RE: ENCOUNTERED A UNWORKING BUTTON - IMPORTANT

2018-02-07 Thread Ahmad Alawsie
I agree that removing it shouldn’t be a significant focus, but my job as a
contributor to the OpenOffice project, and Pootle, is not only to translate,
but to report bugs too, and I believe this is a non-functioning button, thus it
shall be classified as a ‘Bug’. Also, I do not think there should me immense
focus on its removal, as we can ALL agree if there is something that is
non-functioning, and that will never be functioning due to it being a paid
service, then why not remove it and help the UI of Pootle improve in this
sense. Removing it should not take hours or days of someone’s time, and thus
should be a straightforward process.

Regards,
Ahmad

as this is the first time - since many years of using Pootle - somebody
has noticed/mentioned the button and is claiming of its non-function, I
don't now if this is really a value add when we focus on its removal.

Maybe we should go back and concentrate on using the Pootle software:
with translations. ;-)

Hi Andrea and all,

Since the Google translate is a paid service, then I really do not see a point
in the button being displayed on the webpage, and perhaps it is a good idea to
remove it for those reasons. If there’s no use of a feature, then there’s no
purpose for its existence.

The Pootle documentation
http://docs.translatehouse.org/projects/pootle/en/stable-2.7.2/features/machine_translation.html
states this is a paid service, with fees listed at
https://cloud.google.com/translate/pricing

The fact that it is a paid service complicates things a lot. Not much
for the amount (it's 20$ per million characters; still, it would be a
large amount if you consider all strings and all languages), but for the
paperwork needed for the ASF to an expenditure "per use" of this kind.

I mean: for a free service we would only have the technical issue, for a
paid service this becomes very complex to handle.

   Andrea.

RE: ENCOUNTERED A UNWORKING BUTTON - IMPORTANT

2018-02-02 Thread Ahmad Alawsie
Hi Andrea and all,

I must disagree to some extent with not recommending Google translate. Firstly,
I wish to state that I do not use Google Translate for entire translations,
since it translates word to word, and not based on the context of the actual
phrase. However, I do believe it is useful in the sense that it gives a word
and other alternatives for the translated words, and as an Arabic translator on
this service, I have no issue with Google translate and would actually like
this shortcut button to function. This is for the same reasons I had stated in
the previous email in regards to this issue: time-efficient and is useful for
word-to-word translations, which will then allow the translator to translate
further, based on the context of the phrase that needs to be translated.

I hope you can understand what I am saying, and am looking forward to seeing
that button actually functioning, in order to boost efficiency of translation
for a translator (contributor) like myself. Thanks again and will look forward
to hearing back from you.

Kind regards,

Ahmad A

Thanks for flagging this. The Google translate option came with a Pootle
update but was never configured. We do not recommend using Google
Translate since quality is better if you don't use it (and, if your aim
is consistency, Pootle will give suggestions by itself). Do you think it
would be really useful? At the moment is is an unused new feature that
you are seeing just because of a system update. But if you feel it would
be important we can look into it.

   Andrea.

ENCOUNTERED A UNWORKING BUTTON - IMPORTANT

2018-01-31 Thread Ahmad Alawsie
Hi all,

I hope everyone is doing well. I am mailing you all to raise awareness to an
issue that I have encountered whilst translating strings on the Apache
Translate Pootle Service. So whilst I’m translating, I decided to fiddle around
with the website a little and came across an issue that occurs not only in the
Arabic translation section, but for all other languages such as French, German,
Italian and so on. Take a look at the picture below and be aware of where my
cursor is pointing at...

[cid:image001.png@01D39AF7.62347140]

So I am attempting to click the “Google translate (EN->AR) button”, and I
expect it to either open a new window directing me to the google translate
page, or maybe a mini-window on the current webpage I’m on, or at the very
least, automatically translate the English string to Arabic based on Google
translation. None of that happens, though, and instead I receive an error
message at the bottom of the webpage saying “Google Translate Error. The
request is missing a valid API key”.

[cid:image005.png@01D39AF7.62347140]

I hope this makes sense to you all and am looking to hearing back from the
relevant individual/s on a solution to this issue, as the existence of that
button is there to work, and not be out of order. I would also like to express
my interest in potentially helping you out with fixing this and other related
problems as I am a sufficiently experienced coder too and not only a translator


Thanks again everyone and I wish you all the best.

Regards,

Ahmad
