I got distracted and forgot to mention in my first post that not
mentioned in the article was the very capable efforts and support of
Paul Visk, John Bouyea, Mark Langford, and others that helped to make
the Gathering a success.

NetHeads,

Well it's been a week of highs and lows. I've been working every morning
trying to get my plane ready to fly to OSH, just doing little stuff to make it
a little less embarassing when I park it right next to the archway (if the auto
engine planes are parked in the usual place). So Monday afternoon I got to
work and there were two messages...one from Greg Laslo and another from David
(Sport Aviation editor). David wants to arrange an air to air photo shoot, and
Greg wants to arrange an interview about my plane!

Now you guys have seen my planeit's hideous...so what can I say? I told
them I was pretty sure they wouldn't put a picture of a plane that was still in
primer in SA, and they agreed. The best I could come up with was for them to
do an article on the "next generation KR", especially since there will be
several of us flying in to OSH this year. You know what I mean...new airfoil,
Corvair or Jabiru or O-200, widened KR2S, etc., maybe a picture of several of
us parked at OSH and some flying photos of the nice ones. They might have gone
for that, but I'm not sure. I told them Bill Clapp's plane was probably the
one to photograph if they just had to pick one, so I gave them his number and I
think he's probably going to get the call.

I see my 15 minutes of fame flittin' away into the sunset. If only they'd
waited ten more years for me to finish it and get a coat of paint on it! But
you guys flying KRs into OSH this year need to spend a little time wiping the

KR> Sport Aviation Association Fly-In dates set

2008-10-12 Thread Ed Janssen
Netters,

For those of you who don't know - The 2006 Sport Aviation Association (SAA)
Fly-In dates have been set for June 23, 24 and 25. The SAA is a sort of
grass roots spin-off of EAA, started several years ago by EAA's patriarch,
Paul Poberezny. The event will again be held at Frasca Field, Urbana,IL.
Mark Langford attended a couple years ago and reportedly had a good time.
William Wynne has also put on a Corvair forum for the past several years -
always interesting and very popular. Not sure whether he's committed
himself to be there as yet.

Wouldn't it be neat to see some KRs represented there, weather permitting?
How about it Langford, Jones, Weber, and any others relatively close by?

Note that the SAA Fly-In at Urbana is not a public event. It is intended
for SAA members only. And now that the organization is sort of in limbo,
they aren't accepting membership applications nor publishing the magazine
anymore. It is a virtual organization that exists in 501C3-land and as an
email group, possibly with a website and/or electronic newsletter to come,
but technically you can't join anymore. I'm fairly certain they won't check
ID badges if you land and taxi up to the line though ;o)

So Oscar..you are saying the virtual judges, may just also be
the virtual air traffic control, the virtual ground crew and the virtual

So, I guess you watch when you land, when you park and pack a bag

That is correct and the price I gave includes the Corvair engine which was
about $3,200 of the cost of my plane. You can add shipping cost of parts and
materials which was close to $1,400 so I guess with shipping cost, I have a
total of about $14,800 or so invested. Not too shabby for a high performance
experimental. But then add the build time, then the costs skyrocket since I
set my time values extremely high.

KR>Sport Aviation Fly-in photos

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Langford
I went to the Sport Aviation Fly-in last month, and took 250 photos of wierd
little stuff that I was interested in. Oscar asked "where are the photos"
so here they are. I'm just too lazy to sit down and sift through them and
pull out the good ones, and write commentary and all that stuff, but with
Photoshop it's pretty easy for me to create a "canned" web page with nothing
but the photos. So I figure that's better than nothing, although it makes
viewing them a real pain in the butt compared to the way I usually do it.
They're at http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/SAA2003/ . My apologies if I
took 5 in a row of the same thing. Since digital "film" is free, I just
keep snapping photos until I get it right. That's pretty easy when you can
take 440 high res photos without downloading to the laptop (try that with a
floppy). For that reason, if bandwidth is a problem you might just want to
head straight to the last one of a series to save yourself some time.

I must say that I don't plan to ever miss another SAA Fly-in. It's the
who's who of experimental aviation pioneers, and some really nice airplanes
showed up. And I don't remember seeing but two "nose draggers" on the
field!

I took a few at OSH too, and will try to do a proper web page for them
eventually. The KR brats and beer thing was a great sucess. Thanks to
Mark and Dana for the effort! The forum and the KR dinner were the main
reason I went to Osh this year. Next year maybe I'll fly...

to know the pics and this net is the greatest and it has sure helped
me get the extra motivation I often need.

Yep, Paul Poberzny was there, and talking to anybody that wanted to talk
aviation. I stood next to Phil Boyer (AOPA president) in the dinner line,
and made small talk about Meigs. It's held in Urbana, Illinois every year
around the middle of June. See http://www.sportaviation.org/urbana.html for
more details. It's one that I will try my best to make from now on. Real
grass roots aviation, with many of the "who's who" pioneers of the EAA and
their planes, no vendors, no $5 hot dogs, and a refrigerated trailer with
four beer taps sticking out the side, with a voluntary contribution jar
sitting next to it, stuffed with dollar bills...

That sounds like a reincarnation of the real EAA. I'll bet they will even
welcome KRs and let them do a fly-by if they wanted to. I don't think that
I will ever forget the "snub" Oshkosh gave the KRs on the 20th anniversary.
