Instant preview cannot be related, since that doesn't work if opengl is
disabled. I don't get a clear idea about the issue though from the original
description.

To disable instant preview, uncheck: (Main menu) "View" > "Instant Preview
Mode".

You could check if Instant preview is on and if so turn that off and see if
that makes a difference.
