[kdelibs] [Bug 364321] No ability to switch from JEDEC to SI units in Plasma 5.x (KDE Frameworks Version : 5.22.0 / Qt 5.6.0)

2016-06-14 Thread Tim LePés via KDE Bugzilla
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=364321

Eh... maybe I misunderstood this? I like having preference to default to IEC
versus SI units. But using the JEDEC names for base-2 units conflicts with the
SI names (base-10) and causes confusion. Maybe if someone really wants that as
a choice, they can make their case. Personally I like using the IEC units
because they make it easier for me to think about how hard disk and memory
match up. So I am voting for the choice to use those over SI units. I have a
harder time understanding why someone would want to use the JEDEC names for the
base-2 units, as that would just bring back confusion. IEC names cover base-2
just fine. But... to each their own. Sorry for opinion spamming

Using Kdenlive 16.04 on Ubuntu 16.04
Dell Inspiron Series 15 5559
Dual boot Windows10/Ubuntu 16.04 recently setup
Video editing – music videos
Being mindful of keeping big files on ext hdd
Had a few messages saying run out of space so emptied trash and moved stuff off
site
Not sure if I need to make more space on partition for this
HDD has been operating quite noisily since using Ubuntu on dual boot last two
or three days
Noticed a warning re checksum or whatever not matching in all the terminal
printout during first install but it turned itself off before I could capture
it.
I did a reinstall tonight just using sudo apt-get install kdenlive and it
re-installed itself, added some new stuff and asked me to delete some stuff.
Been using it solidly for last 36 hours to render effects on a single clip as I
get to know the software. Keeping them small but many 10+ min renders.

[kdenlive] [Bug 364324] git master 2016-06-14 Sub-grouping is not preserved

2016-06-14 Thread Evert Vorster via KDE Bugzilla
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=364324

Thanks for fixing the selection going away on a drag.

However, sub-groups are still not preserved.
In an application like Inkscape, you can group groups, and when ungrouping, the
original groupings are preserved.

This would be a good thing to have in Kdenlive.

I say give people their preference. Arguing about which is "better" and why is
really just about opinion, and use case, and not likely to be productive.
Some of us have been using computers since before SI units became common. The
reason 1024 was used in the first place is because it matches the realities of
the hardware. Computers work in powers of 2 (base 2). You still get base-2
values when buying memory chips, for instance. It just makes sense.

Hard disk manufacturers, as a notable example, started using the SI units
(base-10) because of marketing, not because it helped users. You could sell a
gigabyte hard disk even though it was really somewhat short from the
traditional "gigabyte" people were used to. Lots of eople were initially upset
by this, wondering where their other 73,741,824 bytes per "gigabyte" went. It
can be argued that using the traditional base-2 measurements made more sense,
since you could easily equate the valuses between your temporary (RAM) and
permanenet (disk) storage. The name changes were the main source of confusion.
I still think "gibibyte" sounds stupid, since I grew up calling it "giga-",
not "gibi"-. But I'm not about to fight for the naming prefix. We have
discreet names for each that are now well understood. It was pretty confusing
for a lot of people used to the old names. But we've had time to get over the
name change.

I can see where the SI units make sense, especially from a non-technical
perspective. They match up with people's expectations from the world of metric
units. Fine. I would say that programs should use the current convention of
KiB and kB, MiB and MB, GiB and GB, so as to be specific about what is meant.
But, still, give people the option to prefere the base-2 or base-10 unit
representations for files and such as they prefer. Personal opinions about
which makes sense "universally" are merely subjective. There are lots of
reasons some may want to default to units that make sense for them. So let
them.

Very similar symptoms here, on a fresh install of Kubuntu 16.04.

On this occasion, plasma crashed when I clicked on the panel to restore
Firefox. Other times, it crashes randomly when the mouse moves over the panel,
or I click on an app icon on the panel. It doesn't happen every time, just
randomly a few times a day. After the crash, the whole panel disappears, then
reappears and seems to behave normally.

Are you sure? In the console it says "[1]29237 killed ./factor" and not
"terminated". Your script does not help because it requires using a console.

But perhaps it can be done with a kwin script? I didn't realize before now that
kwin is scriptable. If I can write a script, and maybe bind it to a keyboard
shortcut, to do what your console line does, that would be perfectly adequate.

Fyi, kwin sends SIGTERM, not SIGKILL.

No idea whether this helps you but

   WPID=`xprop _NET_WM_PID`; [ -z "$WPID" ] || kill -SIGNAL ${WPID#* = }

will allow you to send signals to windows which expose their clients PID
(required by kwin just as well and rather common nowadays) by clicking the

Is there a mechanism through which a QApplication/QWindow defines a default

4.6.4 is now very old and you are missing a lot of bug fixes and improvements,
particularly in KMM. I would strongly advise getting the latest release from
the Claydoh ppa. Hopefully you don't see exactly the same behaviour on the
Windows version?

I'm pretty certain this is not the case in the latest versions.

That is one thing, but the whole "Panel Options" submenu should be removed.
The only thing shown is "Unlock Panel" (not a submenu, just this one thing) and
only if it's locked.

kio_ftp had debug output disabled in KF5, I only re-enabled it today (due to

debug output, unless you feel like compiling KIO from git.

Btw ... grub surely doesn't matter to Kdenlive. Please try to focus to the
issue at hand. Mass information doesn't always help, but trying to be concise
helps us all.

As for trying to start without a kdenliveui.rc: you should find it in

start Kdenlive again.

I agree the user should be able to pick between IEC prefixes (kibi/KiB,
mebi/MiB, gibi/GiB, ...) or SI prefixes (kilo/KB, mega/MB, giga/GB, ...). There
is no confusion here, because MiB != MB.

