Full localization of the user interface is not required, but in order to
work with Ossetian text some source code modifications may be necessary.

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] what means "format program" in this context ?

2023-02-25 Thread Andras Timar
Hi Cristi,

LibreLogo is built-in. Check View - Toolbars - Logo in Writer.

The description of "magic wand" icon from Help:
Program editor/Syntax highlighting/Translating

The “magic wand” icon sets 2-page layout for program editing, expands and
converts to uppercase the abbreviated, lowercase Logo commands in the
Writer document. Change the language of the document (Tools - Options
- Language
Settings - Languages - Western) and click on this icon to translate the
Logo program to the selected language.
Best regards,
Andras

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] Mistakes in source strings

2022-09-20 Thread Andras Timar
Hi Annabelle,

I think you are right, the rules are laid down in UX Guidelines, cf.
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Design/Guidelines/UIWriting
However, LibreOffice is a huge project and you cannot expect that every UI
string (some were added 20+ years ago) complies. I'm not a big fan of
cosmetic changes, because they create work for translators. But I'm not in
charge and would not oppose such patches from contributors.

Best regards,
Andras

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] Mistakes in source strings

2022-09-05 Thread Andras Timar
Hello Annabelle,

"Macro From" is correct, i.e. the library where the macro comes from.

You are right about the second issue, LibreOffice vs. %PRODUCTNAME, and it
has been already fixed in later versions. Usually we do not backport
English string fixes for minor issues like this, in order not to break
existing translations.

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] how should I read this string ? (from Windows installer component)

2022-03-13 Thread Andras Timar
Hi Cristi,

"Advertising" is a special term in Windows Installer terminology, it refers
to the ability of an MSI packaged application to heal itself, if files or
registry keys are corrupted or missing.

You can look up in MS Glossary what the official translation is for your
target language, however, I think this message will only appear in MSI
logs, not on the user interface.

The author probably thought that "ODF 1.3 Extended" was a proper name. But
it's just a label, nothing will happen if you actually translate the term
Extended. It may or may not confuse the user. That's all.

[libreoffice-l10n] Localization of the Online Android app

2019-12-12 Thread Andras Timar
Hi Cloph,

As we discussed on IRC, the Android app is now based the Online code, and
it lives in the online.git repo. You said that Weblate can handle
strings.xml directly which is great. There are two strings.xml to be
translated:

./android/lib/src/main/res/values/strings.xml
./android/app/src/main/res/values/strings.xml

We have pushed a few translations directly already (es, pt-BR, and
pre-existing tr).

Thanks,
Andras

It's not a bug, it's a feature. ;)
I mean, not all strings end up in Online po files. Some are taken from the
core. It would have been no sense to duplicate the work. Menu item
translations are in core already, but Online source has to be updated with
core translations before a release.

The other difference is that nextcloud.documentfoundation.org uses version
6.3.0, while master branch is translated in Pootle. I'll double check the
l10n status of LibreOffice Online 6.3, and probably the issue will go away
in next release.

If you want to print a specific area of the spreadsheet, you can set the
print range by inserting column and row breaks – I think this is what it is
about.

Usually it's OK to translate this as 'Start copy/paste'. Cross means that
it's not an internal copy, but we download the content, put it to
system clipboard (we need to ask for user's permission to do that) etc.

There is no deadline. Translations are done on best effort basis.
LibreOffice Online 6.4 source code release is expected in January 2020.
Collabora has a different release schedule for Collabora Online, but
Collabora Online is released frequently (actually daily docker snapshots
are publicly available).

[libreoffice-l10n] LibreOffice Online new pot files

2019-11-06 Thread Andras Timar
Hi Cloph,

I updated LibreOffice Online pot files this week, especially there is a
large chunk of new help text. Could you please update Pootle?

I've already copy existing Spanish translation of this new help, so
it woud be good to import help-es.po to Pootle, as is.

I also have have Portoguese (Brazil) translation, I'll either copy it
to Pootle, or give it to the translator for reference.

Thanks,
Andras

We have the translation for "English spelling dictionaries, hyphenation
rules, thesaurus, and grammar checker" in LibreOffice source in 85
languages. I don't know who uses oxt, when it's built-in already, maybe
there is a use case.

