2017-06-04 Thread net bat66
try deleteing your browseing history. and cookies. this too will erase
passwords you saved.

try loading firefox in safe mode.
hold down the shift key then click on the firefox desktop icon.
then run in safe mode.
this will run with none of the add ons running. but will not erase anything.
if you set it back to where it was first installed it will erase everything.
bookmarks, saved passwords, browseing history, firefox colors etc.

so do this as a last resort.

Usually this happens with an extension or something with firefox itself.
I've been on youtube a little bit and no issues. I would try a reboot
to see if its a memory thing. Are you running the latest firefox, and
how many tabs are open? Could be a memory issue if there are a lot of
tabs open.

I am using vocalizer Tom and have set it both from the settings manager for
default and from using the insert _ 2 keys to cycle through the options. In
doing some futher testing I find that if I set it to characters I get
nothing when I type, if I set it to characters and words I do not get
characters but do get words, and if I set it to words only I get the words
when I hit space. It appears that only the character settings are not
working for some reason, sounds kind of strange.

Hi Danny,

I'm running Windows 7, Pro 64 bit, Jaws 16, & Vocalizer Tom high premium. I
just installed this vocalizer Tom voice this afternoon, & when changing the
typing echo using, Insert + 2, all typing echo options work as they are
supposed to in all applications.
Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

doing some futher testing I find that if I set it to characters I get
nothing when I type, if I set it to characters and words I do not get
characters but do get words, and if I set it to words only I get the words
when I hit space. It appears that only the character settings are not

Re: [JAWS-Users] antivirus question

2017-06-04 Thread Jared Rimer

Hello Steve,

I want to get away from MSE because it doesn't seem to pick up anything,
even if I don't download anything. Once it picked up a file as temp
files and said it was something, but most of the time it says nothing.
I'm on windows 7 64 bit, and was looking for something else. I've used
Trend Micro's house call tool which does scanning and updating of its
engine through the download, but it seems to be only doing one drive.
MSE does my whole machine, but I was curious if there was something else
out there besides MSE that would be more reliable. I haven't made any
changes yet, someone said I aught to install it and see, but now i'm not
sure. Its sad that nobody is accessible anymore, I do practice good web
habits, have read up and listen to security podcasts, and I am careful,
but with the threats today, something is always needed and was looking
for something that would be a bit better than my experience lately with
MSE. Thanks for your thoughts.

good web habits i.e. avoiding peer-to-peer sites, the dark web, and

I use the Sophos Virus Removal tool, which is pretty accessible. You
may need to use the Jaws Convenient OCR to update the scanning engine if
you haven't used it in the past month, and you might have to also use
that to initiate a scan. But, at least the results are viewable and
since it isn't always running, you don't need to try to configure it to
play nice with certain sites or programs. That's why I prefer Windows
Defender.

I asked about this earlier and received no response. I couldn't read
anything on the home screen with Window-Eyes. With JAWS, all I can
read is a number of graphics labeled with numbers. Labeling these
would either require sighted assistance or a lot of trial and error. I
too would like serious help reading Sophos with JAWS. By the way, NVDA
did a little better, but it was not perfect.

Hello,
To get to the tool bar in Chrome use the F6 key. You might have to hit it a
couple of times. F6 will cycle you from the web page to the address bar and
the other tool bars if there are any. You can also try activating the touch
cursor in JAWS and finding the tool bar that way.

Hi everyone!

Back in 2013, when I was finally declared legally blind and had to
switch from Zoom Text to JAWS, JAWS was at version 15.

As I recall, other than having to learn it on my own because the
Lighthouse here is a bad joke, there were few, if any problems I had
with it, it just worked. JAWS 16 was pretty much the same but with the
addition of the very useful command search function.

Then came JAWS 17 with the apparent almost complete rewrite of the
engine. From there it seemed like every time I turned around I was
running into another misfunction of JAWS. Version 18, when it came out
wasn't much better.

So, after long thought, as well as fighting an apparently
recalcitrant version of JAWS, I've finally decided to install version
16 to see how it compares to version 18. If it works as well as my
memory of it recalls, I will eventually uninstall JAWS 18, and
consider not maintaining my SMA anymore. Besides my dissatisfaction
with versions 17 and 18, it seems like most of the enhancements are
for Windows 10 and have no effect on my Windows 7 system which I have
no plans to upgrade. If things do change for the better in the future,
I can always reestablish a new SMA.

I'm just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this idea or has
already preceded me in downgrading back to version 16.

Thanks!

Here are Google Chrome questions I have come up with so far.

1. When in an address bar, with Internet Explorer, I was able to press F6
to get back into the main page. How does one do this with Google Chrome?

2. I also have found that for instance on Amazon, that some checkboxes and
combo boxes don't appear as such, and I cannot makeappropriate choices that
I can see offered in internet explorer.

3. On Youtube, for instance, I could jump by headings or buttons, as the
need arose, but don't seem to navigate as easily with Google Chrome.

