Re: [JAWS-Users] Invisible screen
Hi. I've done some fairly intensive research today after my earlier email on the subject of windows+p to do second screen only not working in windows 10, and came away with the following. 1. This is actually something sighted people want as well. It seems they can set up a virtual second screen and then duplicate or extend onto it, then they're able to stream that display output over ulrta vnc or team viewer or something like that to be able to have display output on another device also running ultra vnc or team viewer. As such, it's a poor man's multiple monitor single system setup. Programmers wanting to ensure their graphical enterfaces scale properly on multi monitor setups without spending for two monitors and or a system supporting two monitors liked to do this. It no longer works. Here's a tip of how they used to do it. You'll know form my revious email that just hitting second screen only then hitting yes or keep these changes or accept or something like that from the windows+p projection options thing used to work just fine. For a while, people were: A. go to pc settings (windows+i) B. navigate to system/display C. find and click detect. this is a button that forces the system to try and find a secondary display if not automagically detected. According to what I've been reading, they then get an option after it says no display detected to choose try using the display anyway, and can click on that to force a second screen. I'm not sure perhaps that's only available for systems with the older style VGA adapters and not those using HDMI or thunderbolt. It certainly doesn't seem to be working for me. I don't get the try anyway option. 2. Drivers that emulate a display without actually requiring a physically connected one. These do exist. You install a fake or ghost display driver that shows up as a second monitor and you can select that as your secondary screen then select it using the projection options and do second screen only, or duplicate or extend as needed, then you can have your ultra vnc or team viewer etc stream from that virtual fake ghost display. For us, we would in theory choose second screen only and obviously have no need of the ultra vnc or team viewer etc. However, in windows 10, the only option I found that can do this, virtualMonitor, isn't compatible. I tried emulating windows 7 on the installer, and that got it to not refuse to run, but then it got stuck. Some research turned up that the driver isn't signed and in 64 bit windows you can't choose to install anyway apparently, so this seems to be a dead end. 3. Using a physical dummy ghost display adapter. Some of us may be familiar with this approach on the Mac Mini computers as they are sluggish with no display connected. This adapter allows for tricking the Mac Mini into thinking it has a display connected and it gets to be more responsive. If we can trick Windows 10 into thinking there is an HDMI display attached we may be able to project to that, though it may or may not provide a power savings. It certainly could allow the screen to be turned off reliably though. Just select second screen only and after going back into projector options to ensure the setting stuck, it should in theory be good to go visit private adult websites or what ever on a laptop without being concerned over much about whether someone can see it if they happen to end up nearby before you've closed what ever private thing out. I've found a couple of these plugs. I know there are ones for VGA, thunderbolt, USB C and HDMI, here's an HDMI one that seems to be small, I've submitted a question there asking just how small it really is, would it would to leave plugged into a laptop at all times? https://www.amazon.com/Headless-Display-Emulator-Headless-1920x1080-generation/dp/B06XT1Z9TF Reading from that site, it seems yet another benefit to using a secondary display is that some systems behave differently when just using the duplicate option. Laptops that disconnect keyboards or behave in some way with their lid closed that can't be controlled in power options like perhaps disconnecting antennas etc, it might be possible to get them to keep function with lid closed using one of these adapters. Anyway, this is a subject I'm extremely interested in, especially in terms of the power savings that can be gotten on a laptop. If any of you out there has ideas, maybe even someone who could try writing a dummy display driver, it could be extremely useful. The screen shade option in JAWS doesn't really save power. Btw, if you have the ability to do a physical mouse left click when screen shade is on, that'll confirm that the shade is still on. A right click promptly disables it though so watch out for that if you're doing something really sensitive. Left click just tells you it's on. I keep my touch pad disabled as I find touch pads evil, they like to jump all over the place

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS sma question
Hi. If you try to do this shortly before the next version of JAWS is released that you won't have a license for, the cost should be around $160. maybe they won't always have that sale but it seems to me they have done it for a couple years now. When you get the letter in the mail letting you know that this is the last version you can use on your SMA, that letter will probably mention the savings if you want to activate it right then. Also, you already know that you'll be good for 2018 and 2019 both before you have to spend that again right? I personally think the up front cost of purchase is high, but I feel the cost of the SMA especially in the sale price window is pretty reasonable, at least for the home use one. 80 dollars for a year is pretty doable for most folks. Re: [JAWS-Users] Invisible screen
Hi. Yes, the windows+p thing should work on win7. If it's a laptop, you wanna do this when ever you have a chance anyway it provides a dramatic increase in battery life. My Asus t100 tablet doubles in battery life from 11 hours to over 20 hours. My Yoga 2 pro laptop goes from 6 hours to about 10. Not all are that extreme. This feature is removed in stock win10 drivers. If your driver for windows 8.1 or 7 will agree to install under win10 you may be able to get the functionality back. My yoga2pro loses this ability every time I let it upgrade to a new windows 10, so I use the vga driver installer that was in the lenovo partition when I got it. That works but I have to set windows not to install drivers automatically or else it promptly updates the driver and breaks it again. The issue is that they made it smart enough to know there's not a second screen, so it doesn't ask you if you really want to do it anymore. Back in the old days, it would just do it then show a message allowing you to confirm that you could still read it, you would click yes or if it had gone black on you, as a sighted user you'd just panick for 30 seconds or so then it would automagically revert back since you never clicked yes. Really annoying to be honest, if I could turn the screen off on this Think Pad t480s I imagine I'd be getting upwards of 15 hours of battery pretty easily. Cheers: Aaron Spears, A.K.A. valiant8086. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS sma question
it also depends on if you have the home or pro version. i just checked on my home version and right now it is $120 but it also had a $14.95 sales tax added to that price. -Original Message- From: Mike B. Wow, I didn't think it would cost that much if you are one version behind. -Original Message- From: Kurt Miller Sent: Saturday, June 9, 2018 8:39 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS sma question I would also have him check with VFO because my SMA ran out with 18. When I called about getting one for 2018, they told me that I had to buy the current version of 2018 and an SMA for 2019 and 2020. This was going to cost me over $400, so he will definitely have to see what his situation is with them.