I do not agree supporting 1024 B == 1 KB, 1024 KB == 1MB, ... This is a misuse
of SI prefixes that has caused confusion for computer users for too long. If
that is what JEDEC specifies, then we should not support JEDEC. We have SI and
IEC standards; we should follow them.

Please refrain from pasting email addresses verbatim. There's a reason email
addresses are visible only to logged in visitors. Personally I don't like to
get my addresses thrown around without thought.

As for the PDF that's inconvenient. Why not simply pasting the relevant content
into a comment here, that's fine. Much easier to read and not everyone likes to
download pdfs from unknown sources.

Did you do some update in between? From what you wrote this sounds rathet much
more like a system instability that Kdenlive may trigger. What kind of graphics
card do you have?

You may try to rename your kdenliverc config file to see if Kdenlive starts
again correctly.

Did you check your file system?

Initial install of Kdenlive 15 V3 was from website I think
I ended up using sudo to install it so not sure if it used my download or
got it from the internet. MLT was from mltframework.org V 6.2.0
Same re install MLT - it seemed to do itself when kdenlive sudo was enacted

When I had to update to kdenlive 16.04 to be able to use vidstab I used
the ppa: kdenlive/kdenlive-testing from Canonical - when I re-installed
tonight did it through sudo again and it updated itself, re-installed
whatever and asked me to delete some stuff.

There was a message in the ppa re strange spelling of two files and I
might have to update grub but it worked after that.

Under System Settings > Regional Settings > Formats you can select a Region.
Note that it has a locale associated with it. In my case it is de_CH.

If that locale does not exist or is built with a different charset than UTF-8
then this bug occurs.

On Gentoo that means you must add that locale with UTF-8 charset to
/etc/locale.gen and run locale-gen.

If I do that the problem disappears.

[kwin] [Bug 364330] New: Sending signals to client windows

2016-06-14 Thread Björn Lindqvist via KDE Bugzilla
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=364330

Bug ID: 364330
Summary: Sending signals to client windows
   Product: kwin
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: wishlist
  Priority: NOR
 Component: appmenu
  Assignee: w...@adishatz.org
  Reporter: bjou...@gmail.com
CC: kwin-bugs-n...@kde.org

(This is a feature request not a bug report)

If a process controlling a window kwin manages is not responding and you try to
close it with the X button you are given the option to terminate it by sending
the KILL signal to it.

I would like a way to send other signals to processes too. In particular, the
INT signal and/or TERM because stuck processes might very well respond to
those. For instance, TERM might allow it to shutdown cleanly.

This feature would be mostly for advanced users so it wouldn't matter if there
is no GUI for it or if the buttons for sending signals are "hidden away
somewhere".

We will do that, but this bug is not directly related to it.

Regardless of a full-fledged edit mode, the settings stuff should be removed
from the panel context menu, apart from a "Unlock Panel" option which is only
shown while it's locked. The only thing that might be changed if an edit mode
ever gets implemented is the wording of this option.

Hi again
Resending this - was forwarded to another email account and I replied from
there. Just got an email saying the reply was not from the right email
account.

Been up all night - its showing!

Thanks for fast reply - really appreciate it
I am resending this from my a...@little-waiata.co.nz email address
I can't remember exactly where the kdenlive came from - the initial
install - I found a kdenlive.7z file on my system - probably from kdenlive
site or sourceforge.
PPA was from Canonical site and was ppa: kdenlive/kdenlive-testing

Cheers Lorraine

--- Comment #4 from Simon St James ---
Unfortunately, Qt 5.5 introduced an overhaul of the shortcut system that broke
one "feature" of Qt that we relied upon (that directly replaying a sequence of
QKeyEvents - such as Ctrl+S - onto a widget would trigger any shortcuts that
the sequence of keys would normally trigger).

I have a local patch that works around the issue as best I can (though is still
not optimal - restoring this old - but undocumented and perhaps unintended -
feature of Qt is necessary for that), but it's based against a big refactoring
of emulated command bar which I'd have to get tidied up and committed first.
I'll see if I can do that tomorrow.

@Michal Hey :) Would you be happy to review a sequence of patches?

OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED

It's DVB-C. Scanfile entry:
C 41000 690 NONE QAM64

The following tests were done with kaffeine 2.0.3 and kaffeine was restarted
every time after resetting the tuner timeout values. Changing the tuner timeout
from 1500ms to the maximum of 5000ms didn't yield any different results, even
lowering the tuner timeout to 500ms didn't make any difference:
500ms: 126 Channels
1500ms: 126 Channels
3000ms: 126 Channels
5000ms: 126 Channels

I attached the logs during the scan and a dvb dump.

My version for Linux is the 4.6.4 (KDE 4.14.2) and for Windows is the 4.7.2

No, it's just the problem: adding extra characters into one narrow column don't
increase the column width which is fixed I think in percent of the screen size
independently of the window size.

While I tried to work around this bug I found out...

1. it seems to affect png clips -- but not exactly sure.
2. when I drag the png clip again onto the timeline and then apply the effect,
the effect works.
3. keyframes are not correctly working for effects, so it's almost impossible
to set more than a keyframe at the beginning and at the end. When doing so,
please notice the odd timecode slider setting after adding the second keyframe.
If you play around and add more keyframes, the slider as well as the timecode
input field usually reflect the previous keyframe, but not the one currently
selected in the keyframe table of the effect.

To judge by the backtrace, you were using Copy/Paste to create the new diagram?
And apparently you seem to have had a Note with a Diagram Link in the origin
diagram?