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] Question re: Hungarian website

2019-05-14 Thread Andras Timar
Hi Mike,

I get this question quite often. :-/ The URL was generated by SilverStripe,
from the title of the page, which is Letöltés (Download). SilverStripe
transliterated letter ö to oe, as per German rules.

Google search for "LibreOffice letöltés" gives this URL in the 1st place
for me. How can this be improved SEO-wise?

But in general, I don't care. You can change it. Of course, old URL should
be kept, in order not to break existing links.

Thanks and best regards,
Andras

You are right, there are many more dictionary extensions on various sites,
than "internal" dictionaries in LibreOffice source code.

For the internal dictionaries, the situation is different case by case.
Sometimes the dictionary has an upstream repository, and maintainer send
patch to LibreOffice or ask a developer to create a patch based on a new
release. In other cases the dictionary was committed once and it is
unmaintained in LibreOffice.

In case of Esperanto, I see at least two upstream versions on
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Language_support_of_LibreOffice
Did I understand you well, that you would like to submit a 3rd one?

Thanks for this. Can we possibly automate the process, please? I mean,
update pot in Pootle automatically, every 2 weeks or so. I have to ask for
an update every time, and sometimes it takes weeks to get the job done.
Maybe it's waste of human resource to do this manually. (BTW I pushed 2 new
strings today.)

Thanks!

Well, today I changed this, because the term "Remote Image" was not very
good. Instead, "Insert Image" will refer to image insertion from Nextcloud

image insertion from the device/PC. I updated the pot file.

"Insert Remote Image" - inserts an image from a next Nexcloud folder
"Share" - shares the currently edited document with a Nextcloud user

Hi Michael,

Yesterday I was too tired to find the solution, but this morning I found
it. Now Welsh and Scottish Gaelic are selectable[1], and you can test
LibreOffice Online in these languages. I can add more locales at request.

Hi,

"Always follow the editor" -- it is a feature, that you can follow the
cursor of the person, who edits the document. For example when there is a
meeting, participants can follow the minute keeper.

Thanks for testing. Menus will be localized in the next drop, but
localization of dialogs is more difficult.

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] LibreOffice Online instance to check your translation

2018-01-17 Thread Andras Timar
Hi Rhos,

This is embarrassing, but it seems that Nextcloud does not have Welsh
localization, while ownCloud has (on demo.collaboracloudsuite.com). I found
cy_GB files in the settings/l10n/ folder of Nextcloud, so in theory the
Welsh language should be selectable at Settings. Maybe it's a Nextcloud
bug. I'm sorry about that.

LO Online has the Welsh localization, but you cannot switch to that
currently. I hope that the situation will improve after some time, this is
a bleeding edge test server with latest versions of all components
(Nextcloud, LibreOffice, LibreOffice Online).

Best regards,
Andras

[libreoffice-l10n] Updated LibreOffice Online UI pot

2018-01-03 Thread Andras Timar
Hi Cloph,

I updated the UI pot of LibreOffice Online, after a major l10n rework. Now
we have a lot fewer strings to translate, and we get many translations from
LibreOffice automatically.

Can you please update Pootle?

https://cgit.freedesktop.org/libreoffice/online/plain/loleaflet/po/templates/loleaflet-ui.pot

Thanks,
Andras

[libreoffice-l10n] LibreOffice Online pots updated

2017-10-04 Thread Andras Timar
Hi,

This is just a heads-up that LibreOffice Online UI pot was updated in
Pootle today. Last update was 6 months ago, but fortunately there are not
many changes.

Source:
https://cgit.freedesktop.org/libreoffice/online/plain/loleaflet/po/templates/loleaflet-ui.pot

Happy translating!

The Collabora Online Connector app has the code name 'richdocuments' in
both ownCloud and Nextcloud. Yet, the two apps are different.

ownCloud: https://github.com/owncloud/richdocuments
Translations: https://www.transifex.com/owncloud-org/owncloud/richdocuments/

Nextcloud: https://github.com/nextcloud/richdocuments/
Translations: https://www.transifex.com/nextcloud/nextcloud/

Other than that, we use the default install, the official modules.

