Re: [JAWS-Users] FireFox Crash Reporter.
try deleteing your browseing history. and cookies. this too will erase passwords you saved. try loading firefox in safe mode. hold down the shift key then click on the firefox desktop icon. then run in safe mode. this will run with none of the add ons running. but will not erase anything. if you set it back to where it was first installed it will erase everything. bookmarks, saved passwords, browseing history, firefox colors etc. so do this as a last resort. -Original Message- From: Jared Rimer Sent: Sunday, June 04, 2017 9:23 PM To: JAWS-Users-List@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] FireFox Crash Reporter. Re: [JAWS-Users] Problem with character echo
I am using vocalizer Tom and have set it both from the settings manager for default and from using the insert _ 2 keys to cycle through the options. In doing some futher testing I find that if I set it to characters I get nothing when I type, if I set it to characters and words I do not get characters but do get words, and if I set it to words only I get the words when I hit space. It appears that only the character settings are not working for some reason, sounds kind of strange. Re: [JAWS-Users] antivirus question
Hello Steve, I want to get away from MSE because it doesn't seem to pick up anything, even if I don't download anything. Once it picked up a file as temp files and said it was something, but most of the time it says nothing. I'm on windows 7 64 bit, and was looking for something else. I've used Trend Micro's house call tool which does scanning and updating of its engine through the download, but it seems to be only doing one drive. MSE does my whole machine, but I was curious if there was something else out there besides MSE that would be more reliable. I haven't made any changes yet, someone said I aught to install it and see, but now i'm not sure. Its sad that nobody is accessible anymore, I do practice good web habits, have read up and listen to security podcasts, and I am careful, but with the threats today, something is always needed and was looking for something that would be a bit better than my experience lately with MSE. Thanks for your thoughts. On 6/4/2017 09:07, Steve wrote: Sophos isn't real accessible; you're best bet is to use Windows Defender a.k.a. Microsoft Security Essentials in earlier versions of Windows before Windows 10. Then, as a backup, use an off-line scanner to periodically run a double-check on your system along with practicing good web habits i.e. avoiding peer-to-peer sites, the dark web, and opening unknown email attachments or links. I use the Sophos Virus Removal tool, which is pretty accessible. You may need to use the Jaws Convenient OCR to update the scanning engine if you haven't used it in the past month, and you might have to also use that to initiate a scan. But, at least the results are viewable and since it isn't always running, you don't need to try to configure it to play nice with certain sites or programs. That's why I prefer Windows Defender. Back in 2013, when I was finally declared legally blind and had to switch from Zoom Text to JAWS, JAWS was at version 15. As I recall, other than having to learn it on my own because the Lighthouse here is a bad joke, there were few, if any problems I had with it, it just worked. JAWS 16 was pretty much the same but with the addition of the very useful command search function. Then came JAWS 17 with the apparent almost complete rewrite of the engine. From there it seemed like every time I turned around I was running into another misfunction of JAWS. Version 18, when it came out wasn't much better. So, after long thought, as well as fighting an apparently recalcitrant version of JAWS, I've finally decided to install version 16 to see how it compares to version 18. If it works as well as my memory of it recalls, I will eventually uninstall JAWS 18, and consider not maintaining my SMA anymore. Besides my dissatisfaction with versions 17 and 18, it seems like most of the enhancements are for Windows 10 and have no effect on my Windows 7 system which I have no plans to upgrade. If things do change for the better in the future, I can always reestablish a new SMA. I'm just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this idea or has already preceded me in downgrading back to version 16. Thanks! Later... Re: [JAWS-Users] antivirus question
Sophos isn't real accessible; you're best bet is to use Windows Defender a.k.a. A bit concerning. I did this, and found that microsoft security essentials leaves it. I got concerned when I knowingly saved a file as I wanted to see if it would pick up the file. I left it for awhile and saved it on one of my drives. I submitted it using I believe it was av test or a site that I found that allowed me to see what antivirus picked this particular file I had up. MSE never picked it up. Now that I'm a Jaws user, what antivirus besides MSE would work with Jaws? I've got Windows 7, 64 bit. I don't think MSE is doing the trick anymore if a file can go undetected for that long, and it never got flagged for review. It was a zip, with an executable in it, which i knew was dangerous, but I save them at times to see if the thing is working and picks them up. -- Jared Rimer This address is on mailing lists, please do not use it as a personal coorespondence. Re: [JAWS-Users] Google Chrome help, please.
Here are Google Chrome questions I have come up with so far. 1. When in an address bar, with Internet Explorer, I was able to press F6 to get back into the main page. How does one do this with Google Chrome? 2. I also have found that for instance on Amazon, that some checkboxes and combo boxes don't appear as such, and I cannot makeappropriate choices that I can see offered in internet explorer. 3. On Youtube, for instance, I could jump by headings or buttons, as the need arose, but don't seem to navigate as easily with Google Chrome. 4. On facebook, for instance, I do not find an events option when I want to check birthdays or other upcoming events. I could always see the link for that on my FB home page with Internet Explorer. The reason I would like to switch to Chrome is that I find it to work much faster. I have Internet Explorer 11, and it seems to get hung up with Jaws sometimes when trying to open a web site. I am using Jaws 18, I saw the same behavior in Jaws 17, and at times I would actually lose Jaws and would have to reload it. I'm sure I'll come up with more questions as they arise. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. Judy For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

[JAWS-Users] Junk folder-Jaws-users Group, Might want to check
I keep forgetting to post. I have seen no one mention. So, Might not be a big issue. Yet, here, 2016 Microsoft Outlook Office Complete and E-mail, using Jaws 18 latest. Sometimes David F., Sir, your group mail goes to my Junk folder, sometimes one or two and sometimes several. So, What I do is use the application key on each high-lighted e-mail, go down to Junk mail, thinking it is called and enter, this puts a list up and I go to not junk. Enter there and it will give me the Third screen of Jaws user.. This is checked as a safe group to receive from. I uncheck and then check a couple of times, making sure when unchecking it twice, it is checked. Then tab once more and again check and uncheck and check and then Ok and they disappear to the in-box. Then Outlook will remember for a while and like after a week of smooth running, Today two more popped up. So if anyone is not receiving mail from your group, this might be the issue. Re: [JAWS-Users] opening up an email
Hi I use the control home technique to get to the top of the email text. Why? IMHO, it is not totally in the reader's control to start at the top since the sender, based on how they end the email, has the control. If the sender just ends the email at the bottom, I have found that that position is what I inherit as the reader. If the sender ends the their email by going back to the top of it before sending it, then you start at the top. This logic works most of the time, but since the reader does not control the sender's client, it turns out to be a crap shoot, thus The control home behavior is constant and works to get you starting to read at the top of the email. My 2 cents.
