[kwin] [Bug 390090] New: Compositing disabled on boot if background contrast effect is disabled

2018-02-08 Thread Nikola Schnelle
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=390090

Bug ID: 390090
Summary: Compositing disabled on boot if background contrast
effect is disabled
   Product: kwin
   Version: 5.12.0
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: compositing
  Assignee: kwin-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: n.schne...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

Created attachment 110442
  --> https://bugs.kde.org/attachment.cgi?id=110442=edit
screenshot

Since updating to plasma 5.12 effects get disabled on boot and I get the window
like on attached screenshot. Alt+shift+f12 enables effects only untill next
reboot.

Deleting kwinrc and rebooting fixes the problem, but if I disable background
contrast effect and reboot, the problem comes back, and I get disabled
compositing again at boot.

Unchecking "allow applications to block compositing" doesn't help. Bug gets
triggered when background contrast is disabled.

I can easily crash plasma with scrolling over sound/volume systray icon.
Although it does not crash every time.

I have never used valgrind and have no spare time atm to read docs, but if
there is some easy copy/paste valgrind command I would more than happy to run
it :)

Fixes the problem for me too.
Why kwin disables compositing? I want it to ALWAYS run. Like it was till 5.5
version.
Disabling and reenabling compositing brakes other stuff too, like panel shadow.

Well I had "missing letters" problem after wake from suspend in firefox, but
since I use DRI3 - never faced the problem again.

Install intel-microcode if you didn't already. Maybe it will help.

Anyway this is not kwin/kde bug.

Just tested. Discover finds vlc, clementine and gimp but not krita.

Muon package manager finds krita.

I am on intel cpu/gpu and this bug started happening when I updated to qt 5.6
and plasma 5.6 in manjaro.
After playing Team fortress 2, window decorations become broken.

I cannot test this any further tho, because I am back to kubuntu 16.04 which is
rock stable for me with plasma 5.5.5 and qt 5.5 and I cannot reproduce this
bug.

Probably the fix wont be backported to 15.10. Most kubuntu devs left kubuntu so
there are a few people working on it and 16.04 LTS is top priority. 16.04 will
be released soon so you can upgrade to it.

Staging is only for development release (currently 16.04) and only for testing
so no, you don't need it.

Btw this is kde bug tracker, not a forum. Join kubuntu-devel on freenode irc or
kubuntu forums, if you have questions or if you want to help kubuntu project.

Kubuntu 16.04 will ship plasma 5.5.5 by default. I pinged yofel and he
backported the fix so 16.04 wont have this bug. I can confirm it is fixed (atm
in staging ppa for those interested).

Can we have workaround implemented for this bug ("adding a shoddy timer delay
before loading the applets" as David said) until fix in available in qt 5.6?
Note that bug https://bugreports.qt.io/browse/QTBUG-48870 is still not fixed in
qt ("in progress"). Also qt 5.6 release is delayed again and again.

We have broken systray for months and we will have it broken in next months in
stable product...

Turn on option "synchronize contents of the clipboard and the selection" in
klipper plasmoid settings. Then it will work as expected.

By default it will paste text from top of the list with middle mouse click not
with ctrl+v. Above option fixed it.

After updating to KDE Framework 5.18 in Manjaro system tray is gone completly
crazy.

Now after clean boot Klipper icon is missing (earlier only sound icon was
missing), that half icon which @Mark is talking about is actually Device
notifier icon and it goes away if you open hidden item by clicking on the
arrow.

When system boots up, if I do kquitapp plasmashell and then plasmashell,
systray starts without these bugs.

Anyway, I cannot beleive that systray is still broken and we are at plasma
5.5.3 version...

Look at attached screenshots.
