Martin LingsJanuary 24, 1909 - May 12, 2005British scholar and convert to Islam who studied Sufi spirituality and wrote an acclaimed life of the Prophet Muhammad

MARTIN LINGS was the author of a number of definitive studies on Islamic philosophy, mysticism and art, as well as an indefatigable lecturer whose creative energies endured to the very last day of his life.
He was born in Lancashire in 1909 and studied English literature at Oxford, where he took his BA in 1932 and MA in 1937, before going on to become a lecturer in Anglo-Saxon and Middle English at the University of Kaunas in Lithuania, 1935-39.

In 1939, after a trip to Egypt to study Islam and Arabic, and an encounter with Sufis of the Shadhiliyya order, he converted to Islam. He remained in Egypt during the 1940s, sitting out the Second World War teaching Shakespeare to Egyptian students at the University of Cairo, where he was lecturer in English from 1940 to 1951. At the same time he devoted himself to the French mystical philosopher René Guénon, who had expatriated himself to Cairo from Paris. Guénon, an exponent of what subsequently became known as the “Traditionalist School”, had also converted to Islam, and Lings became his personal assistant and spiritual disciple during this Egyptian decade.
In Cairo he also composed his definitive account of Sufi doctrine in Arabic, which he later translated into English and published under the title of The Book of Certainty: The Sufi Doctrine of Faith, Wisdom and Gnosis (1952), taking his Muslim name (Abu Bakr Siraj ad-Din) as his nom de plume.
On his return to Britain in the early 1950s, Lings studied Arabic at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London, where he obtained his doctorate in 1959. He went on to become Keeper of Oriental Manuscripts in the British Museum and British Library, a position which he held for nearly two decades until 1973. In this capacity he published two catalogues, a Second Supplementary Catalogue of Arabic Printed Books in the British Museum (1959) and a Third Supplementary Catalogue of Arabic Printed Books in the British Library (1976).
Lings used the ready access to rare manuscripts which his position at the British Library afforded him to good purpose in other works, such as Islamic Calligraphy and Illumination (1971) and The Qur’anic Art of Calligraphy and Illumination (1976).
He consolidated his reputation as a leading historian of Islamic mysticism or Sufism with the publication of his PhD thesis: A Sufi Saint of the Twentieth Century: Shaikh Ahmad al-’Alawi (1961). This definitive and highly sympathetic account of an important modern Muslim mystic has appeared in numerous editions and translations (French, Spanish, Persian, Urdu and Arabic, among others). It was immediately reviewed by the great Cambridge professor of Islamic studies, A. J. Arberry, who highlighted the “important original contributions to knowledge” made by Lings, adding: “I know of no more lucid and convincing interpretation of Ibn Arabi’s much debated ‘pantheistic’ philosophy.”
Lings’s own world view reflected his combined interests in comparative religion and spiritual traditions worldwide as interpreted by Frithjof Schuon, the well-known exponent of the Traditionalist School and advocate of that universal wisdom known as the sophia perennis. In a number of his publications — such as Ancient Beliefs and Modern Superstitions (1964); The Eleventh Hour: The Spiritual Crisis of the Modern World in the Light of Tradition and Prophecy (1989); and Symbol and Archetype: A Study of the Meaning of Existence (1991) — Lings closely followed the thought of Schuon, whom he adopted as a Sufi master. Lings himself later assumed the position of sheikh or spiritual guide of one branch of the Shadhiliyya Sufi order.
That Lings’s breadth of learning in Islamic studies was indeed worthy of comparison with any of the other great scholars of his generation — figures such as Louis Massignon, R. A. Nicholson, Henry Corbin and Annemarie Schimmel — was confirmed beyond all doubt by the publication of his classic biography: Muhammad: His Life Based on the Earliest Sources (1983). Written from the perspective of a scholar-historian who was also a practising Muslim, this work is widely recognised as the most readable account of the life of the Prophet to date. It has been translated into more than ten languages and won a number of prizes in the Muslim world. (Lings received an award from President Mubarak of Egypt for the work in 1990.) One reviewer of the book, Professor Hamid Dabashi, of Columbia, University, referred to the “alchemy” of the text: “In reading Lings’s Muhammad, we detect an alchemical effect in his narration and composition which so evenly combines scholarly accuracy with
poetic passion. Lings is a scholar poet.”

