Why did you apply the fix to Applications/16.04 instead of master?
It's a pain to build a different branch than master. :P

I finally managed to get screen captures to work again. 
Turns out that the directory that I wanted to save the captures in did not
exist. 

However, the time it took to find this issue does make the point that the error
message is not informative enough. 
I would have loved to be able to see the actual error message from ffmpeg,
rather than the generic "This and that crashed, check your settings"

My screen capture profile

I had a higher frame rate, and also has -threads=1, but setting the profile to
exactly your example still did not make any difference. 

Screen capturing still crashes. 

Is there any way to get a more detailed error message out of this system?

Can you please post a screenshot of your screengrab config (make sure to click
on the "info" button to display encoding parameters like I did in my
screenshot).

Also, can you check the correct path to FFMpeg is set in Settings > Configure
Kdenlive > Environment
