KR> Header Tank Rework

2010-03-18 Thread James M Brewer
Dave, I have a vinyl-ester header tank that Brian Kraut made for me last year
that fits a KR2.  I did not use it and will part with it for what Brian charged
me $125.  Let me know off net if you are interested and I'll send you pictures.

KR> Header Tank Rework

2010-03-18 Thread Jeremy D. Ellwood
Heya all. I'm Dave's son. The KR-2 is a project we're doing together. So
let's see if I can fill in any holes here (no pun intended).

We're actually redoing the panel from the current ½" wood panel that's in
there to aircraft grade aluminum with carbon fiber overlay. All the
instruments actually need to be relocated anyway. We're going full panel
with full 6-pack plus G-meter, full avionics, etc. It's a squeaker, but he
did a really good job at finding homes for everything. The problem is that
the header tank is just a we too close to the panel to slip the larger
instruments (i.e. Artificial Horizon) into the panel without moving the
panel back or pushing the tank forward or redesigning the tank. Moving the
panel back is out of the question due to the natural behaviour of the KR-2
and its limited room to begin with. Pushing the current tank forward is
absolutely out of the question due to the fact that it is already nearly
kissing the firewall (about ½" space) and is currently setting against a
'lip'.
I designed in 3D graphics the ideal size and shape of the tank we would like
to get, but to have it custom built is a bit out of our fiscal league at the
moment. But I would be happy to share that image with anyone who might have
some ideas or connections. ;)

We considered giving the panel a tiny bit of tilt to pick up an inch or so
without decalibrating the instruments. However, upon closer inspection, the
current panel is already minutely tilted... so that's out as well.

And for the record, I am loving this group. You all are a plethora of
information. Thanks to all of you for the existence of this group.

How about lamenting your existing panel to add 1 1/2" to it without actually
moving it. The only down side is you have move all your existing instrument
to the new panel surface.

Just my 2-cents

KR cloth will work, but you must use Vinyl Ester resin, if it was made with
that originally, and if it wasn't, you might want to replace the tank while
you are in there.

Hello all! I just bought a flying KR2 and am in the process of adding
some instrumentation. I discovered that the new instruments are about 1
1/2" longer than I have room for, and it appears that moving the panel
is not a viable option.

I would appreciate some information concerning what type of epoxy to
use, what type of fiberglass cloth to use, etc., etc., etc. if it
becomes necessary to cut an indentation into the fuel tank.

Thanks so much, and Thank You to ALL of you for the wealthy of
information I've discovered here!

Best Regards,

Dave

KR> Header Tank Rework

2010-03-17 Thread Barry Kruyssen
Hi Dave

If you fuel tank does not leak now I would not cut into it as getting
repairs/modifications on fuel tanks to not leak is a fiddly, time consuming
job. I would change the instruments for ones that fit. (And I have 20+
years of fibre glassing experience) Then again I am all over doing time
consuming modes to my aircraft. I just want to fly.

Regards
Barry
