Please explain about the specific menus for each DVD, I don't quite
understand. Isn't there some underlying program that creates or presents
them?

Many thanks! Vicky

Hello Victoria.
Good luck in your effort in trying to contact your cable company, to tell
them about this technology regarding accessability too on screen menus.
Unfortunately, I have tried for many years either through letters and
phone calls, to talk too them about this problem that we as blind people
have, and have met with more resistants then I care too tell you about.
Even our local chapter of the a c b here in New your city, wrote them a
letter asking them if they could send a representative from the company,
too discuss this on going problem, and as yet, we never hurd from them at
all. I even took it upon myself at one point, too write a letter, as well
as making a few phone calls, and have had no success for my efforts. This
is what happens, when companies put profit, before customers concerns, and
feel that they are so large, that they don't have too account too anyone

Hello Larry,

I'm using the same versions of operating systems and programs than you
and have been using nod32 now for almost three years, without a problem
and apparent good results.

It's not free however, but you don't have to re-install anything when
buying upgrades for a further year or two years.

If memory serves, I think you only have to replace the new code and
password.

However, I did not personally install the program initially and cannot
comment on the accessibility of that process.

Nod32 is also the virus scanning program FS recommends for use with
Openbook and Jaws and it also doesn't interfere with Kurzweil 1000.

It's said to be more reliable than AVG and is less draining on memory
resources than Norden.

Riana

Well, I have the direct tv dvr and dvr remote and it is on of the green
buttons just bellow the arrow buttons with the round thing in the middle. I
believe when you go down from that round part that there is a like kind of
semi-circle thing that has like four or five buttons and it is the third
button from the left. I believe.
And if there is not any description, it will make a sound and if there is
other description like spanish or another language it will play in that
language. You just keep hitting that button to scroll through.
I don't know why my locals aren't described. I contacted dvs and they said
it has to do with how the direct tv locals are going through the sattilite
or something. tnt has law and order (not svu or anything just law and
order) described and tcm has a lot of movies discribed.
Also you can set your dvr to record from a computer and press the buttons at
te bottom of the round arrow thing that is like rectangle and then the slect
button in the middle of the arrows and then play or use the arrows to
scrooll through the stuf on er dvr. Then to del you go back one arrow, the
key on the left, and press the little button underneath the arrow kind of on
the right side. This stuff is kinda hard to explain. It helps if you can
have a sighted person show you the buttons onee, and then you can learn
them.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Talking Digital TV

2009-09-08 Thread Soner Çoban

Victoria,
Let me tell some details you and those who are curious about this topic: as
equipment, we need one or more than one dishes as you like on the roof
correctly installed by the satellite man directed to the correct satellite
you wanna receive the broadcasts from. as second, we need a digital tv card
which is able to receive dvb; digital video broadcasting. as software to
watch, there are many options like DVB Viewer, ProgDvb, DvbDream and etc. I
use ProgDvb, because it is almost fully compatible with Jaws for windows,
though it is not the best among the viewers listed above. What can you do
with this software and with the equipment i listed before? you can watch
through your pc, you can turn your pc into a tv, you can navigate among the
satelites if more than one with route Jaws to pc thanks to the clean
interface of the software. It is very quick, so dont worry about the speed
of navigation. after choosing the sat you will watch, all the wrest is done
through normal pc cursor. The greatest challenge is the ability to use
remote control, yet remote control itself is not that usable for visually
impaired tv users. If you got a wireless keyboard, you will use your digital
tv card with remote control speed already, so dont worry about it. you can
volume up and down by assigning keystrokes within the programme, you can
mute or unmute, record your favourite show, with one keystroke, you can
switch among the diffrent languages that tv channels offer, such as
choosing the serial Lost in its original language or in the dubbed
language if available. Since there is a huge community on internet using
digital tv cards, tv channels periodically gets updated, so you do not need
to be worried to lose your channels if their transponders change. After you
complete the physical conditions/equipments, I am here willing to help you
on the software part, this could be either through Skype sessions, or
through another way. But i can tell you that there is much to discover and
taste here. I have cable tv at home, yet i just use it for internet, for tv
i use digital tv card.