Creation of Mankind
The Holy Quran says “O Mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male a female made you into nations tribes, that you may know each other (not that you may despise each other). Verily the most honoured of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge is well acquainted (with all things).”

Holy Quran
Chapter Al Hujurat 49:13

Commentary – Abdullah Yusuf Ali
This is addressed to all mankind not only to the Muslim brotherhood, though it is understood that in a perfected world the two would be synonymous. As it is, mankind is descended from one pair of parents. Their tribes, races nations are convenient labels by which we may know certain differing characteristics. Before Allah they are all one, gets most honour who is most righteous.

Comments – Mine
Like in all matters Allah Almighty does not stop at mentioning it in the Quran only. He has shown us practical steps to maintain this brotherhood of ours.

The Five Times Daily Prayer – We are asked to stand shoulder to shoulder irrespective of our colour, education, financial background etc. This also helps us meet the people in our locality interact with them on a daily basis.
The Annual Pilgrimage to Makkah (Hadj) – Where the Muslims by the thousands from different nationalities converge in one location purely for the sake of Allah Almighty.

Muslim Lives are Desecrated, Not Just Their Book

The reported desecration of the Quran by US guards at the infamous Guantanamo prison, as originally reported by Newsweek on May 9, 2005, was not - as it should've been - an opportunity for a thorough examination of US army practices, and thus human rights abuses, toward Muslim inmates in the numerous detention camps erected throughout the world.Considering that such practices are quite consistent with the overriding policy adopted by the Bush administration throughout the Middle East, one hardly crosses the border of reason when one expects key newspapers to contextualize the reported flushing of the Quran down the toilet episode with analogous practices in Iraq and Afghanistan. But as experience has shown, that's just too much to expect. Instead, the focus of the vast news coverage and commentary throughout the media was fixed on the less urgent matter of journalistic responsibility on behalf of Newsweek and the seemingly
inherent problem of Muslim backwardness and sadism. The Times of London made a clever choice when it selected a Muslim, Irshad Manji, to address the fierce response to the scandal. In an article entitled, "Why don't we Muslims grow up?" Manji, who seems demonstrably disengaged, found it most appropriate to prompt a discussion in semantics, questioning the wholesomeness and sanctity of the Quran itself. The Quran, according to the writer, "contains ambiguities, inconsistencies, outright contradictions and the possibility of human editing."What does this have to do with anything?

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatuallahi wa Barakatuhu.

I don't know if any of you know Sister Najla from the "Islam-Is-Peace" e-group...I have known her "virtually" for quite some time. It was just a few months back that we chatted on Yahoo messenger and she had her web-cam on and I got to see her bright, smiling, happy, beautiful, face.

Sister Najla was always someone I could refer to when I was unsure about something with regard to Islam...she was a virtual fountain of information, good cheer, and full of love and compassion for others...and her Creator.

She was always prompt about replying to me...and recently I wrote her again when an issue arose that I wanted her counsel on. A few days had passed and it had crossed my mind to write her again...but I just assumed that maybe, she, not unlike myself, might have just been a little busier than usual.

Sister Najla had shared with me the story of her migration from Morocco to Canada; and her goal to, insha'Allah, bring other members of her family to her newfound home. She seemed so happy and at peace the last time I saw her smiling through to me via the webcam...

And then, just the other day...I received a very brief, basically non descript message from her brother that to this very moment, the effects of reading its content continue to ripple through my heart...

Najla's brother's message was simply this:

Assalam alaikum

Brothers and sisters, Sister Najla is no more.

"Indeed we belong to Allah and to Him is our return."
(Surah Baqarah 2:156)

Idriss (sister Najla's brother)

(don't reply to this message please)

Wow...I couldn't believe my eyes...

I've pleaded with Br. Idriss for more of an explanation...to which I haven't received a reply...but, insha'Allah, he will write again.

I don't know what happened to bring about Sister Najela's passing...it strikes me as something that seems to have happened abtuptly and unexpectedly...(of course, none of us knows when our last moment will be)...because the last post she made was only April 24th, but I pray we will meet again, she and I, in Jannah, insha'Allah.

