You can indeed. But when I tried this, the results were far from "professional"
standard. Of course this would always depend on the document in question, but
still. Not sure if it's really been improved that much in the 2018 beta, but
even Freedom scientific maintained that convenient oCR is no substitute for
your commercial OCR package.

Your point still has merit though because if you already have Open book, then

pick the freedom printer. Can you even print from file explorer? Because if
not, you still have to open the pdf in Acrobat first to hit print, and you

It's fun having enough options to do this to have amunition for a discussion on

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] A possible bit of a problem

Hi.

As Eric said, you can keep both without issue. What happens here is that, when
you upgrade to a new major version, in stead of doing an in place upgrade, it
makes a whole new folder and installs a separate copy just of the new version.
This allows you to, as you noticed, have multiple copies of major versions. The
advantage here is that issues with one that make it difficult or impossible to
do something you need, if your other version or versions were ok with doing
that, you should be able to shut down the current version and manually run the
other version to have all of its capabilities and, in the case of falling back
to 18 from 2018, be rid of any bugs that may have been introduced in the 2018
cycle and not yet fixed.

If you need to switch to the old version, here's the steps

1. Shut down the existing version of JAWS using insert+f4, then pressing enter.

2. Hold your windows key, and press r then release both. This is the
shortcut for the run dialogue. It's an edit box where you can type the
path of a file you want to execute, it's handy in some situations, such
as this. Go ahead and hit windows+r while JAWS is still running if you
want to find out what the run dialogue looks like.

Tip: If you want to make sure you know how to type jaws18 etc, try it
with JAWS already running. If you specify 18 while running 2018
currently, it'll just open the jaws window or the jaws system tray menu
(if running from tray), even if you specify a different, but valid,
version than what is currently running.

3. After hitting Windows+r, wait for a few seconds to ensure it has
popped up then type one of the following in the run box

jaws17

jaws18

jaws2018

depending on which version of JAWS you want to start. If you hear a
sound, you either didn't get focused in the right place or you typed it
wrong. If you end up stuck with no screen reader, press
ctrl+windows+enter to start narator. If you're on an older version of
windows you might need to just use windows+enter or windows+u, if you
use windows+u you'll need to tab around to the read text on screen aloud
using narator and press space to check it in order to actually start
narator. Once Narator is running you can start JAWS using the JAWS
shortcuts on your desktop - should have one for every version of JAWS
that is installed.

Lastly, if, when, you do uninstall versions of JAWS you no longer need,
select the freedom scientific jaws (version number) in the manage apps
screen, or programs and features. Making sure it is a JAWS you're
uninstalling not one of the other freedom scientific products like
synthesizer or talking install, etc. During the uninstallation you'll be
asked do you want to remove shared components. Choose no, don't remove
shared components. This is the answer to your question about how to
uninstall one without uninstalling parts of both of them.

Until jaws 2018 is released and is stable to your satisfaction, I highly
recommend keeping your JAWS 18, and, for the record, I personally do
keepone previous version installed than that which is the latest I have
installed. This is in case I find a bug even in the release version that
works ok in the previous version, or if I change a setting or break the
latest one and I can just switch to another version quickly and decide
to beat on the new, broken, version to try and fix it later on when I'm
done with what ever it is I'm doing.

Good luck with your shiny new Shark!

able to open a secure graphically sent pdf so that I might read it.
Nothing else works, not even JAWS OCR.  I suppose that I could print
to my HP printer, too, but I'd be using quite a bit of paper and would
need to physically  scan each page.  So, Open Book is my buddy.

Hi.

According to Erik on the latest episode of the FSCast podcast, Open
book is still relevant. It gives you the 3 OCR engines in one package
for better accuracy, an easy to use self voiced interface, ability to
edit recognized content and a whole host of extra goodies enabling
you to really do a number on scanning that document or book and
making it as good as possible. It's for more serious occasions where
JAWS acquire image OCR capability is for the casual user who wants to
check mail or quickly read a book etc. You could of course acquire
the text of an image then copy and paste it out of the results viewer
into word pad or something similar and there's your editing
capability. HJ Pad for that matter.

So said, right now it doesn't sound like VFO is interested in
discontinuing Open Book in favor of using that OCR which is included
in JAWS.

Does anyone know if with the inclusion of the scanning features in
JAWS 2018 if VFO is intending to end support or development of Open
Book?  It has been quite a while since there were any
updates/improvements to Open Book and this new feature set would
seem to indicate a lack of interest in maintaining Open Book as a
separate product line.

If that is the case, does anyone know what OCR programs are being
used in JAWS 2018 to perform the recognition and will there be ways
to "tweek" the performance as there is in Open Book?

It's an interesting release and future developments will be
interesting.

Re: [JAWS-Users] opinion on using caps lock as JAWS key

2017-09-05 Thread LeDon
There is no problem in using the caplock key as the Jaws key. There is
nothing that you can do using the numpad that can't be done with the Jaws
key. And using the caplock key is easier with less hand movement required.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] opinion on useing caps lock as JAWS key

I am a new user of JAWS and am having some difficulty in using the insert
key with some keystrokes. I am thinking of trying the caps lock as the JAWS
key, but before I do I would like to know if there is any problems with
using it. It seems that it would be easier to use. Thank you

Re: [JAWS-Users] Office 364

2017-09-05 Thread Tom Behler
Holger:

I now use the latest version of Jaws 18, and it works relatively well with
Office 365.

When I first purchased Office 365, I was using Jaws 16, and had some issues,
which is what caused me to upgrade to Jaws 17 and ultimately 18.

I don't remember what those issues were, but I do recall that some of them
were significant, especially in relation to Outlook 2016.

Which jaws works well with Office 364? At work I have jaws 16 which I think
does not work with it. They are going to install it in my PC at work. Hope I
