If this is enabled then when you shut your computer down it doesn't really shut down, but it goes into a hibernated state that allows the computer to wake-up & install updates, run security scans, & whatever the Widows 10 system is supposed to do in this state. These tasks are all scheduled and designed to do their thing when your computer is not being used. But, if Fast Start is disabled it can't do these scheduled tasks. So, in your case if Fast Start is not turned on in can't wake-up to install the updates and you would have to do them manually. If you have Fast Start enabled and the updates aren't being installed there might be an error code message somewhere which explains why. if you do a search using the error code number as your search criteria. Try using Windows-X and then arrowing up to the shutdown options. See if you get a different result by doing: Control+Alt+Delete Use up or down arrow to navigate to Power and press enter. Down arrow to update and shutdown. If all else fails, call Microsoft disability support.
