IMAP: Better handling of missing UIDNEXT response in RetrieveItemsTask

This improves experience with Courier IMAP servers which does not return
UIDNEXT in
SELECT response. That forced us to always refetch the entire mailbox. Courier
however
does return UIDNEXT in response to STATUS, so we now issue a STATUS command in
case
SELECT gives us empty UIDNEXT.

I agree on the not resolved/not fixed. This is a major issue since many people
don't have a choice on the software used by their email provider (especially

Not resolved, not fixed.
KMail 4.14.3 on KDE 4.14.13 (Ubuntu 14.04 LTS) is completely broken.
Every 4 or 5 mails one has to yell some akondactl restart at a shell.
If you bugfix is to install other servers - this is unacceptable. 
The real bugfix in this case is to switch from KMail to Thunderbird.

В таком случае, можно рекомендовать разработчикам указать данное замечание в
документации или, лучше, в самом kmail, чтобы пользователи не были смущены
проблемой. 
Сам же считаю kmail лучшей программой электронной почты, но печально, что
возникают такие нерешаемые проблемы..

Currently i migrated from courier to dovecot (seems to work) but
this is also defenetly massive an akonadi/kmail bug because.

No external service like courier-imap should produce so massive problems by
working with Kontact (Suite). After some minutes akonadi  stop to work and
makes kontact including calendar/todos unusable and need to be restarted like
killall -9 kontact; akonadictl stop; akonadictl start.
KMail (akonadi_imap) should don't influence other services.

Status: RESOLVED FIXED is not correct.

Everybody how try to use kontact, kmain, akondi with broken imap (like courier)
and don't find this tread, will think kmail (kontact) is broken and buggy
software. Note that kontact is a important part of KDE.

Thats a reputation of KDE depends also on this small komponent.

I guess this has been set to fixed because it isn't a bug of kmail or akonadi,
but rather a problem with the courier imap server that does not implement
uidnext. I have solved this by using offlineimap until I get our BOFH to switch
servers. I then run a local instance of dovecot, which is rather easy to
install. Perhaps you have more luck encouraging the courier folks to fix their
old software.

With Kmail 5.1 (kmail 15.12 on ArchLinux) I found another workaround:

This time you got to disable "Enable server-side subscriptions" then the mails
in inbox also appear. Changing the "Download all meeages for offline use."
option doesn't have a positive nor negative effect.

Kmail 5.03 still has this problem and even more, it doesnt work with dimap.

I don't understand the difficulties. Thunderbird, Outlook and Trojita have no
Problem with Courier-IMAP. They are even much faster.

I solved the problem at the server-side by replacing courier with dovecot. It 
turned out that this was quite easy. I looked at this change as a mountain, 
but it appeared to be a hill.

WORKAROUND:
One of my providers also uses courier.
After creating a new account, only messages from subfolders got fetched but not
the ones from INBOX. After enabling disconnected imap (Download all messages
for offline use) also mails from INBOX come in.

I had the same trouble with an exchange imap server (* OK Der Microsoft
Exchange Server 2003 IMAP4rev1-Server, Version 6.5.7638.1).

Yeah, I guess it depends on the definition on slow. If you want something fast
you better use another IMAP server.

No, I simply added an additional codepath that is only used if UIDNEXT is not
delivered on SELECT. So other imap servers should not be affected at all by
this change.

Sooner or later I want to migrate to Dovecot anyway. So I'm happy with the

I would suggest to have two IMAP resources to choose from when adding an
account to KMail. One with the new capability and one with which is a copy of
the one in the previous version of akonadi. Obviously with some comment about
which RFC is supported or with a comment on the new one that if that one does
not have the expected behavior one can try the other one.

I tested it and *for me* it is a better workaround than Christian's patch v2,
because of the lack of full sync. I mostly use just one client anyway, so
missing external status changes is not really a problem for me.

I've tested Christians patch and with it a refresh of just my inbox folder take
about 1 minute 40 seconds. So kmail would get unusable for me. :(

I dumped a imap debug log of thunderbird. It utilizes a UID FETCH ImapSet
FLAGS command that returns a list of mails with UIDs and corresponding flags.
seems to be a quick way to sync flags and detect deleted mails without having
all the mail headers downloaded.
also thunderbird doesn't always use an interval like 1:* for this command. It
seems that it takes the highest seen uid + 1 as prediction, so I've seen a
command like UID FETCH 443:* FLAGS when 442 was the highest uid in the list
before.

