Each language team is free to handle it how they feel fit. Some allow
anonymous suggestions, some require users to be registered, some have
everyone being able to translate directly, others prefer to use
suggestions/to review submissions before integrating.

> How many sugesters become translators each year?

Yes, that's basically it. The ones dealing with the translation for
many years already decide on how translation should happen, they are
the ones who can judge best. It is unfortunate, but not everyone who
shows up to contribute does so in good faith (thankfully rare to have
trolls, but apparently not unheard of), but some might show up with
good intentions, but are just not familiar with LibreOffice/the terms
used and introduce lots of inconsistency and thus confusion. That of
course is partly to blame on the language not working to create a
glossary of the common terms, but that's mostly due to the history of
the project/that there was no way to create a glossary in the old
translation system.../not everything can be covered by a glossary.
Starts with the level of politeness the user should be addressed and
goes to specific terms for stuff like cursor vs caret, etc.

> Should we
> wait for translators to retire and sugesters to become rare?

No - of course when the previous translators are not responsive and
someone shows up to carry the torch, there's no problem in granting
the necessary privileges, but as long as there's an active
translator/an active translation team there's no need to change the
policy/having admins bypass their wishes and willy-nilly grant
privileges - that will only result in them leaving. (and I personally
would rather keep those who are already known to stick with the
project than risking putting the translation onto a newbie that might
lose interest in the next month already - pissing off the ones with
experience just to not come across as "difficult" is a bad choice from
my POV).

I think it isn't really a big problem that not everyone can make
direct translations, after all even people with translation privileges
still sometimes chose to submit something as a suggestion - of course
hard to know the details since naturally most of those discussions
likely happen in the corresponding NL-lists/communication channels and
do not end up on this list.

> I think weblate was a very bad choice.

Weblate has nothing to do with it, that policy would be the same in any tool.
You might have other reasons why you think weblate is a bad choice,
but how the LibreOffice project decides to manage permissions
certainly is not a problem with weblate. You could give anyone
translate permissions in weblate as well, it is just something we
think would be a bad idea, again proven by the hesitation by the
Korean team who had trolls in other projects already.
It is the same with source-code contributions - we don't give anyone
direct-commit privileges from the get-go. We accept patches in gerrit
from anyone, but only after the user did show that the quality of the
contributions is good and not just a one-off, then ESC can suggest
granting the privileges.

Also suggestions and accepting them isn't the only way the project
can handle it, the alternative would be translation with review or
setting up suggestions with voting - but that is more or less the
same/would make more sense in larger translation teams.

That's also not a fair representation, since that also doesn't
explicitly mention translators/doesn't make any distinction between
users with direct submission privileges and those who are "only"
suggesting. The document speaks about the language community, and that
includes both translators and suggestors.
Same with our dashboard, that also includes suggestions in the default
view/stats

> There was a survey, what are the conclusions and which step next ?

The results of the survey were published here:
https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2024/03/29/results-from-our-survey-of-libreoffice-localisation-tooling-and-workflows/

And next steps are to add machine translation But participation
was quite low and not everyone feels the same about any issue, so
naturally people rely on feedback.

Also I strongly disagree that users with suggestions wouldn't get
credit for that. Weblate shows suggestions in the user profile and our
dashboard reflects that as well.

If you have examples where suggestions are ignored in terms of giving
people credit, then please point those out, those omissions are

Categories aren't completely new, but were improved, previously there
was the option to create component lists/aggregates of components and
I created https://translations.documentfoundation.org/#componentlists
as a first test back in the day, grouping help to their modules as one
way to structure them. I don't know if anyone actually used those for
translation, since they are quite "hidden" in the UI

Yep, some like cui and svx are used across everything. And it is
certainly possible to add them, but of course weblate doesn't know on
its own, so it would be ideal if someone could compile a hierarchy
that would make sense from a translator's perspective.

Also what we're not really using all that much is prioritization of
components/strings (that would change the order if you were to just
hit translate in a project and not manually pick a component).

I guess as a simple test to see how it looks I'll create a
"dictionaries" component - that is relatively easy to scope, has all
strings following the same pattern/basically only the language name
changes between the strings and thus might be a good candidate to
consolidate that way, also large number of components with few
individual strings...

Yes, that's far more preference-dependent/requires input from the
corresponding l10n teams.

I don't think our groups currently allow you to switch that yourself,
but you're more than welcome to request a specific workflow for your
language that Sophie or I can then configure for your language/for a
specific project and your language.

[libreoffice-l10n] pocheck errors for master/24-2 affected: af am ast ca-valencia fa gl hy lv mn nb nl oc pa-IN szl tr vec

2024-01-10 Thread Christian Lohmaier
Pocheck errors are enforced by pocheck, translations running into the
issues mentioned below are ignored. Make sure to fix those please.
Most of the enforced/problematic errors are already enforced by
weblate, however the check to prevent having the same translated
string for two strings that need to be translated differently is not
easily mapped to weblate's check system.

Types of strings that need to have a unique translation:

* Style names (paragraph and character styles like Heading, Title,
emphasized, ...)
* Calc function names
* math (equation editor) symbol names

If you manually search for Choose Home - Arrange - In Front
of Object. you get a hit, but just barely below the
threshold for being considered in the automatic list.

