You should call the institution associated with your payment method and see
if they could block the transaction from their end. Just explain your
situation.
However, the ultimate solution is canceling the card you used. Of course
that could pose other problems after you did that. But at least you won't

go to a ticket form link within the email. I have tried numerous times both
ways with no success. I've tried with IE11, Chrome and Firefox. Is there a
support email address I can write to opt out or a support phone number I
can call to opt out. I do not want to be charged the $199 by the end of

Gerald,

The presence of variable will depend on what you are ordering. I selected a
DIY frame, and a combo list was presented with a style type to pick. But
regardless, I was not able to work the buttons after that.

But I did see a thread on the JFW list with a similar issue in selecting
something on the screen. Here is that solution:

To select the tick box with JAWS, simply press the bypass key, JAWS key+3
then space bar. This will tick it.

Give that a try and let us know.

On Hollar.com, there are no variables. There are no elements other than the
quantity edit field which is set to 1 by default and the add to shopping
cart button. You enter the quantity of the item you want if if it is more
than 1 and click on the button to add it to your cart. But no keystroke
will activate it with JAWS or any other screen reader.

I'm speculating that in the case where you cannot press the "Add to Cart
Button" there is some other element (checkbox, combo box, editable combo
box, edit field) that needs to be used/selected before the button will
activate. For a simple example, if the quantity edit field is blank, then a
number needs first to be entered. In other cases, I've seen where a size or
a color choice must first be selected before the button can be activated.
There are so many variables in a simple shopping app that is dependent on
the item itself, that it's hard to pin down a specific problem related to
JAWS.

Just a comment about the fact that I just went to two different websites to
purchase items and in both of them I was unable to add the item to my cart.
I am so sick of this. I can look it up and find it, but then can't get
anything to work to add to the cart. I tried three browsers and none of them
worked. I know my jaws is old, jaws 14, but honestly shouldn't something
work? Any ideas are appreciated. I know homicide is out! Judy & Libby

Hello Listers,

There used to be a gentleman By the name of Jim Flusche. Every time a new
version of windows 10 came up, he would put out ajaws users guide on how to
use jaws with windows 10 accordingly. The last one he did was on windows 10
1709 I believe. I haven't seen one for 1803. Is he no longer doing them?
I found them very helpful.

You caught me. I forgot to give feedback. Overall, I saw no discernable
improvement. The only solution that works for me is to dump JAWS and restart
(Insert+Windows+F4) whenever it starts to get cranky, then it starts working
better again.

I'm also considering purchasing RAM to double my capacity from 4G to 8G,
thinking that JAWS is becoming a memory hog, or not playing nice when
sharing space.

John,

Interesting...One thing I can do (and have just done) is to increase the
priority of the JFW process. I'm going to try running my system this way for
a while to see if anything improves.

My system is a Dell laptop with Windows 7 Pro 32-bit, dual core processor.
I'm running the latest build of JAWS 2018.

What I did was to launch the Windows Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Escape) and
Ctrl+Tab to the processes list. I arrowed down to jfw.exe and opened the
context menu. From there I selected the "set priority" menu and right-arrow
to open. JFW was set to run as normal, and I've changed it to high, waited a
bit, and then selected the set priority button after the cautionary warning.
Close Windows Task Manager with Escape.

Now let's see if JAWS behaves better with this setting. If it does, I'd sure
like to know how to have it permanently set to high priority, as I suspect
it will default to normal after a restart.

Hello Mike,
John Justice, here.
I work for the state and use configurations which are similar to the ones
you describe.

In the interest of correcting the problem, I brought it to the attention of
our upper level Access group. Their explanation doesn't solve any issues
but it might give you food for thought.

