I certainly manually migrate as much as I can when I work on the Finnish
translation and anyone can do the same.

Yes, but this is tedious and I'm afraind most of translators will not do
it. If possible, it would be perfect to put current website translations
into the translation memory to have them available as suggestions in
Weblate.

thanks, I was not aware that there is already this request. I agree
that this is the solution - to control the possibility to add string
to all languages (maybe based on permissions).

Meanwhile, I realized that deletion of the strings does not affect
other languages, so it will work for our team, even if it is annoying

not sure how much it helps, but in my opinion these points would
improve the translation a lot:
- employing machine translation,
- sharing translation memory (now Weblate, wiki and user guides are
completely separated),
- reusing existing translations (current suggestions in Weblate do not
work if e.g. a string is split or markup is added, even if the content
is preserved),
- more flexibility when customizing the tools (cf. the Weblate
improvements tendering) and dealing with the infrastructure problems.

[libreoffice-l10n] Weblate glossaries policy

2023-12-21 Thread Stanislav Horáček

Hi,

I would like to ask if there is a policy for adding strings to
glossaries shared across all languages (i.e. the strings marked with the
"terminology" flag).

Currently, there are many terminology strings which are not useful at
all, only cluttering the glossaries (check yourself e.g. [1]). They are
being added continuously and I deleted some of them, but I think it
should be more controlled what is going in. In the glossary itself, I
found a sentence suggesting that the initial idea was to use the shared
part only rarely [2].

What are your opinions?

Stanislav

[libreoffice-l10n] Weblate - editing suggestions

2022-12-04 Thread Stanislav Horáček

Hi,

I know this was already reported before, but the problem is still there:
when editing a suggestion in Weblate, then saving of that suggestion
takes too long (maybe tens of seconds). When the suggestion is accepted
without edits, it is saved immediately.

A workaround is to copy the text, reject the suggestion and enter the
translation yourself - which is quite discouraging for the suggester (no
credits for him), but still better than to waste time.

Thanks for any help,
Stanislav

P.S.: I feel that all such reports to this list are forgotten sooner or
later. Is there a more suitable way how to report Weblate issues? (e.g.
Redmine for the infrastructure?)

No, it is not that string on weblate. What I mean is that, when I click
on the Help > Get Help Online menu item, the following webpage opens:

https://hub.libreoffice.org/forum/?LOlocale=zh-CN

And then it was immediately redirected to another link which may have
been defined in somewhere else other then weblate. I remember some years
ago there was a email requesting that the l10n team provide the support
link for their language, and we have provided
https://bbs.libreofficechina.org/. However, now we want to switch to
https://zh-cn.libreoffice.org/get-help/community-support/ as it provides
more support channels.

1. I have a file with let's say 60 untranslated strings (the number

I can't reproduce the issue so maybe I'm missing something.
Do you mean that after uploading the file that you translated offline
the number of strings to translate is wrong or is it you translated
online and when coming back to the file list, the number is wrong?
The problem you reported before displayed an error message, is it still
the case here?

Cheers

sorry for the possible confusion, it has nothing to do with uploading
files - happens after translating in Weblate only. Today I checked it
again, it started to happen after translating 3-4 string (one was not
enough).

This is perfectly reproducible for me, maybe related to our language or
so if no one else can observe this - ?

The previously reported problem ("source string was changed" and loss of
translation) still happens and it is related I think, because when this
error message is shown, the number of unfinished strings is changed the
same way.

Anyway, thanks for your interest and help:))

Well, I assume it is because the source string changed - of course
hard to tell exactly, but I do tend to update the templates more
frequently than in the past.

Concrete examples would help figuring out whether that's the case or not.

I encountered this problem again with the usual scenario: first tens of
strings go smoothly, then the error message happened when I accessed the
untranslated strings in the file [1] (i.e. by the link [2]) and then
tried to save the string [3]. I think the third attempt to save it was
successful - so I am not sure how much this helps if it is not
reproducible and if all strings of that file are translated now.

Apart from that, there is still the issue reported here [4], but I guess
that it is already on your radar.

and not an application? Its modules (Writer, Calc, ...) are
programs/applications ... Also, macros can be considered applications
themselves ... At least in Slovenian verbatim translation of this strings
doesn't make much sense.

I am considering translating it as "Makri LibreOffice" (aka "LibreOffice
Macros"), hard-coding the LibreOffice string in there, because this is
actually what they are (these built-in macros do not change with other
vendors' office suite versions).

How do other l10n teams localize this string?

I decided to translate it as "Makra aplikace". I agree that it is
ambiguous, but I think that still better than mixing "LibreOffice" with
possibly different product name (I perceive that macros as related to a
particular software installation).

In my case (pt-BR), machine translation supersedes weblate translation

yes, I agree that machine translation is powerful and this reminds me
another idea: on hosted Weblate [1] (where also Collabora Online is
hosted), also machine translations (from Google, Microsoft and my
favourite DeepL) are shown in "Automatic suggestions".

Would it be possible to add this feature also to TDF's Weblate? Or - if
it was already considered, what was the conclusion about it?

[libreoffice-l10n] Weblate - missing suggestions from translation memory?

