The top nav links don't work in the preview due to how the preview URLs

I certainly manually migrate as much as I can when I work on the Finnish

[libreoffice-l10n] Translation of Calc function wiki articles: reviewer recommended

2023-12-24 Thread Ilmari Lauhakangas
Articles about Calc functions have been gradually improved and provided
for translation over the past few years:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Calc_Functions/List_of_Functions

Now it has been pointed out that errors have slipped into the translated
versions due to lack of review.

As an example, an English source page might say things like "If the
second argument is less than 1, the function results in an error",
whereas the translated page(s) say "If the second argument is equal to
or less than 0, the function results in an error". A mistake in the
numeric value, and another one in the mention of the comparison operator.

These errors seem to be the result of too hasty copying & pasting of
earlier translated strings. Alternatively, it might be a case of picking
a suggestion from the translation memory without checking its accuracy.

It is strongly recommended to tackle the translation of Calc function
articles as a team, with at least one translator reviewing the work of
the other.

Sorry, I quoted the help page incorrectly. The help page does not
currently mention that there is a check for simulated *captions*.

I have submitted a change to the string:
https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/c/core/+/156238

See the code for the checking logic:
https://opengrok.libreoffice.org/xref/core/sw/source/core/access/AccessibilityCheck.cxx?r=8386d8e5#978

To see the string in the UI, open the accessibility sidebar panel.
Type text that starts with Caption, Illustration, Table, Text, Drawing
or Figure

Immediately insert an image.

Now you should see "Fakes" in the sidebar (without my patch).

The check also works, if the image is anchored to the paragraph with the
text.

In German, "Get Involved" is translated into "Mitmachen" in the sidebar,

Please help translate these strings into other languages.

For Persian, these are the translations, in order:

That's a good point about the language-specific parameter separators and
such in the Calc function call examples. I have to keep such examples fully
translatable.

The proper way is to always use the ; semicolon as function parameter
separator that is understood in every localization and environment; if
set differently in the user environment the actual separator will be
displayed when viewing the resulting formula expression again.

To be taken care of and adapted in examples is the decimal separator.

Thanks, then we can save even more work. The decimal separator is taken
care of by the wiki magic word {{formatnum:123.4}}

https://public.paws.wmcloud.org/User:Hog%C3%BC-456/Spreadsheet%20To%20Code%20Converter/Spreadsheetfunctions%20by%20Language/

From my point of view it is great if it is possible to copy a function
example from a Wikipage or a documentation page into calc. In Germany
usually the semicolon is the separator and in other countries it is the
comma in functions. For strings there are also different characters
used. It is the " and the '. Does the separator depend on the language
version or on the settings of a user. Im working since more than two
years at program that converts Spreadsheetfunctions into source code.
With this program if only parts of it are used it is also possible to
transfer a function from one language into another one and changing
through that the separator of function arguments and for strings and
also the notation for a cell from the A1-Format where a cell address
consists out of letters and number into a R1C1-Format where the column
and the row are numbers. Replacing is propably for the examples accurate
enough but it is theoretically possible that a string contains a name
that is also a function name. What will you do with the mentioned cases
where separators are different depending on a criteria I dont know yet.
Will this be a local translation work or is there a possibility to find
it out depending on the language and create a automatically solution to

I guess a separate module could be created to replace the separators
etc. based on language, but it might be tricky (what are the edge cases,
what kind of stuff can appear in a formula). I will not attempt it, but
others are free to take a shot at creating a reliable solution.

[libreoffice-l10n] Wiki module created to save time for Calc function article translators

2022-10-21 Thread Ilmari Lauhakangas

Hello,

during LibreOffice conference 2022 I had a conversation with an Italian
translator. He said it would be nice to import Calc function name
translations into the translation memory of the wiki to speed things up.
I started thinking that it would be even better to automatically get the
correct translated name using a template or a widget. I quickly
understood a template would not be practical. A widget would require
modifying the page content with Javascript, which is always a bit
awkward and also slows down the page load.

