Boycott Israel [IslamCity] Somalia: Islamic Forces Recapture Burhakaba from Ethiopian Military Troops
Somalia: Islamic Courts Forces, Local Militias Recapture Burhakaba Shabelle Media Network Shabelle Media Network (Mogadishu)October 9, 2006Posted to the web October 9, 2006 Aweys Osman YusufMogadishu Reports from Burhakaba say the Ethiopian and Somali government troops that took control of the district have pulled out returning to their base in Baidoa. Residential militias accompanied by the Union of Islamic Courts with two battlewagons mounted with anti-aircraft guns recaptured Burhakaba, 180 km southwest of the capital. Earlier the Islamic Courts in Mogadishu said they sent more of their troops and battlewagons to Burhakaba to evict the Ethiopians.Islamic Courts forces.Residential militias accompanied by the Union of Islamic Courts retook control of Burhakaba, 180 kilometers southwest of Mogadishu, from Ethiopian and Somali government troops. Courts leader Sheik Sharif Ahmed has called for a "holy war" against foreign troops in the country. Mr Ahmed is seen as the Islamists' moderate voice Somalia's Islamists have accused Ethiopian troops of attacking a town and have vowed a "holy war" in revenge. The town of Bur Haqaba lies on the road from the government base in Baidoa to the Islamist-held capital, Mogadishu. Ethiopia denies that its troops have crossed the border but does support the government against the Islamists. An Islamist leader, wearing fatigues and holding an AK-47, said a "jihad" had been declared on Ethiopia, raising fears of a regional conflict."Heavily armed Ethiopian troops have invaded Somalia," said Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, seen as a moderate within the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC)."They have captured Bur Haqaba. History shows that Somalis always win when they are attacked from outside." Second frontResidents of the town, 60km from Baidoa on the main road to Mogadishu, say government fighters backed up by Ethiopians, took the town, before the Islamists recaptured it several hours later. No fighting has been reported in either takeover - each side withdrew in the face of the other's advance. The government has not yet commented on the claims. But an Ethiopian foreign ministry official told the BBC there were "no Ethiopian troops across the border.""The UIC are using Ethiopia as a pretext to hide their motives behind a curtain."Earlier, the BBC's Mohammed Olad Hassan in Baidoa saw a convoy of Ethiopian army trucks pass through, with about 200 troops. Government forces may also be preparing a second front. Boycott Israel [IslamCity] OIC Spokesman deplores the act of caricaturing of Prophet Muhammad again-- http://www.oic-oci.org/press/English/2006/october%202006/answer.htm
Answer to questions from the media organs The OIC Spokesman deplores the act of caricaturing of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) by the youth members of the Danish Peoples Party and the same being shown regrettably on the State Television. The running of the footage affected the sensibilities of civilized people and religious beliefs of one fifth of humanity. In the recent series of provocations and Islamophobic acts, the Muslim community world over have strongly advocated observance of restraint and counselled for understanding the tolerant and peaceful Islam. At the same time the Muslims have noted with concern that the values of tolerance are eroding and there is now shrinking space for others religious, social and cultural values in the west. The OIC has always favoured upholding freedom of _expression_. Simultaneously it is the ethical, moral and political responsibility of public opinion leaders, governments, state and civil society institutions in the West to discourage acts of intolerance by condemning them, whenever there are such manifestations out of either ignorance or ingrained prejudices. At the same time, the OIC is of the view that its position on enacting international measures to discourage such acts which was referred in its communiqués in February 2006 has been vindicated as their absence continues to demonize sacred symbols of Islam, deliberately provoke moderate and peaceful Muslim believers and unwittingly widens the divide between the people and strains normal socio-economic and cultural relations. Boycott Israel [IslamCity] Ramadan : Renewal of Identity with the Ummah / Taqwa
Renewal of Identity with the Ummah: Ramadan is not an individual experience only, but it is an experience in community. The whole Muslim Ummah fasts together in one and the same month. We identify with one another in our obedience to Allah. This gives us a new sense of togetherness and association. Ramadan teaches us that the Muslim Ummah is the community of piety and devotion to Allah and its members derive their strength from each other in deeds of piety and virtue. The bonds that are based on piety and virtue are the strongest bonds and it is these bonds that prove good for mankind. Ramadan leaves an imprint of all these values upon the Muslim Ummah. Taqwa: To summarise all the moral and spiritual gifts of Ramadan, we can say that Ramadan gives us the great gift of Taqwa. Taqwa is the sum total of Islamic life. It is the highest of all virtues in the Islamic scheme of things. It means, God-consciousness, piety, fear and awe of Allah and it signifies submission to Allah and total commitment to all that is good and rejection of all that is evil and bad.” __._,_.___ *** {Invite (mankind, O Muhammad ) to the Way of your Lord (i.e. Islam) with wisdom (i.e. with the Divine Inspiration and the Qur'an) and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better. Boycott Israel [IslamCity] Devotion in Salaat
