[JAWS-Users] I have a new laptop
Hi all, A few weeks ago, I was given a new laptop for my birthday. I have 2 laptops, one for school and the new one. the school one (which I am using now) runs xp professional, and office 2003. The new laptop runs a trial version of office 2007 and windows vista home premium. I have loaded my schools copy of jaws on the computer and it acts as a temporary demo until I buy my own copy. I am trying to decide whether or not to switch back to XP and if possible, office 2003. My family have windows xp pro on a cd, so that part is easy, just not sure if we have a copy of office 2003 as well. I have also downloaded jaws basic training material on office 2007 and vista. I am just wondering if people who use vista out here would tell me their experiences please. the same with office 2007. I feel very lost on the computer at the moment. also, for some strange reason, the keystroke alt F4 doesn't always work, which is obviously really annoying! especially when I have to shut down the computer quickly before I loose speech at the end of the demo time with jaws. any help and information people can provide will be greatly appreciated. you can write to me off list to save traffic if you prefer. to write to me off list, send email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] kind regards, from Andrew Visit the JAWS Users List home page at: http://www.jaws-users.com Visit the Blind Computing home page at: http://www.blind-computing.com Address for the list archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com To post to this group, send email to jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help from Mailman with your account Put the word help in the subject or body of a blank message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Use the following form in order to contact the management team http://www.jaws-users.com/managers.php If you wish to join the Blind Computing list send a blank email to the following address: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [JAWS-Users] I have a new laptop
Hi, Andrew. Dave here. Personally, my expirences with Windows Vista have been absolutely horrid, mostly with program incompatibility issues, and hardware just not working with it. It did not like JAWS of any version, and for the month I had it, it was a non stop headache of one problem after another, including hardware crashes, program crashes, and a total inability to use my computer at all. I finally got fed up with it, and had my rehab officer send my machine back to Dell, and had XP SP3 put back on it. I just got it back a few weeks ago, and have had no problems at all since. And since my machine is a Dell Vostro 1500 with 2 GB of ram, a Intel Dual core processor, and a 145 GB hard drive, that was originally desinged to handle the rigors of Vista, XP SP3 runs on it like a top. [JAWS-Users] RE I have a new laptop
I'm using a laptop with Vista, Office 2007 and JAWS 9 I also use a desktop with XP, Office 2007 and JAWS 9 On the laptop I have noticed an occasional problem with the Alt F4 combination not working. It's a little irritating, but There are other ways around it that are quite quick. Shutting down the computer can be done with the Windows Key to open the main menu, then pressing U to get to the shut down menu. Vista and Office 2007 have some significant changes, and if you are new to them they can be rather frustrating. Remember that many of the key strokes you used in previous versions of Office still work in 2007. Alt O and then F brings you to the Font menu. Alt T and then S opens the spell checker. I stayed with XP on my desk top because of familiarity, but i have come to really like Office 2007. I recommend that those who are new to Office 2007 take some time, when they don't have to get something done and explore. The menus are different, and you just have to learn a few new ways of getting to things. Alt P brings you to the Page menu and then you can tab through the various options there. As you do, take note of the actions you use, and record them on a separate cheat sheet that you can go back to quickly for reference. Eventually you will learn the key strokes and you won't need the cheat sheet as much. The menu's on the top of the screen have different names. But if you go to the Page menu, for example, you can arrow across to the other menus, learn their names and tab through the options under them The Home menu, for example, contains the old Edit menu items. There is a Mailing Tab where you will find the envelope and label options, instead of under the old Tool menu. I think Office 2007 is doable for us since Microsoft has made virtually everything accessible for us. I can understand that you might want to drop Vista if you have had that many problems, but not all of us have those kind of issues with Vista. It's a new OS and It's not surprising that some of us have issues and that we run into glitches. But I wouldn't throw out Vista because of minor problems, and I think I heard that is where this original thread started. David, I'm sorry that you had all the problems you did with Vista. If I were in your shoes, I would have made the same switch. Re: [JAWS-Users] RE I have a new laptop
Tom, I totally agree with you. I have been using Vista for over a year now and I love it! There were some minor issues at first, but once the manufacturers of some hardware products provided the drivers for Vista, it works great. I love the way Vista automatically does a lot of the work for you especially in recognizing networks and the installation of hardware and software. It has become a great operating system, but this is only my opinion. Denny Huff Gateway FT Blind LLC. P.O. Re: [JAWS-Users] Text Aloud