You get some %, but weblate thinks that the match is not close enough
to be worthy of an auto-suggestion.

It at least is "working as designed" - don't think that tags in this
context are treated special, my guess is that they are treated like
regular elements and thus contribute to a lower match/score.

Also probably a case of ask two people, get three opinions on what
should be the "correct" score for mismatching tags

I think I solved it yesterday evening, there were some incompatible

fixing that one fixed all other errors.

There's no overall policy imposed by TDF. It is up to the individual
translation teams to decide whether they want to allow suggestions
from members not in their team/from anonymous users or only logged in
users...

Don't get that - what do you have to click for being allowed to edit?
This thread only started with the suggestions, because the use-case of
"use-suggestion and edit it" was slow - it doesn't mean that people
will use that as their primary way of working with weblate. It is way
more common to just do translation by directly committing the string
or to accept a suggestion without the need to edit it first.

Yep, those are from the amagama server/the pootle strings - and
weblade doesn't seem to be using it on purpose/never did show it it
seems (no show_quality property in
https://github.com/WeblateOrg/weblate/blob/main/weblate/machinery/tmserver.py#L75
vs
https://github.com/WeblateOrg/weblate/blob/main/weblate/machinery/weblatetm.py#L74

See also https://github.com/WeblateOrg/weblate/discussions/7932 why it
was removed. For some of the services it is just and arbitrary number
used to sort the results for display, not something that actually is
provided by the queried engine. So while amagama does report a
score/some numeric value to indicate the match, I'm not sure whether
it makes sense to add it, since the methods to calculate the score are
different/the lookup is by just the source-string without any
location/context or other information...

During FOSDEM I got a chance to talk to the weblate developers and now
have an explanation for that - from Weblate POV that is not a single
action, but you accept the translation, and then edit it. Weblate adds
the string to the list of strings that needs to be updated in git and
puts that into the update queue, but since the same string gets
modified, the change needs to be flushed out to disk (git commit)
immediately so that state isn't just discarded, so the waiting time is
due to the time needed for the git commit (waiting until nothing else
writes to git, acquire the lock, do the actual git commit). (In our
setup we have it set to squash changes when pushing to the
repositories, so the individual commits won't show up in our
repository as individual changes)

So long for the explanation - but there also is an easy fix to improve
that situation: Instead of waiting until you submit your edited string
(and weblate realizing that the string already has a pending change),
the commit can be triggered as soon as you hit the accept and edit
button. So during the time it takes you to edit the string and hit
save, the commit is already done, and you probably won't notice the
difference between regular updates and the accept-and-edit suggestion
case. So should be fixed in one of the next releases.

I assume you refer to the entries in the "Automatic Suggestion" area
from the weblate translation memory.

Weblate has a three-tier translation memory:
* the project's translation memory, that can also optionally create
all new entries into an
* instance-wide shared translation memory
* and finally a user-specific translation memory

So you'll see delete entry buttons for the strings coming from your
user translation memory, for strings that you translated in the past
within weblate.

If you point me to those invalid entries, I can remove them.

I see it has entries from weblate's translation memory as well as from
the amagama server, the tmserver entries. That contains old strings
from pootle, from the time before weblate was used. So old strings
from tmserver, new strings from weblate's translation memory.
And I guess weblate just doesn't return amagama's quality score
(Levenshtein distance), but all results returned by amagama have at
least a 75% confidence (from amaGama's POV), but that's just comparing
against the source string, so not sure whether it is suitable to also
show it

[libreoffice-l10n] Languages with errors: af am ca-valencia ckb gl kk lv mn nb nl oc pa-IN ro szl tr vec

2022-04-05 Thread Christian Lohmaier
The following languages have errors that need to be corrected. Strings
affected by those errors will ignore the translation.

Many of the checks are reflected in weblate now, so what the remaining
check still finds is strings having the same translation and hence
being indistinguishable. That affects
* Calc function names
* Math symbol names
* format style names

Interesting, didn't read anything re fixing problems with
notifications in the changelog, but even better that it got fixed, one
thing less trying to hunt down.
Maybe it is the changes re the django admin interface that fixed
it/reapplied whatever settings to its internal model.

> > I would keep LO 7.0 until May next year if it is ok.

Fine with me, there is no urgency here, I didn't plan to remove it in
the next months anyway, but also don't plan to have it around for as
long as the 6.3 ones :-)

I think with the translation propagation between branches having the
old ones up for reference/to copy from is no longer necessary, but I
of course don't want to remove a source of updated translations from
distro builders (although I don't think any distro manually adds
translation patches to their builds from the intermediate github repo,
I don't update the LibreOffice translation repository after EOL date).

Those appeared during conversion of the stored-in-database glossary to
a stored-in-a-git-repo glossary. I suspect they were added in one of
the old glossaries as "Terminology" that made them show up in all
languages. So "intentional" from the code side, maybe not from the
user POV.

That's a bug in weblate when a glossary is shared across multiple
projects, the UI glossary was shared with 7 other projects and
weblated showed it 7 times and now is shared with 4 and appears four
times (removed 6-3, 6-4 and 7-0 from list of repos to share it with)

> > Also the recent Weblate update made glossaries more usable while
> > translating, but unfortunately also harder to find otherwise.

