[JAWS-Users] Tradeoffs with Abby FineReader from Kurzweil 1000
Hello list, I have Kurzweil 1000 and am considering switching to Abby FineReader for my desktop OCR needs. Ive never really got use to the K1000 commands or interface and a lot of the extras that K1000 offers simply arent of interest to me. Included calculator, calendar, database look up, etc. Like everyone else on these lists I imagine, my main interest is OCR accuracy which from my understanding shouldnt be a problem since K1000 and OpenBook use the FineReader OCR engine anyway. As a Jaws user, I am also interested to know of any possible issues or drawbacks/compromises one might encounter when using Abby FineReader as opposed to K1000. Between my iPhone with a ScanStand and the Jaws OCR feature I find myself using or needing a standalone desktop solution less and less, but for those times I do need one or wish to use for more involved scans, Id like to be able to use something where I dont have to remember a completely different set of other commands and settings like in K1000. I am using JFW 18 on both Windows 10 and 7 computers. Any feedback would be appreciated. Re: [JAWS-Users] Malwarebytes 3.0 & Navigating With Jaws
Hi GS, I would recommend that you use MWB 2.2.1. It is much more accessible than 3.0. At least with 2.2.1 you could get definite answers versus maybes. You can check out the various versions from the website below: www.malwarebytes.org Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] Create desktop shortcut with Firefox
May have to just do it the old-fashioned way: Move to the Address Bar with Alt + D or F6 and press Control + C to copy the address to the clipboard. Press Windows + M to minimize all apps and go to the Desktop. Press Control + Space to deselect the selected item. Press the Context menu key (Shift + F10) to get the context menu. Choose New/Shortcut and paste the URI, press Next, and give it a meaningful name. Press Finish. Maybe there is an easier way from Firefox but if so I haven't taken the time to figure it out. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Jim Pursley Sent: Saturday, December 31, 2016 8:48 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Create desktop shortcut with Firefox How do I create a desktop shortcut for a web site with Firefox v50? Re: [JAWS-Users] Malwarebytes 3.0 & Navigating With Jaws
You are probably right. Although I started using JAWS at version 15, I didn't discover the touch cursor until version 17. I had to learn JAWS on my own because the only available training wasn't a structured course. The instructor simply asked you what you wanted to learn. I am guessing he was too lazy to develop a properly structured course. I found out later that nobody attends his class longer than one session. I could go on about the disaster that the local rehabilitation center is, but I won't bore you. Cheers! On 1/1/2017 3:49 PM, Subash wrote: Happy New Year Gene. Re: [JAWS-Users] gold wave recordings
Converting mono to stereo was a trick often done in the early 1960's. Here's a quick n' dirty method. 1. Always make a safety copy of the sound file. Mark it clearly as an archive, or "safety dub." 2. With the sound open in Goldwave, create a new sound (CTRL+N) and specify a stereo soundfile. 3. Copy the original sound to the clipboard. 4. In the new sound you just created, use the combination Ctrl+shift+R to select the right channel. 5. Mix the mono file into the blank right channel of your new sound. 6. Repeat the process with the laft channel of the new sound, mut set the start point for mixing the mono track into the stereo sound at about 0.02 seconds. This slight delay will give an illusion of a stereo sound. You can also then use Stereo Reverb under the Effects, Echo menu to add some depth. Inverting one of the two channels in the new sound can also add to the illusion. Good luck.. Let me know how it works for you. It can be caused by several factors and so I'm going to recommend that you try a few things to isolate the issue and eliminate other causes of that distortion. 1. To make sure that the distortion isn't being caused by your computer's sound card, plug in a set of headphones and then try experimenting with the volume. If you have a digital recorder such as Olympus, try transferring the file to the recorder. Then play it on there. If the wave distortion doesn't continue, then it's your sound card or amplifier. There are many features available in Gold Wave which can change the way a sound is heard by passing it through various filters. First, make a copy of the file. Then, try filtering the sound using the Gold Wave features. Finally, a distortion like that might be a part of the original recording but isn't as noticeable at lower volumes. It is a given fact that when you add more power to an output, you add more headroom giving the signal a chance to distort. Good luck. Hi Mike! A correction to my email about accessing the touch cursor, you don't need the JAWS key. So to enter the touch cursor, just press shift plus the num pad + key. To fill in fields, browse to the field you want to fill, then press space to give it the focus, then exit the touch cursor, fill in the field, then reenter the touch cursor to continue navigating the program. Not sure if this same technique will work for other controls like spin boxes or drop down lists. Good luck! Re: [JAWS-Users] Malwarebytes 3.0 & Navigating With Jaws
