[libreoffice-l10n] Adding LibreTranslate to Weblate

2024-06-05 Thread sophi

Hi all,

I thought I had already sent a mail about it but couldn't find it...

I've requested a budget to use LibreTranslate with Weblate.
In (very) short:
- as a first step we will use their API (with a request to get more
translations per minute)

- then we have to prepare our files
- then we have to train our own models

Does any of you have already work in this field and could help?

For references:

https://github.com/LibreTranslate/Locomotive

Cheers

Also, could we have Weblate updated to the latest version? 5.5.5 is the

usual.

I was on vacation last week and today is a public holiday in several
countries, but from what I recall, Cloph wanted to upgrade Weblate this
week.

For the strings blocked for translation, I think Olivier asked last week
about it and it was an auto-locking of Weblate after a changeset was
merged while Weblate still had new changes to submit. I'll clarify with
Cloph tomorrow and will come back to you.

Reversely: If I worked on an older version, would translated strings automatically
become part of newer versions (7.6 -> 24.2 -> master)?

Yes, translation propagation is done on branches too

A different question: If a translation is saved with "reviewer" rights, will it
automatically be comitted to the LO distribution, or is there a need to do something
further to commit?

also yes, reviewers can review others translation and translate, no
extra steps needed.

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] How do I get rights to accept translations?

entered a few suggested translations on the Weblate system, but I do not have the
rights to save/accept them.

Generally, it makes sense that newcomer can only suggest translations and need
acceptance before achieving rights to make the translations effective in the LO
distribution. However, the Danish branch of LO has the problem that the former
administrator (Leif Lodahl) is no longer active in this work. There may be one
or perhaps even two more people in the project (or I may be alone), but as I
understand things, without administrator rights. Recent versions of Danish LO
contain increasing amounts of untranslated (English) phrases.

I do have the mail address of Leif Lodahl, but he is burnt out on the project
and suggested that I should ask here. So how do I proceed from here?

See my private mail, I gave you the contact of the translators
contributing to Danish.

https://translations.documentfoundation.org/translate/user-guides-experiment/calc-guide-24/cg2400-preface/fr/?checksum=582f44377d94f7e3

On saving the string, weblate adds a space before all colons (:) inside
the tags, which breaks the XML.

If I'm not mistaken, that must be fixed. XML must be preserved as-is.

Tested with Firefox and Brave.

The issue does not show in pt-BR.

You have to add a flag: ignore-punctuation-spacing to the string, so the
double space will be ignore. It only happens for French (if I remember
well) and will be fixed in the next version.

While regular updates for master are done, that's not true for
branches after string-freeze, there I do occasional checks only, but
that's then close to tagging usually and thus won't leave much time
for translators.
So as with all string-freeze breaks: adding l10n representatives (and
me) is necessary to make sure they'll get added to the templates
early/and not just right before tagging
(String changes in general shouldn't be pushed to branches without OK
from l10n on the corresponding gerrit-change)

Oups, sorry, seems I read to fast and didn't see branches were also

Just a note here: the libreoffice website is in full reconstruction and
we will soon have the content on Weblate for translation in all
languages. So don't waste your time on translating the old site now, it
will very soon be obsoleted.

in CC I have placed my OSSMalta email (though the old login may have been
under the .com tld before we migrated to a .eu)

once I have gotten the Maltese section of the site translated, I will then
dedicate time to bring the spelling.mt maltese spell checker to libreoffice,
though I belive there was an attempt for open-office when the project was
initially built by MLUg (malta linux user group) the predecessor and
inspiration for the OSSMalta community.

I think it would be better to focus now on the spellchecker and later on
the website for the reason above. Let me know if you need any help.

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] Making use of Weblate's new features

2024-02-27 Thread sophi

Hi Tuomas,
Le 26/02/2024 à 17:30, Tuomas Hietala a écrit :

Hello all,

As we know, TDF funded some improvements to Weblate last year. I think
all the features have landed in Weblate by now, but some of them need to
be specifically enabled.

