2017-01-25 Thread Jeff Scott via KRnet

Ron,

That's the way it's supposed to work... in theory. The reality is that many
FSDOs simply don't have the manpower to do amateur built inspections. I have
seen guys get held up for a year waiting on FSDO to do an inspection because
they wouldn't cough up the $500+ travel expenses to pay a DAR. It varies
widely from region to region and from time to time. DARs are contractors and
charge what they think is reasonable for their services. Some are $200. Some
are $1000. Some do good inspections. Some will drive up in their motorhome
with the boat on behind, sign the paperwork on the way by while heading for the
lake and charge you travel time for it on top of their fees. It's a real crap
shoot. However, it is a much better system than what we had prior to the rule
changes in 1980.

-Jeff Scott

-
Why do you even need a DAR during the build?  3 visits, for what?  The FSDO in
your city will come out for free if you can ahead and get on their schedule for
a final inspection, which is all that is required (unless the rules have
changed)??.

The photo in my first post shows a single AN-3 bolt holding the
attach bracket to the firewall with screws to check any rotation of
the bracket. I have found a number of the screws to loosen over the
years. If you use screws instead of bolts, check them for security
from time to time.

Stef,

I used screws to the firewall, not bolts though the firewall. I did not hinge
it, just attached it per plans with the recommended spacing. I see no reason
that screws would not be sufficient.

Hi guys,
I want to install the lower engine cowling with a hinge to the firewall. I want
to do this with small AN bolts thru the firewall. My problem is...you need very
wide hinges not to damage the frame frome the Side wall from the fuselage by
instelling the bolts.
Or do you all used screws And go in to the Side frame? If you use this methode,
you can pre drill it at 10 mm from the Side.

Stef,

Measure the thickness of the cowl, the hinge, and then to the center
of the opposing hinge. You may find that the attach bolts miss or
affects only the very edges of the sidewall member. With only three
or four bolts going through the firewall any degrading of structure
should be minimal. I have only three bolts each side holding on my
bottom cowl and the top bolt doubles with the top cowl.

Too many variables, the biggest is your ASI. Actual speed is
probably in the 45 to 55 mph range depending on size of wing on your
KR and weight. On the first flight, after you get comfortable , go
to altitude (your should already be there) , in level flight slowly
reduce power to idle and let the plane decelerate. Have the
altimeter pegged on a number and hold it perfectly level. As you
approach the stall you will probably feel slight buffeting. Note the
indicated airspeed when the nose drops and recover. Multiply the
read by 1.3 and use that for your approach speed.

My KR gives it up at about 55 indicated but it is heavy and shorter
then stock wings. Light weight and longer Diehl type wings will be
slower. My approach speed with those numbers would be about 72 mph
but it feels more comfortable at 80 mph with speed brake full out. I
get a bit of extra float and make wheel landings but can easily
handle 2500 foot runways. At less than 80 for me with speed brake
out it slows rather quickly in the flare and things happen rather
quickly from flare to touchdown. I like to settle on like a feather,
not like a belly flop at the swimming pool.

KR> Harness (2) for Slick 4316 magneto

2017-01-25 Thread Mike Stirewalt via KRnet
There's a heck of a deal available on eBay just now. Two harness sets
for the 4316 magneto, brand new, for $174. These are the original gray
woven insulated outer sleeve made by Slick/Champion/Unison. Fits 5/8's
plugs.

I made an offer of $150 and free shipping . . . was hoping to steal them
. . . but was declined.

I've been very close to buying them anyway. At $174 they are a steal
already. But they would end up sitting on a shelf in the hangar along
with all the other treasures I didn't need, don't need, and will never
need, but which I couldn't resist buying because they were such good
deals.

I've got a boxed, fresh Unison harness sitting on my desk in the hangar.
I can't remember just now but I paid well over $200 for it a few months
ago. So I will never need another harness for my 4316 this lifetime.