I looked up a little something on death that leaves me with a wonderful reassurance insofar as Sister Najela is concerned. I'll share it with you here:

While the life span of a Muslim is short, and deeds and actions stop after death, a Muslim may continue to earn rewards for certain things even after his death.

Good deeds, such as perpetual charity, are the ones that follow him a Muslim (Get the rewards), even while the person is in the grave, such deeds like: useful knowledge, a good child that prays for him, a Mosque that he built, teaching Quran to another person, a house he built for public use, a water fountain or a river that he rented and made it free for people, or a charity that he gave during his life while he was in good health; all are rewardable even after death.
In this respect the Prophet (P.B.U.H) said : "After the death of a person his actions stop, except three things that he leaves behind: First continuous charity, Second a knowledge from which some benefit may be obtained, Third a virtuous son who makes Dua’ (Pray, supplicate) on his behalf." (Muslim)
The itemsmade "bold"in color aremerely what I know of from personal experience with Sister Najela; and it is from this that I derive comfort from the heartfelt pain that struck my heart on hearing of her passing from this dunya.
My dear SisterNajela...'til we meet again...insha'Allah.
Love and hugs.
Ma'Salaama,
~Your Sister, Aishah.
There is no objection to quiet weeping as Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) did when his son died and said: "It is a mercy that Allah made in the hearts of his servants." (Bukhari)

was written, yet there were over 600 prophesy's in the Old Testimentabout Jesus that all came true, yet there are NO prophesy'sabout Muhammad in the entire Bible. How can Muhammadbe like Jesus if that is true?Answer:Praise be to Allaah. This is one of two cases: either this man is ignorant andwhat he says is of no significance, or what he says is afabrication and a lie. We Muslims know well the aayah(Qur'aanic verse) in which Allaah says (interpretationof the meaning):"Those who follow the Messenger, the Prophet who canneither read nor write (i.e. Muhammad) whom they findwritten with them in the Tawraat (Torah) (Deut, xviii 15)and the Injeel (Gospel) (John, xiv 16), - he commandsthem for Al-Ma`roof (i.e. Islâmic Monotheism and allthat Islam has ordained); and forbids them fromAl-Munkar (i.e. disbelief, polytheism of all kinds, andall that Islam has forbidden); he allows them as

So those who believein him (Muhammad), honour him, help him, and followthe light (the Qur'aan) which has been sent down withhim, it is they who will be successful[al-A'raaf 7:157]Ibn Katheer (may Allaah have mercy on him) saidin his commentary (tafseer) on this verse:" `Those who follow the Messenger, the Prophet whocan neither read nor write whom they find written withthem in the Tawraat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)'_ this is a description of Muhammad (peace andblessings of Allaah be upon him) in the books of theProphets who gave
their nations the glad tidings ofhis coming and commanded them to follow him. Thisdescription is still there in their books and theirscholars and rabbis know it. Imaam Ahmad narrated:Ismaa'eel told us from al-Jareeri from Abu Sakhral-`Aqeeli, a man from among the Bedouin told me,I brought a milch-camel to Madeenah during thelifetime of the Messenger of Allaah (peace andblessings of Allaah be upon him). When I had soldher, I said, "Let me meet this man [the Prophet(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)] andlisten to him." I met him walking between Abu Bakrand `Umar, and I followed them until they came toa Jewish man who was reading from a scroll of theTorah, consoling himself for the plight of his sonwho lay dying, a boy who was very handsome andgood looking. The Messenger of Allaah (peace andblessings of Allaah be upon him) said, `I ask youby the One Who revealed this Torah, do you findany mention in
this book of yours of my attributesand my coming?' The man gestured with his headto indicate `No'. But his son said, `Yes indeed,by the One who revealed the Torah, we do findmention of your attributes and your coming in ourbook, and I bear witness that there is no god exceptAllaah and that you are the Messenger of Allaah.'[The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah beupon him)] said, `Keep this Jew away from yourbrother.' Then he took care of shrouding himand praying [the funeral prayer] over him." Thisis a qawiy jayyid hadeeth. It was narrated that `Ataa' ibn Yassaar said: "Imet `Abd-Allaah ibn `Amr and said, `Tell meabout the attributes of the Messenger of Allaah(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)described in the Torah.' He said, `Yes, by Allaahhe is described in the Torah as he is describedin the Qur'aan (interpretation of the meaning):"Verily, We have sent you (O Muhammad)as a witness, as
a bearer of glad tidings, andas a warner" [al-Fath 48:8] _ and as a saviourto the unlettered; you are My slave and Mymessenger; your name is al-Mutawakkil; youare not harsh and aggressive; Allaah will nottake him (in death) until He has straighteneda crooked nation through him so that they willsay that there is no god except Allaah, andhas opened hard hearts, deaf ears and blindeyes.'" `Ataa' said: "Then I met Ka'b (whowas one of the People of the Book who hadbecome Muslim) and I asked him about that, and he told me exactly the same, not evenone

