect yourself and society; it is oppression to voluntarily throw yourself into the quagmire while denying it is dirty.
I am grateful to Allah that He allowed me to recognize that when I covered my head, I was taking away from people any means for judging me other than my mind, my soul and my heart. When I covered my head, I took away the incentive for exploitation based on beauty. When I covered my head, I made people respect me because they saw that I respected myself, and when I covered my head, I finally opened my mind to the truth.
Teach, Don't PreachOne of the factors which attracted me to this great deen of ours was the fact that so much of it can be understood based on logic and reason. that is why I feel that many Muslims parents do themselves a great disservice by not explaining more to their children. The old, "Because I say so...", or because you are an Arab, Pakistani, Somali, (fill in your cultural preference)..." never has worked and never will work. Human beings have a natural desire to understand what they do and why they do it, that is why Islam is such a great religion, because it satisfies all of our basic intellectual and emotional needs; it does this simply because it is the truth, and the truth is always easy to understand and defend.
When we teach our children, we should use the same sound reasoning and logic that we use to convince ourselves that a particular deed is beneficial. Thus, as we accept it, so, inshallah, will they because it will be understandable. Of course we preface every instruction with the understanding that we do what we do to please Allah and Allah only, even if we can not understand it, but alhamdulillah we have a means to understand the majority of what we do and avoid as Muslims.
For instance, we know that we don't eat pork because Allah commands us in the Glorious Quraan to avoid it. Then, we know that our beloved Prophet (Sal Allahu alayhi wa salam) commanded us to avoid it. We need to tell this to our kids, and as they grow and increase in their understanding we need to show it to them. This teaches them some important lessons. It shows them Allah's commands; it shows them the importance of the Prophet's (Sal Allahu alayhi wa salam) commands, and it shows them the basics of researching into the deen. Then, once we set this as our base, we need to explain to them the wisdom of this command. Talk about the diseases associated with eating pork. Discuss the unsanitary living/eating habits of this animal. Essentially, teach them those things which help you to avoid this sin. Teach them to use their faith and their mind in unison as tools towards achieving the ultimate goal of reaching Jannah.

Buying bread reveals Iraq's multiple
dangers

24 Feb 2005 14:38:27 GMT

Source: Reuters

By Luke Baker

BAGHDAD, Feb 24 (Reuters) - Sometimes just buying bread in Baghdad can be deadly.

Two weeks ago, masked gunmen stormed into the Saada (Happiness)
bakery in the east of the city and unleashed a hail of gunfire, killing nine
people and wounding a dozen.

On Thursday they struck Happiness again.

Two armed men jumped out of a passing car and showered the bakery
with bullets, killing one person and wounding two others.

Pools of blood formed on the pavement outside.

We tried to run but they chased after us and opened fire. We
were working. We did nothing, said one of the bakery's employees, his
hands still white with flour.

Saada is a Shi'ite-owned bakery and the two hits appear to be a
result of deepening tensions between Iraq's Muslim communities, the
majority Shi'ites and minority Sunnis, who form the backbone of the insurgency.

The bakery is plastered with posters of Iraq's foremost Shi'ite scholar,
the grey-bearded Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, and of Moqtada al-Sadr, a young,
rebellious Shi'ite preacher.

Since the first attack occurred during the build-up to Ashura, a
major Shi'ite ritual, it seemed to fit the sectarian pattern.

The ceremony has been targeted by Sunni militants in the past --
50 Shi'ites were killed in suicide bombings in Baghdad this Ashura, and the year before more
than 170 died.

And there have been attacks similar to the one on Saada at other
Shi'ite bakeries elsewhere in the capital during Ashura.

CRIME OR POLITICS?

But it appears Saada may also have been targeted for political as
well as sectarian reasons, highlighting another facet of Iraq's multiple
dangers.

Residents said the bakery had sold bread to the Iraqi army.

Militants regard any form of cooperation with U.S.-backed
authorities as siding with the enemy. Iraqis working as translators for U.S. forces are
frequently killed and U.S.-trained Iraqi police are a constant target.

Workers at Saada denied they had sold bread to the Iraqi security
forces, even though locals said policemen, like many other nearby residents,
regularly dropped by the bakery.

But the shop may have been targeted for a third reason, as part of
a business feud, underlining another element of Iraq's fraught security situation
-- rampant crime.

