Again everyone. the group buy is off for the Mylar. Eric Pitts led us to a
company which sells it very cheap and you can order it direct. 12 feet x 11
1/4 inches for $10.80. That will be plenty for you to have a reserve for
later when it needs to be replaced. Here is the link again.

I had it in two days.

KR> Mylar Gap Seals

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
Ever wanted to seal those gaps on your ailerons or even your rudder and
horizontal stabilizer? Troy Petteway has proven performance can be greatly
enhanced, especially your climb performance, if you close the gaps on the
bottom of your ailerons. This is especially true on the new AS50xx airfoil.
The best material we have found so far to do this with is Mylar strips. The
Mylar has a thickness of .010 (10 mil) and is held on the wing with 3M #444
double sided tape. Here is the dilemma. So far I have only been able to
locate the .010 Mylar in sheets 24" x 48" and the company that sells it has
a $100 minimum. That means at $7.41 per sheet we would have to buy 14
sheets. That is a lot of gap sealing material. Solution: Group buy!!! Is
anyone interested in going in on this with me and Mark Langford? I figure we
could cut the sheets in strips four inches wide and that would give us 84
strips 48" long for a total 336 feet of 4" wide strips. Now there is no way
two of us will ever use that much gap seal material so what do ya say...
anybody else want in on this? If anyone else knows where we can buy this in
lesser quantities or even in 4" wide rolls please speak up. So you ask, what
is your cost? Depends on how many people want in on this. Ten folks, fifteen
bucks each. Twenty people, ten bucks each. This includes shipping cost to
you. You will receive enough Mylar to do your ailerons (four 4" x 48"
strips). Additional strips available at additional cost. All of the Mylar
that is left over will be donated to the Prop Bank and sold in the future to
those that need it and those proceeds will be deposited in the Prop Bank
funds. You will be responsible for getting your own double sided tape.

This is untried, and I don't know if the cost per person is advantageous or
not, but in the interest of diseminating information, here goes:

McMaster-Carr has an ultra high molecular weight polyethylene tape
(hereafter known as UHMW) available that might well work in this
application. It is available in .0045", .0065", and .0115" thicknesses, of
which .0015" is adhesive. This is a very tough, slippery material, and the
adhesive appears to be durable. It is available in widths of 1/2", 3/4",
1", 2", 3" and 6" (not 4", unfortunately).

http://www.mcmaster.com/nav/enter.asp?pagenum=3197

I've used it for a bearing surface here at work, where we have a very heavy
sliding door; I put it on the guide rail and it doesn't show any wear or
signs of coming off after 7 years.

Will this work on a plane? I don't know. One hassle is that it has adhesive
all the way across, and some way will have to be devised to keep it from
binding on the aileron. If the thinner size is used, it could possibly be
doubled on the half that is not meant to be stuck (kind of like a sideways J).

KR> Mylar Gap Seals

2008-10-12 Thread jscott.pi...@juno.com

I won't argue that Troy saw an improvement in performance with the new wing,
but I found no advantage to adding gap seals to the RAF 48 airfoil.

Several years ago I tried the mylar film on my KR and carefully documented the
performance with and without the gap seals. In short, I found that it added
nothing to the climb performance and nothing to the speed. However, it did
make the ailerons very heavy in flight. If you have the RAF 48 wing, I would
advise that if you want to try this, do your test flying first without it, then
add the film later. Check the archives for details from the testing.

Here is the deal.the group buy is off. Eric Pitts, one of the newest KR
family members has introduced me to a company where you may buy 11 ¼" wide
.010 Mylar at any length you want for .90 cents per foot up to 50 ft and .75
cents over 50 feet ($10 minimum). So, if you need gap seals, go to the site
below and order the length you need. Basically you will need to buy 12 feet
therefore you could split the order with a buddy since that would be plenty
to do four ailerons or two planes. Here is the link:

I am using heavy weight drawing Mylar that I purchased from a drafting
supply house, frosted on one side. I am cutting it in strips and epoxying
the strips in place after fiberglassing the parts [ rudder, horz. stabilizer
and etc.] I then used a little epoxy filler to dress the seams flush and
sand smooth. Mylar will take painting just fine.