1. THE ISSUE AT HAND: apparently, what we are experiencing is the
assignment of RAM. Current versions of Jaws tend to utilize a considerable
amount of RAM, especially when changing from one software environment to
another. The result is that the system has to {wait} for enough RAM to
perform the function.
2. PROGRAM PRIORITY ASSIGNMENT: It is possible to assign certain programs
on a PC so that they have a priority when RAM is distributed. This is way
beyond my pay grade Mike but apparently, within reason, certain programs can
be allowed to operate at the expense of others, at least temporarily. There
are exceptions to this rule and certain pieces of software are assigned a
permanent top priority. I imagine that the Windows operating system might
have that kind of assignment.
3. According to our A. T. department, reassignment involves the division of
RAM into smaller compartments which then handle this function. The entire
process scares the heck out of me. It isn't something I'd want to attempt.
There might be someone on our list with more technological knowledge than I
have.
4. A WORKING SOLUTION: I am now operating two computers simultaneously.
One is dedicated to some of the functions I need while the second unit
handles primary functions. For example, I use the secondary unit to load
and display Excel spreadsheets. But even with that arrangement, certain
pieces of software will temporarily shut down Jaws until they are fully
loaded. The down time has been measured and it is usually approximately32
seconds.
5. CREATING HOTKEYS FOR RELOADING JAWS: Finally, we have established
hotkeys which can be used to encourage Jaws to restart. Occasionally,
though rarely, Jaws wil not restart after one of these incidents. We use
three key combinations which are dedicated to reactivating Jaws.

The entire thing is frustrating to say the least, Mike. But it's something
we just put up with since jaws performs so well in most other respects.

Good morning all! I'm trying to help with one of our employees here at work
on an issue where JAWS freezes unexpectedly when switching from one window
to another using the Alt Tab key. The issue is difficult to resolve because
it doesn't happen every time he switches windows. It does happen two to
three times a day on average, and is hindering his efforts to perform his
job. I have offered several solutions, but nothing has worked yet. When
JAWS freezes, he has to wait some 30 seconds before speech comes back.

I wanted to reach out to the list to see if any of you had any ideas as to
how I could minimize this behavior. I would appreciate any feedback.
Thanks very much!

are you talking about the windows live mail which has been discontinued by

the one which is never to be updated?
or are you talking about the windows mail app, with windows 10.
if it's the windows live mail,
the autofill will never work, because there's no jaws scripting, so, even
the NVDA doesn't autofill.
if your talking about the windows 10 mail app, again there's no jaws
scripting, however with the NVDA, there's a windows essentials add-on which
works well.

corrupted. The Microsoft person told me that he'd emptied auto complete, and
that if I write the first few letters and press control K, I'd get a list of
relevant addresses from which I could choose. I tried that just now with my
daughter's address and the list the control K brought up was completely
irrelevant. And I still have to paste in the correct address for the DB
Review list. David helped me upgrade to Jaws 2018 and we got rid of the to
Miriam folder,so I think that auto complete is just not going to happen,
except for the blind democracy list for some unknown reason.

There are actually 2 domains you can use to send text messages from your

Hello Mr. Ed, have you tried pressing the letter for edit? Usually that is
what I do to find an edit field with jaws.

Hi Darra,
This happens on many computers running W10 with Jaws. It happens on my
computer also. What you can do is press ctrl + windows key + enter to turn
on narrator and then arrow around until you find the edit box to enter your
pin number. This does work for me most of the time when my computer does not
bring up the edit field for the pin number.

Hi All,

The other day I called VFO / Freedom Scientific to see if they had any new
financial plans for people that had gotten way behind because of financial
difficulties, & wanted to get upgraded / updated to the latest version.
Well, to my surprise what I found out was absolutely fantastic! A friend
needed to be updated because he was at Jaws 11 & he needed to be upgraded
to
be compatible with the Windows 7 system he is moving to from XP. Okay to
cut this short, I found out people can be upgraded from Jaws 11 to
Jaws2018
for $200.00. The lady I talked to was a Window Eyes transplanted employee
&
she didn't know how long this financial plan had been in place. So for
all
you that need to be upgraded but have financial difficulty, don't be
afraid
to call & inquire about new financial / payment plans! This $200.00 plan
is
only for the Home versions.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Problem installing JAWS 18 on a Windows 7 machine.

2018-02-27 Thread T. Civitello
Be happy that the so called software engineer didn't do a repair on Windows.
My Windows 7 Update was stuck and they spent a couples hours fooling around
inside the computer and finally escalated it to and engineer who spent most
of two days fooling around while I sat and listened to Jaws telling me what
was going on. He finally got the repair and Windows update working but he
messed up a lot of other things, can't remember all of them. I finally hired
someone to wipe the hard drive and re-install Windows 7. Things have been
pretty good for several months now except for problems with IE 11 which I
believe are caused by Jaws 18, I am running the same IE and Jaws on a Win 10
pc and things are much smoother there . Tom

The first time Windows update failed to install, I had to hire someone who
knew what he was doing to manually install the update. I'd first contacted
MS Accessibility. After an hour, they gave up and escalated. However, I
didn't get any follow-up until this past Sunday, more than a month later. By
then, the initial failure had been resolved. However, it's just happened
again. I haven't decided what to do. In the past, MS Accessibility was going
to solve another problem by reinstalling windows, which seemed to me much to
dramatic. In that case, too, I turned instead to an expert who made the fix
without trauma to my system, although some to my bank account.