There certainly are UI bugs with the repositories, especially when
appearing in an "other components" section it is broken compared to
the "all components" listing, and also the list of untranslated
strings is not useful, since that is just counting all source strings
across all languages, but you only see strings explicitly added to
your language (and you'd also add it with a translation anyway)

> > There's no
> > direct link to glossary any more from the language pages.

Why would you need one there? The glossaries are project specific,
although in our case the master UI glossary is shared across the other
UI branch-projects and help (but having branches in different projects
is also not a typical way to organize projects in weblate, that's just
due to the size of LibreOffice).

You're listing it as a component, as it is in
https://translations.documentfoundation.org/projects/libo_ui-master/ -
no difference there.

Can be renamed if people prefer that, but it is primarily assigned to
the libo-ui-master project and just shared with the other projects.

This is weblate being over-careful. A push to github failed (likely
because of a network hiccup), and any repo-action-failure triggers the
automatic locking - that helps to fix issues in case of real problems,
but in this case was unnecessary

Should be OK again.

No easy answer on that one. Some checks might be false positives, but
others probably are not.

In your case it seems all failing checks are "unchanged translation" -
so those are OK to just ignore.

I can patch weblate to never apply the check for Welsh/cy if you think
it makes sense..

Indeed, fell victim to unintuitive UI in the weblate/django admin
interface. While I removed Japanese of the list of languages the
"Guest" user has the "add suggestion" permission, there's an
additional control that needs to be changed from "all languages" to
"as defined".
There's no error message when saving with a reduced set of languages,
but the "all languages" setting still wins and basically undoes the
selection.

> Or is this behavior correct?

No, was not as intended. This time I made sure to set to to "as
defined" and that Japanese is still excluded when reopening the group.

Sorry for that..

Well, yes and no..
Stock weblate would handle this by going to the "other occurrences"
tab and using the "apply translation to all propagated strings".
However we modified the part that determines how to propagate strings
(across projects) - so doesn't work that way, as for that to work the
component name needs to be the same.

I did just modify it to also deal with context "stock" differently, so
that then is the way to do it in weblate.

And then there of course is scripted way for advanced users.

If it affects work with LibreOffice specifically, it also doesn't
hurt/it is recommended to also post the link here then. TDF might be
able to fund work in the area or do a local customization depending on
the scope of the request.

[libreoffice-l10n] ANN: weblate update this weekend (start on Fri evening)

2020-12-16 Thread Christian Lohmaier
Hi *,

I'll update our instance of weblate to the latest 4.4 version this
weekend, starting Friday evening. There'll be a multi-hour downtime
since one of the updates require larger database operations.

The updatepath (4.1.1 we use currently → 4.2.2 → 4.3.3 (that step is
the one that takes a while) → 4.4 is being tested on a separate
testing VM with a much smaller dataset to keep times in check.

Components will be locked during that time, so no translation is
possible during the whole process.

Weblate should be available for translation again on Saturday.

After the update is complete, I'll also create the 7-1 projects and
update master templates accordingly.

(I'll send another message when everything is done)

Yep, would have been a problem for everyone - cause was removal of
two pot files (dictionaries/es.pot and dictionaries/pt_PT.pot) - those
were removed from the templates, but the files were not removed from
the translations, but zip-export doesn't like that, and expects the
pot to be present/fails otherwise.

Solution was simple: I also removed the two files from the translations.
(note however that the removal of strings likely is an accident, and
that they'll reappear again - the source files had their language
changed from "en-US" to just "en" and that caused the
string-extraction to skip them.

Indeed there was a messup, corrected now. No translations should be
lost, since updating against the templates puts them into the obsolete
sections (the lines prefixed with #~ marker) and the fixed template
update should have pulled them from there.

Thanks for catching that! (would have been fixed with the next update
in a similar way, but your post was soon enough to do a fix tag for
7.1.0.0 alpha1 with the fixed templates/translations)

This has been answered in telegram channel the other day (and a while

(tldr: propagation of translations when uploading files was disabled

You might have picked bad examples, but for all you cited, the old
translations are showing up on the Machine Translation tab and are
offered for insertion. In this case they come mostly from the amagama
based TM, i.e. the one that was done based on the translations
imported from the old branches from pootle.

Well, they do, on the machine translation tab. For old strings (that
already were translated on pootle) from the "tmserver" source (the
local amagama server), and for translations done on weblate it would
be from weblate's tranlsation memory. (that in old version was rather
slow, but with the version we deployed last weekend also those results
should be quick to load in.

https://translations.documentfoundation.org/translate/libo_help-master/textswriter01/it/?checksum=3797f7853b8bfc5d#machine

Is one of those strings that were changed during weblate times and
thus have a match from weblate's TM as well as similar matches from
amagama..

So maybe I'm completely missing your point.

To clarify: Hausa is available as a language in Weblate, because
weblate itself knows about the langauge - there are no LibreOffice
files yet, but I'll add them with the next update against templates.
So it is expected that no files are showing up right now.

Wow, you have eagle-eye for spotting that - long story short: that was
some error back when the translations were updated against the
templates at some point - the pot files have the same key-id, but that
wasn't carried over to the po files.