In the lawlessness that has infected the country, gangs have often
carried out criminal acts under the guise of politics or religion.

Police do not know what the motive for the
Saada attacks was. But whatever the cause, Baghdad residents now know that another
seemingly innocent act -- buying bread -- can be lethal.

[IslamCity] Austrian Muslim Women at Heart of Defending Islam

2005-02-26 Thread Islahonline

Austrian Muslim Women at Heart of Defending
  Islam

“Austrian Muslim women have indeed
made impressive political and social strides,” said
Baghajati.
  By Ahmed Al-Matboli, IOL
  Correspondent
  VIENNA, February 14 (IslamOnline.net) – Austrian
Muslim women stood up to be counted, feeling, like men, duty bound to
defend their religion and clear misconceptions about Islam in the western
  media.
Reinforcing the eminent status they enjoy under Islam,
they established last month the Muslim Women Forum in Austria (FMFO) as an
affiliate to the Islamic Religious Authority (IGG) to get the message
  across.
“Austrian Muslim women have indeed made impressive
political and social strides whether individually or through the IGG,”
Amina Baghajati, the media spokeswoman for the nascent forum and one of
  its founding members, told IslamOnline.net.
“We are trying our best to defend the image of Islam
throughout Europe, asserting that freedom and equality are inalienable
rights enshrined in Islam for women.”
She added that the IGG’s media department monitors
media and newspaper reports about Muslim women in Austria and frequently
  responds to clear misconceptions.
Of the nearly 400,000 Muslims in Austria, 15,000 are
  women, according to Baghajati.
Muslims make up some 8 per cent of the country’s eight
  million population.
Credit for a successful and a fruitful 2004 does not
only go to Muslim men in Austria; Muslim women have, in effect, weighed
  heavily in that regard.
  Daunting Challenges
FMFO president Andrea Saleh said that the fledging
group is aimed at living up to the daunting challenges facing Islam in
Europe and in the West alike.
“Clearing stereotypes about Muslim women, that they
are downtrodden under Islam, necessitates engaging in a constructive
dialogue with the other,” she said.
Launched on January 29, the forum is based on the Graz
Declaration, which was issued by a conference of imams and Muslim
  preachers in June 2003.
The declaration basically underlined the fact that
Islam rejects all forms of bigotry and extremism while defending democracy
  and human rights.
The forum is scheduled to start its activities on
February 19 with a ceremony marking the New Hijri Year.
Chief among its goals are cementing Muslim women’s
integration into society, helping women activists work in concert,
clearing stereotypes about Islam and providing advice on domestic violence
  and western traditions.
  Matrimonial service, spare-time programs and
interfaith dialogue are also high on the agenda.
Islam, which was officially acknowledged in Austria in
1908, is considered the second religion in the country after Catholic
  Christianity.
A law issued in 1867, which guaranteed respect for all
religions, gave Muslims the right to establish mosques and practice their
  religion in Austria.
There are 76 mosques and prayer rooms across the
country, including 53 in Vienna alone, according to recent
  estimates.

  Austrian Muslims Score Big in

Fischer joined Muslims in
celebrating the silver Jubilee of the Islamic Religious Authority in
Austria.
By Tamer Abul Einein Ahmed Al-Matboli, IOL
  Correspondents
  VIENNA, January 4 (IslamOnline.net) – The Muslim
community in Austria shined in 2004, showing great ability to integrate
smoothly into the Austrian society, making use of the official recognition
of Islam as a the second state religion, allowing Muslims to defend their
rights, in addition to being staunch supporters of Arab and Islamic
  causes.
The year 2004 started on a promising note for Austrian
Muslims, with official estimates showing their number had doubled to hit
300,000, making up 4% of the 8 million population.
In 1991, the Austrian Muslim community made only 2% of
  the total population.
The 2004 statistics showed Muslims highly concentrated
in the western Austrian city of Freiburg, making up 8.4% of the total
population in the area. The capital Vienna came second, with Muslims
making up to 7.8% of its population.

“Do they not Travel through the Earth, and see what the End of those before
them was? But the Home of the Hereafter is best, Will Ye not then Understand?”

