Julian, Getting the contents from an IFrame served from the same domain works fine. The security only kicks in for x-domain content. IIRC, sub-domains can also be made to work if all pages involved set the same document.domain But back to the OP, your iframe can deal with scrolling itself if you set its size in the containing page, and that you can do cross-domain.