First, there's the Category feature:
https://docs.weblate.org/en/weblate-5.0/admin/projects.html#category

Currently on TDF Weblate there are dozens of sometimes somewhat
cryptically named components inside each project. You'll get used to
them after a while but we could reduce confusion and speed up navigation
by making use of categories. There could be one category per module
(Writer, Calc, etc.) and some common categories as well, as many
components are used across the whole suite.

On that, I have to check with Cloph about intrusive it could be with his
own workflow on updating templates, extracting translations, etc. I'll
come back to the list when I have news.

Second, there's the Workflow customisation feature:
https://docs.weblate.org/en/weblate-5.1/workflows.html#workflow-customization

The idea was to allow each language team to make their own decicions
about workflow. So I'm just making sure if it's now okay for teams to
make the switch if they want to?

Do you have access to it under your language > tools > edit?

Cheers

Hi Andika,

not sure to understand your question correctly ("is all of my work actually
used" makes me wonder what else could be done with it), but please add those
remarks in the survey. It has a free form question at the end and you could turn
this into a suggestion like "provide more detailed statistics" beyond what
Weblate and https://dashboard.documentfoundation.org/ offers. A discussion on
the mailing list is good but perhaps better when the results are public.

Cheers,
Heiko

Hi Heiko,

I mean, yes of course, our translation works were automatically
processed and packaged, so users can utilize them as needed. But how
many downloads for, lets say, Indonesian UI? [1][2]. Were those
numbers published?

I saw some aggregate download numbers in "Slide deck of the last
Advisory Board meeting 2024-01-17", but I'm also interested in
translation-specific ones.

Hopefully my question makes more sense now :D

This is something I'd like to have as a tab in our statistics page here:
https://stats.documentfoundation.org/downloads
We don't have stats by language packs but by countries in Matomo. I
don't know if we have stats from the mirrors, but at least by country
would be great.
I'll ask Guilhem if it's feasible and will let the team know. Otherwise,
I'll try to retrieve them from Matomo.

[libreoffice-l10n] Bug fix on a string in 24.2

With this comment from Cloph:
while the commit to 24-2 broke string-freeze, the single string that it
changed can be considered a bugfix, and could be passed down to
translations via auto-fix/translators using weblate won't have to touch
the string again.

I also did the corresponding change for sl in 24-2 and 24-2-0 branches

Heiko, is there any character limit on the translated string?

Normally it should not, by the past we have to count the characters to
fit in the dialog, but no the dialog should adapt.

I also think that Shift should be written first, because that's the

Agreed also :)

Having to delete unnecessary terminology strings is indeed annoying. IMO
adding glossary entries to other languages should not be enabled by
default. I opened an issue on Weblate's Github earlier:

If TDF is going to fund improvements to Weblate again (I hope so!), this

not sure how much it helps, but in my opinion these points would
improve the translation a lot:
- employing machine translation,
- sharing translation memory (now Weblate, wiki and user guides are
completely separated),
- reusing existing translations (current suggestions in Weblate do not
work if e.g. a string is split or markup is added, even if the content
is preserved),
- more flexibility when customizing the tools (cf. the Weblate
improvements tendering) and dealing with the infrastructure problems.

They can't be enabled because it corresponds to LibreOffice online,
which by decision of the Board of Directors, had its development and
translations frozen.

See the decision here:
https://community.documentfoundation.org/t/vote-libreoffice-online-repository-and-translations/8893/15?u=sophi

I think that is not a correct explanation of the situation, Sophie
(although I can imagine that various posts in that topic you mention,
give such an impression, unfortunately). The work on the repository
itself was frozen, due to lack of interest, the ESC and the board
confirmed that, according to the attic policy(1).

If it would be true that these strings cannot be translated, it should
of course be fixed.

But the decision I linked above said that it has to be frozen:
"2. to freeze (not delete) the translations for online in Weblate, for
the time being".

So what did I say that was not true and what should be fixed?

However, looking at the android repo, I see e.g. (2, 3) and the fact
that others are translating too for the Android-Viewer, maybe there is sa
misunderstanding. Kees could it be that you try the wrong repo? Or maybe
it needs to be checked for Dutch?