While researching the topic, I ran into an extension that enables the
use of Lua programming language to have essentially a much nicer
template syntax: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Scribunto

I set up a local MediaWiki instance to develop the Calc function name
module and now Guilhem kindly enabled the extension in TDF wiki.

The module is called in wiki content like so:

{{#invoke:Calc_fn_name|get|IF|{{#translation:

It calls the module, a function inside it and passes arguments for the
Calc function name and the language code. Conveniently the
{{#translation:}} magic word allows us to automatically pass the correct
language code.

The module code can be examined here:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Module:Calc_fn_name

I will gradually put the module to use in the coming weeks. I have a
Firefox Greasemonkey script to automate replacing the names in content
when editing an article.

Using the module will allow removing many repeating strings from
translation. These function strings which occur on their own are usually
in the beginning and end of the Calc function articles as well as within
tables showing examples.

When a function name occurs inside a paragraph, any existing
translations will be marked as outdated. It is not necessary to copy &
paste the module invocation syntax to the existing translations in this
case. It is enough to just confirm the already translated paragraph.

Steve is working on updating articles, but he does not need to worry
about the module syntax. I will take care of everything when I
eventually mark the new articles for translation.

As the first tries, I changed these pages:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Calc_Functions/List_of_Functions
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Calc_Functions/ABS

As mentioned, when you see outdated translations in your language for
the ABS article, just confirm them, no need to copy the module syntax.

I will wait for a bit before continuing, so let me know if there are any
issues. I will also reach out to individual translators, who already
worked on the articles.

The categories Logical, Information, and Spreadsheet are now translatable.

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Calc_Functions/List_of_Functions

I also created simple templates for words that repeat a lot:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Template:Calc-True

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Template:Calc-Formula
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Template:Calc-Description

I copied the existing translations for them.

I didn't use the Documentation/Calc_Functions path in the name as I
thought it would be better to have compact names when the words appear
in table cells.

There are repeating headings as well. I wonder, if I should make
templates for those as well (this time under
Documentation/Calc_Functions path). Let me know what you think.

Translators can always access the old content for copying from View

wiki [1] to English. I don't have the rights to undo this.

The Finnish wiki main page is not meant to be a translation of the
English main page. How can I get the old page back and prevent bot
misbehaviour in the future?

Tuomas

[1] https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Main_Page/fi

It's not misbehaviour, but part of the migration to Translate extension
that has been going on for years. I have now added blocks to the
beginning and end that are invisible (commented out) in the English
version, so localisers can add unique content. Ie. you can add your own
{{portal box|...}} content box(es) to the beginning and end, which gives
you the possibility to add substantial amounts of localised info to the
main page.

Translators can always access the old content for copying from View
History of the respective translated page. I've already migrated over
French content and will look at others in the coming days.

Machine translation served as suggestion forces a second read before
committing translation.

You were in the team meeting yesterday when we discussed it. Before
going there, we need to investigate on several topics. Following that, I
wanted to open another thread to get feedback on Matecat that you
proposed (thanks :). Testing it this morning, I see it covers a good
list of languages and several formats. Compared to the others, it would
remove the expensive costs of some or legal issues.

I looked more deeply into Matecat now - I never before managed to find
information about the way it uses machine translation. It looks like
Matecat itself will not give us any benefits. See these resources:

https://guides.matecat.com/my

"By default, we provide Google Translate API (we pay for it and offer it
for free to Matecat users). If for any reason the Google Translate API
is not available, we automatically switch to the Microsoft Bing API."

https://guides.matecat.com/machine-translation-engines

It looks like ModernMT is the system that is associated with Matecat
creators:

https://guides.matecat.com/modernmt-mmt-plug-in

It is open source, even though it has a higher quality version for
enterprises:

https://github.com/modernmt/modernmt

Weblate does support it, also with a self-hosted version:

https://github.com/WeblateOrg/weblate/issues/1627#issuecomment-657171205

However, Weblate also supports LibreTranslate, which uses OpenNMT at its
core:

https://libretranslate.com/
https://github.com/LibreTranslate/LibreTranslate

Could you please also evaluate LibreTranslate in addition to ModernMT?

