Subject: [JAWS-Users] Firefox 58 and JAWS compatibility

Hi,

Today Mozilla released Firefox 58, which fixes most of the issues of FF 57 with
NVDA. With latest JAWS 2018 build, however, there are still some issues which
looks to make daily use inaccurate.

When the necessary JAWS updates to work well with this Firefox version will be
released?

Best regards and thanks in advance!

2018-01-23 Thread net bat66
you have to do one more thing to actually save the default.jss and default.jsb
files that you deleted.
you have to open the default.jss file and then open the pull down menu and use
save.
when you do the two files you mentioned will be saved in that folder where you
deleted them.
if you don't jaws will use the factory script files from the program
data\freedom scientific\scripts folder instead.

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 2018 repair

Hi Ralph,

Now that you told what you were doing, I can give you the exact fix.
When you modified the Default script file in JAWS 18 and pressed CTRL+S, Script
Manager saved the modified version in the JAWS user folder. When you imported
settings to JAWS 2018 the file was also saved in the JAWS 2018 user folder, but
since the file is from 18.0 and you didn't used the Use statement, the problem
is that JAWS 2018 is using the Default.jsb file based on JAWS 18.0.

To fix this, with JAWS closed, go to the following folder:
C:\Users\YourUser\AppData\Roaming\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\2018\Settings\Enu
In this folder, find and delete the files named Default.jss and Default.jsb,
then restart JAWS and the problem should be resolved.

As a suggestion, if your keyboard hasn't the Applications key, you usually
won't need to make any modifications to get back that functionality into
another key. This is because Windows always had a keyboard shortcut for opening
context menus when your keyboard has not Applications key: you can just press
SHIFT+F10 and, except in less standard programs like games in full screen mode,
you will see the same context menu. Similarly, if you're using a keyboard in
which there's no Windows key, you can quickly open the Start menu by pressing
CTRL+ESCAPE.

Hope it helps!

I tried the "save as shared" and it wouldn't let me.

I think this problem came up because my Jaws 18 default script was modified to
allow the printscreen to act like the application key since my laptop doesn't
have an application key. When I installed Jaws 2018 a couple months ago I had
it import my Jaws 18 settings.

The problem was that when I press the "printscreen" key, I got a message saying
something about an unknown call to script. Since I normally use a wireless
keyboard that has the application key I hadn't gotten around to trying to fix
things until this weekend. I opened the default script in the script manager.
It showed the modification I had made to my Jaws 18 default script. I saved
the 2018 script and exited the script manager. Now I'm getting the message
about the default script not being found.

I'm a script ignoramus so have no idea what to do. I would appreciate some

Thanks.

Unless you were modifying this file or installing scripts that make
modifications to it, this is rare.
However, if you can bring the file in Script Manager with CTRL+SHIFT+D, try
using the Save As Shared option in the File menu to see if recompiling the file
fixes the issue. This is because JAWS actually doesn't search the default.jss,
but the compiled file in binary format, that is, default.jsb. Note that if you
have UAC enabled, you will need to run Script Manager as administrator to be
able to save into the shared folder.
If you were making modifications, these were saved in the JAWS user folder when
you pressed CTRL+S. If so, go to the JAWS settings folder for your user (use
the Explore My Settings shortcut or go to the path
C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Freedom
Scientific\JAWS\version\Settings\enu), and delete the default.jsb file in this
folder if it exists. If you use JAWS in a language other than English, change
Enu for the three letter abbreviation of your language, for example ESN for
Spanish.

Hope it helps!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Sorting excel 2010 spread sheet

2018-01-23 Thread amcarr1
Hi Greg,

You need to select all of your data, including the column headings.
Use your applications key to bring up the context menu.
Select sort.
>From the Sort menu, select custom.

You are now in a dialog box which JAWS does not read well. Use the tab key
to move around in it. The most important things you need to find are as
follows:

--The checkbox that indicates whether or not the top row is a headings row
for the columns of data, or if it is actual data. If you have column
headings, make sure it is checked.

--Tab until you get to a combo box, or maybe it is a list box, for which
column you want to use for sorting. JAWS can be very uncooperative with
reading the contents.

--There are 2 more combo/list boxes that allow you to set information about
sorting on this column I.E. A-Z, Z-A, ascending, descending, etc. Depending
on what you want your sort to look like, you may not need to deal with this.
Again, JAWS is not always cooperative with reading this information.

--There should be another set of 3 combo/list boxes that will allow you to
select the second column you want to use for your sort, as well as its
criteria.

I can never remember which column will need to be in the first set of boxes,
verses which one goes in the second set. You will have to play around with
it.

Yes, Dennis, that is the option I am talking about. However, it's not ideal.
You should be able to have the names appear in links, say, in mid-sentence.
That's what most people do. When they make a post, tryping in a person's
name highlights that name and automatically turns it into a link. It looks
like, unless someone has another solution, "tag friends" is pretty much the
only thing you can do with m.facebook.com.