Here is a little netcat chat log with a Courier Imap 4.15 (Debian testing)

I installed the patch v2 via some OpenSuse package. It re-fetched all messages
from the Server (for me this was much). But it is also very slow. I have a
large inbox of about 5500 messages. It takes minutes on a 1.2MB/s line to
synchronize for each synchronization when it should only synchronize the diff.
kdepim-runtime 4.13.3 was so much faster. 
And yes, my imap server is Courier

I have backup folders per month for my email. With the patch, kmail downloaded
those backup folders now for the third time while it is guaranteed that there
was no change. This took seconds in kdepim-runtime 4.13.3 So the patch really
needs improvement. It doesn't work like this for folders with many emails

Yes, that is expected.

I don't plan on working on this any further. It could be improved, but courier
should just send UIDNEXT which is what is specified in RFC 3501 (IMAP). Note
that this simply reestablishes what was done before (You just didn't have any
debug messages telling you that a full sync was executed).

I don't think the behavior is the same as before. Previously it would switch
folders and display mails immediately. Now it only shows the preselected mail
immediately. When selecting another mail, I have to wait for the full sync to
finish before the contents of the next mail is displayed. The full sync can
take minutes, depending on the size of the folder and the connection.

So 
- either it did not make a full sync previously,
- or the full sync was way faster so the delay was not noticeable
- or the displaying of selected mails would not need for the full sync to
finish

In any case, this makes kmail with courier and not-so-tiny folders hardly
usable, even if courier is to blame for the lack of UIDNEXT support.

Isn't it possible to see what has changed between 4.13.3(4?) and 4.14? 4.13.x
managed Courier servers without this problem.

I don't see it really as Bug in Courier. RFC 3501 says
 Note that earlier versions of this protocol only required the
  FLAGS, EXISTS, and RECENT untagged data; consequently, client
  implementations SHOULD implement default behavior for missing data
  as discussed with the individual item.

I don't expect to see the requested feature in old rusty Courier Mail Server
soon - if at all. So this should be handled by kmail with appropriate action.
Isn't it possible to fallback to the behaviour in 4.13.x in this case?

Anyone tested my patch for ImapInterval in kdepimlibs? For me it's sufficient
to work with courier again using the actual implementation of kdelibs-runtime.
With the patch I can't see a complete fetching of the mail headers when just
switching to another message or changing folders. It only happens when the
mailbox has changed, e.g. new mail arrived.

client aren't reflected in kmail when refreshing the folder. not until mailbox
content is changed (new mail arrived or something moved) the flags are updated.

Please note that your patch is really rather a workaround that cannot be
upstreamed. Thanks a lot for your analysis though as it pointed me in the right
direction.

What's currently missing from my patch is that we are not using the
optimization that avoid downloading all messages on every sync. This is because
we usually rely on a combination of message-count and uidnext to detect if new
messages are available or old ones have been deleted. Whitout uidnext we could
still avoid a sync if the messagecount remains the same, but then we would run
into the problem that we for instance would never notice if i.e. one message
has been removed and another one added (which is nasty because it's very
unpredictable).

Is the nextuid always monotonic increasing value or is it also lowered by the
mail server in some circumstances?

Downgrading kdepim-runtime to 4.13.3 also worked for me, restoring access to my
Courier IMAP account.

For Thomas Tanghus, the command I used is:

sudo apt-get install kdepim-runtime=4:4.13.3-0ubuntu0.1~ubuntu14.04.1~ppa1

You'll probably want to run apt-cache madison kdepim-runtime since depending
on what sources you have, the 4.13.3 package may have a slightly different
version.

As you can see in the formerly attached log the Courier imap server does not
give a nextuid prediction, so the value -1 comes from the default value of
SelectJob. I don't know if Courier breaks any rules not to answer with UIDNEXT.

 I suppose we can catch this case and just fallback a very large UIDNEXT
 value.

I made a quick patch to set the nextuid value to 0 in
RetrieveItemsTask::onFinalSelectDone in case it's set to -1 before the FetchJob
is build. This way the ImapInterval will result not in 1:-1 but in 1:*.
According to RFC 3501 * represents the largest number in use.

This way the sync with kdepim 4.14 and Courier worked again. I hope this gives
a good starting point for a proper fix.

I apologize if this comment isn't strictly appropriate for the bug, but another
thing I found that will help folks continue to test other parts of current
development without breaking the workaround of downgrading kdepim-runtime is to
use

sudo apt-mark hold kdepim-runtime

Once a fixed package is available,

sudo apt-mark unhold kdepim-runtime

followed by an update and upgrade should pick up the latest, again.

I applied the attached patch to kdepimlibs which make kdepim 4.14.0 work for me
with Courier again. It lets ImapInterval interpret also negative values for
begin and end as unset. This way the missing UIDNEXT value will at least result
in a valid UID SEARCH command with parameter 1:*

It does not resolve the problem itself that no proper nextuid value can be
stored for further optimization. So on every check of the folder all message
headers are fetched. But at least the sync is not broken completely.