All of the three forms of documentation serve a different purpose.
Quoting from the Season of Docs summary:

"The Calc Guide for LibreOffice release 6.2 contained a lengthy appendix
(70 pages) devoted to the 500+ functions available in Calc, providing a
shallow list of the functions and their arguments. During the update of
the document for release 6.4 in 2019, the Documentation Team agreed that
it would be better to move this list to an online service, and as part
of this move, to enhance the function descriptions by adding more
examples, use cases and collateral information on standards,
compatibility and more."

[libreoffice-l10n] Minor wiki detail: getting rid of translatable categories

2021-10-09 Thread Ilmari Lauhakangas
In the wiki there are category pages in the form of Category:Thing. Most
of these do not contain any explanatory text and the ones that do have
something self-evident like "Pages related to Thing". They are listed in
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Special:Categories

Probably due to a practice of copying & pasting from older pages, some
category pages contain an OrigLang template, which has lead to the
creation of translated category pages. However, they usually don't even
have a translation of the explanatory text (if there even is such a text
in the original).

I would like to remove these unnecessary pages to reduce the complexity
of the wiki. Please let me know, if there are objections to the idea.

Ok, I've added this logic to the html element attributes: lang="{{
.Site.Language.Lang }}" dir="{{ .Site.Language.LanguageDirection |
default "ltr" }}"

...as well as commented out direction specifications in the config.toml.
Commented out, because the site will not build if the languages are
defined, but their content does not exist.

As we are still in the feedback phase, the exact localisation and
content structuring strategy has not been decided. I would expect us to
use separate directories for localised content as in
https://gohugo.io/content-management/multilingual/#translation-by-content-directory

As mentioned in the video, Gerrit 3.4 will have a simplification of the

What is left to the imagination is a preview of the edited site. A link
to it would appear in a Gerrit comment by automation.

Further improvements to Gerrit itself might include

- start editing a particular file directly from the Gitiles file list
- full directory listings and navigation in the file adding dialog, so
you don't have to know what you are after
- ProseMirror plugin for a more word processor -like experience

[libreoffice-l10n] Moving to Special:MyLanguage in wiki page links

2021-06-30 Thread Ilmari Lauhakangas
Some time ago I wrote about possibly using Special:MyLanguage in wiki
page links instead of {{#translation:}}

I have now converted all the links in
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Faq/Base to use the special prefix.

The way it works, explained in the context of the German page
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Faq/Base/de

If you visit the page with the default English wiki language (the
language selector is in the topmost menu with Log in/out), clicking the
page links will lead to the English version. After reaching the English
page, you can click Deutsch from the language menu to see the German
version if you want.

If you change your wiki language before clicking any of the page links
in the FAQ index, the links will either lead to the page in your
preferred language or to the English version in case a translated page
does not yet exist.

I wanted to announce my intention to move to this convention everywhere.
Before starting on the conversion and documentation changes, I will wait
for a couple of weeks to give everyone some time to reflect on the topic.

You can add new files or edit existing files in the Gerrit web

I don't know exactly why the English original is constructed in such a

be careful to put the proper XML tags in the correct places, as they won't

It should be fixed as that sort of splintering is bad for translators. I

[libreoffice-l10n] Localised gallery item titles - yay or nay?

GALLERY: image tooltips/names not translated

If it were to be implemented, localisation information would have to be
somehow included inside the gallery packages. In other words, many
unknowns and moving parts. Also pending the finishing of the migration
to the new gallery package format.

I wanted to ask from the localisation community, do you consider it

Perhaps you want to look at the unreleased version instead. In this
case, you would navigate to a place like
https://dev-builds.libreoffice.org/daily/master/Win-x86_64@tb77-TDF/current/
install the main package and also
LibreOfficeDev_7.1.0.0.alpha0_Win_x64_helppack_qtz.msi

If Eugene wants to translate the UI instead of the help documentation, this
is probably not a good idea.

As far as I know, the daily builds only include English UI, no other languages,
no KeyID.