2022-02-19 Thread Stanislav Horáček

Hi,

when translating new strings in Weblate, I encounter that the
suggestions from translation memory are not reliable.

For instance, I have two Help strings [1] and [2] that were affected
only by the change from "%PRODUCTNAME Macros" to "Application Macros"
(this commit: [3]) - so I would expect that the previous translations
for "%PRODUCTNAME" will be offered by the suggestions from translation
memory.

It works perfectly for the string [1], whereas for the string [2], after
a long time of loading (about few minutes, which is not acceptable
anyway) no suggestion is received.

The workaround is clear: I have to go to old downloaded translated
files, find the string there and copy the old translation - not needed
to mention that the effectivness of the translation process is gone. I
experience that this happens for longer, but also for too short strings.

Could anyone confirm this or look at it? I am afraid that this can waste
many already translated strings that could be easily modified and used...

Thank you,
Stanislav

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] Can we delete entries from TM?

2021-04-15 Thread Stanislav Horáček

Hi,

Dne 15. 04. 21 v 21:22 Mihail Balabanov napsal(a):

Hi,

Is there any way to edit Weblate's TM to remove erroneous or obsolete
translations? Sometimes we change terminology, or punctuation, or spaces,
making translations obsolete. More often than not, I click Save and after
that I realize that I have made a typo or that the translation should be
changed to match something that comes up several strings later.

Nevertheless, the old version of every translation I entered stays in the
TM. These obsolete translations gradually pile up and seriously increase my
cognitive load because I have to read them all carefully to decide what to
use every time I use the TM for a similar string (or the string gets
cosmetically changed *again*).

So, is there any way to delete unnecessary entries, or to 'reset' the TM to
only the strings that are currently used in the projects on Weblate,
discarding all strings that are not currently used in any project?

Cheers,
Mihail

PS Also, it would be a great help if it was possible to highlight the
differences between the English version of the current string and TM's
suggestions. Currently, I have to do that manually by copying them to a
diff app for every single string.

regarding the highlighting of differences, this issue is about it:
https://github.com/WeblateOrg/weblate/issues/4368

I agree that this would speed up translating a lot.

Best regards,
Stanislav

[libreoffice-l10n] Deleted translations in Help for master

2020-01-23 Thread Stanislav Horáček

Hi,

there is something strange with Weblate. After the update of source
strings yesterday, some translations of Help that were made during the
last week disappeared in the project "master", whereas they remained in
the projects "6.3" and "6.4".

These translations were done in "master" and were propagated into "6.3"
and "6.4" automatically (the Weblate feature). Specifically: language
"cs", strings for table with document format starting with [1] for
master, [2] for 6.4.

(One week ago, I noticed the same behavior, so it is not a temporary issue.)

Do I really need to retranslate all of them in master? Could you look at
this?

thanks! The glossary is really available and working.
Some of my thoughts about it:
- glossary is related to particular project, it would be good to have
one common (requested here [1]),
- match of terms is done by single words, not whole phrases in glossary
(requested here [2]),
- comments from submitted PO file are removed and not used in glossary,
even if they would be useful to describe context of different translations.

And I really appreciate the new hardware - the problems with performance
are now away!

In terms of what? I find it is sometimes slow when a lot of strings are
loaded in zen mode.

The most important are saving translated strings (and going to the next
one) and searching in strings - they are significantly slower than the
same actions in Pootle (based on my today's experience, it could be
temporary).

- translation memory and terminology are not included (should we add
them ourselves?),

It would have to be done by someone.

- instructions for translating refer to old Pootle, e.g. [1].

https://docs.weblate.org/en/latest is a honest attempt at documenting
Weblate.

Is addressing of these issues planned? In other words, is it worth to
wait with translation, or should we live with what we have now?

Depends what you mean. Translations are not saved on the demo interface
now AFAIK.

If e.g. translation memory is going to be added, then it makes sense to
wait for the addition - otherwise I will start to translate without it.

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] Fixing new spell out numbering styles in LibreOffice 6.1

2018-05-03 Thread Stanislav Horáček

Hi,

great initiative, thanks!

Dne 3.5.2018 v 18:57 Németh László napsal(a):

Hi,

LibreOffice 6.1 will support “spell out” numbering styles of OOXML (One,
Two...; First, Second..., 1st, 2nd...),
as you can see in the following screen cast (only English, French and
German examples):

  https://youtu.be/c0j4Sjie8t4

My questions to the native language speakers:

1. Are these numbers correct in your language?

You can check here, too: https://numbertext.github.io/
index.html#testimonials

Not correct for Czech: all words should be modified for ordinal numbers
while it is the case for the last one only; there are also incorrect
details in another categories.

2. Do we need to change the default format etc. according to the normal
usage of your country/language variant?

For example, in the recent implementation, British English and American
English differ with the “and”

101 -> “One hundred and one”: en-AU, en-GB, en-IE, en-NZ
101 -> “One hundred one”: en-US etc.

3. Is it enough to support only a single gender in Spanish etc. languages
to cover common outline and page number usage in publishing?

Book/Part/Chapter/Section/Page/Paragraph One, or simply One (normal usage
in English outline numbering)
First Book/Part/Chapter/Section/Page/Paragraph (less common in English, but
default numbering styles cover this, too)

I assume that support for all genders is needed, in Czech both masculine
and feminine are commonly used for the outline numbering.