Good morning everyone.

Someone sent me the following articlefor me to

Re: [JAWS-Users] Talking Digital TV

2009-09-08 Thread Donald Marang
I have had DirecTV since 1995. This spring I had pushed them so long about
Described Video Service that they provided me a free upgrade to their
Internet connected DVR. It has a lot of great features and much of its
operation is completely accessible! Scheduling recordings or On Demand
downloads from the Internet is fantastic! Of course, remote functions like
pausing, fast forward over commercials, and switching to DVS are completely
accessible as well. Unfortunately, there are a few key areas that are not!
The biggest failure is selecting a recorded show to watch from My
Playlist. Anything beyond watching the last recorded show can be
difficult. The same good / bad story with Described Video Service (DVS)!
The FCC started a working group this summer to resolve technical issues with
DVS after the conversion to digital. DirecTV has a representative at these
meetings, Robert Gabrielli. These meetings are open on the web to the
public. DirecTV seems to be holding back and I don't buy their technical
arguments for not providing transmission of all shows which have DVS
available! Let DirecTV and your cable providers that you are interested.

I have some information on these topics on a crude website. I have not
updated it lately or my JAWS Scripts associated with DirecTV. The Word
document I wrote to describe the functions and placement of the buttons
should be very helpful! I will try to update these pages in the next few
days.

It helps if you can
have a sighted person show you the buttons onee, and then you can learn
them.

Hi Larry,

I'm honestly not the best person to answer your question reliably.

I presume the settings for this can perhaps be changed in the
customised

installation, but on both my relevant computers, there appear options
via the applications menu, to scan, and/or scan and clean, selected
existing files or folders, with nod32.

So the default is probably to scan and remove viruses only on new data
and only per request on existing files.

You will for instance not want a virus scan done on every page of a
document you yourself OCR, as it will delay the PROCESS MUCH and would
be unnecessary.

But I'm only a layman user, so you'd really be better advised to
ask the experts.

Riana

Hello Larry,

I'm using the same versions of operating systems and
programs than you and have been using nod32 now for almost
three years, without a problem and apparent good results.

It's not free however, but you don't have to re-install
anything when buying upgrades for a further year or two
years.

If memory serves, I think you only have to replace the new
code and password.

However, I did not personally install the program initially
and cannot comment on the accessibility of that process.

Nod32 is also the virus scanning program FS recommends for
use with Openbook and Jaws and it also doesn't interfere
with Kurzweil 1000.

It's said to be more reliable than AVG and is less draining
on memory resources than Norden.

Riana

Good luck in your effort in trying to contact your cable company, to tell

Unfortunately, I have tried for many years either through letters and
phone calls, to talk too them about this problem that we as blind people
have, and have met with more resistants then I care too tell you about.
Even our local chapter of the a c b here in New your city, wrote them a
letter asking them if they could send a representative from the company,
too discuss this on going problem, and as yet, we never hurd from them at
all. I even took it upon myself at one point, too write a letter, as
well as making a few phone calls, and have had no success for my efforts.
This is what happens, when companies put profit, before customers
concerns, and feel that they are so large, that they don't have too

operation is completely accessible!
The FCC started a working group this summer to resolve technical issues
with DVS after the conversion to digital. DirecTV has a representative at
these meetings, Robert Gabrielli. These meetings are open on the web to
the public. DirecTV seems to be holding back and I don't buy their
technical arguments for not providing transmission of all shows which have
DVS available! Let DirecTV and your cable providers that you are
interested.

I have some information on these topics on a crude website. I have not
updated it lately or my JAWS Scripts associated with DirecTV. The Word
document I wrote to describe the functions and placement of the buttons
should be very helpful! I will try to update these pages in the next few
days.