I wish I had more confidence in MS Accessibility. For certain relatively
minor things, I'm guessing they're fine, but for anything complex, you
really need to monitor what they're up to. In addition, letting a month
elapse before acting on an escalated matter, especially when security is
involved, was unconscionable.

The short answer is that I have no idea how to solve this recurring Windows
update failure by myself. If someone on this list does, we'd owe them a free
subscription!!

It doesn't sound like everybody is reporting this IE issue.

Still, it makes sense to accustom oneself to moving away from IE. I know it
has some decent features, but it's increasingly ineffective and unusable on
some websites. I don't know when security updates for it will stop ..
probably not til 2020 as that's when Windows 7 support ends ... but still.

Firefox 52 ESR is currently the thing to get if you are wanting to use FF
and JAWS. It works without any issues. There has been some difficulty in
adapting JAWS to Firefox Quantum, but they are working on it. You could also
use NVDA. Really, nowadays it makes sense to have both screen-readers on
your machine.

[JAWS-Users] Search and replace fonts in word 2010

Hi

I'm using word 2010 and jaws 2018.

I'm trying to search and replace fonts in a document and can't get the
font options to appear so I can select the appropriate names to search
and replace.

I press control h, then the more button. I press enter on format and can
arrow up and down the available format options. When I try pressing
enter on font, nothing else happens. At this point, I believe I should
get a list of fonts to choose from for the search box, then repeat the
same process for the replace box.

Can anyone tell me how to get this to work using Jaws or else, tell me
the correct string to type in the search and replace boxes?

Thanks for your help.

was to highlight the message field and then tell Jaws to read the highlighted
text. This would be OK except there was a link in the message that I wanted to
use. Anyone know what is going on here. the messages were from Costco

Hello:

This week, I'm noticing jaws just randomly freezes on me. I could be reading
an email, surfing the web, writing in word, yelling at the dog, and poof it
would just stop working.

I would do the jaws dump command and then try to bring it back with the
hotkey but it doesn't come back up, unless I reboot. Thoughts?

Go into quick settings with JAWS key+v, then arrow down to "Select and copy
from full screen." Then press spacebar to switch to " from virtual cursor."
Tab to okay.
The default is to display a webpage more or less as it appears on the
screen. The "virtual cursor" gives JAWS greater precision so that when you
select text, it selects the text you intend.

Hey group,

All of a sudden Windows Defender is preventing installation of programs
which I have downloaded from the Jaws Users site. I've looked through
Defender and I'm not sure if there is something in there I need to change or
what I can do to resolve this issue. I'm using Windows 10, not sure of the

assist me in correcting this very odd behavior I would really appreciate it.

Re: [JAWS-Users] windows live mail account not working

2018-01-01 Thread andy t
Hello Kimsan, when you changed your password, did you change it on
the AOL server or did you just change it in WLM? now if you changed it

in both places when this dialog appears just press the escape key.
I know for a fact that all my passwords are correct in both my server and in
the WLM program but I get the same thing some times several times a
day and then again I could go for a week or two and never have an issue also
I have had to dis connect my router for a minute and re connect it and it
works well with no issues.
I have also found another problem, sometime my WLM won't send any messages
and what I do there is close the program and re open it and it works
correctly.
I suppose this is caused by Microsoft no longer supporting the program and
because we are using it in windows 10 it may not function in windows

10 after the next update but we will have to wait and see.

Two answers, one a JAWS and the other a Microsoft method.

I don't know if this worked in JAWS 14, but with current versions:
To mark the beginning of the passage you want to select, press
control+Windows-key+k

Navigate to the place where you wish the selection to end.
Press JAWS key+spacebar, release and pause, then the letter m.
Then take the action you want to perform, such as pressing control+c for
copy.

