Re: [JAWS-Users] Safe To Remove Hardware Message, Possible Fix

2018-06-05 Thread Mike B.
Hi Sharon,

Well, I went to check my Windows 10computer, and I don't have that showing
any more either! LOL Beats the heck out of me where it went, but below are
the steps I used to make Jaws report the safe to remove message. I know the
steps below work in Windows 10 Pro, but I don't know if they'll work in
other versions of Windows 10. Thanks again to, Fernando, for the steps
below:

From: Fernando Gregoire
Hi Mike and all,

If the confirmation message appears on the screen but JAWS is not saying it,
perhaps it's helpful to know that in Windows 10 balloons was replaced with
toasts, which like notifications in the Action Center are handled by the
ShellExperienceHost process, too unstable like most UWP apps and areas,
unfortunately increasing.
JAWS 17 and newer have a verbosity setting concerning Windows 10
notifications, but it is not as accurate as balloon reading, which was being
developed since Windows XP.
If you have Windows 10 Pro, there's a group policy which allows to use
balloons instead of new toast notifications. Try the steps below:

1. Press WINDOWS+R, type the following and then press ENTER:

gpedit.msc

2. In the Tree view arrow down to, User Configuration, right arrow to open,
down arrow to, Administrative Templates, right arrow to open, down arrow to,
Start Menu and Taskbar.

3. When you reach Start Menu and Taskbar, tab to the list view. In the list
view, find the following policy:

Disable showing balloon notifications as toasts

4. Press ENTER to open the properties of this policy, tab to the group of
radio buttons and change from, Not Configured, to, Enabled, tab to, Okay,
and press enter.
5. When finished, restart the computer for this change to take effect.

By the way, File Explorer and other system and third-party apps which
previously shown balloons will do that exactly as in prior Windows versions,
including JAWS ability to simulate a left mouse click.

Hope it helps!
Fernando

Hi, I have just gone through your instructions and can't find the last
option. There is nothing in my task bar options that sounds at all like what
you have suggested. I have been having the same problem as you with the
reporting of safe to remove. This is on my acer laptop and work computer
both running latest Jaws and windows ten.

Thanks.

Hi Again All,

Okay, by doing the following Jaws will report the safe to remove message,
although not consistently. I knew I had a note about this somewhere because
this also happens in Widows 7, and this is how I fixed it:
1. Windows key + I, to open Settings, Navigate to Personalization, and press
enter.
2. Go to, Taskbar, press enter, tab to, Notification Area, Select which
icons appear on the taskbar Link, and press enter.
3. Tab to, Windows host process (Rundll32) Button, press the spacebar to
check this option, and you should now hear Jaws report it's safe to
remove after pressing enter on a drive from the Safely Remove Hardware
icon.

Please let me know if the steps work for anyone else.
Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

I'm glad this worked for you.
It would be nice to know the exact Registry key created or modified by this

advanced ones, does not have the Group Policy Editor. Unfortunately I have no

Hi David,

I'm playing a spoken notification sound that Rick made for another
operating system playing, but if Jaws reported the message I would still
hear Jaws reporting. Although Jaws doesn't report, the process is
completed, and you can tell because the Safely Remove icon disappears from
the system tray and the particular drive disappears from the list of drives.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Safe To Remove Hardware Message

2018-05-26 Thread Scorpio
Not sure what version of Jaws you're running, but using Windows 10, version
1709 and the latest version of Jaws 2018, I always get the announcement the
drive is safe to remove.

Not sure if verbosity settings would affect receiving this message, but my
computer is over 12 years old, and if I'm still getting the safe to remove
message, with my verbosity levels set to medium, then everyone else's should
be getting it too, but again, I don't know what's it's like for advanced
verbosity users, so take what i said with a grain of salt.

It could also be that you're interrupting speech before you can hear the
message, because, as I said, I always get it, without fail.

Hello Mike.
I'm running Windows 10, 1803, with JAWS 2018, May update.
I recently noticed that when I go to the system tray to remove a drive, I no
longer receive the message that it's safe to remove the drive.
Another friend called me yesterday with the same issue. I just assume that
it's safe. If I go back to the system tray before removing the drive, the
option to remove it shows as unavailable, as it should.
I don't know how to capture or replay those fleeting messages with JAWS. If
I virtualize the window, JAWS says there's no text. I haven't had a sighted
person look at the screen.
I can use the context menu on the drive, but again, I get no spoken message.
On another matter, has anyone else seen multiple copies of JAWS shown in the
system tray after JAWS was shut down and restarted? Shouldn't JAWS be
removed if it's shut down. This happens with both insert-f4 and
insert-windows-f4. Sometimes my save as menu won't work in Word. If I shut
JAWS down and bring it back, the menu reads as it should.
I much prefer running JAWS from the system tray, so that it won't be in the
alt-tab line up.
Sorry I don't have an answer for you, and maybe a lot of us, about
disappeared messages. Smile.

Do you hear a double tone after hitting the safely remove hardware icon? If
so then I believe it is safe to go ahead and eject the drive.