This is because Windows always had a keyboard shortcut for opening
context menus when your keyboard has not Applications key: you can just press

you will see the same context menu. Similarly, if you're using a keyboard in

The best solution I have found for that is to manually search for the page
using the search box. I know, we want all this stuff to come up
automatically in our feeds. But that's just not the way facebook works.
Believe me, people complain about this stuff all the time.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 2018 repair

2018-01-23 Thread Ralph Supernaw

I would appreciate some
easy-to-follow instructions about what to do.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Mysterious reset of file associations Win 10

2018-01-23 Thread JM Casey
I don't know, but all I can say is, that's Windows 10 for you. You set
something to be a certain way, and Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom,
"fix" it so it's back to the way they *assume* you want it. It's pretty
maddening and short of writing scripts of some kind to check and restore
settings after every update, there doesn't seem a lot we can do other than
constantly re-tweaking our own stuff. I've not had this particular problem
with file associations but I've had several instances of things being reset
to some way I don't want them after a Windows update. Looks like MS just
expects us all to live with it, and never mind all the time we waste putting
things back the way they were.

Hi Ted,

Officially, so to speak, you do have the latest update, but FS / VFO did come
out with a minor update to fix a couple issues, & will be an official update
when the next update comes out. This so called minor / unofficial, so to

Problem

Reading issues have been reported when using JAWS 2018.1712.10 (released in

1. In Windows Mail, JAWS 2018 will not speak the body of an email while
navigating by character or word. And JAWS may read a previously opened email
instead of the current one.
2. In Sticky Notes, JAWS 2018 repeats the character in focus and will not speak
the text while navigating by character or word.

Hi, Chad. I'm assuming your student is using JAWS and that you're working with
JAWS to find the solution. PDF files need to be set up specifically for
accessibility. Here's a short list of instructions compiled from posts by Mike
B and Gerald Levy, members of this list. Note that you must be in the Adobe or
Acrobat application to make these adjustments:

1. Go into preferences with control-k. JAWS lands on an item in a tree view. If
you have been here before, it will be the item you last opened. Arrow down to
Security Enhanced. Note that this is the item below Security. Then uncheck
Enable Protected Mode at startup, Note. When making changes in the Security
Enhanced section, you will be told that Adobe needs to be restarted, but you
can wait to finish the other changes first.
2. Launch the Edit menu, scroll down to the Accessibility submenu and open it.
Scroll down to the Set up Assistant and press enter. The Set Up Assistant has
five screens, but the only change you have to make is on the Last, screen 5 of
5. Go through all the screens, pressing spacebar on Next in each instance,
until you reach the fifth and final screen. Here, tab to the check box labeled
"Open PDF documents in the browser" and make sure that it is unchecked. It may
be checked by default. Then tab to the Okay button.

Hi Everyone,

On a laptop, I have:

Windows 7

Word 2010, Outlook 2010 Home Edition and

JAWS 13

Some time ago, I set up some folders in outlook to save some of my important
e-mails that I received throughout the years. Today I needed to access some
e-mail's that I needed and they weren't in my folder, or any other folder
that I had set up. I noticed that the last e-mail in my folder was from
2015. It seams that the other e-mail's prior to 2015 disappeared. Does
Outlook purge old e-mails after a certain period of time, or do they go some
where else? If they are still in my laptop, is there an easy way to
retrieve them?

Any help in simple terms will be greatly appreciated. I'm not that great of
a computer user.

Thank you,

Re: [JAWS-Users] Facebook Question

2018-01-23 Thread JM Casey
Yes, Dennis, that is the option I am talking about. However, it's not ideal.
You should be able to have the names appear in links, say, in mid-sentence.
That's what most people do. When they make a post, tryping in a person's
name highlights that name and automatically turns it into a link. It looks
like, unless someone has another solution, "tag friends" is pretty much the
only thing you can do with m.facebook.com.

says tag friends button press it check the ones you want tagged hit done and
presto. This is using the mobile site.

HI Judy.
I think I know what you are talking about, and I have come to the conclusion
that m.facebook.com is just kind of broken. The only way I have found to tag
people is to use the "tag friends" option in the "more" section you can open
when making a post. There just does not seem to be any other way to do it.
You might have better luck with the regular facebook site, but I don't blame
you for not wanting to use it as it's quite a bit more cluttered.

Thank you for your message. I really haven't solved the mystery yet. But
the question is: How do attach a hyper link to a word in Facebook. I have

I would like to know how to do a hyper link on Facebook when writing the

Re: [JAWS-Users] google classroom and PDF files

2018-01-23 Thread Adrian Spratt

Enable Protected Mode at startup,
Note. When making changes in the Security Enhanced section, you will be told
that Adobe needs to be restarted, but you can wait to finish the other changes
first.

Hi, Al.

No, Outlook doesn't destroy email messages before a certain date. One reason I
switched from Outlook Express to Outlook was its capacity to store thousands of
messages going back more than a decade.

I Googled your problem and found a webpage where someone explains how to locate
hidden messages:

Hi Everyone,

On a laptop, I have:

Windows 7

Word 2010, Outlook 2010 Home Edition and

JAWS 13

Some time ago, I set up some folders in outlook to save some of my important
e-mails that I received throughout the years. Today I needed to access some
e-mail's that I needed and they weren't in my folder, or any other folder that
I had set up. I noticed that the last e-mail in my folder was from 2015. It
seams that the other e-mail's prior to 2015 disappeared. Does Outlook purge
old e-mails after a certain period of time, or do they go some where else? If
they are still in my laptop, is there an easy way to retrieve them?

Any help in simple terms will be greatly appreciated. I'm not that great of a
computer user.

Thank you,

Al Sorrentino