In the Name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful In Verse 2.238,the Qur'aandirects the believers to stand in Salaat, completely in devotion to Allah, and to Allah alone. It directs them therein, moreover, to protect all their prayers (Salawaat) in like manner. Do we, as Muslims, follow those divine directions? The sad fact is: most of us do not! Many of us do go through the ritual of Salaat, but our minds wander. They dwell on matters pertaining to our businesses, workplaces, neighbours, relatives, families - in short, to any sort of worldly affair. Our thoughts seldom remain devoted to Allah. And to make the matter worse, we have come to believe that such straying of thoughts, while offering Salaat,is a normal thing! But what does the Qur'aan say? It forebodessorrow, distress or troublefor those who are negligent/inattentive in their prayers!! [107.4,5] And if we do believe in the Qur'aan -as we vehemently say we do -we are doomedto suffer in terms ofthose Verses in Surah 107. And do we need any proof that we aresuffering, in this very worldly life? Hardly. Our position, as a community, in the polity of nationsis despicable, as any one can see. We have become the favourite whipping boys for any Tom, Dickor Harry everyshere in the world. It is grievously wrong on our part therefore to treat the straying of our thoughts as something normal. We've got to do something about it. What do we do? First and foremost, we stop thinking that it is normal for our thoughts to wander while in a ritual Salaat. Second, we realise that our thoughts wander because our Faith is superficial. The Faith has not gone deep into our hearts. We're hardly interested in studying the Qur'aan, theCreator's Manualfor the right conduct ofour worldly lives. We've to shed our indifference to this most important Book that every human being is duty-bound to read and study. Third, we've to shorten our Salaat, till at least the Faith really enters our hearts. Allah would look to the quality, rather than to the quantity, of our prayers. The longer the duration of the prayers, the greater would be the tendency of our minds to wander. Our Wise Lord has therefore prescribed only short ritual prayers after long intervals of day time. Another thing, that has contributed to our undoing, is our blatant disregard to the divineedicts: "...and be attentive at every place of worship and invoke Him alone to make the Religion exclusive for Him..." [7.29] "And the Masaajid are for Allah Alone; so invoke not anyone with Allah." [72.18] We have to ponder deeply on these edicts. Aren't most of us violating them, in letter and in spirit? Boycott Israel [IslamCity] Generals rattle their sabres in Turkey --from al-ahram weekly
Dear members, Assalamu Alaikum. Please see this report on Turkey from Al-Ahram weekly. What is the history of this insolance of Turkish Army and who back them from behind for their arrogance?. Obviously not friends of Islam or Turkey. Shah Abdul Hannan Generals rattle their sabres Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan last week scrambled to defuse growing tensions with the country's new hardline high command as the Turkish military once again began to flex its political muscles, reports Gareth Jenkins from Ankara Last week, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan announced plans to establish a network of formal and informal contacts with the country's powerful military in order to try to defuse tensions in the run-up to presidential and parliamentary elections in 2007. Erdogan's announcement follows a series of public statements by top commanders in recent weeks warning that the secular Turkish republic was under threat. On 3 October, in a speech carried live on 11 national television channels, the new Chief of Staff General Yasar Buyukanit accused leading members of the government of trying to undermine secularism and reiterated the military's determination to combat what he described as religious fundamentalism. In a country where the military has staged four coups in the last 46 years, most recently in 1997, few are prepared to treat the warning lightly. Since it took power in November 2002, the moderate Islamist Justice and Development Party (JDP) has been viewed with deep suspicion by most of the Turkish military. But Buyukanit's predecessor General Hilmi Ozkok, who was chief of staff from August 2002 to August 2006, enjoyed a relatively cordial working relationship with the JDP, adopting a low-key public profile while Erdogan resisted pressure to push through measures demanded by the JDP's grassroots supporters. These include easing restrictions on religious education and lifting the ban on women in headscarves attending university, or working in state institutions. One of the reasons for Ozkok adopting such a low profile was that, unusually for a leading Turkish commander, he was a deeply devout Muslim himself and thus less worried by