Hi Kelly;

Below are some steps that I've typed up for using 7Zip.
To unzip files:

1. Highlight the file or files you want to unzip. They can be both, .ZIP
or

.RAR files or, just 1 or the other. This program has the ability to unzip
both types at the same time.

2. Press the applications / context menu key.

3. Press, the #7 on the number row above the main keyboard or, arrow down
to

7Zip press enter. The first time you use the program you might want to
arrow
down the list to see what options the program has to offer.

4. I arrow down to, extract here, press enter all the time. I do this
because I have a certain folder that all my downloads go into, I extract
all
the files into the same folder.

To compress files:

1. Highlight the file you would like to compress / archive / zip up.

2. Press the applications / context menu key.

3. Press the #7 on the number row above the main keyboard.

4. Arrow down to, Add to Name of File7z, press enter.

Another way to compress:

1. Highlight the file you would like to compress / archive / zip up.

2. Press the applications / context menu key.

3. Press the #7 on the number row above the main keyboard.

4. Press enter on, Add to archive...

5. Tab to Archive format, arrow up or down to select your choice of
compression method.

6. Tab to, compression level, arrow up or down to choose your compression
level.

7. Tab to, compression method, arrow up or down to choose your compression
method.

8. Keep tabbing through to check out the many other options you have in
this
program. When you are through, press spacebar or enter on okay to start
the

/ zipping compression process.

Hope this has helped. Take care.

  Dear Miss Jenny,

Winrar is quite accessible but is commercial software. If you only need
to
unpack .rar archives, you might want to give 7-zip from
  http://www.7-zip.org/

a try. 7-zip is free open source software and, if anything, more
accessible. It works with jaws, nvda, window eyes, etc.

It can open .rar, zip and about a couple dozen other archive types.
Additionally, unlike other decompression software packages, it will not
take over any of your archive file associations unless you tell it to.

There sure is. It's called Jarte, and it is fully compatible with JAWS.
It has a built-in spell checker and the ability to create and save
templates, among other features. And its menus are straightforward and
easy to navigate. I prefer it over MS Word 2007. Check it out:

Or, are the current jaws versions already equipped with those scripts?

I'm a real beginner with Skype. I'm just learning it but I'm using a

I have Skype on my computer already. It comes with Windows 7. I'd

Dear Miss Vicky,

I am using a logitech wireless keyboard with jaws just now. Mine still has
all the keys, however.

You may want to look for a keyboard remapping utility. Mr. Scott aka
Arizona Blue' back on 4tp talked about such a keyboard mapping utility.
I think the one he used and recommended was called keytweak. I do not
remember the home page for it but consulting your favorite search engine
should turn this up.

jaws has an inbuilt utility called keyboard manager with which you can
reassign jaws specific keyboard shortcuts. I am not aware, however, of
this being able to remap windows keys.

the shift+f10 key combo still works for me to bring up the context menu.
this is a windows keyboard shortcut and should work independent of your
jaws version or, indeed, independent of what screenreader you use.

enjoy that new keyboard and the freedom from being tied to a wire!

Kim, downloading a version from Blindsea.com improved the experience for
me.

They provide thorough disclosure about which versions are partially
accessible, which is the best we can hope for with that program. I've been
able to use it enough to get my work done, though. Just be prepared to use
the Jaws cursor a lot. The menu bars are accessible, which helps, and you
can access many of the primary functions like backup, update software etc
just by doing a right single click on the program from the system tray.

Spotify is a formerly exclusively European music cloud service. You can
use a free ad-based service, or subscribe for a monthly fee of $4.95 or
$9.95, depending I think on whether you want to play it on your Pc, or
your Pc plus a smartphone.

It has about 15 million songs. It doesn't have any Led Zepellin or
Beattles material yet. You can't specify anything by genre yet, at least
in the beta version.

It plays your selected music, and songs it thinks you'll like. It has the
ability to share songs with your friends either through an IM client or
Facebook. A good review is at

Not reasonably, but you can do some things with mouse emulation. But, you
can't get the free version unless you have an invitation. For what I do,
it's not worth what they want since there are other services which are
easier to use.

This is simply to mark the fifth anniversary of this list which is an
event I personally am having trouble believing. Bob and I started this out
just to see if it would go and now we boast 541 subscribers. Add in the
membership of blind computing at 375 and yes there are a lot of duplicates
but it still brings the total up to 916. Also thanks to Rick for signing
on around 6 months later after we started out. We'll keep it going so long
as we can keep up with it but as you folks can imagine it is a lot of
email to read every day. I'm so glad there are 3 of us to handle the load.
Also thanks to the membership for being orderly and for the most part
following the guidelines.

Hi Steve  Shannon;

Here you go!