Best regards,
Stanislav

Note: there is a plan to use similar spell out formats in currency and date
formats of Writer, typical in contracts and invoices in several
languages. These formats are only supported in Calc yet by the NUMBERTEXT
Calc extension (or also in Writer macros via the new
com.sun.star.linguistic2.NumberText
service).

Best regards,
László

P.S: A recent question (comes from Rene Engelhard) for Hebrew contributors:

Is the Hebrew correct in the next line of resource file of the Numbertext
Calc extension:

NUMBERTEXT() וMONEYTEXT() פונקציות גליון Calc

[libreoffice-l10n] Confusing string "Enable Content" in master

2018-03-24 Thread Stanislav Horáček

Hi,

I don't understand to the new Calc's string "Enable Content" [1] which
labels the button for infobar with the question "This file contains
links to other files or external resources. Should they be updated?".

Why is not a clear label (like "Update Links") there?

Thank you,
Stanislav

Hi,

I found out that the information about paths to source code files with
the strings to translate is now missing in Pootle. This is a drawback
of the (surely necessary) migration to gettext - strings are now
stored in messages.po files which does not correspond anymore with the
structure of the source code.
(In some cases, the path can be derived from file name, e.g. .ui files
lives in uiconfig/ui/, but this is not 100%.)

This broke my workflow, as I am used to jump often to the Github
history of the file corresponding with a translated string (its URL is
created by a JavaScript bookmarklet using data from a current Pootle
page). By that, I got very useful overview of the change (e.g. if it
is cosmetic or not), I could check related bugzilla reports to see
what a new feature should do and where to find it in UI etc.

Does anyone else miss the paths? And would it be possible to give them
back, i.e. to save them together with file name when generating .po
files?

Best regards,

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] How do I get to Libreoffice Online?

Hi Michael,

Dne 17.9.2017 v 16:15 Michael Wolf napsal(a):

a website only or must I anything install? I translated it into Upper
Sorbian and Lower Sorbian half a year ago and a Czech user confirmed
that they are already used. I would like to inform Sorbian users about
this.

I'm sorry that I forgot to answer you, because it was my note about the
translation (my nickname is "strepon").

I meant compilation of pure LibreOffice Online from source code which
requires also compilation of the LibreOffice core. This is not
straightforward (moreover, currently I can't make LO Online run even if
the compilation goes well), but it should allow to test all available
languages.

Apart from that, I use the demo provided by Collabora, which consists of
LO Online integrated with OwnCloud. But this version seems to allow only
the choice of languages that are available as OwnCloud localization.

Or does someone know if this limitation can be overcome?

Best regards,
Stanislav

for most locales, formatting code for the "Percent" category in Calc is

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] [PROPOSAL] New project for dictionaries

2016-04-25 Thread Stanislav Horáček

Hi Dennis,

I strongly support your idea. For our Czech language, the dictionary has
not been updated for many years and no one maintains it. So we were
thinking about a webpage where users would give their feedback and
propose new words. If there was an infrastructure for that provided by
TDF, it would be extremely helpful.

Thanks,
Stanislav

Dne 25.4.2016 v 12:13 Dennis Roczek napsal(a):

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Hello community,

I was having some discussions with dictionary maintainers and come to a
completely new idea for a new project!

The TL;DR version: Provide a central place for dictionaries maintainers
including useful tools plus a possibility for easier collaboration.

The long version: LibreOffice uses dictionaries based on Hunspell.
Hunspell is a free, open source project. Many applications do support
Hunspell based dictionaries. The following list (but not
exclusive) of applications supporting Hunspell based dictionaries is
shameless copied from the German Wikipedia:
* AOO
* LibO
* Mozilla products
** Thunderbird
** Seamonkey
** Firefox
* Latex IDEs: WinShell, TexWorks, LyX, Texmaker, TeXstudio, etc.
* Google Chrome
* The Bat
* Emacs
* Opera Web Browsr
* Apple Mac OS X 10.6+
* Adobe InDesign
* Adobe FrameMaker
* SoftMaker Office
* Scribus
and many, many more applications.

Some applications additional provide their own dictionary extension page
to download dictionaries. Moreover depending on the applications, the
dictionary have to be differently packed (simplest example is a
different file extensions)

Some projects do maintain their extension separately (independently).
Also the user who wants to propose a change / an addition has mostly no
easy solution to find out whom to contact to get another word added.

The basis idea is to provide a portal which provides tools to pack the
word lists to dictionaries automatically by scripts and - if possible -
to update and upload the new version of the dictionary to the download
pages. (e.g. the extension centre of AOO / LO or Mozilla's page) The
portal should provide a way for users to help the maintainers and
proposing new words or contact the maintainer if there are errors in the
word list.

The manual work of packaging the extension is very time consuming and
moreover leads to situations that there might be multiple maintained
versions for the same language. By providing tools to create a new
version of the dictionary the maintainer can invest their time in
improving the dictionary and release easily more often a new version.

I'm eager to hear what do you thing about this idea.

Regards,

Dennis Roczek

[libreoffice-l10n] Idea: link to file history in Pootle

2016-04-18 Thread Stanislav Horáček
Hi,

when translating in Pootle, I often go to history of corresponding
files at Github to get more information about particular string (e.g.
to find out if it is a cosmetic or real change etc.). Hence, it would
be very helpful if Pootle had direct links to file history (to Github
or Opengrok or whatever); information about file location for each
string is already there.

Do you think the history links would be useful? Could they be
implemented in Pootle?

Thanks for any opinion,

there are also hundreds of the strings with differently placed tags and

Are these strings planned to be translated automatically as well?

But as it is time til August, not urgent (doesn't need to be done this

This is not completely true - the issue with the "l10n" and "oldref"

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] "Hit apply to update" string

2016-01-20 Thread Stanislav Horáček

Hi,

Dne 19.1.2016 v 15:16 Yury Tarasievich napsal(a):

There are (still) lots of artifacts of a string kind in LO, I believe.

However, if you do not know the string is actually displayed, how do you
know there is nothing appropriate to click?

because the string is on the Online update page and it can be seen by
displaying the file cui/uiconfig/ui/optonlineupdatepage.ui in Glade.

Generally -- is there any way to mark the actually unused strings, so as
to waste not the effort? Some script processing the sources?..

I suppose the best way is to fix the problem directly in the source code
(or to file a bugzilla report if I am not able to do so myself).

Best regards,
Stanislav

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] "Hit apply to update" string

I see my question should have been clearer - so: is the string
incorrect because there is no "apply" to be hit (and the string should
be modified), or am I missing anything?

Sorry for bothering the list with such a marginal string (which is
maybe even not shown in UI), but I don't like any blind translation.

[libreoffice-l10n] "Hit apply to update" string

2016-01-17 Thread Stanislav Horáček

Hi,

could anyone explain meaning of this new string in 5.1?

"Hit apply to update"
ID: rEEs5
Link:
https://translations.documentfoundation.org/cs/libo_ui/translate/cui/uiconfig/ui.po#unit=101046413

I suppose it is a placeholder text for user agent information (Tools -
Options - LibreOffice - Online updates) which appears when the user
agent is changed (although I don't know how it can be changed) - but
there is no "apply" to be hit...

Thanks,

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] separator of arguments for functions in USA locale

2015-12-11 Thread Stanislav Horáček

Hi,

I found this issue when investigating this bug [1]. The original
separator was semicolon (which is reflected in Help) and later it has
been made dependent on locale (and changed to comma for en-US) [2].

My opinion: for now, I would stick with the current state even if it is
not optimal. Changing Help would be very huge task (I'm not sure if it
can be automated; and of course all translations need to be kept).
Changing default settings does not make sense if the Help inaccuracy is
the only reason for that.

Hi everyone,

I have a strange question, but, in my opinion, we have a very big trouble in
our Help.
All functions have semicolon (;) as the separator of arguments in the Help for
the USA locale . But If Options (Tools -> Options -> Language Setting ->
Locale setting) are set in English (USA), then comma (,) is the separator of
argument (See Tools -> Options -> LibreOffice Calc -> Function).

We need to change either all functions of the Help or USA locale by default.

Where is the mistake?

Hi,

Changing Help would be very huge task (I'm not sure if it
can be automated;

This is a very simple task and can be automated. The task execution will take
about a few minutes and will need about an hour for the Help test, if I will
not hurry ;)

if you can do this, then no problem:)) Now I see that this could be
automated by using a list of function names and replacing semicolons
between parenthesis - or do you have any smarter method?

and of course all translations need to be kept).

If chenges do not touch on paragraph IDs, you need to only confirm the
correctness of a translation.

I am afraid that the confirmation of hundreds of sentences (i.e.
thousands of words) due to the semicolon change is something not
acceptable for translators (but maybe the confirmation can be avoided).

[libreoffice-l10n] Pootle: downloaded files do not contain latest changes

2015-12-05 Thread Stanislav Horáček

Hi,

I've noticed that if I download .po files from Pootle for offline use,
they do not contain the latest changes. For instance, the string #AAWcZ
is translated to Czech in Pootle (the translation was made less than 1
day ago):

https://translations.documentfoundation.org/cs/libo_ui/translate/officecfg/registry/data/org/openoffice/Office/UI.po#unit=100846813

However, in files downloaded from:
https://translations.documentfoundation.org/export/?path=/cs/libo_ui/

the translation of this string is empty.

Is there any delay for propagation of changes into exported files? And
can this be avoided somehow?

insert it into my doc, likely noting its codenumber... so for me
:U_1234: is quiker than any other name I did not memorize.

Yet another useless resource in LibreOffice.

I'm used to enter some characters as Unicode numbers (Ctrl+Shift+U1234

typing few bad trials followed by searching on web or in the special

with local tools or on special request. There won't be automatic
 merges back to master.

I suppose it means that master is the preferred way - and that's
really different from what was promised in discussion about master:

before the branch-off of 4-5 the translations of 4-4 will be copied to

Could you please give us clear information what workflow should be

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] Search themes for Personas / Personalization, translate .. or not .. (bug 87597)

Hi,

I think the labels should be translated (to have UI translated
consistently) and the original terms should be searched (that's why I
filled the bug:). On the other hand, I agree that a user can be confused
if he gets meaningful results using the translated labels, but no
results for translated own search.

One more point - it seems that capitalization matters and capitalized
keyword (the current state) gets substantially less results.

The suggestions there
pxhJi Abstract | BDTdC Color | GjKFW Music | kCoME Nature
are translated so there's little to find when I use the Dutch UI :)

Now it's simple to change that for Dutch, but there are two more options:
  - make the words non localizable,
  - search for the original term, independent of the localization :)

I would appreciate opinions on this.

Thanks a lot,

Re: Fwd: [libreoffice-l10n] Help text for MIDB

Thanks a lot!

I've submitted the suggestions to Gerrit, where anyone is welcome to
comment them:

https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/#/c/14092/

Stanislav

Dne 20.1.2015 v 02:25 Jesper Hertel napsal(a):

Here are my suggestions for examples for MIDB, LEFTB, RIGHTB and LENB.

I actually made a spreadsheet in LibreOffice Calc and tested each
expression to be absolutely sure of the results. The spreadsheet I made
can be found at [1]. I made it using the English (US) user interface and
locale.

[1]: http://www49.zippyshare.com/v/YbkWBbkZ/file.html

It turned out that invalid requests (half DBCS characters) actually do
*not* result in empty strings but rather in a *space character*.

Therefore these suggested examples and explanations.

The return values are the *actual* return values using the actual
mentioned expressions and were therefore *not* typed by hand (check the
spreadsheet if you want to see how). Note the rather subtle spaces returned.

MIDB(中国,1,0) returns (0 bytes is always an empty string).
MIDB(中国,1,1) returns (1 byte is only half a DBCS character and
therefore the result is a space character).
MIDB(中国,1,2) returns 中 (2 bytes constitute one complete DBCS
character).
MIDB(中国,1,3) returns 中 (3 bytes constitute one and a half DBCS
character; the last byte results in a space character).
MIDB(中国,1,4) returns 中国 (4 bytes constitute two complete DBCS
characters).
MIDB(中国,2,1) returns (byte position 2 is not at the beginning of
a character in a DBCS string; 1 space character is returned).
MIDB(中国,2,2) returns (byte position 2 points to the last half of
the first character in the DBCS string; the 2 bytes asked for therefore
constitutes the last half of the first character and the first half of
the second character in the string; 2 space characters are therefore
returned).
MIDB(中国,2,3) returns 国 (byte position 2 is not at the beginning
of a character in a DBCS string; a space character is returned for byte
position 2).
MIDB(中国,3,1) returns (byte position 3 is at the beginning of a
character in a DBCS string, but 1 byte is only half a DBCS character and
a space character is therefore returned instead).
MIDB(中国,3,2) returns 国 (byte position 3 is at the beginning of a
character in a DBCS string, and 2 bytes constitute one DBCS character).
MIDB(office,2,3) returns ffi (byte position 2 is at the beginning of
a character in a non-DBCS string, and 3 bytes of a non-DBCS string
constitute 3 characters).

LEFTB(中国,1) returns (1 byte is only half a DBCS character and a
space character is returned instead).
LEFTB(中国,2) returns 中 (2 bytes constitute one complete DBCS
character).
LEFTB(中国,3) returns 中 (3 bytes constitute one DBCS character and
a half; the last character returned is therefore a space character).
LEFTB(中国,4) returns 中国 (4 bytes constitute two complete DBCS
characters).
LEFTB(office,3) returns off (3 non-DBCS characters each consisting
of 1 byte).

RIGHTB(中国,1) returns (1 byte is only half a DBCS character and a
space character is returned instead).
RIGHTB(中国,2) returns 国 (2 bytes constitute one complete DBCS
character).
RIGHTB(中国,3) returns 国 (3 bytes constitute one half DBCS
character and one whole DBCS character; a space is returned for the
first half).
RIGHTB(中国,4) returns 中国 (4 bytes constitute two complete DBCS
characters).
RIGHTB(office,3) returns ice (3 non-DBCS characters each consisting
of 1 byte).

LENB(中) returns 2 (1 DBCS character consisting of 2 bytes).
LENB(中国) returns 4 (2 DBCS characters each consisting of 2 bytes).
LENB(office) returns 6 (6 non-DBCS characters each consisting of 1
byte).

If anyone else is curious, 中国 means China in Chinese – according to
Google Translate :-).

Hi,

I agree that these examples are really useful. Could you provide also
some examples for the other functions dealing with DBCS (LEFTB, RIGHTB,
LENB)?

If so, I will add them to the Help text.

Thanks!
Stanislav

Dne 19.1.2015 v 16:11 Jesper Hertel napsal(a):

B1 = MIDB(A1,1,2) returns 中
B1 = MIDB(A1,1,3) returns 中
B1 = MIDB(A1,1,4) returns 中国

Thanks for the examples, Kevin! I was afraid they wouldn't go through the
maling list system, so that was why I didn't supply any. But yours are even
better than the ones I would have thought of providing.

I think it is better up to the localizer to translate this help text
according to their needs, for example Japanese team may show how this works
with Japanese chars.

