Re: [libreoffice-l10n] Weblate, where we stand currently

2019-11-19 Thread Ilmari Lauhakangas
Sophie and Christian can answer the bug documentation question, but I
thought I would point out some things that show our wishes are fairly
well aligned with Weblate's roadmap.

Michal recently commented on an issue that was discussed on this list
early in the testing: grouping things.

"Typical example which would utilize some kind of nesting is LibreOffice."
https://github.com/WeblateOrg/weblate/issues/263#issuecomment-548916222
The issue was labeled "undecided" before this comment.

Michal is considering switching to PostgreSQL, which would probably be
very nice in our case (better performance, less memory use on the
server). Also: "Another nice benefit of switching to Postgres might be
using Amagama instead of writing translation memory service on our own".

https://github.com/WeblateOrg/weblate/issues/2825

Yes it downloads a ZIP of the whole project / component / language
depending where in the project hierarchy you use the download option.

And I'm part of those translators who contributes freely on my precious
time :-) There was a test period and we can't test it on all the cases

Because I'm afraid we don't have that resource, do you know a team ready
to develop a new platform for ~100 languages?

Lots of different projects are using it, it is well supported and we are
joining forces with other open source projects to be able to sustain the
tool we use.

We will face the same that we faced with Mozilla tools we have used by
the past, they could just abandon it when they don't need it anymore
like Moztrap for example.

They are not activated and I won't be in favor to add non open source
resources, but that is a discussion we can have on this list of course.

As you may have read in the past discussions on this list, we have made
a test on Weblate with only master on it. The testing period is over and
we are now adapting the feedback we had still on master before migrating
the rest of the projects.
So all the other projects are currently on Pootle and updated on Pootle.

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] Weblate -downloading the cy-GB tranlation of LibreOffice UI Master

2019-11-19 Thread Rhoslyn Prys

Thanks for your reply.

The problem is that you have moved to a new platform with out it being
set up properly and proper testing. Saying things like 'Not an easy one
at the moment, we are working to provide a solution' and '...we are also
working on adding...' shows a lack of consideration for your translators
who contribute freely of their precious time. Why not ask a small group
of translators to get involved in developing a new platform, whilst the
rest continue until it's bullet-proof?

I know Pootle is not being supported, I had a chat with one of the
ex-devs recently, but it's not broken, LibreOffice Weblate as is is not
fit for purpose, it may never be, it was not set up for a large project
like LO.

Have you considered Mozilla's Pontoon? LO's senario is similar to
Mozilla's with Pootle's demise. It's a large scale +100 language
translation tool using .po files, that may fit better than Weblate.

Weblate UI translation (
https://hosted.weblate.org/translate/weblate/master/cy/?type=todo=10#machine
) includes machine translation by Google and Microsoft. Are these going
to be included? They work well for Welsh. Something was appearing at
times under the Machine Translation tab, whilst I worked on the strings.
I though it was the delay. I'd translated the string by the time the
response appeared.

I notice that there are new strings on Pootle LibreOffice 6.3 - UI -
(https://translations.documentfoundation.org/cy/) are these the new
strings in Weblate or are they different?

Are we still using Pootle?

I've been doing some translation in Weblate and it's not working for me.
No translation memory, machine translation is slow or non existent, grey
print that does my glaucoma no good... I did not expect to be
retranslating common words in a project of this size and age. Saving
each string takes about 5 - 25 seconds.

So I'll sort your request one by one:
- translation memory: we are also working on adding Amagama
(https://github.com/translate/amagama), Christian is on it, to solve
this problem
- what do you mean by machine translation, you mean propagation of same
translations?
- could you let me know exactly where is the grey print?
- saving should not take you so long, from the feedback we had, it was
when going backward.

Pootle was better than this.  Why put us through this?

Because as I wrote already Pootle is not maintained any more, we have to
find a replacement for it. We are still in adjustment period trying to
find the best solutions for all of us. I'll post another mail with the
actual status on where we stand, please read it.

[libreoffice-l10n] Weblate, where we stand currently

2019-11-19 Thread sophi
Hi all,

I know how it's difficult to change a so important tool and our work
habits, so first I wanted to thank you all for your participation in a
constructive way to the test and the migration.

Some information on where we stand:
- Christian is currently adding Amagama to the translation memory, we
hope that will speed up the process
- The main problem seems that we can't download all files in one step,
here also Christian is looking at a way to download via Gerrit and avoid
using command line and API.
- Since the migration is not over, Weblate is not running on it's own
hardware yet, so that might be the problem we meet with the slowness on
some tasks, this is something we are monitoring
- we have form a group with OpenSuse, KDE and Fedora to push and share
our development needs. We will have a workshop during FOSDEM, if you are
there, please join the discussion :)

Don't hesitate to send your feedback to the list or to me, we need it to
improve the tool to best suits our needs.

Cheers