4. On facebook, for instance, I do not find an events option when I want to
check birthdays or other upcoming events. I could always see the link for
that on my FB home page with Internet Explorer.

The reason I would like to switch to Chrome is that I find it to work much
faster. I have Internet Explorer 11, and it seems to get hung up with Jaws
sometimes when trying to open a web site. I am using Jaws 18, I saw the
same behavior in Jaws 17, and at times I would actually lose Jaws and would
have to reload it.

I'm sure I'll come up with more questions as they arise.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

If you arrow in the message, and you hear a link;

Example, www.myplace.com
Just use the right arrow key to move inside the link, and then press enter.
I normally go past the www. And to the first letter and press enter.
Are you 100% there's a link within the message?
Maybe there's some kind of graphic within the link.
Where it says, link click here!

Hi Jaws users list, In my continued effort to do my part in helping all the
users of window eyes learn how to use Jaws 18, please read below.
How to access and use the Jaws help topics system.
Most of this material was taken directly from the Jaws help system of the Jaws
18 version, provided by the VFO group.
I take no credit for this material, I am only using this as a learning tool, to
teach new Jaws users how to use Jaws.

If you are using Jaws to run from the system tray like I recommend.
Press Insert+J, opens the Jaws options window.
*Tip, if you are not running Jaws from the system tray, press ALT+Tab,
highlight the Jaws window, press ALT+F, to bring up the same menu.
Press the letter H, opens the help section of the Jaws window.
Down arrow to, Jaws help topics, press Enter.
*Tip, press Insert+J, opens the Jaws options page, press the letter H, followed
by the letter J, to directly open the Jaws help topics page.
You will hear:
JAWS 18 Help, Contents page, Tree view
Introduction book open, 9 items
This is a simple tree view of Jaws help books.
Press the Right arrow key to open any category, press the left arrow key to
close any open category.
Press Enter followed by the F6 key, to open that section of the Jaws help
system.
For example.
After pressing the Insert+J, to open the Jaws window.
After pressing the letter H, to go to the Help section of the Jaws window.
After pressing the letter J, you will be directly taken to, the Jaws help
topics page.
After you press the down arrow key to, About JAWS Cursors.
After pressing enter on, About JAWS Cursors.
After pressing the F6 key, you will see the following page in the Jaws help
HTML system:
*Tip, remember HTML, means that you can press H, for headings, press the Tab
key to jump by links, press Insert+F7, to display a Jaws links list, and so on.
After pressing enter on, About JAWS Cursors, and pressing the F6 key, press
Control+Home, to go to the top of the page, down arrow through the page,
Control+you
will hear.

About JAWS Cursors
Navigating through Windows with JAWS is accomplished with cursors.

The PC Cursor is activated by default when JAWS starts. If you are using a

Judy

Sophos isn't real accessible; you're best bet is to use Windows Defender
a.k.a. Microsoft Security Essentials in earlier versions of Windows before
Windows 10. Then, as a backup, use an off-line scanner to periodically run
a double-check on your system along with practicing good web habits i.e.
avoiding peer-to-peer sites, the dark web, and opening unknown email
attachments or links.

I use the Sophos Virus Removal tool, which is pretty accessible. You may
need to use the Jaws Convenient OCR to update the scanning engine if you
haven't used it in the past month, and you might have to also use that to
initiate a scan. But, at least the results are viewable and since it isn't
always running, you don't need to try to configure it to play nice with
certain sites or programs. That's why I prefer Windows Defender.

So, I saw a post on twitter, and it is talking about antivirus. Part of

The easiest way to ensure that your antivirus software is working is to
use the EICAR test file.

The EICAR test file is a virus simulator developed by the European

for your review. When i went to send the original message intending to
keep things in tact, the outbound picked it up as harmful which means it
worked, but MSE never picked it up nor what I've written below. A bit
concerning.

I did this, and found that microsoft security essentials leaves it.

I got concerned when I knowingly saved a file as I wanted to see if it
would pick up the file. I left it for awhile and saved it on one of my
drives. I submitted it using I believe it was av test or a site that I
found that allowed me to see what antivirus picked this particular file
I had up. MSE never picked it up. Now that I'm a Jaws user, what
antivirus besides MSE would work with Jaws?

I've got Windows 7, 64 bit. I don't think MSE is doing the trick
anymore if a file can go undetected for that long, and it never got
flagged for review. It was a zip, with an executable in it, which i
knew was dangerous, but I save them at times to see if the thing is
working and picks them up.

if jaws is not in the system tray all you have to do is alt tab to open the
jaws screen and press f1 to do the same thing.
i can not put jaws in the system tray as a standard user because i can not
unhide the icons. what i change as a administrator will not apply to the
standard user account either.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] How to access and use the Jaws help topics system

Hi Jaws users list, In my continued effort to do my part in helping all the
users of window eyes learn how to use Jaws 18, please read below.
How to access and use the Jaws help topics system.
Most of this material was taken directly from the Jaws help system of the
Jaws
18 version, provided by the VFO group.
I take no credit for this material, I am only using this as a learning tool,
to teach new Jaws users how to use Jaws.