I agree that the specific translation is up to the localizers. But even
people using a non-DBCS user interface language, such as English or Danish,
could want to use that function and could want to know what it is about and
how to use it; they could work with Japanese or another DBCS language
without having the user interface in that language. So I still believe the
English text could be improved. Both regarding the earlier mentioned
sentence and regarding the addition of several actual DBCS examples similar
to the good ones you provided. Maybe just worded and expanded like this to
show that the position argument is also counted in bytes and not in
character positions:

MIDB(中国,1,1) returns (1 byte is only half a character and it is
therefore discarded).
MIDB(中国,1,2) returns 中 (2 bytes are one complete character).
MIDB(中国,1,3) returns 中 (3 bytes are one character and a half; the last
byte is discarded).
MIDB(中国,1,4) returns 中国 (4 bytes are two complete characters).
MIDB(中国,2,1) returns (byte position 2 is not at the beginning of a
character).
MIDB(中国,2,2) returns (byte position 2 is not at the beginning of a
character).
MIDB(中国,3,1) returns (byte position 3 is at the beginning of a
character, but 1 byte is only half a character and is therefore discarded).
MIDB(中国,3,2) returns 国.

And yes, I do believe that this rather large amount of examples are
necessary to make it completely clear how this rather technical function
works, and that the Help should be the place for such an explanation.

Whether my explanations in parentheses are understandable or relevant I
don't know. It is an attempt to explain what is happening to the
not-so-technical users, but even also to technical users that want to be
sure they understood it right.

them.

Yes me too. Shopie´s explanation make it even more difficult to understand
the procedure.

Since I do my own compilation, for me it will mean that all strings will
be updated periodically in pootle under the master branch. So I will
get the updates once in a day/week/month, for example.

The number of strings on a monthly basis are expected to be lower than
on updated once in a half-year for a major release.

Those who will translate the master branch can check the results with
the nighly builds.

when it comes to branch for a new release, a snapshot of the master
translation will be taken and named release X.Y. Then all translation of
the release follows. Like with developers, a fix in a translation on a
branch shall be fixed also in master branch.

This workflow means that everyone is forced to work on master -
otherwise it is needed to translate the same strings again and again in
branches which makes no sense.

And that's why I am confused - because we were assured that it will be
possible to choose between working on master and working on branches.

This scheme does not means we will get less work, it means we will get
more time to translate a big, hopefully incremental, chuck of new strings.

Keeping master updated always means more work and it is the reason why I
think that each team should decide if they want to use master or not.

Stanislav

(4.5.0) when it will be created. Let see if it is better or not in our
project :)

the new workflow is a bit unclear for me. If I work only in branches,
let's say in 4.5, does it mean that

- changes from 4.5 branch will be ported back to master (if so, when?), or
- changes in 4.5 branch will not affect the next 4.6 branch?

Btw, it's a bit ironic that the new workflow is introduced just after
conversion to .ui format is finally completed which should result in a
substantially lower translation workload for 4.5:)) I would tend to
continue with working on branches because master will bring only more
(wasted) work...

Best regards,
Stanislav

P. S.: Any news about Amagama update? It would be extremely handy for
current help translation.

It will be exactly as it is now for the work on 4.4, the template will
be updated in 4.6 branch between beta1 and RC1. 4.5 and 4.6 branches
will be maintained independently, just like now for 4.3 and 4.4.

Sorry, I don't get it. Now: 4.4 was created and translations from 4.3
appeared there.
Future: Which translations will appear in 4.5 when it is created - from
4.4 or from master? Translations of the same strings can differ between
them.

Thanks for the tip!

Is it better that I, in the future, and if I figure out how, post things
like that directly in Bugzilla and don't mention it at all here on this

for instance to make other translators become aware of this type of
bugs? I intend to do whatever you (or others) believe is best.

I don't know opinion of the others, but I think that reporting of

information about them can help in translating, and also trivial bugs
are often fixed very quickly when they're reported here.

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] LibreOffice 4.4. translation workload

2014-11-04 Thread Stanislav Horáček
Hi,

For information also, there are several string changes done by the UX
team, these changes are tracked here:
 https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/RecentStringChanges
I've asked them several times to check in other languages that the
strings still fit in the dialogs. If not, please open an issue and
report here the number so we can track it.

From what I understand, the help files have not been modified. So this
is something to have in mind too. Or Olivier, I think you have open a
metabug to track where the help needs updates?

I've made a few help updates and added the links to these help commits
to the wiki page. I think this page can be also used for tracking help
updates (if there is no link to commit, the change still needs an
update).

I am afraid that the list of changes is far from complete - and that
we will find another changed strings when working on translations.

And one note to translations in general: it would be very helpful to
update Amagama translation memory to include LO 4.3 - otherwise we
could reintroduce bad translations from elder series (I admit that
using TM in Pootle is always risky since sources of Amagama
suggestions are not shown).

I don't know, but I suppose that maintainers of Amagama have to be
asked. They are probably the same as for Pootle - according to contacts
listed here: https://github.com/translate/amagama

Also, I'm not sure if translation memory for old series should be
removed - probably it is not good idea because suggestions for languages
that were not updated for some time would be lost.

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] Amending and enhancing the help files

2014-07-02 Thread Stanislav Horáček
Hi,

we need definitely to go this way, so this activity is highly appreciated.