ISLAM’s HISTORIC DIARY
*Subject: Malcolm X’s Martyrdom
*Date: 21st of February 1965
*Place: Audubon Ballroom, New-York, USA
*Elapsed Time: Day for Day: 40 Years
*Main Historic Figure: Malcolm X or Hadj Malik El Shabazz
The Late Malcolm X was born Malcolm Little on May 19,1925 in Omaha , Nebraska
, his father , a Baptist Minister was an outspoken follower of Marcus Garvey ,
the Black Nationalist Leader in the 1920s who advocated a “ Back to Africa”
movement for African Americans, and during Malcolm ‘s early years his family had
to move several times because of the Ku Klux Klansmen ‘s continuing threats as a
result of these threats , his home was burned in Michigan and when Malcolm was
six years old , his father was murdered.
In the aftermath of this tragedy that occurred to her husband, his mother
became mentally ill and remained in a mental institution for about 26 years,
Malcolm was sent to a foster home and his sisters and brothers were divided
among several families and Malcolm lived in various state institutions and
boarding – houses, he dropped out of school at the age of 15.
Malcolm went on to live with his sister in Boston , while working as a
shoeshine boy , soda jerk , busboy , waiter and railroad dining car waiter , at
this very crucial point he began a sort of a criminal life that included
gambling , selling drugs , burglary and hustling , in 1946 Malcolm was sentenced
to ten years for burglary , and in prison he began to shape us his life, and
though his family’s visits he came to know about the Black Muslim Religious
Movement in fact the Black Muslims ‘official name was the lost –found nation of
Islam , and the spiritual leader was Elijah Mohammed , with national
headquarters in Chicago.
In prison Malcolm began to study Elijah’s teachings and to practice Islam
faithfully on top of that he widely enlarged his vocabulary by copying words
from the dictionary beginning with A and going through to Z , also he began to
assimilate the racial teachings of his “new religion” that the white Man is evil
doomed by Allah to destruction and that the best course for Black People is to
separate themselves from Western white civilization in the cultural , political
,physical and psychological fields.
In 1952 Malcolm was released from prison and went to Chicago to meet Elijah
Mohammed , once accepted in the movement and given the name of Malcolm X , he
became assistant Minister of the Detroit Mosque , the following year he returned
to Chicago to study personally under Elijah and shortly thereafter was sent to
organize a Mosque in Philadelphia.
In 1954 Malcolm went to lead the Mosque in Harlem and quickly became the most
prominent national Spokesman for the Black Muslims, he was widely sought as a
Speaker, and his debating skills and talents against white and black opponents
helped spread the movement’s message, during this time in the United States
there was a major thrust for racial integration , however Malcolm and the Black
Muslims were calling for racial separation , he urged Black people to give up
the Christian Religion , reject integration and to clearly understand that the
high crime rate in Black communities was essentially due to the result of
African Americans following the decadent life style of western white
society.
On the 1st of December 1963, Malcolm stated that he saw President
John F. Kennedy’s assassination as a case of “the chickens coming home to
roost”, soon afterwards Elijah suspended Malcolm and ordered him not to speak
for the movement for 90 days as a result of this row, Malcolm publicly announced
on the 8th of March 1964 that he was leaving the Nation of Islam and
starting two new organisations: the Muslim Mosque and the Organisation of
Afro-American Unity.
Malcolm made several trips to Africa and Europe and mostly important was his
trip to Makkah for Hajj in April 1964, it was the culminating point and the
great Change that enormously affected him in a letter sent to his Assistants and
his wife during the conclusion of his Pilgrimage to Makkah as reported by Alex
Haley in the Autobiography of Malcolm X:
“Never have I witnessed such sincere Hospitality and the overwhelming spirit
of true Brotherhood as practiced by the People of all colours and races here in
the Ancient Holy land, the Home of Abraham, Mohammed and all other Prophets of
the Holy Scriptures, for the past week, I have been utterly speechless and
spellbound by the graciousness I see displayed all around me by People of all
colours”.
In the same letter he added: “There were tens of thousands of Pilgrims, from
all over the world, there were of all colours, from blue eyed blonds to black
skin Africans, but