*Tip, press Insert+J, opens the Jaws options page, press the letter H,
followed by the letter J, to directly open the Jaws help topics page.
*Tip, remember HTML, means that you can press H, for headings, press the Tab
key to jump by links, press Insert+F7, to display a Jaws links list, and so
on.
After pressing enter on, About JAWS Cursors, and pressing the F6 key, press
Control+Home, to go to the top of the page, down arrow through the page,
Control+you
will hear.

About JAWS Cursors
Navigating through Windows with JAWS is accomplished with cursors.
These cursors determine the focus of JAWS speech and are often directly
linked with Windows cursors.

The PC Cursor - Follows Keystrokes

This cursor is linked to the keyboard functions of Windows and applications.
This is the cursor that is used when typing information, moving through
options in dialog boxes, and selecting options or icons.
As you type information, the PC Cursor follows along with each key you
press.
If you are making a selection in a menu or dialog box, the PC Cursor
highlights the currently selected object.
The PC Cursor is activated by default when JAWS starts. If you are using a
different cursor, pressing NUM PAD PLUS returns you to the PC Cursor.
*Tip, If you are using the Jaws touch cursor, pressing NUM PAD PLUS twice
quickly returns you to the PC Cursor.

The JAWS Cursor - Follows Mouse Pointer

The JAWS Cursor is linked to mouse pointer functions in Windows and other
applications.
It is used to read information the PC Cursor cannot read, such as toolbar
information.
The mouse follows along with the JAWS Cursor when it is moved, and you
therefore have access to information in an application window that is beyond
the scope of the PC Cursor.
To activate the JAWS Cursor, press NUM PAD MINUS.

The Invisible Cursor - Explore Without Moving Focus

The Invisible Cursor allows you to move around the screen without changing
the position of the PC Cursor or mouse pointer.
You can use this cursor to read text and access options that you cannot move
to with the PC Cursor.
You can also use the Invisible Cursor to provide a quick overview of the
information currently available on the screen.
To activate the Invisible Cursor, press NUM PAD MINUS twice quickly.

if it won't throw me back into the info bar again. Will try it, thanks.

First navigate to the link, http, now move your right arrow into the
address, now press enter, The second way is, to use the keystroke, insert+f7
to bring up a list of links.

Hello, Everyone,

What is the work-around when you try to open a link from within a message,
but are thrown into the information area? This happened to me at work one
time, but I was able to find the option to open the link by right-clicking.
Now, this option does not exist on the home computer I am using.

Your collective wisdom is appreciated, thanks.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Google Chrome help, please.

2017-06-04 Thread Judy Jones

Judy

[JAWS-Users] Junk folder-Jaws-users Group, Might want to check

2017-06-04 Thread Geno Stone
I keep forgetting to post. I have seen no one mention. So, Might not be a
big issue. Yet, here, 2016 Microsoft Outlook Office Complete and E-mail,
using Jaws 18 latest.
Sometimes David F., Sir, your group mail goes to my Junk folder, sometimes
one or two and sometimes several. So, What I do is use the application key
on each high-lighted e-mail, go down to Junk mail, thinking it is called and
enter, this puts a list up and I go to not junk. Enter there and it will
give me the Third screen of Jaws user.. This is checked as a safe group to
receive from. I uncheck and then check a couple of times, making sure when
unchecking it twice, it is checked. Then tab once more and again check and
uncheck and check and then Ok and they disappear to the in-box.
Then Outlook will remember for a while and like after a week of smooth
running, Today two more popped up. So if anyone is not receiving mail from
your group, this might be the issue. Gene/Geno, Portland, ME.

Re: [JAWS-Users] opening up an email

2017-06-04 Thread Ken Chernack
Hi
I use the control home technique to get to the top of the email text.
Why?
IMHO, it is not totally in the reader's control to start at the top since
the sender, based on how they end the email, has the control.
If the sender just ends the email at the bottom, I have found that that
position is what I inherit as the reader.
If the sender ends the their email by going back to the top of it before
sending it, then you start at the top.

This logic works most of the time, but since the reader does not control the
sender's client, it turns out to be a crap shoot, thus
The control home behavior is constant and works to get you starting to read
at the top of the email.

My 2 cents.
Ken

Patty,

Using outlook 365 2016 with windows 10 creaters update build 1703 15063 and
jfw 18 latest build can conferm tat this happens though it does not happen
with every message. I can not tell when it does, but most of the time it
will do it. I just go to the top of the message with ctrl home and start
reading and all is well other wize.

Hey Gang,

I haven't heard anything, so I thought I would try it again, smiles.

Every time I open up an email it starts reading in the middle, or sometimes
at the bottom.

How do I get it to read at the top?

I'm using windows10, jaws18, MS2010, and outlook, on a 32 bit computer.

Thanks Patti

For a very Jaws friendly free email option take a look at:

It can be a little tricky to get started if you want a POP3 account, but it
