tion Escalates Gaza Attack With Assassination

Phyllis Bennis http://www.thenation.com/authors/phyllis-bennis ,
The Nation: November 14, 2012

Yesterday's Egyptian-brokered cease-fire between Gaza and Israel collapsed
today when Israel launched a major escalation. In airstrikes almost
certainly involving US-made F-16 warplanes and/or US-made Apache
helicopters, Israel's air force assassinated Ahmad Jaabari, the longtime
military leader of Hamas. As the Israeli airstrikes continued today, seven
more Palestinians were killed and at least thirty were injured, ten of them
critically.

Jaabari had been chief negotiator with Israel in the deal that led to the
release of captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit in exchange for the release
of more than 1,000 Palestinian political prisoners held illegally in Israeli
jails. He had negotiated the cease-fire that had mostly held over much of
the last year or more. The attack, code-named Operation Pillar of Defense
[sic], also killed someone else in Jaabari's car, and quickly expanded with
additional airstrikes against Palestinian security and police stations in
Gaza, making it impossible for Palestinian police to try to control the
rocket-fire.

So why the escalation? Israeli military and political leaders have long made
clear that regular military attacks to cleanse Palestinian territories
(the term was used by Israeli soldiers to describe their role in the 2008-09
Israeli assault on Gaza) is part of their long-term strategic plan. