Hi Adrian,

Thank you for telling us the exact option name. It is always easier to have an
exact option name when one is trying to fix something, and it is also useful
for me when contributing in projects, especially translating, in which members
usually communicate in English.

Fernando and Greg,

For single page view in the American English version, make sure you're in the
Adobe/Acrobat window, press alt-v for view, then arrow down to "Page display
submenu." Press enter and arrow down to "single page view." Actually, if your
menu is like mine, you will land on the "single page view" option on opening
this submenu. Press enter.

Hi Greg,

When you early said that the hotkeys I mentioned didn't work for you, I thought
that you were viewing the document directly in the web browser. However, now
that you say that the document is saved in Downloads, you may be opening the
document with other program instead of Adobe's one by default.
If you're sure to be using Adobe Acrobat Reader DC or Adobe Reader, perhaps the
document was configured to display pages in a special way. In this case, in the
View menu, find a sub menu related to pages view (not page navigation) and
select Single Page View. I can't give you the exact sub menu name because I use
Adobe Acrobat Reader DC in Spanish and, unlike Microsoft, Adobe hasn't a
repository in which to find exact string equivalences and, although there's an
option in Adobe Acrobat Reader DC preferences to change UI language, it seem
that language packs are only available for enterprises or some kind of
subscription.
Regarding search in a PDF document, it is done in the way Adrian explained.
However, since Adobe's products by default do not render the whole documents to
screen readers to avoid excessive RAM and CPU usage, for this to work in the
whole document, you first have to press CTRL+SHIFT+5 and, in the dialog which
opens, tab to the group of radio buttons and select to read the entire
document. When okaying this dialog, the document will start to prepare; when
finished, the JAWS search feature will work for the whole document as if this
would be a web page.
Finally, in the Reading preferences category Brian indicated, you can change,
Ammon others, the options which appear in the CTRL+SHIFT+5 dialog, but
permanently for all documents. Unless you understand what you're doing, I
would'nt recommend to change options here. I personally like to render
documents one page at a time even when they're not big (by default documents
with less than 50 pages are rendered entirely, and with 50 or more one page at
a time; you can change the limit for this consideration as big or small, or
turn this calculation completely off) and with single page view despite the one
set in each document.

Hope it helps somewhat.

Since I am completely blind, I don't know hotkeys related to visual settings.
However, check for these in the View menu for the settings you need.
Additionally, I suggest you to check the Accessibility Helper to see if special

JAWS. This wizard is found in Accessibility sub menu in Edit menu.

Hello Greg,

You might want to check preferences by using CTRL K. Pick the Reading category
from the list of categories. When you tab a few times you will find "page VS
document" and make sure it is set to "Read entire document." You might also go
under the accessibility category of options and make sure "enable assistive

should probably close the program and open it again.

I'm sure you're right. To the extent I understand anything about PDF files,
they need to be properly tagged. What I do in order to get the information I
need from untagged financial statements is to figure out what exactly that is.
Typically, it's the amount due and the list of transactions, if any. I go

If I want to read the transactions, I search for a portion of a date. For
example, if the statement has a closing date in mid-September, I'll search for
the two characters 9/ Since the most recent, and therefore top, transaction
probably occurred in September. Naturally if 9/ doesn't work, I substitute 8/.

Note. To search in a PDF document, press JAWS key+control+f.

Hello, everyone.

I have recently noticed a problem with Adobe Acrobat Reader DC version 17.0.

For some reason, words are often run together in the document when I'm
trying to read it.

This problem does not appear on the visual screen. In other words, if
someone sighted looks at the document, it looks fine, with no words or
characters run together.

This seems to occur mainly with Microsoft Word documents that have been
converted to a PDF file format.

I'm thinking that this problem might be a Jaws issue, because the document
displays fine visually.

Has anyone else had this issue, and if so, is there something I need to
change either in Adobe Acrobat Reader DC or Jaws to make documents read more
properly?

Thanks as always!

