Re: [JAWS-Users] Toshiba laptop
My husband had a Toshiba like that, and I put a velcro dot the size of the sensor so he wouldn't accidentally touch it. This was in 2007, and we have had Toshibas ever since, and the mute key seems to be the F12 on the ones we have had so far. Right. here's a question. I think the answer may be No, but i'll ask anyway. In several of the JAWS keystrokes, it's necessary on the Toshiba by default to also use the FN key, or the keystroke won't work. Can this be changed so that we don't have to use the FN key (in conjunction with - for example - the capslock or Insert, and F4 keys) when, say, unloading JAWS? or again those modifier keys with F7 when bringing up the list of links dialogue? - Original Message - From: Tim Bennett tbennett2...@comcast.net To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Tuesday, November 06, 2012 4:06 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Append To Clipboard Keystroke In Jaws 14 Works pretty well using the laptop layour. windows + caps lock + c -- Tim Bennett Indianapolis, IN For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/ For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

With all the laptops I work on and have laying around here. The FN key has only ben used with the F1 to F12 keys. Some laptops will let you change this in the BIOS or within special settings through brand named software of the laptop. So the F1 to F12 act as they should normally. Never heard it being used with jaws keys. At 11:22 AM 11/6/2012, you wrote: Right. here's a question. I think the answer may be No, but i'll ask anyway. Re: [JAWS-Users] Toshiba Laptop layout
Hi Flor, You'll need sighted assistance for this, but you can fix this function in the BIOS screen of your computer. When the computer is booting up, you'll notice a message scroll across the screen that says press this key to enter set-up. It can range from F2 to F11, or even the left shift key on one laptop I worked on, but, cone it goes into the BIOS set-up, go into the function key settings, and switch them back to their default values. Laptop manufacturers changed this around with increased user demand for toggle keys for monitors and screen size, and sound volume, since most laptops are used for business purposes, and most business professionals use their laptops for giving presentations and the like, the added convenience of being able to switch from the on-board monitor to the external screen or projector was a God send for them, regardless of how inconvenient it was for us blind folks. In any case, once you're done changing the function key settings, make sure you save and exit the set-up. Do not exit without saving the configuration, or all you've done will be for nothing. Hope this helps. Scorpio For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Re: [JAWS-Users] Toshiba Laptop layout
Hi, That's about making the FN key sticky by checking the checkbox. (In my laptop it is already ' turned on' - as we would understand the terms - and as I have indicated; but unhchecked). Checking it makes the key sticky, and makes it make a soundd when pressed. You may then customize how long it remains sticky, etc. but unchecking it does not turn off FN as such. Connecting another keyboard does. I think we must go to the BIOS or startup etc, for turning off FN functionality on the native keyboard, as Scorpio has indicated. there's nothing referring to it in the Windows Mobility Center. - Original Message - From: david davidwhitehead1...@cogeco.ca To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Tuesday, November 06, 2012 10:46 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Toshiba Laptop layout hello; well, I found a web site which gives directions to turn on the fn key, I'm wondering if the same instructions won't allow you to do the oppisit. http://www.ehow.com/how_6808961_turn-function-key-toshiba.html -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of david Sent: Tuesday, November 6, 2012 2:41 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Toshiba Laptop layout hello there; are you using windows 7? if so, I would check to see if, you can't make this change in the mobility center. if you press windows key+x, this should bring up the windows mobility center. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Flor Lynch Sent: Tuesday, November 6, 2012 8:22 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Toshiba Laptop layout Right. here's a question. Most likely this is not the most recent version of JAWS 11. When I am typing or navigating with the arrow keys or the tab key, the JAWS volume fades out. Does anyone have any ideas why this is happenning, and how to fix it? Re: [JAWS-Users] Toshiba laptop FN keys
Yes I understand that, but I couldn't find it in there. Patti Your laptop manual will have a list of the Fn keys. These keys have different functions with different manufacturers. Patti Thanks Cesar and other on this list who offered ideas on how to resolve my JAWS issues on my new computer. After much experimentation, we figured out that the problem was a little check box called Sounds Effects that needed to be unchecked. I will most likely install JAWS 12 and switch over to Laptop Keyboard layout. Thanks again! Annette, try updating your sound card driver. If after the update the problem is still there, install the latest version of Jaws 12 even in demo mode only. and see if the same problem occurs. Sorry, I cant give you a better solution since I have not experience this problem. How long have you had your Toshiba M645-4070? Did you find the touch sensitive media keys above the keyboard to be a problem? I did, and was able to work with Toshiba Technical support to turn them off. Now I am trying to learn the Function key commands to do those same tasks. Do you use JAWS with the Laptop Keyboard setting or the Desktop setting? I've always used Desktop on every other laptop I've owned, but finding it impossible so far on this one. The embedded numpad does not allow for the arrow keys and the other keys so that I can execute the various JAWS reading commands. Any suggestions? You can get on-line or pdf manuals for your laptop, http://www.Toshiba.com Just look under support. They also list shortcut keys and tips.