Hi Gene, No I have not, damn didn't even think about it! LOL Anyways, I've already uninstalled & went back to MWB 2.2, but will using the Touch Cursor allow me to fill in the necessary edit fields to schedule scans & access all settings checkboxes? Thanks for the reminder & your input. A very happy New Year to all! Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] Malwarebytes 3.0 & Navigating With Jaws
Hi Dacia, Here are some notes I've collected: Original Message From: Londa Peterson I have found that I can navigate malwarebytes with the touch cursor. This even works in Windows 7. In fact, I find that the touch cursor works better than the JAWS cursor most of the time these days. Sometimes I think I even get access to more content than I ever did with the JAWS cursor. Give it a try. Londa From: Maria Campbell Touch cursor in Windows 7? Where to find it? How to access it? Sunny Day Maria Campbell From: Londa Peterson Press shift with the PC cursor command. Press the PC cursor twice to turn it off. The gestures won't work in Windows 7 of course, but the keyboard commands will. If you go into JAWS help and search for touch cursor, you should find a list of the keyboard commands. If you can't find it, I'll post a copy if necessary. Londa From: Dave Carlson Shift+NumPad Enter will activate touch cursor. Pressing NumPad Enter twice quickly will return to PC cursor. Haven't experimented yet with it, but it does come up in Windows 7. Dave Carlson From: Dave Carlson Oops. Should have been NumPad Plus, not NumPad Enter. Sorry. Dave Carlson From: Dave Carlson Here's more information, cut from the JAWS Keyboard Help pages: Using the Touch Cursor Certain applications, especially many of the modern-style apps found in Windows 8, do not always work as expected with JAWS when navigating with the standard cursors such as the PC and Virtual PC cursors. Activating the new Touch Cursor enables you to use the ARROW keys on your computer's keyboard, or the controls on your braille display, to navigate through the actual objects in an application similar to using gestures on the touch screen of a tablet. Application objects include everything from menu bars, toolbars, and progress bars, to form controls, regions, links, etc. Press SHIFT+NUM PAD PLUS, or SHIFT+CAPS LOCK+SEMICOLON if using the laptop keyboard layout, to activate the Touch Cursor. To turn it off, activate one of the other cursors, like the JAWS or PC Cursor. Pressing the PC Cursor command (NUM PAD PLUS) will cause JAWS to say "Touch Cursor" and the Touch Cursor will remain active. If Tutor Messages are enabled, JAWS will also speak the message "Double tap to activate PC cursor". Press the PC Cursor command twice quickly to turn off the Touch Cursor and activate the PC Cursor. The Touch Cursor is enabled by default in certain Windows 8 applications to improve navigation. These apps include News, Weather, and Store. Whenever you move focus to one of these apps, the Touch Cursor is automatically activated. To automatically enable the Touch Cursor in another application, press INSERT+V to open Quick Settings while focused in the application where you want to use the Touch Cursor, expand the Touch Cursor Options group, and then select Automatic Activation. You must do this for every application where you want to have JAWS automatically turn on the Touch Cursor. Navigating With the Touch Cursor To move to the next or previous object on the screen, press RIGHT or LEFT ARROW. You can also use TAB or SHIFT+TAB. To move by a specific object type, press UP or DOWN ARROW. By default, the UP and DOWN ARROWS will move by regions, or by groups if you are on the Windows 8 Start Screen. To change what object type these commands move by, press PAGE UP or PAGE DOWN to cycle through the available types using the navigation rotor. For example, if you want the UP or DOWN ARROW keys to move by headings, press PAGE UP or PAGE DOWN until you hear "headings. Now, pressing UP or DOWN ARROW will move to the next or previous heading. Press CTRL+HOME to move to the first object and press CTRL+END to move to the last object. To announce the current object, press INSERT+UP ARROW. To perform a Say All, which will cause the Touch Cursor to move through the application and speak each object, press INSERT+DOWN ARROW. As you navigate using the ARROW keys, the system focus does not follow the Touch Cursor. This allows you to freely navigate through objects without changing the position of the PC Cursor or mouse pointer. Pressing SPACEBAR or ENTER on the current object will move focus to that object and perform the appropriate action. For instance, opening a menu, selecting a check box, or activating a button or link. In addition, a rectangle will be displayed around the currently selected object to visually indicate the location of the Touch cursor for sighted users. To quickly move the Touch Cursor to the object that currently has focus, press INSERT+NUM PAD PLUS, or CAPS LOCK+APOSTROPHE if using the laptop keyboard layout. JAWS will route the Touch Cursor to the currently selected object and announce it. The Touch Cursor will remain active after performing this command. To determine what object types will be announced as you navigate with the Touch Cursor, press INSERT+V to open Quick Settings, expand the Touch Cursor Options group, then move to Configure Types. Tab to the save button & press enter, or press, Alt + S. This will save a shortcut to the folder, or wherever your saved downloads go to by default. Now copy it or cut it from the downloads location, & paste it to your desktop. I'm not going to swear that the steps above will work every time because they sure as hell didn't for me! [JAWS-Users] List Guidelines Reminder