a moderate Islamist government. The other was that he was aware that any direct military interference in politics could jeopardise Turkey's chances of EU membership. But Ozkok was an exception. Very few in the Turkish military share his sanguine view of the JDP. In recent years, most have been biding their time, waiting for Ozkok to retire and relying on Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, himself a staunch secularist, to use his presidential veto to keep the JDP in line. But Sezer is due to step down in May next year and is expected to be replaced either by Erdogan himself or by someone else with strong Islamist sympathies. While problems in Turkey's relations with the EU mean that not only is accession becoming an increasingly distant prospect, but as well, that public support for the EU is also plummeting. The most recent opinion polls suggest that only around 45 per cent of the Turkish population now support EU membership, down from 78 per cent two years ago. With little to lose and in the absence of an effective political opposition in parliament it is not just hardliners in the military who are looking to their commanders to curb the perceived Islamist ambitions of the JDP, many civilian secularists are too. There is a widespread fear that if a suitable candidate can be appointed to the presidency, the JDP government will attempt to push through a series of measures to placate its pious grassroots in the run-up to parliamentary elections, which are expected to be held in early autumn 2007. When he took over as chief of staff at the end of August, Buyukanit was under immense pressure to deliver a stern warning to the government. So far, he has not disappointed expectations in this direction. After Buyukanit spoke on 3 October, retired General Hussein Kivrikoglu, who served as chief of staff from 1998 to 2002, was quoted in the Turkish media as declaring that: "At last our four-year silence has been broken." Last week, Erdogan announced that he would try to ease the military's concerns by sending ministers to give formal briefings to leading generals. Informal contacts have been encouraged meanwhile, between members of the government and the military at social
Boycott Israel [IslamCity] Army Could Be Broken by Iraq (Praise Be To God) Warns British Army Chief
Occupied Iraq Today What Has Happened to the BOLD Statements Uttered by the US Administration - "We Don't Cut Run. We Don't Start Fights, But We Finish Them. Amidst Much Flag Waving at the Beginning of the Invasion. - ABArmy Could be Broken by Iraq, Warns Chief OfficerBy TIM SHIPMAN Last updated at 11:44am on 13th October 2006 http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=410163in_page_id=1770ico=Homepageicl=TabModuleicc=NEWSct=5The Army could 'break' if it is kept too long in Iraq and British troops should be withdrawn 'soon', the head of the Army has said today. In a devastating broadside at Tony Blair's foreign policy, General Sir Richard Dannatt said: "I want an Army in five years time and 10 years time. Don't let's break it on this one. Let's keep an eye on time." His comments come after an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail, where Sir Richard warned that the continuing presence of British troops "exacerbates the security problems" in Iraq and added that a "moral and spiritual vacuum" has opened up in British society, which is allowing Muslim extremists to undermine "our accepted way of life." The Chief of the General Staff believes that Christian values are under threat in Britain and that continuing to fight in Iraq will only make the situation worse. His views will send shockwaves through Government. They are a total repudiation of the Prime Minister, who has repeatedly insisted that British presence in Iraq is morally right and has had no effect on our domestic security. Sir Richard, who took up his post earlier this year, warned that "our presence in Iraq exacerbates" the "difficulties we are facing around the world." He lambasts Tony Blair's desire to forge a "liberal democracy" in Iraq as a "naive" failure and he warns that "whatever consent we may have had in the first place" from the Iraqi people "has largely turned to intolerance." In one of the most outspoken interviews ever given by a serving soldier, Sir Richard also reveals: * He was "outraged" by reports of injured soldiers recouperating in hospital alongside civilians being confronted by anti-war campaigners who told them to remove their uniforms. * He gave Defence Secretary Des Browne a dressing down about the "unaccepatble" treatment of injured soldiers, warning him that the government was in danger of breaking the "covenant" between a nation and its Army and should not "let the Army down." * He understands why Prince William and Prince Harry want to serve on the frontline but has not yet decided whether they will be allowed to fight in Afghanistan. But it is Sir Richard's views of the situation in Iraq that will enrage Downing Street. He says clearly we should "get ourselves out sometime soon because our presence exacerbates the security problems." "We are in a Muslim country and Muslims' views of foreigners in their country are quite clear." As a foreigner, you can be welcomed by being invited in a country, but we werent invited certainly by those in Iraq at the time. "The