[IslamCity] US - Israeli National to Head Secret

Axis Power, the
United
States,
Chooses Israeli National to Head Secret Police, Forces Prepare For Further
Global Conquest
By: Sorcha Faal, and as reported to her Russian
Subscribers From: Patty Blackwell
In the latest frightening internal move
by the United States against the world, we have come to learn that President Bush has appointed
the Jewish Israeli national John
Negroponte to be the head of all 15 of the their intelligence organizations, and
which includes the CIA.
Not known to many Americans is the fact
that all Jewish citizens in the United
States are
also citizens of Israel. To such a
strange circumstance this has brought to America we can even read in this
newspaper article from the Los Angeles Times about how this effects even the
United States, “Galvis was attempting a feat perhaps unprecedented in
American politics: holding two elected offices simultaneously in two countries.
He is, after all, a citizen of both places, with a pair of passports to prove
it. "I was going to travel back and forth," said Galvis, who runs a travel agency in Hackensack. "I saw this
as a good opportunity to keep some ties to the homeland
there."
Equally not known to the American people is that
John Negroponte is known throughout the Central American countries as the
“Ambassador to Death Squads”,
and as we can read, "During his years in Honduras,
Negroponte acquired a reputation, justified, as an old-fashioned imperialist,
and devoted to Realpolitik. At the time Mr. Negroponte was in
Honduras, Honduras was a military dictatorship. Kidnapping, rape, torture and
executions of dissidents was rampant. The military top and middle ranks were
U.S-trained at the School of the Americas (SOA), the Harvard version of the CIA,
based in Fort Benning, Georgia. According to Human
Rights Watch, graduates of the SOA are responsible for the worst human rights
abuses and torture of dissidents in Latin
America."
Of these Jewish secret police masters
we are well familiar with here in our country. No family in Russia was left untouched
during the sadistic Jewish Communist reign of the
People's
Commissariat Internal Affairs, NKVD, under the
brutal direction of the Jewish head of the organization Lavrenti Beria, and of
which has been truly reported;
"Beria
was Stalin's party associate and confidante from their native Georgia. In 1938
he was put in charge of the dreaded NKVD. Beria was responsible for the infamous
Katyn massacre of captive Polish soldiers and
intellectuals. Beria was also in charge of the Gulag prison system that sent
millions to oblivion. Beria was noted for having his bodyguards kidnap young
schoolgirls so that he could rape them in his Lubyanka
office, which doubled as a torture
chamber."
Once again the
world is facing a terrifying American militaristic regime headed by cruel Jewish
masters who will now control the secret polices forces for the whole country and
to the citizens of this insane country there is no protest. It is too easy to say, and even still
easier to believe, that the entire citizenship of this once great Nation has
gone completely insane.
These are not idle or speculative words
either, and as their own government reports about them, “Is America the most medicated nation
on Earth? Could be, according data just released by the Department of Health and
Human Services (HHS) showing that at least half of all Americans takes at least
one prescription drug, with one in six taking three or more
medications."
And if it is possible to have ‘insanity
within insanity’ we are shown such a case today with these Americans in that the
very drugs they use to dull their senses are in fact killing them, and as we can
read as reported by their MSNBC News Service, "Adults taking popular antidepressants such as Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft are more than twice as likely to attempt
suicide as patients given sugar pills, according to an analysis released
yesterday of hundreds of clinical trials involving tens of thousands of
patients."
The
most medicated people on earth, medicated with drugs that kill them, in control
of the worlds most powerful militaristic regime, who can not give up their
rights as free citizens fast enough, who believe every lie their propagandists
tell them, watch silently as their neighbors disappear into their gulag, give no
protests to their military’s invasions of other countries, preach ‘democracy’ to
the world, while at the same time their own allies are some of the most brutal
dictatorial regimes on earth, and they wonder why they are feared and despised
in the world? Is this not
madness?
To their great Middle East ally Egypt
this week the American Secretary of State, Rice, has ‘criticized’ the Egyptians
for imprisoning an opposition party member prior to the presidential elections
in that country, and to which Egypt has replied, and as we read in this Reuters
News Service report, "Egypt on Thursday

RE: [IslamCity] ISSUE OF SINGING AND MUSIC IN ISLAM

2005-02-26 Thread M. Malhar

Ruling on music, singing and dancing

Question:

I have always heard that music, singing and dancing are haram in Islam. I
went to this other site for the first time,XXX, and typed in music and all
of these articles appeared which said music, dancing, and singing in Islam is
halal??? They said as long as the 2 sexes are not close together and their
is no drinking going on etc. and they even have hadiths that try to prove
our Prophet Muhammed s.a.w was ok with this??? I am very confused now...
Could you PLEASE give a full, detailed explanation about the Islamic ruling
on music, singing and dancing and when it is allowed, if it is even allowed
at all.