I already activated Android-viewer project per request of Kees.

Cheers
Sophie

[libreoffice-l10n] Introducing Julia and the survey she works on

2023-12-22 Thread sophi

Hi all,

Let me introduce Julia. We are working with her on a l10n survey and
here is what she would like to say to our team:

Hello all,
My name is Julia, and I am a student currently working towards my
Bachelors in Psychology at
the University of California, Santa Barbara. With the help of Sophie and
Heiko, I have been
working to create a survey for the Localization team. We are interested
in hearing about the

Team’s experience with different tools and workflow components.
Before releasing the survey early next year, we are curious to hear your
feedback about any
tools or workflow components that you might think need more attention.
Our goal is to consider

this feedback as we design our survey and find out if there is more to ask.
Please reach out with any feedback, comments, or concerns you may have
regarding the
translation process. We truly value your willingness to participate, and
I look forward to hearing

from the community!
Thank you,
Julia

So don't hesitate to send your feedback on the list, she will then build
the survey based on it.

Cheers
Sophie

As already said and explained, you need training to be able to
translate, so first you make suggestions, the team review them and will
comment on them, accepted or rejected. After some times, you'll have
translators right. Each of us had the same process of being reviewed
before translating, and that's great because it's less hard than having
to learn the curve alone.

In this regard, I don't think the French community is punished.

I hope this will be officially discussed democratically whith the next
board...
You can discuss it with anyone you want, you don't become translator
without a bit of experience and learning. Our project has some
complexity and we offer to help you there. This is what suggestions are
for. And I'd be very happy to help you reach the next step.

its "Origin"

- but... if you search in the "Translation memory" field for a term and
click the "Search" button, Weblate returns a series of empty (blank)
correspondences for the columns Translation, Suggested change and Source

I think it is a bug of the program. Am I wrong or is there anything
additional to know/configure?

Sophie, Cloph, could you try and verify this strange behaviour?

I can reproduce. Searching for Empty in this string
https://translations.documentfoundation.org/translate/libo_help-master/textsharedguide/fr/?checksum=6e28968574d0de62
returns a lot of references, but only blank fields, even if similarity
is up to 100%.

But if you clone the translation (or I guess accept it), then the
suggestion is transferred to the translation field.

Would you open a bug on Weblate github?

Hi Stanislav,

thank you for your reply. I experienced this issue with this string again:

https://translations.documentfoundation.org/translate/libo_help-master/textsharedoptionen/hsb/?q=state%3Aempty=1

Weblate jumped two strings forward and the translated string was empty
again.

It is similar as in your bug report but "saving" the string doesn't take
a long time.

I was checking if it happens to me and I had the same error message.
However for me, the translation seems to be saved and doesn't take time
to be saved.

The strange thing also is it happens after the 5th string, going back in
the 4 strings already translated to check them, translation was empty
but it was not the same strings that I already translated. It was new
strings.

It seems like a mismatched in the display of the strings. Then, I was
able to translate 50 strings without having the error. That's a strange
behavior.

Cheers

makes it useful also for projects that host their translations on shared
Weblate instances, like Hosted Weblate? https://hosted.weblate.org/

That makes sense, and it seems other projects also had similar requests.
Cheers

Here is a string where I had this issue:

No, the error message is shown after first translation only, at least

Weblate jumped one string or more strings forward then. When returning,

Yes, it was for Upper Sorbian and maybe also for Lower Sorbian. I don't

Sorbian, then into Lower Sorbian.

[libreoffice-l10n] Specifications for Weblate #5447

2023-09-05 Thread sophi

Hi all,

As you know most of the enhancements we requested to Weblate have been
implemented (thanks to them and TDF for the funding :)

There is one which is not fixed, opened by Tuomas, but they need more
details on what is wanted:

https://github.com/WeblateOrg/weblate/issues/5447

Which settings would help you most in your workflow? This will be then

Sorry, I quoted the help page incorrectly. The help page does not
currently mention that there is a check for simulated *captions*.