military campaign we fought in 2003 effectively kicked the door in. Whatever consent we may have had in the first place, may have turned to tolerance and has largely turned to intolerance." "That is a fact. I dont say that the difficulties we are experiencing round the world are caused by our presence in Iraq but undoubtedly our presence in Iraq exacerbates them." In comments that set him at loggerheads with Mr Blair, Gen Dannatt warns that the good intentions of 2003 have long since evaporated - pitching British troops into a lethal battle that few at home can understand. "I think history will show that the planning for what happened after the initial successful war fighting phase was poor, probably based more on optimism than sound planning," he said. "The original intention was that we put in place a liberal democracy that was an exemplar for the region, was pro West and might have a beneficial effect on the balance within the Middle East." "That was the hope, whether that was a sensible or naïve hope history will judge. I dont think we are going to do that. I think we should aim for a lower ambition." The Prime Minister has repeatedly insisted that British troops must stay until the Iraqi security forces are able to take charge - a forlorn hope as the country has slipped to the brink of civil war. Sir Richard warned that the consequences will be felt at home, where failure to support Christian values is allowing a predatory Islamist vision to take hold. He said: "When I see the Islamist threat in this country I hope it doesnt make undue progress because there is a moral and spiritual vacuum in this country." "Our society has always been embedded in Christian values; once you have pulled the anchor up there is a danger that our society moves with the prevailing wind." Boycott Israel [IslamCity] Mighty America KILLS 655,000 Iraqis Since invasion
Iraq The BUCK Stops With the US Whatever That is Taking Place in Iraq Today, the US Administration Has to Take Responsibility. They Invaded the Country, Toppled the Govt, Dismantled the Entire Security State Apparatus. By Doing All This They Made Themselves the SOLE Authority of Iraq. - AB '655,000 Iraqis Killed Since Invasion'Sarah Boseley, health editorWednesday October 11, 2006The Guardianhttp://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,,1892888,00.htmlThe death toll among Iraqis as a result of the US-led invasion has now reached an estimated 655,000, a study in the Lancet medical journal reports today. The figure for the number of deaths attributable to the conflict - which amounts to around 2.5% of the population - is at odds with figures cited by the US and UK governments and will cause a storm, but the Lancet says the work, from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, has been examined and validated by four separate independent experts who all urged publication. In October 2004, the same researchers published a study estimating that 100,000 Iraqis had died as a result of the war since the beginning of the March 2003 invasion, a figure that was hugely controversial. Their new study, they say, reaffirms the accuracy of their survey of two years ago and moves it on. "Although such death rates might be common in times of war, the combination of a long duration and tens of millions of people affected has made this the deadliest international conflict of the 21st century and should be of grave concern to everyone," write the authors, Gilbert Burnham and colleagues. "At the conclusion of our 2004 study we urged that an independent body assess the excess mortality that we saw in Iraq. This has not happened. We continue to believe that an independent international body to monitor compliance with the Geneva conventions and other humanitarian standards in conflict is urgently needed. With reliable data, those voices that speak out for civilians trapped in conflict might be able to lessen the tragic human cost of future wars." The epidemiological research was carried out on the ground by teams of doctors moving from house to house, questioning families and examining death certificates. Between May and July this year, they visited 1,849 households in 47 separated clusters across the length and breadth of Iraq. The doctors asked about deaths among members of the household in a period before the invasion, from January 2002 to March 2003, and about deaths since. In 92% of cases, they were shown death certificates confirming the cause. A total of 629 deaths were reported, of which 547 - or 87% - occurred after the invasion. The mortality rate before the war was 5.5 per 1,000, but since the invasion, it has risen to 13.3 per 1,000 per year, they say. Between June 2005 and June 2006, the mortality rate hit a high of 19.8 per 1,000. Thus they calculate that 654,965 Iraqis have died as a consequence of the invasion. It is an estimate and the mid-point, and most likely of a range of numbers that could also be correct in the context of their statistical analysis. But even the lowest number in the range - 392,979 - is higher that anyone else has suggested. Of the deaths, 31% were ascribed to the US-led forces. Most deaths were from gunshot wounds (56%), with a further 13% from car bomb injuries and 14% the result of other explosions. "Since 2004, and especially recently," writes the Lancet editor, Richard Horton