In my work environment, I use ABBY FineReader Pro 12 to convert PDF files
containing images of text to Microsoft Word format, which I then read.
There's now a newer version of ABBYY FineReader, but I can't attest to its
accessibility. With version 12, it's easy to convert a PDF file via the
context menu in Windows File Explorer.

Unfortunately, this is a shortcoming of the scanner, combined with the OCR
feature. In order to fix this issue, you'll have to increase your DPI (dots
Per Inch) as it would seem that your scanner isn't up to the task.

If that doesn't work, try scanning it into a colour document, while
increasing the DPI, and see if that works.

It'll take you a while to scan a document, but if you want accuracy, then
this is the price you'll have to pay, that, or get a better scanner.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Question

2017-09-09 Thread Scorpio
Unfortunately, this is a shortcoming of the scanner, combined with the OCR
feature. In order to fix this issue, you'll have to increase your DPI (dots
Per Inch) as it would seem that your scanner isn't up to the task.

If that doesn't work, try scanning it into a colour document, while
increasing the DPI, and see if that works.

It'll take you a while to scan a document, but if you want accuracy, then
this is the price you'll have to pay, that, or get a better scanner.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Question

2017-09-09 Thread Scorpio
Unfortunately, you'll have to either, get a subscription, or purchase the
program outright.

Not sure if they're still allowing the option to purchase the product
outright, as I heard this option was going the way of the dinosaur, or not,
but if they don't, you can always try an older version that someone may be
selling, as they'll do the same thing. The only difference is that you
won't get the same OCR technology as the new version, but you do what you
can afford.

Basically, you have to convert the PDF to text, html, word, or some other
format more easily read with Jaws.

My advice is HTML, as that one retains continuity better, and is easier to
read.

I think the free version used to have an option to convert the PDF to plain
text, but I'm not sure if they've done away with that.

In any case, you'll have to save the document to your computer first, then
attempt the conversion. Do not leave the file in the temp folder when you
convert it.

Hope that helps.

Justin, I think some clarity is called for here. As you know, JAWS is a
speech synthesizer, so you don't convert PDF to JAWS. Instead, you convert a
PDF file into a form that JAWS can read. Many PDF files are readable without
us having to do anything, except for making sure Adobe's accessibility
settings are correct. If a PDF file isn't immediately readable, some
programs enable you to perform optical character recognition (OCR) to create
a new document that JAWS can read. Convenient OCR is such a program built in
to recent versions of JAWS. However, as other listers have pointed out, it
doesn't format well, which is one reason why people use the Kurzweil Reader
and similar devices. Even then, some PDF files defy any kind of
accessibility conversion, as Greg may be finding out and as I've encountered
with the receipts my audio guy issued to me this week.

If you're opening it in the internet temp folder, then I don't think it'll
read past that, I think it's a security issue.

Try saving the PDF document to your hard drive, into your downloads folder,
and open the PDF from there.

This should fix it I think, especially if my assessment is what I think it

go directly to the amount due by searching for the $ dollar sign.

If I want to read the transactions, I search for a portion of a date. For
example, if the statement has a closing date in mid-September, I'll search
for the two characters
9/
Since the most recent, and therefore top, transaction probably occurred in

Re: [JAWS-Users] Read Receipt on Outlook 2016

2017-09-09 Thread Scorpio
You can actually set that to never send a read receipt, that way it does not
bother you with asking if you want to send one.

If the person on the other side of that requires a receipt, then they won't
get it, but if you're not required, you won't miss that feature.

So, rule of thumb is, if you think you'll ever have to send a read receipt,
then set it to ask, but if you do not think you'll ever have to send one
out, set it to never send one, and those pesky dialog boxes will go away.

Hi All,

When you are using Outlook 2016 and you send a read receipt does the other
person receiving the email get a box that comes up on his screen telling you
that so and so is requesting a read receipt and you get a choice to check
either yes or no to send the read receipt notice back to the sender?

