Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and braille
That's how it's supposed to work. Speech rate is normally much faster than the braille reading rate. There is a checkbox, Typing Interrupt (in config manager, set options, User Options) which is checked by default that could be unchecked, I suppose, if you really must - Original Message - From: Ming chungchim...@yahoo.com.hk To: jaws jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Wednesday, July 21, 2010 7:11 AM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and braille hey i'm using Pac Mate braille display with Jaws. [JAWS-Users] How to do a repair of JAWS
Hello all, How does one go about doing a repair of JAWS? I put my JAWS cd into my computer and it did not give me the option to repair, just to install the program. Thanks in advance, Greg Wocher For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
Re: [JAWS-Users] How to do a repair of JAWS
Greg, To do a repair: 1. use the Windows run command and tab to the Browse button. 2. Navigate to where you have a full download of the Jaws file saved. 3. Go to the open combobox and hit the end key, then type /type repair and press enter. This puts the /type repair switch after the Jaws executable file. Hth, Take my advice, I don't use it anyway. Re: [JAWS-Users] How to do a repair of JAWS
Hi Greg; Below are 2 ways to do a repair of Jaws. Keep in mind the Jaws version shown in the example may be different than yours. The steps below are the best, most in depth, and most thorough way of repairing Jaws according to Freedom Scientific Tech Support. 1. Place a copy of the Jaws executible version that you want to repair into the main root of the C drive. For example; If you are running Jaws11 most recent you would paste a copy of J11.0.1430-32bit.exe into the main root of the C drive. To open the main root of the C drive, go to the desktop, press enter on My Computer, press enter on Local disk C, and now you have the main root of the C drive open. 2. With the Jaws .exe pasted into the C drive, highlight the .exe , and press F2 as if you were going to edit this line of text. now press control + C to copy this Jaws executible, press escape to close the edit field, and press Alt + F4 to close the C drive. What you want to do is place just the title of the Jaws version into the Windows Run Dialogue box and not the file. If you were to place the Jaws executible into the Run box without copying as you did as per the instructions above you would have pasted the whole file into the Run Box instead of just the title. 3. Now that you have just the title copied to the clipboard, press Windows key + R to open the Run Dialogue Box. Type C:\ , remember to use a capital C, without the quotes or spaces and press control + V to paste the Jaws title, press your end key to take the cursor to the end of the title and type in the following /type repair without the quotes but, with the spaces . Below is what your line of text should look / read like. C:\J11.0.1447-32bit.exe /type repair Read character by character to make sure you have put in the proper spaces, Forward back slashes and text. press the home key to go to the front of the title and press enter to start the repair. A 2nd way to do the same thing. From: Brian Lee Hello Jim, You might have already resolved the problem, but if not here is a link that you can use to download the newest update for your 64-bit installation of JAWS. Information about performing the repair is shown below after the download link. ftp://ftp.freedomscientific.com/users/hj/private/WebFiles/JAWS/J11.0.1430-64 bit.exe After downloading the file you can do the following steps to repair the installation: 1. Greg, You need to browse to the file name using your run command. Or, as Mike state, you can just copy the name of the file using the rename f2 command. You don't put an a there, you put a forward slash followed immediately by the word type, then a space, then the word repair. Re: [JAWS-Users] Does anyone know of a shareware program to Backup a external drive?
Hi. The best program i've found is Sync Toy made by microsoft. it has 3 backup modes, echo, syncranise and Contribute. Its freeware. the functions it offers are as follows: Synchronize The synchronize action will make two folders mirror each other, keeping the latest changes made to the files in either folder. New and updated files are copied both ways. Renames and deletes on either side are repeated on the other. Folder Creates, folder deletes and folder updates are also propagated both ways. For example, you have two computers. You keep a copy of pictures, documents, and/or tunes on both. Changes often occur on both computers. You want SyncToy to notice additions, deletions, changes, and renames on both computers, and then do the right thing to bring the folders back in sync. Synchronize is the SyncToy action to use. list of 5 items . Every file in the left folder that is new or changed is copied to the right folder. . Every file in the left folder that has been renamed is renamed in the right folder. . Every file that was deleted from the left folder is deleted in the right folder. . Note: SyncToy does not actually delete any files by default. It merely moves the files to the Recycle Bin. To change this behavior, uncheck the Save overwritten files in the Recycle Bin option in the folder pair option window. . The process is repeated for files in the right folder. list end Echo The echo action will make copies of files that are new and changed on the left to the right. New and updated files are copied left to right. Renames and deletes on the left are repeated on the right. Folder creates, folder deletes and folder updates on the left are repeated on the right. For example, when you travel, you take a copy of your pictures, tunes, and documents to work on. When you return, you want SyncToy to notice the files you added, changed, deleted, and renamed in the left folder, and you want SyncToy to recreate those additions, changes, deletions, and renames in