in a commentary, "independent observers have recognised that the security situation in Iraq has deteriorated dramatically." The new study, he continues, "corroborate the impression that Iraq is descending into bloodthirsty chaos". Yet, he writes, "absolute despair would be the wrong response. Instead, the disaster that is the west's current strategy in Iraq must be used as a constructive call to the international community to reconfigure its foreign policy around human security rather than national security, around health and wellbeing in addition to the protection of territorial boundaries and economic stability. "Health is now the most important foreign policy issue of our time. Health and wellbeing - their underpinning values, their diverse array of interventions and their goals of healing - offer several original dimensions for a renewed foreign policy that might at least be one positive legacy of our misadventure in Iraq."AB [EMAIL PROTECTED] "For to us will be their return; then it will be for us to call them to account." Boycott Israel [IslamCity] God Has 99 Names
Islamic tradition counts 99 names or attributes for God. I want to reflect on them and try to understand what they mean for me. By Hesham Hassaballa, October 11, 2006 Islamic tradition counts 99 names or attributes for God. It gives one only a glimpse, a small one at that, into the beauty that is God. And yet, He is not circumscribed by these attributes; He is more than they. Still, it allows the finite human mind to know Who his or her fully unknowable Creator is.Yet, what should we do with them? Many Muslims have the names of God in beautiful frames hung on the walls of their homes. Some have them hung around their necks. Some sing the names in songs or prayer sessions. Some repeat the names over and over. All of these are good things. I want to go even further: I want to reflect on these names and attributes and try to understand what they mean for me.I have already discussed how "Allah" is not some moon god, but the Arabic name of the One and Only God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Ishmael. Now, I will reflect on the two names that begin each and every post on my blog: Ar-Rahman, Ar-Raheem.These words are very difficult to truly translate, very difficult to fully convey the beautiful meanings of these two most beautiful words. I translate them at "The Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful." But they mean more than that - much more.My very existence on this earth is testimony to the truth of these two attributes. The fact that I continue to walk this earth shows the unending mercy and compassion of our Lord. Each day, I continue to commit sins, continue to disobey the Lord despite everything He has given me, despite all the Grace He has shown me from the very beginning of my life.Yet, I am spared. I am spared His justice. He would be just to strike me down for all the insolence I have shown Him. Yet, He doesn't. He continues to bless me. He continues to give me His Grace. He continues to shower me with mercy and compassion. I love Him. I love Him with all my heart, all my soul, all my mind. I love Him with everything I can muster.Yet, I still sin. I still disobey Him. I still fall short of His standard which He sets out for me. And His mercy continues to fall upon me like a fresh and sweet spring rain, bringing life and breath after the long, dark death of winter. There is nothing I could say or do that would even come close to repaying the Precious for all that He has done for me and continues to do for me.Each breath I take is like a shout out to the heavens and earth that my God is the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful. Each breath itself is a miracle. With each passing moment that I live, His mercy is manifested. With each passing moment that is free of disease, so many processes in the body had to work exactly and correctly together, and that is because of His mercy. I have felt the powerful pain of disease: health is part and parcel of God's mercy. He gave me life when I was nothing. He gave me life when He knows that I could never, ever repay Him for His gift. Is that not out of love? Is that not out of mercy? Is He not the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful? With each day that I lay to sleep - having sinned so much - He gives me a chance to come back to Him, to repent for my misdeeds. Each time I forget to ask His forgiveness for the sins that I have already committed, He gives me a chance to remember Him and come back to His Light and Soothing Presence. If I were to drift off His glorious path, He waits for me to come back to that path, and He is there with open arms, happy to see me again. He is happy to see me even if my sojourn away from Him was years. Is He not the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful? Each day I live and breathe, I feel his mercy. All I have to do is look around me. The warmth of a mid-October sun, even though it should be much colder than it actually is. The green of the grass, the leaves on the trees, the bright white clouds against the backdrop of a clear, deep blue sky. The mystical sounds of a babbling brook, with the water joyfully tumbling over red, green, and yellow stones. The peaceful hush of trees or large, tall grasses blowing in the wind. Even