[libreoffice-l10n] Re: New pot for libo-online

2017-01-02 Thread Andras Timar
Hi Christian,

Happy New Year!
Thanks for updating libo_online pots in Pootle in December. A few new
messages were added recently, could you please do an update again from
master:
https://cgit.freedesktop.org/libreoffice/online/plain/loleaflet/po/templates/loleaflet-ui.pot

I don't know why, but something went wrong with the help translations in
Pootle (loleaflet-help.po). The help text has not been changed since May,
but half of the translations became fuzzy. A few translators went through
the fuzzies and accepted them again, but many didn't. :(
Please don't update help template this time.

Many thanks!
Andras

Translation statistics are unreliable. For example:
https://translations.documentfoundation.org/projects/libo_online/ shows 760
words incomplete for Slovak, while
https://translations.documentfoundation.org/sk/libo_online/ shows that
Slovak is 100% translated.

Slovak is just an example, I found this in case of many languages.

[libreoffice-l10n] LibreOffice Online translations

2016-12-12 Thread Andras Timar
Dear Translators,

LibreOffice Online pot files were finally updated in Pootle. If you have
little time, please ignore help file, because it has not changed since May,
2016, and I have no idea why the half of it became fuzzy after the update.
Also, in UI you can ignore the endless list of Unicode ranges, which is
from the Insert Special Character dialog. If we don't take these two things
into account, then the update is minimal. Of course, if you have time, feel
free to click through the fuzzies.

Thanks,
Andras

Yes, log in to ownCloud, and at owncloud/index.php/settings/personal there
is the language selector dropdown. But ownCloud is just one example. There
are unlimitied possibilities to integrate LibreOffice Online with any web
application. Think about LibreOffice Online as a component, not as a
standalone application. It is up to the integrator, how to use
localizations of LibreOffice Online. It is not restricted by any means at
LibreOffice Online's side in theory.

Have you tried LO Online? Of course you can build and install it yourself,
but probably it is easier to try the CODE VM (
https://www.collaboraoffice.com/code/). In CODE VM LO Online is integrated
with ownCloud. ownCloud provides the cloud storage backend for LO Online,
in this case. So, with my patch, it will be possible to use the language
that the user set in ownCloud. I think it makes a lot of sense. In this
case, language selection is in ownCloud settings. Loading the LO Online
iframe with the lang parameter gives the chance to integrators to change
the UI language. Note: it does not work in CODE VM at the moment, it will
get this update later.

Naturally, localized LO Online is only possible, if the strings are
translated. Incomplete translations will result in mixed English/localized
UI, just like in desktop LO.

Andras

No, it's not impossible. In fact I've just implemented it.
https://cgit.freedesktop.org/libreoffice/online/commit/?id=62abb2533dab121156c8a5eef9db6d27e25cde65
It adds an optional 'lang' parameter, and if it is present, then it will
take precedence. It it's missing, the Accept-Language header will be used,
which is sent by the browser. The problem with this approach, that if user
asks for a localization in the 'lang' parameter, that is not present, then
the UI will fall back to English, and not to the next preferred language in
the Accept-Language header. (Or maybe not. I did not try.)

I did not find a better list. Maybe it's weird, maybe it's incomplete. For
example I can select Kurdish and Yoruba from Firefox -> Preferences ->
Content -> Languages -- the two examples you gave in your other email. But
with the 'lang' parameter, it is no longer important, what browsers
support.

I hope this helps. Best regards.

Please note, LibreOffice Online is a web application. We can support only
those languages that have support in browsers. See the list at:
http://www.metamodpro.com/browser-language-codes
ca-valencia is a notable example that is *not* on this list. There can be
other examples. Please check, before translating.

Thanks,

Hi,

These terms refer to shapes which are drawn by obsolete methods. The new
way to draw rectangle and ellipse is to draw them as custom shapes. The old
methods produced draw:rect and draw:ellipse in ODF.