> They don't show up in the other's "similar strings" section either, though
> that's probably expected as that feature may only match strings in the same
> Weblate project.

Not sure what you mean with "similar strings" section. There's nearby
strings - but that only are strings from the same component that are
just before/after the current string in the po files.
Then there's "Machine translation" with weblate's own translation
memory (with strings that were translated on weblate) and the strings
from the amagama server (listed from "tmserver") as they had been
translated on pootle (the latter obviously doesn't cover any strings
that changed for master/6-4 since the switchover to weblate happened
way before that).
Weblate's translation memory has different layers, personal and the
language one. It is configured to share translations between
components/projects, so it will show/offer entries from other files
and the other branches if they had been translated in weblate.
See for example:
https://translations.documentfoundation.org/translate/libo_ui-master/connectivityregistryflatorgopenofficeofficedataaccess/de/?checksum=e9a36bc3245f66d6#machine
you should see suggestions from "tmserver" (i.e. amagama, having the
old strings as imported from pootle) and suggestions from the shared
weblate translation memory. For that from the same project (in this
case libo_ui-master, but different component) as well as shared one
from different projects (as the strings is very generic it matches in
help and online projects as well)

Weblate's translation memory is also available from the dedicated
"Translation Memory" section (honestly I don't really understand why
there's a distinction between weblate's TM as "Machine translation"
and as "translation memory") for which basically the same applies:
that covers the strings translated while using weblate. So
tmserver/amagama covers the old/existing strings, and weblate TM
covers the new strings.

tldr: machine translation matches should come from all projects and
components, if they don't show up, then either because the string is
relatively new (had not been translated in pootle) and/or because the
string was not translated using weblate/weblate didn't put it in its
translation memory. Taking your example: the string from the master
project shows up as an entry from weblate translation memory for the
6-4 project. It won't show up as entry from the 6-4 project when
viewing the master one, since it has not been translated/added to the
TM of the 6-4 project, but rather was a string that already had a
translation when the file was imported. Or otherwise put: history of
the string is empty/unknown to weblate)

> It would be nice if such problem can be avoided. I only noticed this because
> this is an extremely long string. There are probably many other short ones

Nope, that was the only one, and this specific problem also cannot
happen anymore.

The tools from the translate-toolkit are better suited for work like
this than the plain gettext commands (esp. when dealing with multiple
files at once, since you can use directories with it)/a multi step
process is better suited.

http://docs.translatehouse.org/projects/translate-toolkit/en/latest/commands/pomerge.html

so let's say you edited the 6.4 files, and you want all identical
source strings to be the same translation (not only those you
touched), you could use:

pomerge --mergeblanks=no --mergefuzzy=no -t master.po -i 6-4.po -o
updated_master.po
(can also directrly specify master.po in the outfile, but likely
better to do in separate file first to compare/sanity check :-))

Since pomerge doesn't have a --no-wrap switch, long lines get split up
into multiple lines in the output, and that makes comparing it to the
original harder, so add another step:

msgcat --no-wrap updated_master.po > final_master.po

the you can easily diff master.po to final_master.po with your
favorite diffing tool to double-check the changes.

The main difference between using pomerge and msgmerge is that pomerge
hs the --mergeblanks=no switch.
Of course can also be wanted to have strings untranslated in the
target as well, but if it is you can enable it :-) pomerge will
"complain" about different units though (if a unit just is in one
file) - but will do its job nevertheless.

Do you have an example? If you mean a display like "31 / 100" - then
just is a score of 31 on a scale that goes to 100 for a perfect match.
So that would mean a pretty low confidence level in that case.

Propagation of translations on file upload has been explicitly
disabled by weblate authors:

Symptom of a different problem: yes. Serious: not really (from my POV).

The problem is that there is not much context in terms of
sourcelocation in those strings. The only info is
"filename.htmltag-hierarchy.linenumber" but no other context. So there
is some guessing involved in what did change, and with little
information to work with there will be misses.
Even more so since multiple locations with same string are condensed
into a single string to translate.

So to improve this the pot file would need to have more info in it -
and for that the html file would have more info to extract/make use
of.

If this is regarded as too annoying, I can disable keeping of old
source strings when updating with new pots from the repository for the
liboonline-help project.

It was a misconfiguration of the default User group - it was meant to
allow suggestions from everyone with an account, but we had it set to
allow translations. I fixed those permissions, so shouldn't be
necessary to manually adjust permissions of the user in question.

If you also want to prevent suggestions, then let us know.

That's default behaviour for gettext/msgfmt though. By default fuzzy
strings are ignored and not taken into account/are omitted from the
generated .mo file.
And fuzzy/needs work is default behaviour in weblate, so no changes
here. So if other projects treat fuzzy translations as valid in the
program, they either explicitly use the --use-fuzzy switch to msgfmt
or filter it out using some other means.