Just tried reinstalling Win-x86_64@tb77-TDF master build and I am happy

The easiest way is to install the key-id version of Libreoffice.
Key-id versions exist for the alpha or beta versions of a release.
It is the file with qtz instead of the language in the name, like
LibreOfficeDev_7.0.0.0.beta1_Win_x64_helppack_qtz.msi

You can find all the different versions of LibreOffice on
http://downloadarchive.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/old/

In this key-id version you will find codes before (almost) every
UI-item.
You can search for this code in Weblate.
Choose the project and your language and click Search.
Search criteria is “note: vwxyz”. (vwxyz is the code you found for the
UI-item)
This way you find your UI-item for translation.

I hope this is what you like to know.

If I remember correctly, then Special:MyLanguage only works useful when
logged in. Our wiki is by default (logged out) in German. So most
readers will be directed to the German content although that might not
be useful.

But even if we would use English as default language: If you are reading
Russian FAQ pages and click on a link as just a simple reader (no
contributor), then you expect getting to a Russian page and not to a
German/English one.

I'm oppose to that change.

@Floeff: If I remember correctly that decision was made because of
having a German foundation. Most services do use English as default
interface language. Is there a chance that we switch the wiki also to
English?

I'm not sure I understand. TDF wiki is definitely not in German while
logged out.

Anyway, you can test the difference on this page:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Faq/Base
The first listed item uses Special:MyLanguage while the others use
{{#translation:}}

[libreoffice-l10n] Redirection of translated wiki pages

2020-09-16 Thread Ilmari Lauhakangas
It was proposed that wiki links to untranslated pages in the form of
Path/To/MyPage{{#translation:}} should redirect to the translation
interface. I created a feature request for it:
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T263011

As can be seen from the discussion, we have the option to use links in
the form of Special:MyLanguage/Path/To/MyPage

This creates a situation where:

- you have to change your wiki UI language to match the translated pages
you want to visit via these links
- if the translation does not exist, you will be redirected to the
English page
- if you want to visit a specific translated page while using a
different UI language, you have to manually edit the URL in your
browser's address bar after accessing it

- there are no red links

Now, what is the general opinion? Should we switch to using
Special:MyLanguage for all links that refer to translatable pages?

Pootle is going away, so you should not use it.

Regarding Weblate: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/WeblateGuide#Roles

"When we were using Pootle, each language team had an administrator who
was able to manage team's roles. In Weblate, it is currently not

[libreoffice-l10n] Better English term for Sidebar "decks"

2020-03-10 Thread Ilmari Lauhakangas
The word "deck" in "Sidebar deck" seems like a rather unintuitive term
for translators. It mainly brings to mind the Star Trek Holodeck. Are we
running an office suite or a (space)ship? This topic is being discussed
here: https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=131078

Our documentation has not even caught up with the transition from
"window" (as in "Styles window") to "deck", so the terminology and thus
translations are all over the place. "Window" is misleading as we are
essentially talking about different states in a panel.

I see in the Finnish translation we currently use a term analogous to
"deck of cards", "pile" or "bow of a ship".

What came to my mind as a more translator-friendly term is "view".

Thoughts from localisers?

2019-11-19 Thread Ilmari Lauhakangas
Sophie and Christian can answer the bug documentation question, but I
thought I would point out some things that show our wishes are fairly
well aligned with Weblate's roadmap.

Michal recently commented on an issue that was discussed on this list
early in the testing: grouping things.

"Typical example which would utilize some kind of nesting is LibreOffice."
https://github.com/WeblateOrg/weblate/issues/263#issuecomment-548916222
The issue was labeled "undecided" before this comment.

Michal is considering switching to PostgreSQL, which would probably be
very nice in our case (better performance, less memory use on the
server). Also: "Another nice benefit of switching to Postgres might be
using Amagama instead of writing translation memory service on our own".

broken

into smaller units. Please pick the earlier version from the

To make things a bit less painful, I will add some often-repeated

As a positive thing, the translations are now in smaller units,

so

there will be less annoying wiki markup for the translators to

see

while they work. I scripted the addition of elements

to

table cells and manually did the rest. I did not aim for a 100%
perfectionist approach, because it would have been too much work.