If that option isn't available to you as a JAWS 14 user, here are the
non-JAWS instructions for performing this task. I got them from

http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/how-to-select-and-deselect-blocks-of-text-in-word-.html
1. Position the insertion pointer at the start of the block of text.
2. Press the F8 key.
The F8 key drops anchor and marks one end of the block.
3. Use the keyboard's cursor keys to select the block of text.
Press a letter key to select text up to and including that letter. If you
press N, you select all text up to and including the next N in your
document.
Word highlights text from the point where you dropped anchor with F8 to
wherever you move the insertion pointer.

4. Do something with the selected block of text.
Word remains in extended selection mode until you do something with the
block.
To cancel the extended selection, press the Esc key. That action ends
extended selection mode and keeps the block of text marked.

Could you let us know which version of windows live mail you are using? To
do this, with windows live mail open, press insert + ctrl + v (assuming
you're using desktop layout). The only important bit is the number before
the point, which will be something like 12, 14, or 15.

Hi,
I presume that you mean that the menu bar is hidden. To show the menu bar:
1. Press alt + M to press a menu button on the toolbar. A menu opens.
2. On the menu find "show menu bar" and press Enter. Note that if you find
"hide menu bar" rather than "show menu bar", then the menu bar is in fact
being shown, and there must be another problem.

1. Open the, View Menu, if you can.
2. Navigate to, Layout..., if you have this option & press enter.
3. Tab to, Toolbars, & check it, then tab to, Okay, & press enter.
Now see if your WLM toolbars are back.

Hello,
Keep in mind, Windows 7 is only one version away from Vista and Vista is
considered a fossil at this point. In training clients, it is unfortunate to
have clients who have held on to old technology until the point that their
skills start to become antiquated and dated. Technology is like a steam
roller, if we don't stay ahead of it, it will run us right over without a
second thought.
When I hear people talking about old OS operating systems, they might as
well be talking about XP. Sorry to sound perhaps rough, but with all of the
updates to 10, 7 is pretty much like XP at this point. Microsoft has already
warned users that the security architecture for Windows 7 is extremely
vulnerable and open to many types of risks, and they dropped a significant
amount of support for it back in 2013. It will lose all support in 2020 and
if one is using Windows 7 or Internet Explorer, you are falling behind the
train.
I am not trying to start a debate, and hope that my words don't come across
as combative, just putting this out there so it doesn't come back to be a
thorn in anyone's side.

This is because the underlying technology is only available on Windows 8 and

in security maintenance mode at this time).

[JAWS-Users] Jaws 2018 sluggishness on internet

2017-11-26 Thread T. Civitello
Jaws 2018 sluggishness on internet

Don’t know if sluggishness is quite right for what has been occurring with
Jaws 2018 and Windows 7 on the internet. I have been visiting the Epson, Amazon
and Staples Web sites the last few days and whenever you click on a link Jaws
goes silent for 15 or 20 seconds before resuming speech. Sometimes I have to
tab away from the page to get Jaws talking again. I think this started with
2018. We also have a pc running Windows 10 and Jaws 2018 and it does not have
this problem. Anyone know what is going on with this issue? Tom

Easy way is to copy it into a blank Notepad document and then back into a

Hi Tom

It used to be recommended not to install older versions after newer versions
were installed. I can't tell you why this is, only that this was what I was
told by FS tech support several years ago. If you uninstall J2018, make
sure to leave shared components & settings. You can try installing J17
first, & if everything works out just fine, then don't worry about removing
2018. What kind of problems are you having with IE11 & J2018?
Take care. Mike. Dodgers, try again next year!

Hi Tom,

First, which version of Windows are you running? If you're running Windows
7 you're using the wrong keystroke to open the Task Manager. If you run
Jaws from the system tray it won't show in the list of running programs,
Insert + F10. Press, Insert + F11, & see if it's in the system tray. When
you open the Task Manager for Windows 7, Control, Shift, + Escape, which Tab
are you looking at? There are 5 Tabs in the Task Manager: Applications,
Processes, Services, Performance, & Networking. If Jaws is running it
should show in more than 1 of the tabs, but check the Applications tab, & if
Jaws is running & it isn't showing here, someone else needs to give you more
help because I sure as hell don't know what to tell you at that point. LOL

Someone sent the info about that a while ago and it's become a keystroke I
use a lot. Put the cursor at the top of the first page and hit
control+windows key+k. that marks the spot. Then, go to the end of the last
page you want and hit jaws key+spacebar, then the letter m. Jaws will say
"selecting between marked places" or something like that. you can then copy
and paste, delete, or whatever you want to do with that block.

