KMail does not allow to encrypt to expired certificates. It is OK to warn about
that (and would be a failure not to do so) but not allowing to encrypt to this
key is a severe security failure because it does not make any sense and forces
the user to use a different key (if available, usually not) or to send the mail
unencrypted.

There's no way to use a X.509 certificate/key for S/MIME from a CA which
technically isn't trusted. Neither if it's your certificate (for sending /
signing the mail) nor if it's the receivers certificate (for encrypting the
mail.

Maybe you don't want to trust a whole CA. But you may know that a certain
certificate is trustworthy (e.g. by comparing the fingerprint or because you
created the private key and anyone else has a copy).
Sadly there's no way to technically mark a single X.509 / S/MIME certificate
trustworthy. That's only possible for CAs.
(maybe there should be such a possibility for single X.509 certificates -
something to think about for Kleopatra - but as far as I know that's not the
way X.509 works)
(yes I know, I should use PGP for that trust model, but my contacts sadly don't
share that view and I don't want to trust their whole stupid CA - nevertheless
I need to encrypt my emails to them)


If sending an email, using an technically untrusted certificate for yourself,
KMail will just say (a situation that may also occur if someone else needs you
to use a certificate from a CA you don't like): "Could not compose message: Not
trusted"
No further explanation what's not trusted.
Instead there should be a warning, that you own key isn't trusted. And there
should also be the possibility to say "send anyway". Because, as said, you know
that you can trust a single key (but you can't technically set that mark to a
single X.509 key), but you don't want to trust the whole CA.


Similar thing the other way around:
Send a message to a receiver who's key technically isn't trusted. KMail will
give you a short warning, saying:
|  One or more of the OpenPGP encryption keys or S/MIME
|  certificates for recipient "recipi...@example.com" is not
|  fully trusted for encryption.
You can click "Cancel" or "Continue" and you can also select "Do not ask
again".
But also if you choose "Continue" KMail will refuse to send the mail, telling
you: "Could not compose message: Not trusted"

I have just tested this in KMail 4.14.10 from Fedora RPM packages.
Auto-completion still appears to only search the "Name" and "E-mail" fields
recorded in KAddressBook, and not the "Nickname" field.

I'll investigate building or otherwise installing a Frameworks-based version of
KMail.

No, it doesn't.
KDEPIM 15.12.3 is part of the main repos.

But it is true that it won't be installed automatically (as I wrote), and that
won't change in Leap 42.2 either.

We still let the user decide whether they want to switch to the latest KF5
version or rather stay on 4.14.10, for certain reasons.

True/Not true :) It won't install without explicit act, because this changes
vendor to obs://build.opensuse.org/KDE instead of the main repositories. I had
that already and it went wrong. So I wait until they have tested this out and
include in the main repos. And In November 42.2 will come with the new KDEPIM
in the main repositories and I will be able to try. My only point is that
closing those bugs is premature. I know that there was a lot of coding with
regard to I/O and email transfer in the meantime. But it hasn't been tested yet
by those who raised the issue

Gunter, Yuriy: Ok, there still seems to be *some* problem here, but it's not
the original bug. Since mixing multiple up bugs in one report makes it harder

Hi, no special characters in email adress and I didn't change anything in the
Advanced Options subdialog.

I used the gpg4win-2.3.3.exe installer package from https://www.gpg4win.org/

I installed the package as Adminstrator and run Kleopatra as Administrator.

Is there any way to check a log file ?

Mh, this is of course part of our general testing pattern. So it works,
usually.

Is there anything special about your username and E-Mail address (like special
characters). Did you change anything in the Advanced Options subdialog?

Ulf, thank you for your feedback. Is it possible for you to provide a backtrace
for this crash? Since it seems to be KMail crashing, you should get a DrKonqi
notification about the crash, which contains the backtrace in the second tab (I
think it reads "Entwicklerinformationen").

The certificate creation Wizard results in the message: Could not create
certificate: General error
I've tried filling out different certificate details and passphrases but to no
avail.


Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Choose File -> New Certificate... in the main menu
2. Choose Create a personal OpenPGP key pair
3. Fill out the details
4. Fill out the passphrase and re-enter it
5. Type some random characters while the key is being created ...