Tel Aviv entices Jews worldwide to leave their homelands and immigrate

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, May 29, 2005 (IslamOnline.net) – In what Israel
sees as the Palestinians' most potent weapon in the long run, a man of
the 1948 Palestinians has broken the record by fathering 60 children.

The man, who lives in the Negev region south of what is now Israel,
has married seven women, Al-Quds Press news agency reported quoting
the Israel Insurance Association.

He broke the previous record held by a Palestinian in Al-Jalil town,
inside the 1948 territories, who used to boast fathering 56 children,
the London-based news agency added.

Ten more Palestinians in the Negev region each fathers up to 40
children, according to Palestinian sources.

On April 18, 1948, Palestinian Tiberius was captured by Menachem
Begin's Irgun group, putting its 5,500 Palestinian residents in
flight. On April 22, Haifa fell to the Zionist mobs and 70,000
Palestinians fled.

On April 25, Irgun began bombarding civilian sectors of the
Palestinian city of Jaffa - the largest city in Palestine at that
time, terrifying the 750,000 inhabitants into panicky flight.

On May 14, the day before the creation of Israel on the rubble of
Palestine and bodies of the Palestinians, Jaffa completely surrendered
to the much better-equipped Zionist gangs and only about 4,500 of its
population remained.

`Deterrent Measures'

Israeli officials and academicians have urged the government to take
deterrent measures against the soaring Palestinian birth rate in
Negev, suggesting a law banning polygamy, Al-Quds Press said.

Israeli occupation authorities are already giving the Negev
Palestinians hard time, depriving them of basic amenities under feeble
excuses, preventing them from building homes and encouraging settlers
to move in, it added.

Some reports even suggested that Israeli authorities sprayed
Palestinians' crops in the area with killer chemicals.

Israeli Vice Prime Minister Shimon Peres is overseeing the Jewish
settlement activity in the Negev.

He has drawn up a ten-year plan costing billions of dollars to develop
the area and offer all possible privileges to Jewish settlers.

Demographic Battle

According to 2004 estimates by the Palestine Bureau of Statistics,
Palestinians are projected to outnumber the Jewish population in the
1948 occupied Palestinian territories by 2010.

Given the current 4% birth rate against a Jewish 1.9%, the Palestinian
population is expected to rise to 6.2 million compared to 5.7 million
Israelis.

Israel entices Jews worldwide, especially from North America, India
and Ethiopia, and further, to leave their homelands and immigrate to
face the growing Palestinian population.

Last July, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon urged all French Jews [
http://islamonline.net/English/News/2004-07/19/article01.shtml ] to
leave France as early as possible in protest at what he called
soaring anti-Semitism.

However, Israel's demographic efforts have received a serious setback
recently by the reverse Jewish immigration thanks to the second
Palestinian Intifada, which enters its fifth year this September.

The Jewish Agency has also admitted that the Al-Aqsa Intifada and
sluggish Israeli economy had led to a significant dwindling of Jewish
immigration to Israel in 2003.

As many as 600,000 Israeli Jews have become permanent citizens in
North America, Australia, or Europe since the beginning of the
Intifada, according to unofficial estimates.

The Polish embassy in Tel Aviv said in November it was striving to
cope with a sweeping number of Israelis, young and old, applying for a
Polish passport, opting for a better life back in their native country.