.po files are named after directories, not after files. In .po files
file names are there in #: comments and in msgctx fields. It is
possible to automatically replace file names in git and in Pootle, but
this can cause disruption for translators who work offline, and
translation memories have to be regenerated.

In general, these are not for translation indeed. You may want to
check, if they are all complete sentences or something that can stand
on its own. I mean the *_part_title variables that we discussed in the
other thread, they are using similar scheme, and it that case we wrote
out the original string instead of variable embedding.

I changed the placeholders, that was the easy part. See

I don't know what exactly this is, but from the code, it seems that
the 1st placeholder is "application", the 2nd is "topic", and the 3rd
is "item". I assume you know what DDE is, in general.

new po file or major parts of it I see no reason why not to make this
feature work already in RC4 (even RC3?) so at least those l10n teams have a

for this. Also other teams, even if they have not finished with the
translation, might benefit with this to test and see how their work
 performs.

Thanks for the head up, I'll report your request to the next ESC on Thursday

I'm not sure that I'll be on ESC tomorrow, so let me answer here.
Nobody told that it won't be available before RC5. Wiki says The
shortcodes will be localized for the final version of LibreOffice 5.0
-- which means that it is targetted for 5.0, the earlier RC is the
better. It is not a question of enabling something. The code that
merges translations is yet to be written. It simply does not exist at
the moment. The developer of the feature, Laszlo Nemeth, will be back
to work next week, and hopefully he'll find some time to finish the
work.

[Runtime] is not a placeholder, it is just a word in brackets.
Unfortunately there is no unified placeholder style across the whole
codebase. But all are the same as in Openoffice.org.

Out of interest, does new Pootle have the Invalid XML check? That is
the most useful IMHO (for help).

Indeed we should find better wording (same for OpenCL blacklist/whiltelist).

Blacklist contains drivers that are known not to work. Whitelist is
the opposite: the list of drivers that are known to work. In
translation you can try to explain it, if the target language does not

Maybe dependencies are not set correctly, I don't know... I've never
built LibreOffice like this myself. When you ran make, did you see
your language dependent targets (RES, XCU, UI, etc.) rebuilt? If it's
a dependency problem, then you can always 'make clean' things, and
then make again. Maybe it's an overkill to issue a toplevel make
clean, and rebuild everything from scratch. For example, if you want
to rebuild sw onyl, then 'make sw.clean make sw' will do the trick.

It would help, if you listed what exactly needs localization in your

 Thanks a lot Andras

I added Guarani UI translation to the build. See
https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/gitweb?p=core.git;a=commit;h=b68ecae158c327c3fd85de9d2babb657ae97da1d

Now you can configure master to build Guarani UI with the following
autogen.sh switch:
--with-lang=en-US gug

I think it is enough to have it in master only, because only 15% is
translated. Localized betas of LibreOffice 4.5 will be released in
May.

Also I renamed language code 'gn' to 'gug' in translations module:
https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/gitweb?p=translations.git;a=commit;h=b88d2877688f4d01d3f054a4fd0246b2159136c3

Cloph, can you please rename 'gn' to 'gug' in Pootle, too? 'gn' is the
code of Guarani macrolanguage, and 'gug' is specifically Guarani in
Paraguay. We use the 'gug' code at all places in source code (it was
added earlier).

Usually I update the help wiki when I find some time (1-2 times a

This search reveals a few of them:
 https://translations.documentfoundation.org/da/libo_ui/translate/#search=%3CFsfields=sourcesoptions=exactunit=28753831

So maybe the wiki should have said:

 • *X*, where X is a word in uppercase letters, is *normally* a variable
which should not be translated. Some examples are FIELDNAME, FIELD,
 LOGICOPERATOR and VALUE.
 • *FILENAME* is NOT a variable, though, and you should translate it!

But let us get some input from people with knowledge on the subject. :-)

It is hard to give rules when it comes to LibreOffice, which uses a
mix of technologies. FILENAME in backgroundpage.ui is a placeholder,
it will be replaced by the actual filename. It does not matter what
you write there (translated or not), it will be replaced. So it would
be better to make FILENAME non-translatable in the source (I've just
done it), and do not confuse translators with exceptions.
