Bug ID: 338399
Summary: Korganizer complains of akonadi crashes on kcal
resource
   Product: Akonadi
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: ICal file resource
  Assignee: kdepim-bugs@kde.org
  Reporter: hei...@lsd.dk

Application: akonadi_kcal_resource (4.13)
KDE Platform Version: 4.13.3
Qt Version: 4.8.6
Operating System: Linux 3.14-2-amd64 x86_64
Distribution: Debian GNU/Linux testing (jessie)

-- Information about the crash:
Occasionally the crash report pops up, complaining about a SEGV, as in the
stack trace below. The trace doesn't look very useful otherwise.

I have three calendars defined in KOrganizer, one disabled, two enabled. The
two others are work-related google calendars, and Locatelli-H is my own
personal calendar, on a sftp: server (locatelli, my home server).

For some reason I can not get to the calendar properties of that calendar,
although the others work just fine, so I can not see the exact address or
refresh timing.

The crash repeats every half hour or so, probably related to the refresh
frequency. It can not be provoked by manually refreshing the calendar.

These crashes started to happen when I upgraded to Debian/Jessie yesterday.

[Akonadi] [Bug 338402] New: File system cache is inneficient : too many file per directory

2014-08-20 Thread roucaries.bastien+bug

Bug ID: 338402
Summary: File system cache is inneficient : too many file per

   Product: Akonadi
   Version: 4.12
  Platform: Debian testing
OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: grave
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: kdepim-bugs@kde.org
  Reporter: roucaries.bastien+...@gmail.com

from https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=757844

~/.local/share/akonadi/file_db_data/ is completly inneficient and render the
whole system slow.

Directory shoud not store more than a thousand of entry. With my multi
gigabyte mail box I have more than 90 entry in this directory.

See
http://etutorials.org/Server+Administration/Squid.+The+definitive+guide/Chapter+7.+Disk+Cache+Basics/7.1+The+cache_dir+Directive/

paragraph 7.1.4 L1 and L2 for how to do.

thumbnail cache, git and squid use this technique.

I am tented to raise to RC severity because some filesystem does not support
this insane number of file per directory (see for instance ext3 limit here
https://www.mail-archive.com/cwelug@googlegroups.com/msg01944.htm)

--- Comment #2 from Daniel Vrátil dvra...@redhat.com ---
The large folder works very efficiently on common filesystem (ext, btrfs, ...),
since we are just making use of the internal hashtree implementation of the
filesystem. We always know full name of the file we want, so we never list
content of the directory, just directly ask for a specific file, which
filesystems are generally very efficient at dealing with.

However we already had a similar report for some remote FS implementation that
had a hard limit on maximum amount of files in directory, so I'm inclined to
implement one or two levels of folders indirection.

However as the most common filesystem in use on desktops work just fine, I'm
not assigning this top priority now. It's definitely something for Frameworks
though.

To workaround the issue, you can configure a higher threshold for storing
payload in external files, i.e. Akonadi will store more data in the database
and put only really large payloads on filesystem. To do so, open
~/.config/akonadi/akonadiserverrc and in [General] section, add

SizeThreshold=16384

This will store externally only payloads larger than 16KB. The default is 4KB.

[Akonadi] [Bug 338370] Kmail2 (4.14rc) with gmail too many simultaneous imap connections

2014-08-20 Thread RJVB
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=338370

I downgraded to KDE 4.13.3, and removed, recreated the gmail account. The issue
has become much less frequent. Here's some output from netstat:

With the too many simultaneous connections, enterpassword/try again/cancel
alert still open:

 netstat -aeepW | fgrep imap
(Not all processes could be identified, non-owned process info
will not be shown, you would have to be root to see it all.)
tcp0 0 patux:57979 wi-in-f109.1e100.net:imaps
ESTABLISHED bertin 5617520 18352/akonadi_imap_
tcp0 0 patux:57526 wi-in-f109.1e100.net:imaps
ESTABLISHED bertin 5394945 18352/akonadi_imap_
unix 3 [ ] STREAM CONNECTED 5392495 18352/akonadi_imap_
unix 3 [ ] STREAM CONNECTED 5392357 18352/akonadi_imap_
unix 3 [ ] STREAM CONNECTED 5392742 18352/akonadi_imap_
unix 3 [ ] STREAM CONNECTED 5392270 18352/akonadi_imap_
unix 3 [ ] STREAM CONNECTED 5392192 18352/akonadi_imap_

After hitting cancel, causing kmail to take the account offline:

netstat -aeepW | fgrep imap
(Not all processes could be identified, non-owned process info
will not be shown, you would have to be root to see it all.)
tcp0 0 patux:57526 wi-in-f109.1e100.net:imaps
TIME_WAIT root 0 -
unix 3 [ ] STREAM CONNECTED 5392495 18352/akonadi_imap_
unix 3 [ ] STREAM CONNECTED 5392357 18352/akonadi_imap_
unix 3 [ ] STREAM CONNECTED 5392742 18352/akonadi_imap_
unix 3 [ ] STREAM CONNECTED 5392270 18352/akonadi_imap_
unix 3 [ ] STREAM CONNECTED 5392192 18352/akonadi_imap_

In other words, taking the account offline does not cause it to close all its
connections to the server, something I'd expect.

Sending a SIGHUP to 18352 causes it to exit, and immediately thereafter I can
online the account in kmail with success. That would appear to offer at least a
suggestion for a workaround solution. The restart command in the akonadiconsole
does NOT have that effect (in fact, it rarely appears to do anything with imap
accounts ... unless they're working properly?!) but it'd be much more
convenient NOT to have to launch a separate application to correct an issue
that's apparent in kmail.

Something else: given how gmail and kmail/akonadi all support IMAP IDLE, is it
still necessary to poll explicitly at regular intervals - and would NOT doing
so improve things?

Googling for akonadi imap IdleRidPath gave multiple hits for multiple IDLE
paths (which I guess I'd need) but also mentions a GUI for configuring those
... and I don't seem to have that. Has that feature ever been implemented and
committed?

I have tried downgrading Kontact with no success, using the apt-get install
kontact=version method, so cannot test the regression case suggested.

Also, I just received the 4.14 update and the account that was working, against
a server running Dovecot, now falls in the same way. So as of 4.14, it falls
for servers running both Courier and Dovecot.
