In short, the Kontact settings are stored in $HOME/.kde/share/apps/ and $HOME/.kde/share/config/ The relevant config files are kmailrc, korganizerrc, etc. Same with the application directories, there is a kmail dir, a korganizer dir and so on. Simply copy these files to your new .kde directory (some distributions use .kde4 for that now). That should do the trick. There are some update scripts which should run automatically and update the config files to the KDE4 format (after that, you can't use Kontact from KDE3 with those config files). My own personal solution is to use evolution instead of kmail. I have not checked back to see if kmail is corrected for this. I think the problem is that the developers have convinced themselves that kmail is following the book, and the problem is that the imap server is doing the wrong thing.