the buzz of insects - my least favorite creature - testifies to God's Grace and Mercy. When the rain falls, and the earth cools from its life-giving waters, the sound of the water's pitter patter on my roof lulls me to sleep. The fact that I have a roof on which the rain's life-giving waters pitter patter is itself tremendous compassion and mercy, for there are too many people who do not have roofs, and they have to endure the pitter patter of rain on their faces and bodies. Even the frightening crash of thunder and blinding flashes of lightning testify to God's Mercy. I am enveloped all around by the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful. There is no where that I could go in the universe without being caressed - willingly or unwillingly - by the Most Compassionate, the Most

Boycott Israel [IslamCity] Israel Used New Weapon Prototype in Gaza (Palestine Chronicle)
Italian Probe: Israel Used New Weapon Prototype in Gaza Strip Wounds inflicted by the experimental weapons used in strike on the Gaza Strip The investigative team is the same one that exposed, several months ago, the use by U.S. forces in Iraq of phosphorous bombs, against Iraqi rebels in Faluja. By Meron RapoportHaaretz Correspondent An investigative report to be aired on Italian television Wednesday raises the possibility that Israel has used an experimental weapon in the Gaza Strip in recent months, causing especially serious physical injuries, such as amputated limbs and severe burns. The weapon is similar to one developed by the U.S. military, known as DIME, which causes a powerful and lethal blast, but only within a relatively small radius. The Italian report is based on the eyewitness accounts of medical doctors in the Strip, as well as tests carried out in an Italian laboratory. The investigative team is the same one that exposed, several months ago, the use by U.S. forces in Iraq of phosphorous bombs, against Iraqi rebels in Faluja. Israel Air Force Maj.-Gen (res.) Yitzhak Ben-Israel, formerly head of the IDF's weapons-development program, told the Italian reporters that "one of the ideas [behind the weapon] is to allow those targeted to be hit without causing damage to bystanders or other persons." The investigation, by Rai24news, follows reports by Gaza-based doctors of inexplicably serious injuries. The doctors reported an exceptionally large number of wounded who lost legs, of completely burned bodies and injuries unaccompanied by metal shrapnel. Some of the doctors also claimed that they removed particles from wounds that could not be seen in an x-ray machine. According to those who testified, the wounded were hit by munitions launched from drones, most of them in July. Dr. Habas al-Wahid, head of the emergency room at the Shuhada al-Aqsa hospital, in Deir el-Balah, told the reporters that the legs of the injured were sliced from their bodies "as if a saw was used to cut through the bone." There were signs of heat and burns near the point of the amputation, but no signs that the dismemberment was caused by metal fragments. Dr. Juma Saka, of Shifa Hospital, in Gaza City, said the doctors found small entry wounds on the bodies of the wounded and the dead. According to Saka, a powder was found on the victims' bodies and in their internal organs. "The powder was like microscopic shrapnel, and these are what likely caused the injuries," Saka said. The Italian investigative team raised the possibility that the IDF is making use of a weapon similar in character to DIME - Dense Inert Metal Explosive - developed for the U.S. military. According to the official website of a U.S. air force laboratory, it is a "focused lethality" weapon, which aims to accurately destroy the target while causing minimum damage to the surrounding. According to the site, the projectile comprises a carbon-fiber casing filled with tungsten powder and explosives. In the explosion, tungsten particles - a metal capable of conducting very high temperatures - spread over a radius of four meters and cause death. According to the U.S.-based website Defense-Tech, "the result is an incredibly destructive blast in a small area" and "the destructive power of the mixture causes far more damage than pure explosive." It adds that "the impact of the micro-shrapnel seems to cause a similar but more powerful effect than a shockwave." The weapon is supposed to still be in the testing phase and has not been used on the battlefield. The Italian reporters sent samples of the particles found in wounds of injured in the Gaza Strip to a laboratory at the University of Parma. Dr. Carmela Vaccaio said that in analyzing the samples, she found "a very high concentration of carbon and the presence of unusual materials," such as copper, aluminum and tungsten. Dr. Vaccaio says these findings "could be in line with the hypothesis" that the weapon in question is DIME. On the matter of DIME, Ben-Israel told the Italian reporters that "this is a technology that allows the striking of very small targets." The report says that the weapon is not banned by international law, especially since it has not been officially tested. It is believed that the weapon is highly carcinogenic and harmful to the environment. The non-governmental organization Physicians for Human Rights has written to Defense Minister Amir Peretz requesting explanations for the aforementioned injuries to Palestinians. Amos Gilad, a senior adviser to the minister, is supposed to meet with the group on the matter in the near future. © http://www.haaretz.com, October 10, 2006. http://www.palestinechronicle.com/story-10110663138.htm Show Your Support The Palestine Chronicle is 100% reader-supported. Boycott Israel [IslamCity] Moderate Europeans losing faith in Islam
