I couldn't find an alternative. The gnome-mag binary seems unavailable, I think it became a Gnome shell service. There's a System Settings > Desktop Effects > Magnifier effect, but I couldn't get it to work in Wayland. One workaround is to take a screenshot with Spectacle. It's not an application I use very often but it is annoying when I need to use it.