And now, to my horror, I realise that the yes/no/partial templates

had

been used incorrectly in the page. I should have fixed the use of

the

templates before marking the page for translation. Unfortunately,

I

will be unable to do this before Monday next week. I hope it is

not an

inconvenience, but please refrain from touching the translations

until

I fix things.

I will have to
1. enable translations for the templates themselves
2. translate their texts to the languages I mentioned in the

previous

email
3. make it so the template instances in the table cells are always

of

the format {{yes}}, so all additional text is always outside the
instance
4. refer to the templates using the form {{yes{{#translation:,

so

the desired translation will be picked from the template

translation

All right, I managed to sneak in several hours of work during the
weekend after all. Thanks to Adolfo, who intervened at a time the
behaviour of MediaWiki had me completely confused regarding the
translation of templates.

So now the templates

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Template:Yes
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Template:No
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Template:Partial

have translations in es, fr, ja, ko, ru, sl, tr, zh-tw and zh-hans
(and
some extra ones thanks to Adolfo). I am not 100% sure about Partial
in
zh-tw and zh-hans, so do correct me if I messed it up.

The cache for the translated Feature comparison pages has been
busted by

Weblate has similar feature, see for example:

(But weblate only knows has master translations, thus no strings from
previous versions)

That is one feature of pootle that I will mis than.

The translation memory from previous versions can be imported:
https://docs.weblate.org/en/latest/admin/memory.html

Translation memory scopes

New in version 3.2: The different translation memory scopes are
available since Weblate 3.2, prior to this release translation memory
could be only loaded from file corresponding to the current imported
translation memory scope.

The translation memory scopes are there to allow both privacy and
sharing of translations, depending on the actual desired behavior.

Imported translation memory

You can import arbitrary translation memory data using import_memory
command. The memory content will be available for all users and projects.

https://docs.weblate.org/en/latest/admin/management.html#django-admin-import_memory

manage.py import_memory

Imports a TMX or JSON file into the Weblate Translation Memory.

--language-map LANGMAP

Allows to map languages in the TMX to Weblate one. The language
codes are mapped after normalization usually done by Weblate.

For example --language-map en_US:en will import all en_US strings
as en ones.

This can be useful in case your TMX file locales does not match
what you use in Weblate.

I am sure Pootle takes patches, there is no need to fork (it is not

[libreoffice-l10n] Wiki translation tech newsletter

2019-06-24 Thread Ilmari Lauhakangas
Welcome to another edition of "emails full of wiki translation tech
jargon"! Let's see, what our elite team of wiki researchers has
accomplished since the last one.

- Thanks to Guilhem, we can now set the source language of a page to
something else besides English!

1. Visit https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Special:PageLanguage
2. Start inputting the page path into the "Page" field and pick the page
3. Select language

- We will get the automatic adding of the languages menu only after June
2020, because we are targetting LTS releases of MediaWiki:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Version_lifecycle

- The topic of copying the contents of a translatable page without the
tags came up and a solution was found. To achieve this, add
/en to the path of the page like so:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/6.3/en and edit the page.
You should always do a fresh start for a new page, never bringing in old
automatically generated translation tags.

[libreoffice-l10n] Moving to Translate extension in the wiki: call for help

2019-05-16 Thread Ilmari Lauhakangas

Hello teams,

as you may know, we are slowly moving to a new wiki translation workflow
provided by Translate extension. It offers an experience familiar to us
from Pootle and similar systems: translation memory, immediate display
of outdated content etc. It is a robust system, having seen 14 years of
development.

I thought it would be a crucial step in the migration to stop luring
people into creating new translations with the old system. I went
through lots of pages that use the OrigLang template and removed it from
pages without translations (using a semi-automated technique with
JavaScript). A complete list of pages with OrigLang is here:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:OrigLang

It then occurred to me that tackling pages with a single translation
would be the easiest next step. This email is my call for help to these
teams: Arabic, Chinese (simplified), Czech, Danish, French, German,
Italian, Japanese, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Spanish and Turkish. At
the end on this email I have included a selection of pages with only a
single translation, grouped by language. I have curated the lists,
skipping some obsolete stuff, but they are not 100% combed through.