Hello and welcome to the JAWS Users list. This list has been created for The purpose of discussing all aspects of the JAWS for Windows screen reader Program. So everything that pertains to JAWS is fair game. Such as asking about what software packages work well with JAWS or how to make them work even better with scripts, keyboard short cuts and so forth. Another example could be requesting information on how to do something in Microsoft Word, which as we all know works very well with JAWS, but you need to know how to do a certain task or want to learn a way to accomplish it more efficiently. Now this is a very important point in my opinion, asking the list for exact instructions every time is not a good thing to do for a major reason. It creates a dependency situation even if you don't realize it does. The ideal place I am hoping the list will arrive at some day is that everybody no matter how new they might happen to be with JAWS or computers will have the confidence to try things on their own, and yet feel if they get stuck the list will be there to help put them back on track. Trust me when I say that help is quicker to arrive for somebody who is well known to ask for it last than first. So try it yourself first whatever it is. If you get stuck then let the list know what you've done to try and resolve your current dilemma. Then I'm sure help will arrive with in short order. Next a post asking if there is a software package that does a specific task and works well with JAWS is perfectly fine. The rules of conduct are quite simple and straightforward. Be polite and Patient with others. There will be absolutely no fighting, and no bashing of Freedom Scientific on here at all. If you have a problem with them then take it up with Freedom Scientific directly. Please try to keep subject lines relevant and descriptive as possible. Signatures and tag lines should not be more than a couple of sentences, three or four at the most. If you wish to include a tag line, don't make another message of it. Placing anything else in there simply increases the bandwidth required to handle the posted message and make it more work for a person who wishes to follow the given thread back to review previous messages, as they have to plow down past an overly long signature. Also please place your message above your signature line so as not to force people to read it before they get to your message. Also any newsletters except those that directly pertain to JAWS should not be posted to the list prior to receiving moderator approval. Attachments are removed before any message is sent to the list. This is done for your protection. The message list might state that there is an attachment but in fact Mailman does remove them. When contacting any of the list moderators privately please be descriptive in the subject line as to the purpose of the message. Many of us simply delete messages from people we don't know. At the present time there are over 650 subscribers to this list, so we can't possibly know everybody on here. Also, if you have a question for the list that falls within the guidelines, then post it accordingly. Don't contact the management team with questions that are more appropriate for the list itself. Your question may or may not receive an answer for a number of reasons. Everybody should familiarize themselves with the content contained in the footer message that accompanies every message posted to the list. Occasionally there might be some difficulty with your email address and you may receive an email from the server asking you to reactivate your account. Please do not simply delete this message. Instead open it and follow the directions to reactivate your account. If you do not after receiving a number of such messages then the server will remove your email address automatically. The discussion of anything illegal is absolutely forbidden, along with flirting or other such inappropriate activities. This is not a high tech swap shop or anything of that nature at all. This means that goods and or services will not be bought or sold using this forum. If you know a given subject is off topic then don't post it. Simply placing off topic in the subject line does not make it all right. Cross-posting is not permitted, and members should only post in the following manner: Using the TO: field with only one list address. The reason for this is that in cases where people setup their message rules to go by the to: field often times such rules get fouled up and in effect do not work properly. Also cross posting might allow you to reach many lists at the same time but the fact is such a post might not be on topic for each and every list. This practice does nothing but clutter up such lists with unwanted off topic messages along with annoying the list moderators. The SUBJECT: field should be short and to the point without including any member names. Please do not reply to a posted question simply to say you don't know