Actual Results:  
Key pair creation failed: 'Could not create certificate: General error' are the
error details

Expected Results:  
a personal openPGP key pair

Erik, thanks for reporting back. I know that many users are still using 4.14,
but we simply lack the manpower to keep up support for it. In fact, support has
been dropped officially more two years ago, and KDE never gave any long term
support guarantees for 4.14. Sorry to tell you that.

As for Gentoo: We might see a testing version of a Qt5/Framework-based PIM
suite in the main portage tree (without kde overlay) after the release of
16.08.2 or 16.08.3, but not later than 16.12.0, so this might happen within 3
months.

Colin, akonadi-1.13 suggests that your KDE PIM suite is much older than the
rest of your KDE Applications (which is not uncommon). Could you please check
KMail's version via "Help -> Introduction to KMail"? For KDE Applications
16.08, it should say 5.3.0 or 5.3.1 there.

I can confirm that this still happens with version 5.2.3

A number of older eMails that I have kept in my inbox to move them out of inbox
to another local mail folder keep re-appearing whenever I move them out of
inbox folder and hit "Nach eMail sehen" ("search for emails") in the menu.

I have updated kmail severail times since these emails came in, only them seem
to be affected. It does not seem to happen with newly incoming emails anymore.

I'm sorry to ask again, but which version of KMail do you use? You can find the
version in KMail itself (or Kontact, for that matter) and clicking "Help ->
Introduction to KMail" in the menu. This information is quite essential, since
we lack the manpower to support old versions.

Tried it with kmail5 16.08.1. I was unable to change the font and its size used
in the message and message list panels. Changing this in the folder panel works
as expected.

similar problem here: i only saw the date column, when i resized leftmost i
also had the Sender column. "Adjust column sizes" does nothing at all, so at
the moment kmail is unusable for me.

I am unable to check this for kmail5 or rather akonadi. It appeared when
connecting to a courier IMAP server with a problem. Now I am using dovecot.

The reminder didn't work at all, regardless of which clock i am using. I am
using KMail 5.3.0 and kf 5.25 (arch-linux). Maybe i do not really understand
how the reminder works, or for which circumstances it would be useful, or it
doesn't fit my needs.

So this bug couldn't be confirmed by me anymore. Feel free to mark it as
invalid.

I'm using 4.13.3.  In case you're wondering why I'm not using a newer version,
it's because I'm running Kubuntu 14.04.  And why am I running 14.04?  It's
because I need different wallpaper for different desktops and newer versions
don't have that.  It's been promised by the developer to return, but he
requested that people stop bugging him about it.  I'm eagerly awaiting the
return of that feature, but in the meantime I'm taking advantage of the fact
that 14.04 is a long-term release.

In any case, I'm unable to test whether my comment really applies to the latest
release of kmail.

It seems that it tries to show this message, but the crash happens.

I've got 4 accounts in my Kmail and this just happens from time to time (approx
1 out of 10 boots I will bump into this issue), and I have to reboot my machine
to fix it...

...but yes, it seems that this is a quite different from the description. I
deem that I've seen a similar issue here and this should be the reply to a
wrong thread however I can't find it...

Thanks, 'akonadictl fsck' removed the files from file_db_data. It didn't fix
syncing though.

I confirm the problems are still present in Kubuntu 16.04, which uses kmail2
version 5.1.3 (and I'm using kmail2 within kontact version 5.1.3).

I see that a handler _is_ invoked if the URI scheme is mailto. Further, the
kmail handler is invoked only if the email address is at the top of the list of
URIs; if a URL is at the top, nothing happens when Invoke Handler is clicked.
Further still, the "Preferred handler" setting is ignored; if it's set to
Browser, and an email address is at the top of the list of URIs, nevertheless
clicking Invoke Handler brings up a kmail2 composer window.

I would expect that if the preferred handler is set to Browser, then clicking
Invoke Handler opens the browser wherever the URL is in the list (assuming
there is a URL in the list, of course). And similarly for preferred handler =
KMail.

Since there is no git resource, that ported to KF5 anymore, I can test only on
IMAP.

And, as far as I can see, it working pretty fine for now.

Although, when I reported that buf I had something about 200k+ letters in Inbox
and something about 30-70k in some another folders. Since then I already
archived many of that mail. And with current amounts I don't experience that
bug anymore.

Yeah, I know about this button. And, as I said earlier, kmail ignores accounts
order, that I specified there.