I have submitted a change to the string:
https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/c/core/+/156238

See the code for the checking logic:
https://opengrok.libreoffice.org/xref/core/sw/source/core/access/AccessibilityCheck.cxx?r=8386d8e5#978

To see the string in the UI, open the accessibility sidebar panel.
Type text that starts with Caption, Illustration, Table, Text, Drawing
or Figure

Immediately insert an image.

Now you should see "Fakes" in the sidebar (without my patch).

The check also works, if the image is anchored to the paragraph with the
text.

Thanks a lot Ilmari for your quick feedback and your patch.

If it's possible, I want "Format ordinal number suffixes (1st ...

default for Catalan language.

Alternatively, avoiding the effect of this option for Catalan language
(i.e., no superscript for ordinal suffixes never) will be a better
option than current behavior.

I've searched at wiki and Bugzilla without luck. Is it possible to
change default autocorrect option for language?

Hi,

Some days ago I wrote previous mail. Maybe it wasn't the correct list
to post this question.

I want to change default value for "Format ordinal number suffixes
(1st ...> 1st)" from Autocorrect option to False for Catalan language
only (or disable such feature). Any hint if it's possible to do it and
how could be done? Or where/who can I ask for guidance?

Vacation period is not the best time to get feedback unfortunately.
Heiko just came back today and I think he might be able to help you. Not
sure it is doable at language level because for a long time we got it
wrong in French. Maybe the best way to get valuable feedback is to open
an issue and maybe add Heiko in cc.

[libreoffice-l10n] Weblate enhancements

2023-02-16 Thread sophi

Hi all,

So after a long time and some difficulties on both sides, we finally
have a signed contract between TDF and Weblate \o/.

All those tasks should be done within the next 6 months and you can
follow-up the progress of your favorite one(s) on github:)

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] Unusual behavior of Weblate

are too many and too scattered to collect them manually. It would be
better
to be able to delete them as I stumble upon them in the suggestion
list or

immediately after I realize I have just saved a translation containing a
typo.

I guess regenerating Weblete's TM from the latest one or two project
versions (7.4 and master) would be a good way to clean it up. Can I
request

such a thing for Bulgarian?

Also, I'm sorry about the broken link, here is a permalink to an entry:

https://translations.documentfoundation.org/translate/libo_help-master/textscalc01/bg/?checksum=6ea269b7376bb4cb

For me, the Similarity column is empty for the last 4 suggestions.
No similarity column for me at all. Not even in the language I have
access to.

The two first strings are ok, the first one being 100%

Can you point to a string where it shows up for you?
I seem to remember the "delete entry" shows up for inconsistent entries.

As an aside, the particular configuration of the LO Weblate hurts
quality badly.
Not having access to more languages or comments doesn't make the most of
translator time.

You can add more languages in your settings, or I didn't understand what
you mean.

Commenting isn't possible, making suggestions for the source language
isn't possible,

It is possible, I review numerous of them each month, see for example
comments here:

https://translations.documentfoundation.org/translate/libo_ui-master/cuimessages/en/?checksum=7838224e43a4e9ea

and the source code links are broken.

I clicked on Source string location of the same string
(https://git.libreoffice.org/core/+/master/cui/inc/tipoftheday.hrc#74)
in the String information area and it works for me, is it broken for
you? or could you give a link where it does not work?

As an example, the next string is
"The cell value is strictly less than the user defined value in the text
box in the right."
where it should be "user-defined" and "on the right". ("in the right"
means ~moral superiority vs. non-preferable alternative.

If the link to the source appears to be broken for you, an alternative
could be to open a bug and give the permalink to the string.

Cheers
Sophie

Hi Mihail,

Hello,

I noticed two unusual things working with Weblate lately:
- There are sporadic 'Delete entry' buttons. Why do they appear only for a
small percentage of the entries and what do they actually do? I would very
much like to delete erroneous or obsolete entries but the button never
appears on any of them.