The followin list of texting / email addresses were gotten from the
website

below;

http://www.emailtextmessages.com/

The following came to me from another list, hope this
answers some questions.

Chris Munoz wrote in an interesting post on Blindtech this
week. He told us how to send text messages via email. If
you don't have a text message plan, you can still send text
messages and receive replies in your email. You just need
the recipients phone number and their cell provider.

If you're friends number is 5552223113, and they are with
tmobile, send an email to:

5552223...@tmomail.net

You can add a subject and put the message in the body of the
email form.

They receive the text message and, when they reply, it comes
to your inbox. Here are the email suffixes you add to the phone numbers
for

each provider:

And of course you can always supplement your new PC in the future with an
external large capacity hard drive if you want to.

Hello Jenny.
That computer should more than fulfil your needs for the next ten years
at least! it'll take you ages to fill that huge hard drive in the new
computer!

Best wishes,
Mo.

Hello all,

I know this might be a little off topic but I need your help. The
current computer that I have was purchased in 2002 and everything still
is currently loaded on it, and I can't remember the name but I know it's
a 32 bit. All I'm purchasing is the PC, no screen, and no speakers so
another words the tower part that stores all of the information. I'll
paste the name of the new computer at the end of this message.

I need to know if this new computer will have enough memory for Jaws
version 11, Kurzweil 1000 version 11, MS word 2003, all of my microsoft
word documents (I have about 40 of them maybe more, my talking checkbook
program, PC suite latest version, internet explorer 8, outlook express
version 6.00, 250 folders in outlook express because when I get e-mail
from people I save it in the person's folder, talking CD\DVD creator
program, about 28 folders on my C drive. In my music folder I have four
folders. Mark Chesnutt's folder currently has 18 CDS' in it and soon I
will be adding his Outlaw CD (which was released June 22 for those of
you that are interested in purchasing it). Then I have a misolaneous
folder with about three CDS' in it, a George Jones folder which has two
CDS' and another folder if I remember it's George Strait and it has a
couple CDS' in it.

So another words I don't want to have to keep having to buy a new
computer every 8 years when I add music, more MS word documents,
kurzweil 1000 documentation, e-mail folders, or my third concert and
more concerts after that in my concerts folder.

Now here is the information about the computer. Thank you very much in
advance for all of your help. Have a great rest of the day.

When I saw the price of the monitor I thought it must be a typo.
At 05:51 PM 6/25/2010, you wrote:
$765 for a monitor? Do you live in the USA, because I can get the highest
end model for around $300 and that is for a 20 inch. The only one I have
seen at that price is built for Mac's.
By the way does a blind person need such monitor power? Would a adverage
flat screen monitor do?
Now as far as the ram. I have always said the more the better, but if you
can only get so much then that is what you work with. Never let your
computer leave you penny less.
And now the harddrive, it can be any size desired. Have seen windows7 on
as low as a 250 gig drive do very well and even a 64 gig ssd. So that part
is user choice.

At 09:44 PM 6/25/2010, you wrote:

I don't mean to be mean or anything, but were you looking at the same
computer I was?

If I'm not mistaken, the information said that the computer had a 320 GB
hard drive, unless I read it incorrectly.

It also had 2 GB of RAM.

This computer is going to be running Windows 7 64 bit edition, with an
NVDIA

Video card. The least you want to get in that case is at least 4 Gigs of
RAM, and the hard drive should be at least 500 gigs.

If you're paying more than 250 for that computer, I'm afraid you're
getting

ripped off.

Computer with a lot more than that are selling for 350 and 450 dollars
without a monitor, which, if you're blind, should not need one, so the
monitor should be a luxury, and besides, you can pick up a good monitor
for

765 dollars, flat screen and all.

In any case, when shopping for a computer, don't settle for the computer
that seems to be the best price out there, because, like a car, the price
tag might be great, but what's under the hood may not be.

Yes, and you can download gold wave and use it for free, you will get a help
screen and so many uses; you just restart gold wave and use it until the
time to restart.

If you get to where you want to purchase it, it is well worth it.
I've had it for about five years and really happy with it.
You can find gold wave at:

Hope this helps.

Hi Kim,

I really don't know why WinFF wouldn't work well with earlier versions of
JAWS for Windows. I haven't used Goldwave and so I am not familiar with
its
converting operations. A lot of people on this list use Goldwave, and if
it

is working for you then you might not need to change. I will leave the
program in my drop box for a couple days so feel free to download it and
try

it out if you want to. You can easily uninstall it using add/remove
programs in XP or Programs and Features in Vista or Windows 7.

Have a great rest of the long weekend!

Take care.

