At the same time, sending an email takes about 3-4 minutes where it is greyed out. So definitely a problem with akonadi response times. After the upgrade to 4.8.4 it seems to work, although sometimes with delays. This seems to me like one symptom of nepomuk/akonadi being very slow in responding sometimes (sometimes it can take a minute for a message to show up in preview or to open it).