Are you talking about Translation Memory? I didn't check but I guess
this is this one:

https://github.com/WeblateOrg/weblate/issues/6440

- Sometimes there is no similarity percentage. This hampers productivity
noticeably because when I know that a string is a 100% match, I can just
click through, otherwise I have to copy and compare in an external program.

This link illustrates both:

https://translations.documentfoundation.org/translate/libo_help-master/textscalc01/bg/?q=state%3A

Are you sure this is this string:
https://translations.documentfoundation.org/translate/libo_help-master/textscalc01/bg/?checksum=27e3a9ef45f72d83
because for me there is no automatic suggestions and I think you are
talking about that.

Please, let me know if you can see and share it.

Thanks a lot! I've seen it and add it to the issue:

A workaround is to copy the text, reject the suggestion and enter the

Thanks for any help,

P.S.: I feel that all such reports to this list are forgotten sooner or

Redmine for the infrastructure?)

Yes, reporting to Redmine is better and give also clear steps on how to

No, it is not that string on weblate. What I mean is that, when I
click on the Help > Get Help Online menu item, the following webpage
opens:

https://hub.libreoffice.org/forum/?LOlocale=zh-CN

And then it was immediately redirected to another link which may have
been defined in somewhere else other then weblate. I remember some
years ago there was a email requesting that the l10n team provide the
support link for their language, and we have provided
https://bbs.libreofficechina.org/. However, now we want to switch to
https://zh-cn.libreoffice.org/get-help/community-support/ as it
provides more support channels.

Ok, thanks, let me research on that, and I'll come back to you.

So the hub is managed by the infra team, so I asked Guilhem to change
the link. I'll let you know when it's done.

It's now done, thanks to Guilhem :)
Cheers

Hi,

in such cases as this, I would suggest you to submit an issue to Redmine
for infrastructure [1] - most of problems I reported there was resolved
quickly.

However, we had the same "Get Help" request for our language [2] and
nothing has happened for two years. (And now it is not so urgent as we
have now a new documentation webpage instead of previous missing one.)

Best regards,
Stanislav

@Olivier, could you answer Guilhem on the issue above so we can make
progress :) Thanks in advance!

Hello! It is my goal for 2023 to translate LibreOffice into Cherokee.

That's a great goal for you language and for LibreOffice :)

It looks like there are no previous nor current translations in weblate so
I'll have to start from the ground up. I've read a few of the articles on the
wiki and I think the following is enough to get the ball rolling.

For Weblate, pleas let me know your username there, then I can create
the language group. Cherokee already exists on Weblate, we need to
populate the project there:

https://translations.documentfoundation.org/languages/chr/

English:Cherokee
Native Syllabary: ᏣᎳᎩ
Romanized: Tsalagi
Romanized with phonetic breaks: Tsa-la-gi
ISO 639-2: chr
ISO 639-3: chr

It is polysynthetic language, written from left to right.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polysynthetic_language

It spoken in by the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians (UKB) in Oklahoma,
the Cherokee Nation (CN) in Oklahoma and the Eastern Band of Cherokee
Indians (EBCI) in North Carolina.

There are dialectical differences and I will focused on what is
taught and spoken in North Carolina.

While the native script is supported by Unicode and LibreOffice Writer
(tested on GNU+Linux),
most real life signage typically has both English and Cherokee side by
side. Some
may bold certain syllables in the Romanized form to aid with enunciation.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherokee_language#/media/File:Cwy_no_parking.jpg

If possible I would like to do something similar in LibreOffice.
Hopefully this will lower
the learning curve and give a lower barrier for self teachers.

It would make navigating the menus... interesting. I'm open to
suggestions on how to best to do this.

Perhaps two translations projects/entries would be necessary one for
the native and one for the Romanized?
Do you know any other software already translated in Cherokee? First
thing I could think is having the Romanized form as extended tips.
Not sure what is possible, Christian is currently on vacation, but I'll
discuss with him when he is back.

Both the Tri-Council and UNESCO have acknowledged that the Tsalagi is
critically endangered so anything that would help "learning while
using" would be worth while.