And traditionally it is used to flags strings that were
auto-translated during the update of templates, where the change looks
similar enough for the msgmerge program that it thinks the translation
is the same, but with slight changes that make it not 100% certain
about it. Sure it can be used by humans as well, but for that most
tools (at least the web-based ones) have replaced that by the concept
of suggestions. (but they would work similar fashion: unless it is
accepted the string will be treated as untranslated (or the current
translation will be used in case the suggestion is to change an
existing one)

Weblate would allow for a dedicated review workflow, in which a
translated string would still be listed as translated, but will still
be flagged for review.
This would be a project-wide setting though and not a language specific one.
https://docs.weblate.org/en/weblate-3.10.3/workflows.html#dedicated-reviewers

If it is about reviewing changes by new translators, you could also
use a project's history and advanced search.
There's history available under e.g.
https://weblate.documentfoundation.org/languages/fi/#history for all
projects for a language or
https://weblate.documentfoundation.org/languages/fi/libo_help-master/#history
for a specific project.

Also you can use search with advanced query tags, e.g.
changed:>=2020-01-01 AND NOT changed_by:cloph

for all changes done since January first and not done by me. (I assume
excluding a small group of reviewers here is easier than listing
"untrusted"/watched users here.)

tldr;
* fuzzy strings are considered untranslated
→ could be changed in msgfmt invocation
→ changing that requires consensus of ~all translation teams
* weblate would support review workflow
→ can only be changed on a per-project level
→ should have consensus by significant number of translation teams
(not using the process will not break things per se, it just
means that permissions need to be tweaked that every translator can
also set their own translation as reviewed or people need to ignore
"needs review" state)
* weblate has history/powerful search that can be used to review
strings manually/in batch without a special flag
→ no consensus needed/each project can do whatever they want
→ manual work/need to manually keep track of "last checked date"
or similar.

In this case it was a mistake, it should have been "[…] didn't include
all translations that were done in
weblate […]".
In other situations it is just easy to compare some functionality on
how it was done in pootle, since then people know what the feature in
question is about without using many words.
So something like: "In pootle I was able to do this and that, how
would I do the same in weblate?"

The times for each RC are listed. And the weeks for the RCs are also
the week that applies to the translation-deadline (1st day of the
week, aka the Monday)

e.g: for 6.4.0:
[…]
RC2 Week 2 , Jan 6, 2020 - Jan 12, 2020
RC3 Week 4 , Jan 20, 2020 - Jan 26, 2020

To have the translations included in the RC2, which is tagged in Week
2, the translations have to be submitted until January 6.
For RC3, week4, it is January 20.

The ReleasePlan is pretty static, changes to the plan are rare.
(and most of the times it then would be delays, and not shifting the
deadline to an earlier date).

There was a bug/oversight that caused a problem here: not all
translations that were done on weblate were actually flushed out and
committed to the repository when I prepared the release.

> Reading [1] and [2], I was under the impression that
> translations made on Monday 27th January or earlier should have been

No, you missed something up. While it is true that if translations are
done on Monday, they are included in the release, since prepping of
the tag typically happens Tuesday evening or on Wednesday.
But it needs to be the Monday of the tag-creation week, not the one of
the final release announcement. The last RC is renamed and released as
final, so no updates to translations are possible.
So for 6.4.0 the translations the deadline would have been January 20.
I did export the translations from weblate on Tuesday the 21st - but
as mentioned that didn't include all translations that were done in
pootle, the changes only were partially reflected in the repository.

> but this clearly isn't the case. Did I misunderstand

Both a misunderstanding (the RC week is the deadline, not final
release), and specifically for 6.4.0 there also was another issue.

Weblate's own TM has too bad performance for a project structure like
we have for LibreOffice.

Depending on the nature of the TM, I can add it to the amagama
instance, but if it is old translations from pootle, then those are
already available. (and for strings that were translated in weblate,
the builtin machine translation tab should also work just fine.

> - Also, it should be possible to download a "general", or "per project"

See above, we're not using weblate's translation memory. And for our
case there is no distinction anyway, since all is a single
project/everything is related (so I don't see the need for having it
"per project" - why would you only have a TM for 6-4 but not for 6-3
and master?)

That again of course due to the way we have weblate setup, with
branches being on their own project because of the number of
individual components we have, and not the standard way of having the
different branches within a project.

They are not hardcoded into LibreOffice, but they are taken from the
system, and in the case for Windows that is tied to the keyboard
layout IIRC, for Linux it is based on the UI language in Gnome, not
sure on what it depends on KDE..

Only some get explicitly replaced in LibreOffice, e.g.

You could still have the strings translated with embedvar, couldn't you?

In worst case scenario you'll have as many strings as there are
versions (with only benefit that translators can not accidentally
change the version itself), but variable definitions can be nested, so
maybe it is possible to use variable id "productversion" in the
translatable string, and have something like actual
version?