Hello Mike:

Yes, WinFF works with all versions of Windows from Windows 95 through and
including Windows 7. I am not sure about 64-bit Windows. I found that
there is a later version of the program than what I put a link to in my
earlier message. I have put it in my drop box folder and a link to the
newer version is shown below.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3951772/winff-1.2-setup.exe

As I mentioned in my earlier message, using the tab key in the program's
interface window moves focus between all the controls. There is a menu
bar
with a file menu, edit menu, options and help menu, but I have found that
all the controls usually needed for converting between the many audio and
video formats are easily navigated using the tab key and arrow keys. I
am

using JAWS 11 and there is only one button that is not labeled that I
found
in the interface window. It is the button for browsing to choose a
different output folder. However, in the tab order, it is located right
after the edit box where a path for the output folder can be typed and
just
before the add button. The newer version also has more choices in the
convert to box. There are now twenty-four choices in that box, and a
total of one hundred and twelve presets offered by the program. The
convert
to list includes the following:

Audio, AVI, Blackberry, Bravia, Creative Zen, DV, DVD, Google Android,
IPOD/ITunes, LG, mobile phones, MPEG4, neuros OSD, Nokia, Palm, PS3, PSP,
QuickTime, Rockbox, Tuna-Vids, VCD, Walkman, Websites and WMV. Each of
these choices have different available presets. For example, the audio
convert to choice has AC3 DVD 192kbps STEREO, ac3 DVD 384KBPS stereo,
MP3,

MPEG4 audio, OGG, WAV and WMA. The IPOD/ITunes choice in the newer
version
also has additional presets. The presets for IPOD/ITunes are iPhone wide
screen, IPOD small converted to wide screen, IPOD small full screen, IPOD
small wide screen, IPOD small wide screen anamorphic, IPOD TV Out
converted
to wide screen, IPOD TV out full screen, IPOD TV out wide screen and IPOD
TV
out wide screen anamorphic.

Hello Macky,

A small program I have used is called WinFF. It is quite simple to use
and

works well with JAWS. I don't know if it works with a 64-bit system. It

has been some time since I used it and I really don't remember the system

requirements, but it works well on the Vista 32-bit system I am using with

this computer.

The program loads with an interface that is easy to navigate using the tab

or shift+tab keystrokes. There is an add button that is identified by
JAWS

when you tab to it. Pressing spacebar on the button results in the usual

add file dialog box. You can easily find the output folder by tabbing to

where it is shown and you can browse to another output folder to use if
you

want to. If you want to use two passes in the conversion process then
there

is a checkbox for that choice, which of course will take longer. I
haven't

had any problems with the output using the single pass. There is a
convert

to combo box with twenty choices in it. The twelfth choice in the list
is

for MPEG4. If you tab once past the convert to box there is a list of

presets for the convert to choice you make. The presets for MPEG4 are MP4

full screen and MP4 wide screen. The eighth choice in the convert to

combo box is for IPOD/ITunes, and the presets for that choice are IPod

small converted to wide screen, IPod small full screen, IPod small
wide

screen, IPod small wide screen anamorphic, IPod TV out converted to wide

screen, IPod TV out full screen, IPod TV out wide screen, and IPod
TV

out anamorphic. Bitrates and frame rates

It is amazing how four part harmony could be heard from the dec-talk. It
was amazing to listen to how well those blind programmers could program
it. Though, I understand, if one knew how, programming the dec-talk to
sing or to read stories employing it's 8 different voices and pitch
changes wasn't that difficult.

If you have Jaws 11.1430, you can down load AIM, and it's accessible with
the chat feature. And you don't need to sign up with AOL either, just
choose to use your current email address, and it will import your facebook

I clicked on that graphic and the chat window would close leaving me with

Hi,

This is for Internet Explorer 7.

Go to www.facebook.com

Press Enter on the link which says, Open Chat

A new window will open. You can now choose the person you wish to talk
to.

After finding that person, press Enter on that name.
On top of the page, arrow down till you hear, View Profile.
Below it, there should be an Edit box where you can type the message.
This box is like the history window for Windows Live Messenger.
If you hear your name followed by the time stamp spoken then by the
message, you have sent that message. If your friend responds, you
should hear a Pop sound.

 Hope this method works.

JAWS says Chat and the number of people on will read after it says chat.
3.)
Route to Jaws cursor by pressing jaws key + the minus key on the number

underneath chat it may say loading at this point I usually will press
the
jaws key and the escape key at the same time this key combination
updates

the screen usually it works the first time but should it not then try it
again. So this is the instructions for opening the chat area.

Instructions for getting a chat going:
1.) scroll down with PC cursor activated to the name you want.
2.) Once you are at the name you want press enter on it.
3.) I then will pull up the jaws find using the key combination (control
+
the letter F)
4.) At this point I will type in the name of the person I am wanting to
chat
with and repeat this step until I am in the chat screen. You can find
this
out by each time you find their name scroll down a bit and see if their
is
additional information on this person such as view profile or close chat
window. another option is scroll down underneath the chat list and find
the
chat window that way.