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

Ma'aazif is the plural of mi'zafah, and refers to musical instruments (Fath
al-Baari, 10/55), instruments which are played (al-Majmoo', 11/577).
Al-Qurtubi (may Allaah have mercy on him) narrated from al-Jawhari (may
Allaah have mercy on him) that ma'aazif means singing. In his Sihaah it
says that it means musical instruments. It was also said that it refers to
the sound of the instruments. In al-Hawaashi by al-Dimyaati (may Allaah have
mercy on him) it says: ma'aazif means drums (dufoof, sing. daff) and other
instruments which are struck or beaten (Fath al-Baari, 10/55).

Evidence of prohibition in the Qur'aan and Sunnah:

Allaah says in Soorat Luqmaan (interpretation of the meaning):

And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing) to
mislead (men) from the path of Allaah... [Luqmaan 31:6]

The scholar of the ummah, Ibn 'Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him)
said: this means singing. Mujaahid (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: this
means playing the drum (tabl). (Tafseer al-Tabari, 21/40).

Al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: this aayah was
revealed concerning singing and musical instruments (lit. woodwind
instruments). (Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 3/451).

Al-Sa'di (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: this includes all manner of
haraam speech, all idle talk and falsehood, and all nonsense that encourages
kufr and disobedience; the words of those who say things to refute the truth
and argue in support of falsehood to defeat the truth; and backbiting,
slander, lies, insults and curses; the singing and musical instruments of
the Shaytaan; and musical instruments which are of no spiritual or worldly
benefit. (Tafseer al-Sa'di, 6/150)

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: The interpretation of
the Sahaabah and Taabi'in, that 'idle talk' refers to singing, is
sufficient. This was reported with saheeh isnaads from Ibn 'Abbaas and Ibn
Mas'ood. Abu'l-Sahbaa' said: I asked Ibn Mas'ood about the aayah
(interpretation of the meaning), 'And of mankind is he who purchases idle
talks' [Luqmaan 31:6]. He said: By Allaah, besides Whom there is no other
god, this means singing - and he repeated it three times. It was also
reported with a saheeh isnaad from Ibn 'Umar (may Allaah be pleased with
them both) that this means singing. There is no contradiction between the
interpretation of idle talk as meaning singing and the interpretation of
it as meaning stories of the Persians and their kings, and the kings of the
Romans, and so on, such as al-Nadr ibn al-Haarith used to tell to the people
of Makkah to distract them from the Qur'aan. Both of them are idle talk.
Hence Ibn 'Abbaas said: Idle talk is falsehood and singing. Some of the
Sahaabah said one and some said the other, and some said both. Singing is
worse and more harmful than stories of kings, because it leads to zinaa and
makes hypocrisy grow (in the heart); it is the trap of the Shaytaan, and it
clouds the mind. The way in which it blocks people from the Qur'aan is worse
than the way in which other kinds of false talk block them, because people
are naturally inclined towards it and tend to want to listen to it. The
aayaat condemn replacing the Qur'aan with idle talk in order to mislead
(men) from the path of Allaah without knowledge and taking it as a joke,
because when an aayah of the Qur'aan is recited to such a person, he turns
his back as if he heard them not, as if there were deafness in his ear. If
he hears anything of it, he makes fun of it. All of this happens only in the
case of the people who are most stubbornly kaafirs and if some of it happens
to singers and those who listen to them, they both have a share of this
blame. (Ighaathat al-Lahfaan, 1/258-259).

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

[Allaah said to Iblees:] And befool them gradually those whom you can
among them with your voice (i.e. songs, music, and any other call for
Allaah's disobedience)... [al-Israa' 17:64]

It was narrated that Mujaahid (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: And
befool them gradually those whom you can among them with your voice - his
voice [the voice of Iblees/Shaytaan] is singing and falsehood. Ibn al-Qayyim
(may Allaah have mercy on him) said: This idaafah [possessive or genitive