Hi John, Thanks so very much for your detailed answer. It is most helpful. Funny that the software was originally written for sighted people, but it is terrific for us blind folks. Lennie At 10:42 PM 7/23/2008, you wrote: Lenny, there are 2 basic commands for making Text Aloud read a document. But first, you have to display the document on the screen. You can do that by copying the document to your clipboard and then pasting it into the text field on Text Aloud's primary screen. You can also call up a file by using the standard file management commands available under the Alt F menu. READ A DOCUMENT, CONTROL F3 STOP READING, CONTROL F8: You will need Jaws to navigate the menus Lenny, especially at first. You have to choose your default voice, set the reading speed and so on. Once you have everything set up, use Insert F4 to turn Jaws off. Then, use Control F3 to begin reading. The Jaws cursor is very helpful in navigating through the On Screen options such as reading tempo and so on. Once you are familiar with Text Aloud, you can use some of the hotkeys which are built in. There are controls which will adjust the speed and volume of the reading on the fly. They are all in a document which is part of the Jaws Support system. Believe it or not Lenny, this thing wasn't designed for the blind. It was created as a study aid for sighted people who needed to read their documents while doing something else like driving. Can you imagine riding in your car and listening to a pleasant voice reading your own work back to you? That, to me at least, is incredible. Learning to use this tool takes some doing Lenny. There is a lot of help right in the Text Aloud Help file. To get an idea of some of the other controls, press the Alt key and move to the Voice option. Then down arrow and listen to what there is to offer. Once you have become familiar with Text Aloud, you could even use the Sleep Mode in Jaws and turn it off as soon as Text Aloud is opened. Lenny, I absolutely do not recommend this procedure. There is simply too much in Text Aloud which doesn't speak without a screen reader. I hope this helps. Your information has helped me greatly. One question though. How do you get around the problem of both Jaws and Text Aloud speaking simultaneously? That is the one thing that I was concerned about. Again, thanks for your help. Lennie At 03:04 PM 7/20/2008, you wrote: Lenny. John Justice here. I use Text Aloud with ATT voices all of the time. My favorite is Crystal 16. When you choose the voice to read the document, Text Aloud will take you through the choices in all of your SAPIoptions. You can get everything from Microsoft Mary and Mike right up to the latest ATT entries as long as they are loaded correctly in your system and Text Aloud can find them. Some voices use SAPI 4 in lieu of SAPI 5 but not many. In my opinion, based on personal experience, Text Aloud is one of the most effective and useful programs I have ever worked with. As for involvement with Jaws, you can get a situation where Text Aloud and Jaws will read the same document simultaneously. But that can easily be corrected. I hope that explains why I am interested in Text Aloud. As David and others pointed out, he have used it for several years with Sapi 5 voices. I am wondering why ATT voices would not be better than Sapi 5? I have heard sample of ATT voices and in my opinion, I thought that they sounded more realistic. David, any comments on ATT voices? Re: [JAWS-Users] GoldWave question
Hi Rachel, As was mentioned, you can set up the default to save your recording in MP3 format. Personally, when I do a recording, particularly a large file, I save it as a WAV file. The reason for this is that GoldWave can be accessed and saved quicker in this format. If you save the recording in MP3, and you need to do some editing, the retrieval has to convert the file to WAV first and then convert it back to MP3 when saving it. When I have the finished product, then I will convert it to MP3 and delete the WAV file. It is a matter of personal choice. HTH, Lennie At 10:57 PM 7/23/2008, you wrote: So does GoldWave records wave files as it comes from the tape and then I have to convert in MP3? Or is there a way to make the file be MP3 as it is grabbing the sound from the tape? Thanks, and sorry for the ignorance in case it is a obvious answer! Hi Rachel, As David pointed out, GoldWave is a very friendly software to use to record tape and LP. It is more accessible when you use Jaws scripts with it. The scripts can be downloaded from the Jaws Users script page. The URL is below: http://www.jaws-users.com/JAWS/scripts/ There are very good tutorial in using GoldWave by Rick Harmon. [JAWS-Users] networking issues have been resolved
For the longest time I just couldn't get my hoe network to work, these systems just wouldn't speak to each other. Then a week or so ago I got them to play nice but then Web Drive went south. I am proud to say this morning everything is working as advertised and all systems are playing nice with each other. It's time for a doughnut or something like that, it just feels so good when the impossible gets to be the possible. I can FTP up to the server just fine while at the same time share my printer along with files back and forth locally. This was a brain buster for some reason for this humble personage. [JAWS-Users] Question about mud clients
Hi all. I am wondering this. Is there any mud clients that work with jfw well? I know Monky term works fine. But firstly I can't find it. So can anyone tell me which mud client works well with jaws without setting up scripts? Also: I am having a problem. I have used gmud32 on this machine. And I've unchecked everything. But it still speaks words when I am typing with it. How do I turn that all off if any? Thanks. I've tried to uncheck echo... but still no luck. No virus found in this outgoing message. Hi! I was going to suggest gmud. There are scripts available that make it work like a dream. I have them zipped somewhere, and could probably send them if you can't find them. If you uncheck everything and make sure that local echo is disabled, gmud should be working great. Re: [JAWS-Users] Question about mud clients