I'll bet there's a bunch of KR's out there with Slick magnetos that could
use some new harness wires. Slick/Champion/Unison original wires are
pricey - way more than $174 just for one set. This deal includes TWO.
Hard to resist it but I'm passing it on.

eBay item number: 122320515070

Part#: M2266

It's a But It Now listing with no ending date so it could disappear at
any moment. If anyone needs some wires this is one to jump on.

Only one "final" inspection required in the
USA. Different independent DAR's have charges

Before I get corrected by a bunch of people, IAS stall speed remains the
same regardless of altitude. Not sure what I was thinking when I wrote
that. Right after I sent that I thought "I wonder why I never thought
of that before". It occurred to me when I woke up at 1AM and something
was nagging at methat's a basic premise of IASstall speed is
always the same, regardless of altitude. I've gotten so used to flying
the iEFIS and having a true air speed indication, the two have converged
in my little bitty mind.

I think this question is even on the Basic Airman Knowledge test (I
probably made that up too). My only excuse is that I started mixing GPS
speed with IAS, and that I'm getting dumber by the day...

Re: KR> stall speed

2017-01-25 Thread Mark Langford via KRnet

Bob Russell wrote:

> What are realistic stall speeds with flaps?

As Larry said, you'll want to go to altitude and stall it several times
to get the "indicated" stall speed, because airspeed indicators are
notoriously inaccurate at low speeds...even the fancy new electronic
versions that I've used are off at the lower end of the spectrum. For
example, N891JF stalls "hard" (nose over) at about 36 mph indicated, and
that's on the MGL iEFIS. This isn't far from what Jim Faughn reported
in his "how to land a KR" treatise, but those are indicated. GPS stall
speed is closer to the low fifties, at the altitudes that I practice
stalls at.

If you are asking what's the difference in stall speed with
"plans-built" flaps, my guess would be about two mph, three mph at the
most, based on my experience with the much larger flaps on N56ML. KR2S
N56ML stalls at 57 mph with barn door flaps, 62 mph clean at "average"
loading conditions. KR2 N891JF stalls slightly slower, and even the
belly board drops stall speed 1.5-2 mph. These are all GPS speeds,
taken on calm days in two directions probably at 4000' or so, so it'll
be a little less nearer to sea level...which you don't want to do. You
can extrapolate it though...about a 2% difference per thousand feet.
You probably already know this though.

More stall speeds are listed at http://www.krnet.org/kr-info.html ,
although their accuracy is not assured. Speaking of which, nobody's
sent me information for a newly minted airplane for probably five years.
No new KRs are flying for five years? Please do some testing and send
me your numbers...

My DAR ,Frank Baldwin from Troy Mo. Doesn't charge anything. Only thing that he
requires is that you participate in Young Eagles.  Which I'm already doing.

Why do you even need a DAR during the build?  3 visits, for what?  The FSDO in
your city will come out for free if you can ahead and get on their schedule for
a final inspection, which is all that is required (unless the rules have
changed)??.

Our local DAR charges $600 and will only visit once.(although he is a friend so

When building my first KR2 back in the 70's, I just loaded my spars and
fuse. into my van and drove to the FSDO's office. I walked in and told them
I had my parts in my van and would they please come out and check them out
and sign them off for me. No problem, I was out of there in about 10
minutes.

Re: KR> Flight Training

2017-01-25 Thread Sid Wood via KRnet
Before my first flight our EAA Chapter Flight Adviser said to get lots of
recent time in a number of different aircraft. So he got flights for me in
a Cherokee with 180 hp engine, Yankee, RV-8, Citabria and 6 hours in a
Pulsar XP. The closest KR available to me was 300 miles away. His
philosophy was: First flight you are are a test pilot, so this would be
just another strange aircraft. None of the above operate like a KR-2. And
being an experimental aircraft it may or may not handle anything like
previously described. No question about it, that training saved my life on
my first KR flight. There was lots of drama and people running for their
lives from an unintended aerobatic airshow. CG issues and multiple hardware
failures have since been resolved and N6242 is now reasonably civilized. A
light touch on the stick helps also.