Moderate Europeans losing faith in Islam By Dan Bilefsky and Ian Fisher International Herald Tribune, The New York TimesPublished: October 11, 2006BRUSSELS Europe appears to be crossing an invisible line regarding its Muslim minorities: More people in the political mainstream are arguing that Islam cannot be reconciled with European values. "You saw what happened with the pope," said Patrick Goeman, 43, the owner of Raga, a funky wine bar in central Antwerp, half an hour outside Brussels. "He said Islam is an aggressive religion. And the next day they kill a nun somewhere and make his point. "Rationality is gone." Goeman is hardly an extremist. In fact, he organized a protest last week in which 20 bars and restaurants closed on the night when a far-right party with an anti-Muslim message held a rally nearby. His worry is shared by centrists across Europe disturbed that any criticism of Islam or Muslim immigration provokes threats of violence. For years, those who raised their voices were mostly on the far right. Now those normally seen as moderates - ordinary people as well as politicians - are asking whether once unquestioned values of tolerance and multiculturalism should have limits. Jack Straw, the former British foreign secretary and prominent Labour Party politician, seemed to sum up the moment last week when he wrote that he felt uncomfortable addressing women whose faces were covered with a veil. The veil, he wrote, is a "visible statement of separation and difference." When Pope Benedict XVI made a speech last month that included a quotation calling aspects of Islam "evil and inhuman," Muslims berated him for stigmatizing their culture, while non-Muslims applauded him for bravely speaking a hard truth. The line between open criticism of another group and bigotry can be a thin one, and many Muslims worry that it is being crossed more and more. Whatever the motivations, "the reality is that views on both sides are becoming more extreme," said Imam Wahid Pedersen, a prominent Dane who is a convert to Islam. "It has become politically correct to attack Islam, and this is making it hard for moderates on both sides to remain reasonable." Pedersen fears that onetime moderates are baiting Muslims, the very people they say should integrate into Europe. The worries about extremism are real. A far-right party, Vlaams Belang, took 20.5 percent of the vote in Belgian city elections on Sunday, five percentage points higher than in 2000. But in Antwerp, its base, its performance barely improved, suggesting to some experts that its power might be peaking. In Austria this month, right-wing parties also did well, on a campaign promise that had rarely been made openly: that Austria should start to deport its immigrants. Vlaams Belang, too, has suggested "repatriation" for immigrants who do not made greater efforts to integrate. The idea is unthinkable to mainstream leaders, but many Muslims still fear that the day - or at least a debate on the topic - may be one terroristic attack away. "I think the time will come," said Amir Shafe, 34, a Pakistani who earns a good living selling clothes at a market in Antwerp. He deplores terrorism and says he does not sense hostility in Belgium. But he said, "We are now thinking of going back to our country, before that time comes." Many experts note the centuries of bloodily defining the boundaries of Christianity and Islam, including the Muslim conquest of Palestine in 635 and the subsequent Crusades, and the Moors' conquest of Spain and Portugal in the eighth century and the Christians' victory in 1492. A sense of guilt over Europe's colonial past and then World War II, when intolerance exploded into mass murder, allowed a large migration to occur without any uncomfortable debates over the real differences between migrant and host. Then the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, jolted Europe into new awareness and worry. The subsequent Madrid and London transit bombings and the murder of the Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh by a Dutch-born Muslim stand as examples of the extreme. But many Europeans - even those who generally support immigration - have begun talking more bluntly about cultural differences, specifically about Muslims' deep religious beliefs and social values, which are far more conservative than those of most Europeans on issues like women's rights and homosexuality. "A lot of people, progressive ones - we are not talking about nationalists or the extreme right - are saying, 'Now we have this religion, it plays a role and it challenges our assumptions about what we learned in the '60s and '70s,'" said Joost Lagendijk, a Dutch member of the European Parliament for the Green Left Party who is active on Muslim issues. "So there is this fear," he said, "that we are being transported back in a time machine where we have to explain to our immigrants that there is equality between men and women,