Also you can set your dvr to record from a computer and press the buttons
at
te bottom of the round arrow thing that is like rectangle and then the
slect

button in the middle of the arrows and then play or use the arrows to
scrooll through the stuf on er dvr. Then to del you go back one arrow, the
key on the left, and press the little button underneath the arrow kind of
on

the right side. This stuff is kinda hard to explain. It helps if you can
have a sighted person show you the buttons onee, and then you can learn
them.

All,

We have just gone live with the first update to the public beta version
of JAWS 11. You can get this update two ways.

1. Use your check for update feature in the Help Menu of JAWS 11 Public
Beta version.
2. Go to the Download link for JAWS 11.0..536 and download the full
build to your machine and install it.

Note, you can install it right over top of the first one or you can
install it on a machine without having ever installed the first public
beta. Makes no difference.

The full list of enhancements will be posted to the What's New page on
September 9th. Below is the changes to the Research It feature which
we hope you will all look at and try out with the new build.

Regards,
Eric Damery
Freedom Scientific

Research It
Note: For a demonstration of Research It, listen to the August 2009
FSCast.

Features such as Web Slices in Internet Explorer 8 and gadgets saved in
your Windows Sidebar are intended to make it easy for you to quickly
obtain information. This material is presented in a format that is quick
to scan visually. However, when using assistive technology tools, there
is often extra information presented that is easier to ignore visually
than when listening or reading with braille.

Research It is a new feature that provides quick access to information
while also making it easy to return to your primary task. Use just a few
keystrokes to look up information and display salient data in the
Virtual Viewer. When you have finished researching, press another
keystroke to return to the task you were performing before the research
started. All that is required to use Research It is an Internet
connection.

There are multiple ways to launch and use Research It. By default,
Wiktionary is the primary look up source. This means that while the
cursor is on a word in a document or Web page, you can press the default
keystroke, INSERT+WINDOWS Key+R, to quickly lookup the Wiktionary
description for that word. You can always change the primary lookup
source at any time using the JAWS Configuration Manager, which lets you
select which lookup source to use as the JAWS default or as the default
for individual applications. As you become more familiar with Research
It, and as more lookup modules are created and made available to you,
you will want to change the default look up source used by JAWS, or just
use a different look up source on the fly.

The most efficient way to search for a term is to use the new layered
keystroke, INSERT+SPACEBAR, R. By pressing and releasing
INSERT+SPACEBAR, and then pressing R, you can open the Research It edit
field to type a word or expression of interest. This can be a zip code,
or city and state, or city and country that can be used with the Weather
look up tool to read a forecast, or a date that is used to view baseball
or football schedules and scores, or a word to use with the Wikipedia
search query to view its meaning or description. After viewing these
results, press ESC to close the Virtual Viewer window and return to your
original focus point.

If you are a software developer or script developer, you can create and
customize your own lookup module DLL and tailor it to your
organization's needs. For example, if your company specializes in
medical equipment, you can create a lookup source that is essentially a
glossary of medical and industry terms. A developer's guide that
outlines formatting for rule sets and debugging techniques is available
at Research It Developer's Guide.

The next section provides examples of how to use Research It. If you
need more information, refer to the Research It topic in the JAWS help
file.

Research It Examples
The following shows how you can use the Weather, Wikipedia, NFL Scores,
and Reuters Top News Stories search options in Research It to look up
specific information.

Use the Weather lookup source to receive the current weather forecast
for any location based on city name, airport code, or zip code. The
following example uses the INSERT+SPACEBAR, R keystroke.

Press INSERT+SPACEBAR, R to open the Research It edit field.
In the edit field, type your current location, for example, St.
Petersburg, Florida, or your local airport code, for example, TPA, or
your local zip code, for example, 33771, and then press ENTER.

The Research It dialog box opens with a list of available resource
items. The primary search item always appears first in the list.
Use the UP and DOWN ARROWS or first letter navigation to select Weather
and then press ENTER.
After a few seconds, the Virtual Viewer window opens and displays the
weather forecast for the entered location. After reading the
information,

[JAWS-Users] JAWS 11 beta 2, outlook 2007 and auto preview.