The reason I am asking is I use Outlook 2010 and when I receive an email
from my wife at work who is using 365 and when I open her email I get the
box asking me whether I want to accept the read receitpt by clicking yes or
no. But when I send an email to my wife using Outlook 2010 and request a
read receipt she does not get a choice of yes or no. So my question is has
this read receipt changed after 2010 as to what the recipient sees when she
opens the email. Does this person have the choice of answering yes or no to
the read receipt?

Morning,

I am wondering if any of you have suggestions to make about JAWS accessible
software for two areas? First is a good basic money management program. For
years I used Quicken but as new version have emerged, they have become
increasingly cumbersome to use with screen readers. I would like bank and
credit card account access if at all possible. If any of you have a step by
step guide for Quicken 2016 or later, that too might solve my problems.

The other area is managing a collection of DVD and Blu Ray disks. I have
looked at lots of options with free trials, but again, most have offered, at
best, poor access.

Thanks for any guidance,

Rick

P.S. I too have been in list unwilling withdrawal for much of the week. Went
back and reactivated my membership and I am getting feeds again. Not sure if
it was that or the end of the message doubt that others have mentioned.

[JAWS-Users] our recent mail stoppage

2017-09-09 Thread David Ferrin
I do not know what the cause for our recent email problem was and as I was
about to investigate whatever it was seems to have fixed itself.

A few years ago I had my guy in Canada reboot the mail server since that is one
privilege I do not have on my own after experiencing pretty much the same
thing, IE we went a few days without any messages. I was about to ask him to
check things on his end but as it turned out all seems to be well once again.
For what it is worth if memory serves the company I am using does have some
servers in Texas, although exactly where I do not know. I’m sure we all know
about the beating those folks there have been getting. Never the less the three
of us are monitoring things and will take whatever action seems appropriate at
the time.

Greg,

I'm sure you're right. To the extent I understand anything about PDF files,
they need to be properly tagged. What I do in order to get the information I
need from untagged financial statements is to figure out what exactly that is.
Typically, it's the amount due and the list of transactions, if any. I go
directly to the amount due by searching for the $ dollar sign.

I realize this is a workaround, but perhaps it's helpful.

[JAWS-Users] Suggestions for software needed

2017-09-09 Thread Rick Ely

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Question

Dr. tom Behler from Michigan

Re: [JAWS-Users] Changing pages in a pdf document

2017-09-09 Thread Adrian Spratt

If I want to read the transactions, I search for a portion of a date. For
example, if the statement has a closing date in mid-September, I'll search for
the two characters
9/
Since the most recent, and therefore top, transaction probably occurred in
September. Naturally if 9/ doesn't work, I substitute 8/.

Note. To search in a PDF document, press JAWS key+control+f.

I realize this is a workaround, but perhaps it's helpful.

Fernando,
Thanks so much for responding. Unfortunately neither Control+page down or
control+shift+n works on the document I am trying to read. Perhaps it’s the
way the document was created that is causing the problem. The document is a
monthly statement downloaded from my credit card web site. Iam using adobe
acrobat reader DC.

Hi Stanley,

It sounds like your scanner driver was possibly changed. Try the following:

Go to the advanced menu with the keystroke, Alt + A. Then press the letter,
D, or arrow to, Device Selection, & press enter. With Device Selection open
tab 1 time into a list of available options. Arrow up / down, & usually
your scanner brand + WIA, is the the 1 to try first. Tab to, Okay, & press
enter to save & close. Now go to, Settings, with the keystroke, Alt + G, &
save there as well.
Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

[JAWS-Users] My Scanning Problem

2017-09-09 Thread Stanley Haupt
When the JAWS2018 Beta became available, I did put it on the Windows 10
computer. Since that time my scanner/fax/printer does not scann in Openbook
and DocuScanPlus. Both scanning software packeges indicate that there is no
scanner or camera present. I am able to print documents, and send/receive
faxes with the different printers.

I did send a report about this problem to FS VFO Group on Monday.

Does anyone have any suggestions how I might fix this scanning problem?
