Note that all these commands are Windows, not screenreader, commands, except to
the extent that JAWS uses the numpad to duplicate certain keys.

Hi Tom,

Take a look at the following:
Selecting / Highlighing text

Selecting a letter/character; Shift +left arrow selects prior character.
Shift + right arrow selects next character.

Selecting prior word; Insert/Jaws key, shift + left arrow or control, shift, +
left arrow.

Selecting next word; Insert/Jaws key, shift, + right arrow or control, shift,
+ right arrow.

Selecting text from cursor to beginning of line; Shift + Home/7 key on number
pad.

Selecting text from cursor to end of line; Shift +End/1 on the number pad.

Selecting text from cursor to the end of a document; Control, shift, +
end/1 key on the number pad.

Selecting text from cursor to the beginning of a document; Control, shift,
+ home/7 key on the number pad.

Selecting more than 1 line of text; Hold the Shift key down while arrowing up
or down until you have selected/highlighted the lines you want.

Selecting all text; Control + A. This keystroke will select all the text in a
document no matter the size or length of the document.

In fact, the Windows key is employed with a number of fantastic JAWS
keystrokes. One which I have come to use on an hourly basis is control plus
windows plus k to mark a spot in a word document.
One may later jump back to that spot instantly with just windows plus k;
however, even more cool is the ability, in Word, to mark text from your cursor
to the marked spot, and it doesn't matter whether, in the document, your cursor
is ahead of the marked spot or behind it or whether it is 4 words or 40 pages
away. You mark text back to the marked spot with JAWS key plus space bar and
then m.
Then, you can use control c to copy or control x to cut or windows c to append.
Try it! You'll like it!

Is there a comparable hot key for extended text selection as in other screen
readers. That is, so one can press Read To End or the PGDN and PGDN to rapidly
select larger blocks of text, especially in HTML environments?

Hi Mike,

This is what the Word 2002 context help for it (shift+F1, then F8),
says:

Extend Selection
Turns extend mode on or off. In extend mode (EXT
appears on the status bar), you can extend the
selection using the arrow keys.

So, in essence, that's how it should work. You may need to look through
the tabs in Tools | Options, or else I don't know.

Troubleshoot selecting text

When I click the mouse or press a key, Microsoft Word automatically
selects text.

You may have turned on Extend Selection mode, which allows you to select
text by clicking the mouse or pressing navigation keys. When this mode
is active,
the letters EXT appear on the status bar. To cancel Extend Selection
mode, press ESC, and then click anywhere in your document.

[JAWS-Users] text selection mode

2009-09-18 Thread Kimsan
I have a question concerning text selection mode in word.

If memory serves me correctly, when pressing the function key eight, it
will take you into text selection mode and you can select word, sentence,
paragraph or document.

So, my question are as follows.

1.. In order to use this am I needing to have it set at printview? (or
does that matter)
2.. Does the sentence need to have periods or some sort of punctuation?
I asked this because I was at another computer today, I believe it was an
IBM laptop and when I did function key eight, it said, word, paragraph and
document.
How come there wasn't an option for sentence?

Kimsan,

If the sentence does not have a period to end it, how is Microsoft word
to know that there really is a sentence? It doesn't matter the view
that's set: Selection Mode should work just as well.