I added it to the global list of special characters (tab, newline,

> canrannol neu werth pwynt (e.e. 110% neu -2pt neu +5pt)."

it thinks the string is some placeholder string, so false positive.
it has c-format label, and there placeholders have the form
%[parameter][flags][width][.precision][length]type

A space would be a valid flag (add space for positive number, but a
"-" for negative values) - so "% o" from source string and "% n" are
different, hence it complains/warns.
But that's not the cause of the error

> I'm not clear what error is here.

the c-format label on the string is misleading/wrong technically. If
it were used as a c-format/placeholder string, the percent signs would
have to be escaped:
… 110%% or -2pt…
but the string is not used as a placeholder string, so the c-format is
added errornously by xgettext - the strings from hrc files are
extracted using this command:
xgettext -C --add-comments --keyword=NC_:1c,2 --keyword=NNC_:1c,2,3
--from-code=UTF-8 --no-wrap cui/inc/tipoftheday.hrc -o
/tmp/messages.po

But seems the strings in the file don't use c-string style placeholder
definitions for all strings, but a mix of $1 ... $2 style and also %1
or $(ARG1) $(ARG2)...
only 16 strings seems to be using c-style format like this:
NC_("SV_STDTEXT_SERVICENOTAVAILABLE", "The component (%s) could not be
loaded.\nPlease start setup with the repair option.")
But even then it is not real c-format string, but later replaced by a
find and replace (so the placeholder can be anything)

All others use a freestyle-way of placholder %SOMELABEL, the $1 style,
the %1 style or $(ARG1) style...
So "fix" for the bogus warning is to change the xgettext invocation to
not assume C++ format strings/strip the c-format label from the
result.

> Any ideas? I'm not sure it's creating
> the above error, though.

The warning is unrelated.
Make sure to pick a file-upload-mode and uploading should work.

As I didn't have any problem updloading a file with the change you described:
https://vm137.documentfoundation.org/translate/libo_ui-master/cuimessages/is/?checksum=54e51525910b6a67
I assume you just didn't pick one of the file-upload modes. You need
to tell weblate how to treat the uploaded strings.
Whether they should be made as suggestions or flagged as fuzzy or
flagged as need review or just committed as-is.

You can then further limit to what strings in the uploaded file that
setting should apply to. You can tell weblate to ignore strings that
are flagged as fuzzy in the po file, and you can also tell weblate to
not overwerite strings that have been translated in weblate already.

> Has anyone been able to upload a file to our Weblate?

Yes - and just tried with the component/file you had problems with. So
please double-check whether you did pick a file upload mode.

I guess the bug in weblate is that it doesn't tell what field is
required, just that "This" field is required and hoping that you know
which field is meant ;-)

The -C option is meant to switch all perl handles to use UTF-8, the
letters SDA specify what the utf8 should apply to.
S: stdin, stdout, stderr
D: input and output streams (→ reading/writing files)
A: arguments (options passed to the script)

if you don't run the script itself (chmod u+x weblate-download.pl and
then ./weblate-download.pl directly), it is better to run
perl -CSDA weblate-download.pl …
But the error is not related to connection failures, but rather would
lead to wrongly encoded filenames and similar (but should not be an
issue for LO's pootle, all filenames are ASCII)

Without API you can only do a limited number of requests per day,
while OK to get a list of files/components, not enough to actually
download them all.
But you're already getting a different error 500 is internal server
error. Maybe you were unlucky with your timing and you tried just when
the machine was rebooted. The 500 error /can't connect message is not
related to the api-request limit.

> Also, whatever I've tried in the wlc-client points to a missing API-key.

So if you tried numerous times: are you behind a (mandatory) proxy?

No, that is for when weblate is pushing changes to the git repository.
You can find your api-key/token in your user profile
(user-icon → Settings → Api-access)
https://weblate.documentfoundation.org/accounts/profile/#api

> 2. where can I find simple example on how to install the key? Is it done

The weblate-download script would look in ~/.config/tdf-weblate by
default (should contain just the key, nothing else), or you can use -k
/path/to/someother/file to use a different file.

But your problem is not related to the keyfile (you'll need it anyway,
since LibreOffice consists of too many components to fit in the limit)
- but you should be able to download ~95 files (the other 5 are used
to get the list of components) and then it would fail with something
like this:

Yes - the xml-tag check only does a simple parsing of the source and
target strings, and creates a list of tuple of tagname and attribute
names and then does a simple equality check...

https://github.com/WeblateOrg/weblate/blob/master/weblate/checks/markup.py#L172

So is a false positive check/only does what the code tells it to do..

Oh, if that ends up in actual translations repository (as opposed to
translations-weblate intermediate one on github), then the check for
function names in pocheck should be amended according.
Right now it checks for duplicates only it seems...

As I like perl better than python, I wrote a helper script that will
take care of downloading multiple files
https://gist.github.com/cloph/76d4c22f0e0d8c81c55a8acab98c3311

copying the builtin help here for reference.

Usage:
weblate-download.pl is used to download multiple po files for a project
from TDF's weblate server. Downloading will replicate the directory
structure as used in the repository. Note that anonymous access is
restricted to 100 requests/day.

Examples (use --help to see all options):

"weblate-download.pl -t /tmp/pofiles -p libo_help-master -l fr"
"weblate-download.pl -k -l vec -f dictionaries"

Options:
All options names are case-insensitive and can be abbreviated as long as
the prefix is still unique

--target=/path/to/save/to
the target directory (will be created if it doesn't exist already) to
use for the download

defaults to /var/tmp/weblate-download

--project=project
the project to process - either "libo_ui-master" or "libo_help-master"
defaults to libo_ui-master

--language=lang
the language to download, required.