2018-05-26 Thread Rebecca Lineberger
I have all icons set to display in the system tray. The safely remove
hardware and eject media is always there, whether I have a drive inserted or
not.
And Adrian, I turned JAWS off from the system tray, and then turned it back
on. All the extra JAWS icons disappeared. I did try several of the icons,
and they all were active, allowing me to exit JAWS.

Hi Adrian,

Like you I want the extra confirmation, but although Jaws doesn't report the
message consistently any more the removal process is being completed. When
the removal process is completed the Safely Remove icon disappears from the
system tray unless you have more than 1 external drive running which I'm
prone to do. But, let's say you have 3 external drives running and their
drive letters are L, M, & N. You want to remove drive M, you open the
Safely Remove from the system tray, choose driveM, and press enter. Now,
Jaws doesn't report the drive is safe to remove, but if you look in,
Computer, driveM won't be showing which means it's safe to remove.

If you're only running 1 external drive, after you choose it from the Safely
Remove icon, and Jaws doesn't report it to be safe to remove, look in,
Computer, and if you don't see it in the drive list it's safe to remove.

Mike, just a thought. Before going to the system tray, do you close the
window displaying that drive's contents? Then does the confirmation show up
in the system tray?

A related point: My tech consultant says that removing an item, such as an
SD card, can be done safely so long as the window is closed. He'd say, then,
that even if you aren't getting that reassuring confirmation, you'll be
okay. Even so, I admit I take the extra precaution of getting system tray
confirmation.

Hi Rebecca,

Thank you for your reply. Would you try the steps below to see if they'll
work for you?
Okay, by doing the following Jaws will report the safe to remove message,
although not consistently. I knew I had a note about this somewhere because
this also happens in Widows 7, and this is how I fixed it:
1. Windows key + I, to open Settings, Navigate to Personalization, and press
enter.
2. Go to, Taskbar, press enter, tab to, Notification Area, Select which
icons appear on the taskbar Link, and press enter.
3. Tab to, Windows host process (Rundll32) Button, press the spacebar to
check this option, and you should now hear Jaws report it's safe to
remove after pressing enter on a drive from the Safely Remove Hardware
icon.

Rebecca, if I understand one of your points correctly, you can replay JAWS
verbalizations by pressing JAWS key+spacebar, then separately h. Wait a few
moments, then arrow down through the text. Press escape to get out of the

As for those JAWS icons in the system tray, yes, one appears each time you
unload and reload JAWS. However, only one will bring up the JAWS window.
Click on the others and the icon disappears. Which one is the active one?

Hi All,

Running Widows 10 Pro Version 1803 (OS Build 17134.81) with Jaws 16 thru
J2018 latest. Whenever I want to eject / remove an external harddrive I
click on the system tray icon, choose the device, and press enter on it,
but
Jaws doesn't report the following:

Safe To Remove Hardware: The 'USB Mass Storage Device' device can now be
safely removed from the computer.

Can anyone tell me how to get Jaws to report the message above? Or, what
setting is supposed to be activated to report the message above? All help
will be greatly appreciated. Thanks mooy moocho.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Safe To Remove Hardware Message

2018-05-26 Thread George Martinez Sr
I have the same configuration as Rebecca.
This week I had a similar issue with a 16gb SD card. I heard a message
about damage but it always disappeared before I could get to it
It still worked in my Victor Stream but when I put it back in the reader I
received the same damage message and could not access it to tell Windows to
fix it. This time I went to This Computer and entered on the drive letter
and it showed NO files & I knew I had 2 books on there.
Finally, today, in frustration, I went by & picked up another SD card and it
works fine for now, transferred 2 new biographies onto it and they are
reading fine.
I am going to try to choose the format option on the old SD card and see if
I get the card back and can use it for a backup.

Smile.

Rebecca, if I understand one of your points correctly, you can replay JAWS
verbalizations by pressing JAWS key+spacebar, then separately h. Wait a few
moments, then arrow down through the text. Press escape to get out of the
window.
As for those JAWS icons in the system tray, yes, one appears each time you
unload and reload JAWS. However, only one will bring up the JAWS window. Click
on the others and the icon disappears. Which one is the active one? I'm not
sure there's a pattern.

2018-05-26 Thread Adrian Spratt
Mike, just a thought. Before going to the system tray, do you close the window
displaying that drive's contents? Then does the confirmation show up in the
system tray?

A related point: My tech consultant says that removing an item, such as an SD
card, can be done safely so long as the window is closed. He'd say, then, that
even if you aren't getting that reassuring confirmation, you'll be okay. Even
so, I admit I take the extra precaution of getting system tray confirmation.

2018-05-26 Thread Mike B.
Hi All,

Running Widows 10 Pro Version 1803 (OS Build 17134.81) with Jaws 16 thru
J2018 latest. Whenever I want to eject / remove an external harddrive I
click on the system tray icon, choose the device, and press enter on it, but
Jaws doesn't report the following:

Safe To Remove Hardware: The 'USB Mass Storage Device' device can now be
safely removed from the computer.

Can anyone tell me how to get Jaws to report the message above? Or, what
setting is supposed to be activated to report the message above? All help
will be greatly appreciated. Thanks mooy moocho.

Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!
