Re: [JAWS-Users] Interruptibility
In my experience, pressing most other keys briefly interrupts speech, but only to restart it. Exceptions include the PC cursor key, the JAWS cursor key, the tab key and some others. I think only the control key gives you a surefire way of stopping speech. Re: [JAWS-Users] Downgrading to JAWS 16
I've still got JAWS version 9 running on this Windows XP machine, along with Microsoft Word 2003 and Outlook Express. I also have a Windows 7 laptop with JAWS 17 instaled. But sadly, on that computer, JAWS seems to get stuck and has to restart itself rather more frequently than I like. I can tell you, that makes for some very anxious moments when speech stops and will not restart. My advice is, do what you need to, in order for you to do your job. If a newer version would give you better productivity, by all means upgrade it if you can. In my case, if I want to use Windows 7, I have to use the later JAWS version. But after several attempts to fully upgrade, I only use that system as a backup. Conversely, if you find that a piece of software isn't helping you, and you're spending time trying to force it to perform its function, it's best to go to an earlier version or try another program. This is why I use the fine port someone made of Outlook Express to Windows 7. Why? because other email programs (and believe me, I've tried many) don't meet the requirements which OE has met for all these years. --- I am, therefore I think. Re: [JAWS-Users] win 10 desktop
Hey. You can now search for a programme or files merely by hitting the windows key and starting to type in the name of what you are looking for. Windows will attempt to autocomplete it for you. Just keep typing until you get the one you want, or use down arrow to find the next nearest match. Sometimes the Windows key will open Cortana instead. I haven't really discovered the pattern behind this, but anyway, if that happens, just hit esc and try again. Once you find what you want, if you want a desktop shortcut, you can use the "send to" item in the context menu to create one. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Lenny McHugh Sent: Saturday, May 27, 2017 6:20 PM To: JFW List Subject: [JAWS-Users] win 10 desktop I noticed that some icons are not on the desktop. there is none for eset anti virus and end it all that I installed the other day. windows f use to be able to search for a file or folder that I could create a desktop entry. how can I do this in win 10? thanks --- Please visit my web page It's motivational, inspirational with a touch of humor There is also a very extensive resource list for the blind http://www.LennyMcHugh.com International Brotherhood of Magicians member #43990 For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/ For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Yes, it is possible, at least using the Vocaliser voices. I'm not sure why you want to use the JAWS cursor though. Remember that the tab key does not move the JAWS cursor. You should be able to go into the voice adjustment dialogue box (jaws menu, options, voices, voice adjust) and tab to the volume slider from there. Easier not to use the JAWS cursor for this purpose. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Tom Fairhurst Sent: Friday, May 26, 2017 5:52 PM To: List Jaws Subject: [JAWS-Users] Voice Volume Is it possible to change the voice volume in JAWS 18? Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws 17 and ms security essentials
I've been using MS Security Essentials ever since I started using JAWS because it was the only free anti virus that didn't require me to jump through all kinds of hoops just to access it. Re: [JAWS-Users] More on antivirus
Malwarebytes is extremely useful and has saved my arse on a few occasions. But it is not really a virus scanner. It is an anti-malware programme which works best when run after you have had unwanted programmes (not necessarily viruses) installed on your system. No real need for the real-time scanner, which is annoying and invasive ... the free, on demand scan works well. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of wayne smith Sent: Friday, May 26, 2017 4:16 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] More on antivirus I was going over the PCMag.com reviews for -anti-virus programs and Bitdefender and Casperski have high ratings. Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws 17 and Eset Smart Security or Nod32
Hi I use Eset Smart Security. I find it to be somewhat accessable.I am assuming that Nod32 works like Eset Smart Security for antivirus However some changes need to be made to use them with JAWS. 1. Open Eset Smart Security or Nod32. 2. Pres f5 to open the advanced setup screen. 3. Arrow down or press the end key to User interface. 4. Press right arrow once and then down arrow to Graphics. 5 Tab to Graphical user interface 3 state button and press space bar to uncheck the button. 6. Tab to the OK button and press enter. Now the Advanced setup screen will be accessable. The main screen consists of a menu on the left side which is accessable and the choices for each menu item on the right side. The items on the right side of the screen are somewhat accessable. But I find that to successfully navigate and choose those items, I have to use the JAWS cursor. . Jarte uses the same classic menu structure as Wordpad, upon which it is based. You just press the Alt key to launch the menus, just as you would with any other program. To invoke the spell checker, just press F7. Hi Andy, I owe you a great and hardy "Thank you" for telling us about Jarte! It is just what I always wanted, a nice easy word processor that is fully compatible with JAWS. It was easy to download and install. Folks will find it to have a very familiar feel, and it is easy to explore the menus and find all the features, everything I want, a few nice extras, but not as much of the wild stuff the Microsoft Word program has. It also has a nice regular old menu system. So for those who did not notice his post, please consider Jarte. I can already tell that I will use it a lot, perhaps as my default word processor. It is certainly the solution for those who have only WordPad. A post-installation note. When you first launch the program for the purpose of real work, watch for the following. When you first go to open your file list, the old familiar control + o key, you need to set the file type. By default, it is set to RTF only, meaning that when you tab to the file list, you will see only the folders, and only those files that are in RTF format. Instead, tab to the file type field, and Arrow down to the format you want to see in the file list, or arrow down to the bottom, about 5 times, to the all-format view. Whatever format option you choose, just press enter. Then, just do the shift tab a couple of times and there is the list of all folders, and depending upon your file type selection discussed above, your list of files. If you do not do this step, you will see only the list of folders, if any, and only RTF files, if any, in the folder. I assume there is a way to set the default file type, but I have not learned that much yet, and for beginners of Jarte, it is probably best to just check the file type box each time, or you will be greatly confused wondering where your files and folders are! I put in below the link to the Jarte web page that contains the description of features. On that same page is also the