It also works on the internet which is very useful at times! Karen

Hello, to get jaws to read punctuations you need to go to the jaws settings
sinter by pressing jaws key plus the
number 6 then press control plus shift plus d at the same time then go down
to punctuations and press the right arrow to open it there are two things in
there the first is customize ... don't do anything there down arrow to the
next one that says punctuations press the space bar until jaws says some
then press alt to get out of there and press

ok to save the setting and it should work correctly.

Mike, on my system, the "dot" is pronounced. I'm also using JAWS 18, but
it's been consistently this way as long as I remember. I wonder if a
punctuation setting is involved. I'll think about it, but I'm sure others

If I type a Yahoo email address, or a gmail address or even a edu address,
all I get is yahoo com, edu, org, but it doesn't pronounce the (dot) portion
of the email or web address. This can easily throw someone off, because if
you're dealing with lots of email addresses, it can be hard for someone to
tell them apart.
I looked in the startup wizard of Jaws, but it didn't seem to have any
information regarding how this type of information is read or how to adjust
it. Fortunately, I have a backup screen reader in addition to Jaws.
Window-eyes seems to be the only screen reader that will actually read this
info correctly. Hopefully they'll fix this in a future upgrade of Jaws. I'm
currently using version 18.

The reason that I am trying to turn this feature off is that
Freedomscientific technician told me that OCR and a couple of other
features has to be uninstalled for my computer to allow the 2018 beta
to be installed. When I go to programs and features jaws tells me
that overlay windows has to first be turned off. I have not been able
to do this. I guess I will have to call freedomscientific again for
help.

Hi Fred,

I also have this always on top window on the JAWS Task List.
I am sure this is JAWS-RELATED, because I could check it by pressing
INSERT+Q after switching to this window from the JTL. I think this is
INSERT+for
the Virtual Cursor image on the screen which was introduced a few JAWS
18 updates ago, but Im not sure.

I am using win 10 and latest jaws 18. When I press insert plus F10 to
bring up the Windows list dialogue jaws says overlay windows zero on
top and I would appreciate it if someone could tell me what overlay
windows is and how to close it or remove it. So far I haven't been
able to do anything with it.

Thanks much,

Hello Mr.Ed I also downloaded the latest jaws 18 yesterday and I checked my
downloads folder before I wrote this message and I don't have this file, my
first guess is that maybe it has something to do with jaws settings.

I don't even think I would worry about it.

Greg,

I'm sure you're right. To the extent I understand anything about PDF files,
they need to be properly tagged. What I do in order to get the information I
need from untagged financial statements is to figure out what exactly that
is. Typically, it's the amount due and the list of transactions, if any. I
go directly to the amount due by searching for the $ dollar sign.

If I want to read the transactions, I search for a portion of a date. For
example, if the statement has a closing date in mid-September, I'll search
for the two characters

9/
Since the most recent, and therefore top, transaction probably occurred in
September. Naturally if 9/ doesn't work, I substitute 8/.

Note. To search in a PDF document, press JAWS key+control+f.

I realize this is a workaround, but perhaps it's helpful.

Fernando,
Thanks so much for responding. Unfortunately neither Control+page down or
control+shift+n works on the document I am trying to read. Perhaps it’s the
way the document was created that is causing the problem. The document is a
monthly statement downloaded from my credit card web site. Iam using adobe
acrobat reader DC.

Hi Greg,

To go to the next or prior page, press CTRL+PAGE DOWN or CTRL+PAGE UP. To
enter a specific page number, press CTRL+SHIFT+N, type the number and press
ENTER.

I downloaded a 4 page pdf document and cannot figure out how to change the
pages so I can read pages 2,3 and 4. Step by step instructions would be
greatly appreciated. I am using latest Jaws 18 on a Windows 10 computer.

Any of the netgear routers, and the later dLink routers work well.

Make sure you get one with a more current standard; at least 802.1.N or if
you can afford it, 802.1.AC.

Try putting in the way to say Duluth the following:
Dul uth
Note I broke the word into two syllables as dul and uth
Play with the way the word is spoken. Probably other options such as
Da luth

When trying to define the proper pronunciation for a word in the JAWS 18

accent?

I'm trying to get JAWS to pronounce Duluth properly. The accent should be on
the second syllable. JAWS wants to put it on the first syllable.
Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks,