--filter=componenteprefix
optional option to restrict the download to only those components that
start with "componentprefix"

--verbose
optional switch to output more progress information

--keyfile[=fileWithApiKey]
optional switch to enable authenticated API access. If "--keyfile" is
specified without a pathname, it defaults to ~/.config/tdf-weblate

If the option is not specified, anonymous access is used (restricted
to 100 requests/day) The file should contain just your personal API
key (found in weblate → profile-icon → settings → API access)

--overwrite
optional switch to overwrite already existing files. If not specified,
download will be skipped for existing files.

Use at your own risk.

--help
show this help

They wouldn't get overridden by weblate, rather weblate would error
out with a merge error that I would then have to fix, and I'd rather
tend to avoid that :-)

Thats even worse, then you wouldn't get the sanity-checks done by
weblate and similar and likely will mess with my process of updating
templates and committing to source again as well.

but there's option
 c) for those projects really wanting to upload all at once: use the
weblate client program and use a script to automate the upload using
the API:

Sure, that can be setup. so to confirm: you want anyone, including
anonymous users without any login to be able to make suggestions?

yes, basically it is handled with pootle as well for cases where

I only created those components list to illustrate one possible
workaround for the lack of aggregation in weblate.
I could create similar aggregates for UI project as well if that would
help. But this is only a way to have a high-level overview of the

While automatic push is not yet enabled, the plan is to have it push

there is no such feature in weblate webUI. One possibility would be to
use welbate client program / api wrapper and write a script that
iterates over all components and downloads them, but I think that
would be more complicated to use than fetching the files from the git
repository.

Oh really? Maybe it is tied to the xml-validation checks that
currently still are disabled.

So if that's the case consider that solved then :-)

You can also search in a whole project in weblate.
But what weblate doesn't offer is limiting search to a "folder" (since
weblate doesn't have concept of folders)
So in weblate it is either whole project or single file (component)

> This feature enables translators to check existing terms or translations
> and fix them.

Hmm. I wonder whether an additional Glossary-based check would fill
this gap in a more elegant way?
I.e. you add your terms to glossary/terminology and we maybe could
write a check for strings that don't have a translation that matches
the glossary.

Weblate already has a default "inconsistent translation" check
https://docs.weblate.org/en/weblate-3.8/user/checks.html#inconsistent
that follows a similar idea (but is not enabled in our instance
currently, since same string is corner case in our project, and more
likely than not it is in different context that requires different
translation, so I'm afraid that check would cause too many false
positives) - and for same string weblate has dedicated "other
occurrences" section when doing regular translation, example:
https://vm137.documentfoundation.org/translate/libo_ui-master/scaddinsmessages/de/?checksum=f718cc3da84a2ebf

> Listing the components as folders under the project and searching text

But this also sounds also like something that can be done more easily
offline, with the po files directly?

That said: if we were to have a solution for aggregation by folder, we
could put both help and ui into a single project solving your issue?
Not sure whether I did really understand the problem correctly.

> The way Pootle works is designed to serve multiple translation files under
> different projects which fits LibreOffice well while Weblate is not.

Don't quite get that, since pootle also is limiting stuff on a
per-project basis. (but within the project it works on folders, with
automatic aggregation, that's right)

> If we are moving to Weblate, and that should be solved to fill the missing
> gap between them.

Can you give a full example of what you do in pootle currently?
That would help me understand the issue better and maybe come up with
an easier workaround.
(Since adding folder-based view on weblate is nothing you should wait
for - that would likely take a while/if at all...)

Weblate has similar feature, see for example:
https://vm137.documentfoundation.org/translate/libo_help-master/textsdraw04/de/?checksum=f7176f58b13e677f#machine

(But weblate only knows has master translations, thus no strings from
previous versions)

I disagree - while of course the missing features should in the end be
reported in weblate's tracker, it is important that the needs of the
LibreOffice translators get raised here.

And is the plurals form correct? (is the same in pootle and is same in

Doubt that this will be implemented, as weblate is built around that
single-file-component concept.

However I created the next-best-thing that Weblate has to offer for
grouping, namely Component lists for Help project:
https://vm137.documentfoundation.org/#componentlists

Does something like this already help?

Exactly. What was labeled "master" in pootle is used for 6.3 (just
renamed the projects to make that more clear, so now it is not labeled
master anymore). So translations for 6.3 and 6.2 are still in pootle
(and that will stay that way, those won't be migrated away)

Files on Weblate have been updated to reflect master/what will become 6.4

That unfortunately is one of the fundamental design differences in
weblate and nothing we'd be able to change or customize without huge
efforts.
But just imagine we would still be in pre-gettext migration where we
still had 140 files more...

Weblate on the other hand allows you to hide completely translated
components (files) - so maybe that is already enough to make it more
usable for you?

Hint: similar to poolte, weblate has direct/permalink functionality
that is better to use than offset/todo links, as those might change -
and in this case the string that shows up is in Hebrew (but I see the
German strings in the "nearby strings" view)
This is not a bug in weblate or in the migration path, but rather a
problem that already exists in the files on pootle:
https://translations.documentfoundation.org/he/libo_ui/translate/dbaccess/messages.po#unit=137591116
And given the history of the string (or rather the translation memory
entry) it's an old issue, at least since 5.3..
No idea when or how those strings were turned to German...

tldr; no issue with weblate, was already having German stings in the
files from pootle used for the import to weblate

To clarify: while the instance is for evaluating whether we want to
switch to weblate or not (and/or gather what's important to the l10n
community if we want to take a closer look to another solution), the
translations done in that instance are meant to be kept and not thrown
away.
So don't just write "blablabla" as translation, as those will show up
eventually in master builds :-)

That's been there since initial import/update (and since then the
update against templates was changed to no longer use fuzzy matches),
so really wonder what you mean exactly with "lately"/validated without
knowledge of translators...