The lists were produced by taking every entry from here
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Lang
finding the unique ones with some shell scripting and sorting with
trusty old Calc at the very end.

Here is a tutorial on using Translate extension on a page:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Extension:Translate/Page_translation_example

Adding this element will render a language menu:

In the future, we could skip adding the element, though:
https://redmine.documentfoundation.org/issues/2882

The old translations are not lost, when a page is modified to use the
new translation system. You can migrate the old ones using this tool:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Special:PageMigration

On a page using the new system, after you update the content you will
see a notice at the top of the page: "This page has changes since it was
last marked for translation". Click the link "marked for translation",
review the displayed changes and click the button "Mark this version for
translation" found at the end of the page.

Here you can see all the pages currently using the new system:

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Broken assumptions about menu structure in help content

2019-05-16 Thread Ilmari Lauhakangas
With a limited time budget, I would say focus on any module expect
Impress & Draw. Some tasks are easier than others. Try to pick something
that requires the least amount of structural churn. Maybe only update
text content that has direct mentions to menu paths and skip the
embeddable "how to get" definitions etc.

There are also changes in context menus. Perhaps some items have simply
been removed - thus very easy to update.

My script for checking fileopen & filesave regressions was merged to
dev-tools: https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/#/c/71069/
It is found inside the /qa directory, if you clone the project from

Hello Ilmari, *,

I would be happy to help too, but I'm afraid, I have no much time even
in the next 2 weeks at least.

But it would be great to see one of my pet bugs goes before 6.3 freeze
arrives:

https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=92825

What can I do (even with little time for now) for achieving this?

BTW: How is your work with the shell script ongoing?

Currently most of the help content referring to menus is incorrect and
has been for years. One reason for this sad situation is that due to
ancient structural decisions, it is outrageously difficult to adapt
the content to changes.

Here is the story in a nutshell:

1. The help system is architected. Repetition in content related to
menu items is avoided by clever structuring (hooray! the savings!)
2. Content is added, references to menus spread far and wide
3. Menu item locations are changed in a massive redesign operation,
making the help content obsolete

The pain is mostly caused by assumptions that certain menus of certain
modules are identical. Impress and Draw are the most problematic in
this regard.

Then we have the "how to access" pages with increasingly mixed
content. Consider the one for Edit menu, which now contains wonderful
entries like "Choose Edit - ImageMap in Writer and Calc or Tools -
ImageMap in Impress and Draw" or entries referring to a completely
different menu like "Choose Tools - Bibliography Database" and "Choose
View - Navigator".
https://helponline.libreoffice.org/6.3/en-US/text/shared/00/edit_menu.html

We need a system, where the help content concerning the location of
menu items is automatically generated from the menu bar definition
files. If shared information on menus is desired, it needs to be
produced automatically.

The reason I add l10n list in Cc is that I want to raise awareness of
the current situation. Having incorrect information translated into
nearly 200 languages just multiplies the number of negative
experiences. Translators cannot fix this on the level of strings, it
needs to be dealt with structurally. It would be great, if members
from the stronger translation teams (de, fr, id...) would participate
in the current manual effort on fixing the menu help information.

Here are a few patches from me that show, how the changes can be done:
https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/#/c/68830/
https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/#/c/71436/
https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/#/c/71703/

If people get interested, I can offer assistance.

[libreoffice-l10n] Intention to rename some help files

2019-03-08 Thread Ilmari Lauhakangas
I am working on bringing Impress/Draw help content up to date with some
of the menu changes. I intend to rename the files I touch to something
understandable. You may want to sue me in the international criminal
court of fuzzy translations, but I really feel the file names in the
style of "0118" make working with help content unnecessarily painful.

The changes would only target 6.3 and happen before its string freeze.