2009-09-08 Thread Jimmy.
Is anybody using outlook 2007 and the auto preview feature to preview the
first 2 or 3 lines of an email? I use this all the time because of lot's of
list traffic. It would not work for me in the first beta, and still don't
work in the second beta. I have submitted a report for the first beta, and
just completed one for the second. I'm wondering if anybody else is using
this feature and if it works for them. This is the first time I've ever had
problems with a beta, so I guess it's my turn for problems. Grin.

 Dear List

A Jaws User using a 64 bit Vista machine running Jaws 10 made a query to
 me
 today.
She has an annoying problem whereby her num lock key is always set to on
 when her computer boots up.
She has been told that there is a Jaws setting which can resolve this, but

 I
am not aware of any such solution. That is unless there is a way of using
the keyboard manager that I am not aware of.

As far as I am aware to change the status of the num lock key at start up
you have to either edit the registry or bios. I am particularly ignorant
 of
Vista so there may be a setting there also that I am not aware of.

 Any help greatly appreciated.

field to type a word or expression of interest. This can be a zip code,
or city and state, or city and country that can be used with the Weather
look up tool to read a forecast, or a date that is used to view baseball
or football schedules and scores, or a word to use with the Wikipedia

If you are a software developer or script developer, you can create and
customize your own lookup module DLL and tailor it to your
organization's needs. For example, if your company specializes in
medical equipment, you can create a lookup source that is essentially a
glossary of medical and industry terms. A developer's guide that
outlines formatting for rule sets and debugging techniques is available

The next section provides examples of how to use Research It. If you

The Research It dialog box opens with a list of available resource

2009-09-08 Thread Michael Hansen
Hello everyone,

Has anyone noticed when using Outlook 2007 that JAWS does not announce blank
lines? Sometimes, at least for me, JAWS sometimes says nothing at all when
on blank lines.

I am having another problem with Outlook where JAWS isn't reading by word
when composing a message, but I want to make sure that isn't because the
compose messages in Microsoft Word option is checked.

Thanks,

Michael

Subject: [JAWS-Users] CapsLock showing off when it is on

Hi
I am using a laptop computer and Vista home addition. I am running
JAWS 10. For some reason for no apparent reason the caps lock appears to
be on and when I press the shift key to capitalize a letter I get a
warning beep that signals that the letter I typed is a non-cap letter.
When I try to turn caps lock off it says that I turned it on. However,
the warning beep for non-cap letters goes away. What is happening and how
do I fix it?

Thanks.

God bless

[JAWS-Users] jaws 11 and combo boxes

2009-09-08 Thread David Ferrin
I often have to access those things and the particular combo box that it
doesn't work with my wife tells me that it is different in that there is no
scroll bar. I can left click on it to open things as needed. It does work fine
with combo boxes that do have a scroll bar. I have no idea what any of that
means since I can't see it at all but there it is folks. Does anybody else
experience such things? Since I have never experienced that before this is all
new to me to say the least and I've been using these particular combo boxes for
over 2 years already.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Turning on BCC in Outlook 2003 and 2007

2009-09-08 Thread Jimmy.
In 2007 hit the alt key then arrow over to options. Now down arrow and then
right arrow until you hear fields, show bcc and hit enter. Now your bcc
field should show.

In 2003 I think you do an alt v then arrow to headers, right arrow and arrow
down to show all and hit enter. The last is from memory, so it might not be
exactly correct.

Hi

I would like to know how to turn BCC on in Microsoft Outlook. This is for
two different Microsoft Outlook programs, each being operated with
different
versions of JAWS. One is Outlook 2003 with JAWS 8.0 and the other is
Outlook

2007 with JAWS 10.

Thanks

Regards

Jane

I will try to update these pages in the next few
days.

It helps if you can
have a sighted person show you the buttons onee, and then you can learn
them.
