So it's something I'll probably do after Devoxx.

1) right now, there is already some kind of moderation.
Every day, I manually remove the SPAM that is sent to

What really annoys me, is the fact that services such

I really appreciate the fact that third party services
archive all mail to the list (because the archives at

Developers that work like this don't realize the

approve every mail that is sent to the list by people

Because of the architecture of the mailing list, there
are no possibilities for a different kind of moderation.
For instance: once a SPAM message gets through, there's
no way to remove it. It has been sent to all subscribers
and it's archived on all archive sites.

2) That's why I have been thinking of switching to a forum
that can be read by every one but where only registered
users can post. I've set up such a forum:
http://itextpdf.com/forum/
but I'm waiting to activate it until I've made some decisions.
(Some people have already tried to register, but I don't
allow anyone yet). The decisions I have to make are:
- should I ask a fee for registration?
- is there a way to check if somebody has the book
   (wouldn't it be ideal if only those who own the book can
   post questions?)
- should I allow people to register for free?
   In any case, I WILL NO LONGER ACCEPT ANONYMOUS PEOPLE.
   All hotmail, gmail, and other free accounts will be
   banned, except if there's a way to check the identity
   of the person who owns it. (But how else can this be done
   than by asking a fee to register?)

With the book (almost) finished (it should go to print
next week), I'll take a vacation first. (Those who have
read the MEAP of the second edition, know that I'm
attending the International Flanders Film Festival each
year.)

After the film festival, I'll gear up for Devoxx.
I'm making the Conference Guide of this year's edition:

In December, I'll make some decisions. I'm close to
hiring a business developer, and if we make sufficient
money, I'll probably also hire some developers...

[iText-questions] unicode symbols

2010-10-09 Thread Michael Lai
  I am having trouble writing proper unicode symbols. I am converting
some files to pdf and some of them contains em dashes and box characters.

I can write em dashes using \u2014. However, whenever I use \u2550 for
a double line border, nothing appears in the pdf file.

Thanks,
Michael.

There are 1,114,112 code points available in Unicode.
What you are saying is that you expect each font to contain
the description of 1,114,112 glyphs...

Even if it would be reasonable to think so, it's wouldn't
be possible to store all these glyphs in one font in a PDF
document as the maximum number of CIDs in a CMap is 65,535.

Long story short: the font you are using probably doesn't
have a glyph description for \u2550. Look for a font that
knows how to draw \u2550 and use that font.

Quick thought

You can check people have the book by asking for a word on a page as a
condition of application.
Obviously chosen randomly form a list of them to stop someone just posting
the answer somewhere...

Happens with books that have web-content to support the examples i.e.
Peachpit.

Maybe also a quiz that shows you have read the book and FAQ and understand
what iText will NOT do as much as what it will do??

An archive part of a forum would be good as there is no way to check the
answers you have already a patiently given, but as my skills have increased
over the past year I am now getting into things that I never dreamed I would
at the beginning, and my knowledge needs a pointer when I reach the limit of
understanding...

Correct. In theory, the archives are searchable.
In practice, searching the archives is a pain.

Even when I know what I'm looking for (for instance
an answer I remember I have given about 2 months ago),
it takes me too much time to find it in the archives,
even if I know the most relevant keywords in the answer:

 Hello Ed - thanks for your reply. We are submitting the our request from the

I'm very sorry, but you're talking non sense.
You ARE NOT submitting your request from the iText application.

You are using iText to add a submit button to a form.
This form is opened either in the Adobe Reader plug-in
in a browser, or in the standalone Adobe Reader application.

You confirmed this in your follow-up mail to Leonard.

When you invoke such a request on the server from the
browser plug-in, and you return something that is of
type text/plain then you will see that text in the
browser, just as you would if you submitted from a
plain HTML form.

If you do this from the Adobe Reader standalone application,
you'll get an error. This is normal, because Adobe Reader
expects a PDF file, no plain text.

 Our
 objective is to read the retCode from the response in the iTextApplication
 and show it to the user using app.alert(Payment Conf Code);

You can not submit a form and then expect the PDF to trigger a
JavaScript action. You can only achieve this using some workarounds.
For instance: by embedding the PDF in an HTML document and establishing
communication between the JavaScript in the PDF and the JavaScript in
the HTML (this won't work for users that are working on an Apple OS).

Or you can establish a server/client communication if you write a Flash
application for this purpose (this won't work for users with old
versions of Adobe Reader).

 I should have posted the above in the earlier posting. Hope this clarifies
 the question we have :(

It clarifies that you have made some assumptions that are completely
wrong. PLEASE READ THE BOOK and do not post another question before

Hi Roman,

I personally do not think that what you are explaining is a bug. I actually
think it is a better practice to use addCell(cell); From the code it seems
pretty obvious that default layout is intended for only addCell(String)
method and I personally do not like the defaultCell mechanism as it is hard
to track what properties are carried on the default cell. I would rather
instantiate cell explicitly and set properties on that cell alone.

Just my 2 cents.

  Hi there... its great that you, guys, make this Library.

 So about the Bug and Maybe its a Feature. I guess, i can be easily

 tried to Add A Cell through Nested.AddCell(new PdfPCell(...)), the
 default Layout got lost. All Values was setted back to Zero or Null. So
 I've tried to find out what was wrong.

 Usually AddCell(Content) use DefaultCell.Content, but
 AddCell(iTextSharp.text.pdf.PdfPCell) dont use the DefaultCell as
 Container. Its creating new Cell while Runtime from the PdfPCell class.
 I guess, DefaultCell do not Support a Container Cell itself, so it
 cannot be used like DefaultCell.Cell = item; //(as PdfPCell)

 Is it a Feature or kinda BUG?

 Code

 public void AddCell(PdfPCell cell) {
 rowCompleted = false;
 PdfPCell ncell = new PdfPCell(cell);

 int colspan = ncell.Colspan;
 colspan = Math.Max(colspan, 1);
 colspan = Math.Min(colspan, currentRow.Length - currentRowIdx);
 ncell.Colspan = colspan;

 /**

 * @param table the table to be added to the cell
 */
 public void AddCell(PdfPTable table) {
 defaultCell.Table = table;
 AddCell(defaultCell);
 defaultCell.Table = null;
 }

 if its a bug... it can be corrected really easy. Just extract the
 DefaultCell values and put this to ncell in the code above!

 INTERNALLY, the method changes the member value of the width percentage,
 but if you look at the method from the OUTSIDE then it is indeed
 confusing because the method is a setter-method, but there's no
 percentage in the parameters (the percentage is calculated based on
 the points that are passed implicitly with the array and the rectangle).

Thanks for the confirmation. Care to fix that any day by adding better