[IslamCity] THE CAUSES OF ANGER AND ITS MEDICINE by IMAM GHAZALI

2005-06-02 Thread best wishes

THE CAUSES OF ANGER AND ITS MEDICINE From Imam Ghazali's book "Ihyaa Uloom ad Deen"
Know, O dear readers, that the medecine of a disease is to remove the root cause of that disease. Isa (Jesus Christ) -peace be upon him- was once asked: "What thing is difficult?" He said: "God's wrath." Prophet Yahya (John the Baptist) -peace be upon him- then asked: "What thing takes near the wrath of God?" He said:"Anger". Yahya - peace be upon him- asked him:"What thing grows and increases anger?" Isa -peace be upon him- said:"Pride, prestige, hope for honour and haughtiness"
The causes which cause anger to grow are self-conceit, self-praise, jests and ridicule, argument, treachery, too much greed for too much wealth and name and fame. If these evils are united in a person, his conduct becomes bad and he cannot escape anger.
So these things should be removed by their opposites. Self-praise is to be removed by modesty. Pride is to be removed by one's own origin and birth, greed is to be removed by remaining satisfied with necessary things, and miserliness by charity.
The prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "A strong man is not he who defeats his adversary by wrestling, but a strong man is he who controls himself at the time of anger."
We are describing below the medecines of anger after one gets angry. The medecine is a mixture of knowledge and action. The medecine based on knowledge is of six kinds:
(1) The first medecine of knowledge is to think over the rewards of appeasing anger, that have come from the verses of the Quran and the sayings of the Prophet (pbuh). Your hope for getting rewards of appeasing anger will restrain you from taking revenge.
(2) The second kind of medecine based on knowledge is to fear the punishment of God and to think that the punishment of God upon me is greater than my punishment upon him. If I take revenge upon this man for anger, God will take revenge upon me on the Judgement Day.
(3) The third kind of medecine of anger based on knowledge is to take precaution about punishment of enemity and revenge on himself. You feel joy in having your enemy in your presence in his sorrows, You yourself are not free from that danger. You will fear that your enemy might take revenge against you in this world and in the next.
(4) Another kind of medecine based on knowledge is to think about the ugly face of the angry man, which is just like that of the ferocious beast. He who appeases anger looks like a sober and learned man.
(5) The fifth kind of medecine based on knowledgeis to think that the devil will advise by saying: " You will be weak if you do not get angry!" Do not listen to him!
(6) The sixth reason is to think: " What reason have I got to get angry? What Allah wishes has occured!"
Medecine based on action
When you get angry, say: I seek refuge in God from the accursed evil (A'oudhou billaahi min as shaytaan ir rajeem). The prophet (pbuh) ordered us to say thus.
When Ayesha (RA) got angry, he dragged her by the nose and said: " O dear Ayesha, say: O God, you are the Lord of my prophet Muhammad, forgive my sins and remove the anger from my heart and save me from misguidance."
If anger does not go by this means, you will sit down if you are standing, lie down if you are sitting, and come near to earth, as you have been created of earth. Thus make yourself calm like the earth. The cause of wrath is heat and its opposite is to lie down on the ground and to make the body calm and cool.
The prophet (pbuh) said: Anger is a burning coal. Don't you see your eyebrows wide and eyes reddish? So when one of you feels angry, let him sit down if standing, and lie down if sitting.
If still anger does not stop, make ablution with cold water or take a bath, as fire cannot be extinguished without water.
The prophet (pbuh) said : " When one of you gets angry, let him make ablution with water as anger arises out of fire." In another narration, he said:" Anger comes from the devil and the devil is made of fire."
Hazrat Ali (RA) said: The prophet did not get angry for any action of the world. When any true matter charmed him, nobody knew it and nobody got up to take revenge for his anger. HE GOT ANGRY ONLY FOR TRUTH.

[IslamCity] I feel myself slipping away

2005-06-02 Thread Ayesha Johnson
I feel myself slipping away from Islam. Not that I want to be another
religion, but I'll just been getting caught-up in the streets. I pray
all the time that I never go astray, but my prayers don't seem like they
are being answered. What dua' should I say or what should I do?