the right folder. Echo is very similar to Synchronize, except Echo works only left to right. Echo is the SyncToy action to use. list of 7 items . To change this behavior, uncheck the Save overwritten files in the Recycle Bin option in the folder pair option window. . No left folder files are deleted, or renamed. . No files are copied from right to left. . Right folder files are deleted. list end Contribute Contribute will add changes from the left folder to the right folder. New and updated files are copied left to right. Renames on the left are repeated on the right. No deletions. Folder creates and folder updates on the left are repeated on the right For example, you have a compact flash, SD, USB thumb drive, or other removable media that you take with you when you travel. You probably delete some files on the removable drive while you are away so that you can add or change other files. When you get back, you only want SyncToy to recognize new, renamed, and changed files, and you want the new stuff copied to the right folder. Contribute is the same as Echo but without the deletes. Contribute is the SyncToy action to use. list of 4 items . New and updated files from the left folder are copied to the right folder. . Files renamed in the left folder are renamed in the right folder. . No files are deleted. . No files are copied from right to left. list end You can download this here either for 32bit or 64bit: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=c26efa36-98e0-4ee9-a7c5-98d0592d8c52displaylang=en Let us know how you get on and if you find it to be ok! Hi Scott, http://www.blind-computing.com/file_utilities/pages/karen's_replicator.html You didn't say which version of Windows you are using, but this works from Win95 thru XP, I haven't tried it on Vista or Win7 yet. It is completely free and accessible with Jaws. I've been using it for about 9 years with no problems. Re: [JAWS-Users] Does anyone know of a shareware program to Backupaexternal drive?
I can vouch that Karen's Replicator works equally well in Vista and Windows 7. I have used it for years to make a copy of all my data folders to another computer in the house. When I was writing JAWS scripts, I would also make a copy of the JAWS user folder and place it in my Documents folder. That saved me several times. I also started using tags so it can automatically keep an archive of my Finance folder, so that I can go back to a particular month and year and get a copy of my files as they were on the end of that month. Additionally, my daughter used to use the Open Source gimp editor and a few times lost whole projects due to strange crashes. I set up Karen's Replicator to backup and archive her drawing folder so it would make a copy every 15 minutes and allow you to go back in the archives to a particular day and hour in the last month. Surprisingly, the software never crashed after that, preventing her from turning in her Art assignments! I guess I need to set up a similar backup for her on her new Mac Pro at College. It is a very easy, yet powerful tool that quietly works in the background and never impacts performance. [JAWS-Users] Taskbar removing things from it
Hi All; I was playing around in the customize option of Taskbar Start Menu properties. As I was down arrowing through the choices I noticed that several had multiple entries. How do I remove the extra entries so that, Super Anti Spyware for example, is only in there 1 time? I am running XPSP3 Home Jaws10 latest . All help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks much. [JAWS-Users] Winzip V14.5 and JAWS
I received an offer to purchase version 14.5 of Winzip. Currently I use Winzip V9.0. JAWS works well with V9.0, using the JAWS cursor for some features. I have a notion from a statement in the offer that the user interface might be somewhat like the new Office ribbon concept. If the interface is similar to the Office ribbon concept, this change would not be a show stopper for me. Any first hand shared experience with version 14.5 of Winzip and JAWS version 11 would be appreciated. [JAWS-Users] research it feature
I have Jaws 11 (the latest version), am using Windows Vista. . Whenever I research a business, it usually works. That is up until a couple of days ago. Is something wrong with the Business end of Research It Feature? I usually use this instead of a phonebook. It's kind of hard when the phone book (business feature) doesn't work. . If anyone can help get this back up and running, that would be great. A merry heart does good like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones. Re: [JAWS-Users] Winzip V14.5 and JAWS
Hello Gary, Short of WinZip handling more file types then it's previous versions, there is absolutely no change to the program, other then setting the wizard to come up all the time, if you choose that mode, but again, this is optional. There is also a ultimate super compression setting you can use with WinZip 14, however, if you're going to share archives zipped up in this super zip format, make sure the people you are sharing your zip file with have version 12 or higher, because older version don't recognize this super compression file it creates. Personally, I always use legacy compression, as this is the most compatible with most, if not all archiving programs out there. Just a warning. As I said before, this version is much more versatile than it's previous versions, especially since it can handle RAR files, and ISO files, and other Disc image files. I am using it myself, and I think it's great. I do use both WinZip, and WinRAR, for those pesky stubborn archives that give me problems, but I find that the two compliment each other, rather than interfere with each other. In any case, I think it's a great program, and well worth the investment. Scorpio For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Thank you very much for the feedback about Winzip version 14.5. Is WinRAR useful for file types that Winzip doesn't handle? It's late; otherwise, I would google WinRAR.