I would add one more point: currently, a lot of extended tooltips (maybe
most of them) are directly part of the help text. Therefore, if we excluded
the tips, we would have strings doubled, once in help and once in tips -
and it makes no sense to manage and translate them separately.

Together with technical solution, I think we should also have a general
discussion about help and how it should look like: for instance, do we want
pictures and screenshots in it? Or any example files, external links...
etc. etc.

Best regards,
Stanislav

2014-07-01 11:32 GMT+02:00 Sophie gautier.sop...@gmail.com:

 Hi all,

It is a secret for nobody that the help is a nightmare to maintain for
developers and contributors. However it's an important part for the
quality of our product and we need to find a way that is acceptable for
all of us working on it.

During the last Hackfest in Paris, I discussed with Moggi and Kendy how
we could organize the workflow to enhance and maintain the help and keep
the translation easy for l10n team.

So here is a proposal to discuss about using the wikihelp to maintain it:
 - the existing translations would be migrated, so no work is lost (one
of the most important requirement :)

 - the translation project is split in 3 parts:
 * UI as we have it today
 * Extended tooltips - currently in help files, are extracted and get its
 own .po project
 * Help content, managed in the wiki

 - review of the added/modified part on the wiki:
 * random people can contribute but *not* directly
 * there will be an approval process, like in Pootle or Git

 - there is one point that is not optimal, because wiki syntax is
difficult to manipulate via .po files, it would be much safer to use
media wiki to translate, with the help of the translate toolkit (where
you have context, extended syntax, memories).
Note: translating via .po still would be possible, but really at own
 risks.
The disadvantage that it has too is that we need two tools:
 - Pootle for UI + extended tooltips,
 - mediawiki for help.

So, this is how we can present the pros and cons maintaining our help
files via the wiki to reach more contributors and quality. Nothing is
set yet, but we need to find a consensus to have our help amended and
maintained, reach a good quality and really serves our users.

 Feedback and ideas welcome :)
 Cheers
 Sophie

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] l10n process, en_US version, Help files

2013-12-12 Thread Stanislav Horáček

Hi Sophie, all,

thank you very much for this initiative - it is really needed.
My few notes:

*After RC1 and l10n integration
- we need to know when integration is made after our fixes, there is
currently no communication on this

This can be found in the log of translations git module:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/libreoffice/translations

- but that doesn't solve the several typos that already exist and that
are overlooked by the l10n team (e.g in the Character Font Effect
dialog, there is Overline _c_olor and Underline _C_olor and this is the
same for several dialogs)

It would be worth to create a wiki page that summarizes all these rules - LO should use the Gnome
rules (AFAIK), but there is a lot of specific issues: for example, descriptions of Calc functions in
UI are quite messy because of different wording (Returns..., Calculates..., Value of...) or
parameter names (capitalization etc.).

Of course the UX team should be also involved.

* About the help files
- I always wonder why there is a Help button on a new dialog when no
help file is appended ;)
- more and more functions are undocumented or their help is obsolete. I
always think that an undocumented function is lost for the user and a
sad thing for a developer because his function will not be used as expected.
May be, but I don't know how heavy it would be for developers, the
solution would be to open an issue with a special tag like NF for each
new feature, with three lines about what the feature is supposed to
do. Searching on BZ with this special tag would allow to involve more
people in the loop to test it and document it.

I would suggest a simpler approach without need for any additional input from developers. We can use
release notes wiki pages where all new features are mentioned, create a list of new features and
check if they are covered by the help.

Best regards,
Stanislav

2013-12-12 Thread Stanislav Horáček
Hi,

2013/12/12 Andras Timar tima...@gmail.com

It is OK to fix new strings, also it is OK to fix obvious typos
anywhere. But we should refrain from re-phrasing old messages. It
would make a lot of unnecessary work for translators, and loss of
translation for unmaintaned languages. IMHO we have more important
things to do, than unify (Returns..., Calculates..., Value
of...) or (cannot, couldn't, could not) or whatever.

I just meant to use rules for new strings, not to make revolution in
current translations. At least not for now, when we are frustrated by all
the changes due to .ui conversion and when Pootle has no translation
memory. However, the current state is far from what you describe: we
resubmit translations for options pricing (first letter capitalized),
graphics changed to images, change in reset filter...

And I'm sorry, but volunteers can't be forced to do more important things -
they do what they like/are able to do; and it should be clearly said what
is desired and what isn't.

the original text seems to be pretty clear for me. Let's see an example:
Write a word, select the first half of this word and set simple border (4 edges, black line) for the
selection. You will see a rectangle around the first half.
Then select the second half of the word and set the same border again. You will not see two
rectangles, but only one around whole word.
But if you choose different border properties for the second half (e.g. red line) you will get two
rectangles, one black and one red.

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] Automatic translations and no suggestions in Pootle

2013-11-26 Thread Stanislav Horáček

Hi,

Before converting windows to WindgetLayout has been started, someone told that
new *.ui files will
allow us to render whole window dialogs and see what the context is.

Now we have another big release with many converted dialogs, many translations
to do and with
nothing to help us. In Polish word General could be translated as Ogólny, Ogólnie,
Ogólne ad
so on. If I have over 200 automatic translated strings and non possibilities to
see words in
context, what should I do now (half year ago I manually searched and compared
differences in 4.0 and
4.1 and don't want come back to this solution)?