NOTE: I have autoforms turned off using the jaws key and the letter V
and

scrolling down to where it says auto forms on. I am not sure about this
but
I believe you then press enter to toggle auto forms off if enter does
not

do
it then try pressing space bar.
  * * * With auto forms mode off I scroll down into the chat window and
listen

I realize this isn't all that important and may be considered trivial. But,
I noticed that typing hj.com will still take you to the Freedom Scientific
website. I think the hj.com stood for Hinter-Joyce the original name of
Freedom.

well I managed to find out, that the tutorials were done by Erin Edgar for
the radio show main menu. However, when I went to the main menu website,
I get an error message when I try to access the archives section. I did
listen to these tutorials by Erin when they first were made available. And
I thought I had saved them, but I cannot locate them if I did? Hopefully
Erin may read this and get back to us.

Best Christmas wishes to you
take care Jason

Hi list,
several months or so ago. A list member called Erin(I think it was),
posted a link to some tutorials she did on navigating and using Facebook
with Jaws. I am having trouble locating her tutorials. Maybe it wasn't
on this list that I read about her tutorials. But does anyone know where
I can find her or any other Facebook tutorials?

I just got a Netflix account for my family for Christmas. I also bought my
oldest daughter a Roku box to stream Netflix movies directly to her TV.

The Netflix site seems fairly easy to navigate, find and play movies on
your PC. Silverlight seems very stable and I have never noticed any
hesitation or buffering stalls yet. I have no idea if there is any way to
control the movie, such as pause, rewind or fast forward. There are no
controls visible to JAWS. Perhaps there are hotkeys available. I also
wish there were hotkeys to adjust the volume of the movie.

Thanks for any information.

usually if you send a message from your email client to a cell phone,
if they simply answer your text, it will go back to your inbox. my
daughter and i do this all the time with t-mobile. from your cell
phone, if you enter someone's email address in your address book, you
will have the option to email them using mms. it has to be mms not sms.

Once you submit an image file of a captcha to Solona, it takes less than a
minute for the operator to decode it and return the result to you. Solona
relies on a network of volunteers to serve as operators, so there is

I have a question about captias. What if you go to a site and are asked
to enter the things you hear and you go to that link to hear the audio
and it does not come up.
I went to a site and went to the link to listen to an audio captia and
nothing happened.
I went to two different sites so I think it is my computer and I don't
know what the problem is. Hope some one can answer this query.

Once you submit an image file of a captcha to Solona, it takes less
than a minute for the operator to decode it and return the result to
you. Solona relies on a network of volunteers to serve as operators,
so there is usually someone standing by most of the time.

How fast would that so-called sighted help standing by get back

In addition to Firefox with Webvisum, there is another service
called Solona that solves those nasty captchas (not captures. Visit
the Solona site to register and click on the Learn link for a
detailed explanation of how it works. Briefly, using a special tool
that you download from Solona, you create an image file of the
captcha and submit it to Solona, where a sighted human operator,
standing by, decodes it and returns it to you in text format that
you can copy and paste into the appropriate edit field.

Hi Joanne,

do the following two things to make Avast more accessible.
Configuring Avast to not use the skins for the simple user interface:
1. Start Avast.
2. Wait for the memory test to be completed, then close the web page that
appears. You should now land on a dummy check box.
3. Press the applications key to open a context menu, down arrow to
settings

and press enter. The Programme Settings dialogue box appears, with the
categories tree gaining focus.
4. Tab until you hear, enable skins for simple user interface check box
checked. Press space to uncheck it.
5. Tab to ok and press enter. You'll land back on the dummy check box.
6. Close and restart Avast. You should now be able to tab through the
controls in this programme.
Configuring JAWS to read lists in Avast:
1. Make sure that you're focused on the Avast Simple User Interface.
2. Press JAWS key 6 to open Configuration Manager.
3. Press enter to accept the New Configuration File dialogue box.
4. Press alt s to open the set options menu, then press a. The advanced
Options dialogue box appears.
5. Shift tab till you hear, Rely on MSAA for List Views check box not
checked. Press space to check it.
6. Press enter to activate the ok button.
7. Either press control s to save your configuration file immediately, or
press alt F4, pressing enter to activate the yes button on the confirm
dialogue box.
By doing these steps, you'll resolve an issue on some machines whereby
JAWS

stops speaking when focused on any of the lists in Avast.

For a complete scan, check all local disks, check archives, move the
slider
to 100% (thorough scan), and click start. For a quick scan put the slider
at

50 percent. Hope that helps. Take care.
Mike