You'll need to be more specific than that...

For langauges that don't have any plural form configured, see my mail:
https://www.mail-archive.com/l10n@global.libreoffice.org/msg11831.html

But that doesn't allow you to check whether existing entries are
correct, for that see below...

> But for NL, number of plurals is: 2, I guess it's correct.

and also important equation is (n != 1), so quantity of 0 also gets
plural, like German (0 Sekunden, 1 Sekunde, 2 Sekunden, …)

There's a bug/missing feature in pootle that doesn't export the
Plural-Forms header to files downloaded via web, but the files synced
to disk have it. Meaning: You cannot check in files downloaded from
pootle (only the number of plurals, by the number of msgstr[#] lines),
but you can check it in the translations repo:

https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/plugins/gitiles/translations/+/master/source/nl/sw/messages.po

Same for cldr then - I assume it is because of bad formatting in the
samples? Visually they appear the same with my font, but the "C"-like
character is different in the "one" and "other" examples...

So Baurzhan, please file a ticket

If you mean the printf() check - just silence it for that unit (klick
the (-) symbol next to it)

It's a limitation in pootle/translate-toolkit where it cannot tell
whether a %1 needs to be present in the translated string or not when
the English one has one form with no placeholder.

See https://github.com/translate/translate/issues/2736 /

Yes, this makes it available in pootle, but I don't know whether the
plural rules are needed in the po file for proper use of the different
forms, or whether they are just informational for the po-editing tool
and gettext will ignore it and use whatever it knows about the
language.

In other words: I have no idea/didn't check whether the equation is
required or optional for proper use in LO.

(If they are required, then further tweaks to pocheck utility are
necessary, right now it disregards most of the PO-Header and instead
writes its own, possibly stripped-down version when there are errors
in the po-file)

There's no hard rule on that, more like a combination of how it
proceeds / whether that project is active or not and whether the level
of completion is in the areas people will likely see.
I don't know at what percentage we did enable Venetian, but that did
progress so fast

I certainly would not want to integrate something with less than 20%,
since I cannot think that this would be worthwhile user experience.

I wouldn't use "Hilfetext" as translation for tooltip though, esp. since in
other strings it stays at "Tooltip" in the German text as well.

Guess a good candidate for terminology..

That's not really true, as there is no magic involved in this case - I
just use the translate toolkit's commands (pot2po and pomerge) to
merge them, then update the files with those.

There's no additional mechanism in pootle for that. So if you can
download the files and run the commands yourself, you can then upload
your files.

I can do later though (only for really empty strings though - and also
note that strings could have changed considerably, so whatever I do
will only be for exact matches)

[libreoffice-l10n] strings for redesigned donate and download pages available in pootle

2018-05-15 Thread Christian Lohmaier
Hi *,

some of you might have noticed already..

Since a couple of days the strings for the redesigned/combined
download page and the new donate page are now available for
translation in pootle.

https://www.libreoffice.org/download/ example for the new-style donate
page (i.e. both fresh as well as still on a single page, with
hopefullly less "clutter")

and I'm sure you know https://www.libreoffice.org/donate - the
newdesign of the donate page.

For the donate strings, please pay close attention to the default
currency and amounts (DEFAULT_AMOUNT_EUR05, DEFAULT_AMOUNT_EUR10 ,...)

For those please use the appropriate amount that correspons to 5 EUR,
10 EUR,... respectively in your DEFAULT_CURRENCY.

e.g. for Japanese Yen with approximation of 1 EUR = 100 JPY, you would use
DEFAULT_CURRENCY = JPY
DEFAULT_AMOUNT_EUR05 = 500
DEFAULT_AMOUNT_EUR10 = 1000

(actual exchange rate is 130:1 ATM, but it doesn't need to be spot-on,
better have some "easy" numbers than doing exact math)

FYI: that is active now - it doesn't build LibreOffice, it just uses
xmllint to check the xhp files against the dtd, and thus should be

True - that was added recently, and will be added to pootle later
today or tomorrow.

Also true - we wanted to sort out bugs in terms of usability with that
one first, finalize on the design before deploying it to others.

And while I mightnot have replied to your post in particular, I'm
pretty sure that has been stated in the past already.

Same reason basically as with the donate page, we wanted to run some
tests first to make sure it doesn't mess up with the donations that
pay all the bills...
I think we can have the strings of the donate page in pootle same time
as the one with the archive.

We need to make sure that all pages have current data - legal stuff is
annoying sometimes :/

True, sorry for that. But unfortunately we have many nl-sites that are
rather stale, so we cannot wait for everyone in all cases.

There's history of previous versions in silverstripe, so no reason to
be all that upset about changing of pagetype. furthermore there is
waybackmachine or similar, that might also have your page indexed...