Hi there. Just wondering about this AVG again. with the older version it used to scan the computer at around eight in the morning our time, so does this latest AVG do the same? I can't hear it scanning if it does, and I don't remember being asked what time for it to scann, or something like that. Hope I haven't confused you, but have totally confused myself.hehehe.kk. - Original Message - From: Derek Roberts [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Friday, July 25, 2008 8:53 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Question about mud clients Hi, What about vipmud from gmagames.com? Anyone else experiencing this or know a setting I can check or uncheck to correct this annoying situation? thanks Al Visit the JAWS Users List home page at: http://www.jaws-users.com Visit the Blind Computing home page at: http://www.blind-computing.com Address for the list archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com To post to this group, send email to jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help from Mailman with your account Put the word help in the subject or body of a blank message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Use the following form in order to contact the management team http://www.jaws-users.com/managers.php If you wish to join the Blind Computing list send a blank email to the following address: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Visit the JAWS Users List home page at: http://www.jaws-users.com Visit the Blind Computing home page at: http://www.blind-computing.com Address for the list archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com To post to this group, send email to jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help from Mailman with your account Put the word help in the subject or body of a blank message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Use the following form in order to contact the management team http://www.jaws-users.com/managers.php If you wish to join the Blind Computing list send a blank email to the following address: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [JAWS-Users] Feedback on free spellcheckers
If she has word 2007 then she already has a spell checker. I personally have not ever used a free spellchecker so I am asking for the advice of you fellow listers on which would be a good spellchecker for her to download. She is running XP, Word 2007, Jaws 9.0.2169, and Outlook Express. Your opinions, advice, and direction will be greatly and deeply appreciated. Thank you all very much. Re: [JAWS-Users] I have a new laptop
Hi: My husband who is sighted and very computer savy also had a lot of problems with Vista on a brand new Del computer. Maybe Del needs to make sure their systems are truly Vista compatible. Imho, I would drop Vista like a hot potato, and go back to XP. -- From: Andrew Head [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, July 24, 2008 4:20 AM To: Jaws users list JAWS-Users-List@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] I have a new laptop Hi all, A few weeks ago, I was given a new laptop for my birthday. I feel very lost on the computer at the moment. also, for some strange reason, the keystroke alt F4 doesn't always work, which is obviously really annoying! especially when I have to shut down the computer quickly before I loose speech at the end of the demo time with jaws. any help and information people can provide will be greatly appreciated. you can write to me off list to save traffic if you prefer. to write to me off list, send email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] kind regards, from Andrew Visit the JAWS Users List home page at: http://www.jaws-users.com Visit the Blind Computing home page at: http://www.blind-computing.com Address for the list archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com To post to this group, send email to jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help from Mailman with your account Put the word help in the subject or body of a blank message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Use the following form in order to contact the management team http://www.jaws-users.com/managers.php If you wish to join the Blind Computing list send a blank email to the following address: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Visit the JAWS Users List home page at: http://www.jaws-users.com Visit the Blind Computing home page at: http://www.blind-computing.com Address for the list archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com To post to this group, send email to jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help from Mailman with your account Put the word help in the subject or body of a blank message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Use the following form in order to contact the management team http://www.jaws-users.com/managers.php If you wish to join the Blind Computing list send a blank email to the following address: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Visit the JAWS Users List home page at: http://www.jaws-users.com Visit the Blind Computing home page at: http://www.blind-computing.com Address for the list archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com To post to this group, send email to jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help from Mailman with your account Put the word help in the subject or body of a blank message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Use the following form in
Re: [JAWS-Users] I have a new laptop
Andrew, I am running an XP still, but as soon as vista came out I had 2 extra machines running vista, the Vaio I had not many issues with 2007 office. However with the HP I had some, but I was using jaws 8. of course I know jaws 9 already took care of some of those problems. Now my sighted friends who bought dell are having an really bad time with it. I don't mean to talk bad about a brand, but I think they are struggling with vista. I also run office 2003 and 2007 in my xp vaio machine because it depends what I want it it for. I think it might be a personal choice at least on the office issue.