I am afraid there is no simple and easy solution. My method is:
- find the dialog in UI (if you have no clue where, you can open and see it in
Glade thanks to ui files)
- open the dialog in 4.2 (new originals) and in 4.1 (old translations)
- find the translated dialog strings in 4.1 po files
- check and copy strings from files to Pootle (suggestions, currently missing,
would help a lot here)

(Maybe someone uses a better workflow... ?)

It is still a lot of work (that can't be avoided for such changes I think), on the other hand it is
an opportunity to review the complete dialogs and to fix or improve current translations.
Of course it would be awesome if we could see UI dialogs directly in Pootle like in Glade (maybe
some offline software allows this, I don't know).

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] Automatic translations and no suggestions in Pootle

2013-11-26 Thread Stanislav Horáček

Hi,

I think this should have been public, so leaving your full reply below:

Dne 26.11.2013 19:23, Milos Sramek napsal(a):

Hi,

I wrote a script which compares old (say LO41) and new (say LO42) dialogs and
writes the difference
(diff syntax) to the output. Paths and language should be set inside the file.
You can download it here: http://ubuntuone.com/3cZC2UJe8jCfQy299F07l8

If there are some automatically translated strings (i.e. untranslated in 4.1
but translated in 4.2),
you should see them in the output.

Slovak was fully translated in 4.1, so I did not see such strings. However,
using the script I've
found a few strings, translated both in Pootle and in 4.1, which were in
English in the dialog. For
example:

File: cui/ui/res/sk/pickgraphicpage
1c1
  e g=errorft i=labelMotív galérie apos;Odrážkyapos; je prázdny (žiadne
obrázky)./e
---

 e g=errorft i=labelThe Gallery theme apos;Bulletsapos; isempty (no
images)./e

Do you have any idea what to do with that?

best
Milos

Thanks for the script, it seems to be very useful. However - if I understand it correctly - it
compares *.ui files between two versions and I find automatic translations mainly in cases when old
format dialog was converted to *.ui.

I think the strings you mentioned are OK because they were changed sligthly - e.g. graphics was
replaced by images or the colon was added. So there are new originals in dev release (which was
not yet fed by 4.2 Pootle), but automatic translations in 4.2 Pootle.

. I mean, I do not need help to translate the text, but how do I
find the property PrettyPrinting in LO's Expert Config? I have
scrolled through it, but has not seen it at a first glance ... :(
Could it be, that it named like

better to rewrite the above mentioned part to something like

possibility to search the Expert Config Page (and could this be
renamed to Expert Configuration, please? I think, neither the

TIA for any help
Thomas.

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] Re: Where do I find PrettyPrinting in Expert config?

2013-11-25 Thread Stanislav Horáček

Hi,

ah, O.K. Are you able to change the help text? I have not the right
to do it myself ... :( The only possibility I have otherwise, would
be to open a bug for it ... :(

I pushed the proposal to Gerrit for master:
https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/#/c/6799/
and for 4.2 branch: https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/#/c/6800/

It still needs to be approved and then it should appear with the next
translations update.

[libreoffice-l10n] Automatic translations and no suggestions in Pootle

2013-11-24 Thread Stanislav Horáček

Hi all,

in general, I like Pootle web app very much, but I found some annoying issues when translating new
strings for 4.2.

First of all, some of new strings were translated automatically - which should not happen at all -
and part of these translations was of course wrong (e.g. noun instead of adjective when the original
is identical etc.). The strings can be noticed and fixed if they are in a dialog being translated
completely, but this is totally unexpected. I suspect this happened also for previous versions and
it might be related to the strange changes of strings reported by the Polish team.

The second issue was already mentioned by Andras: there is a huge amount of strings in help where
only meaningless (in terms of translation) identifiers were changed. I can accept this, but there is
still a problem that I get no suggestions for them (in previous versions, old translations were
suggested and it would speeded up translation a lot).

Any help, especially how to show suggestions again, would be very appreciated.

Regards,
Stanislav

[libreoffice-l10n] Problem with wrong own file in Pootle Terminology

2013-11-08 Thread Stanislav Horáček

Hi,

I uploaded an own file with apparently wrong header (probably missing \ns) to the Czech
Terminology project in Pootle. Now I can't access the Terminology project due to server error
(unknown encoding). Is it possible to delete this file somehow and fix the problem?

Thank you in advance,
Stanislav

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] Not recognized changes in (Polish) translation

2013-10-13 Thread Stanislav Horáček

Hi,

Moreover, the outcome is not date but serial number so description should
sound like:

=EDATE(3.31.2001;-1) returns the serial number 36950. Formatted as a
date, this is 2.28.2001

you are right, I pushed your suggestion for Gerrit review:
https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/#/c/6239/
Thanks for reporting this!

Generally speaking, it would be very appreciated if someone could review (especially in terms of
proofreading) these Gerrit patches related to local help content (the list of all reviews in
progress can be found at https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/#/q/status:open+project:help,n,z). It's a
pity that help improvements are submitted unnoticed by documentation or translation teams... Thanks
in advance to everyone who will get involved.

Regards,
Stanislav
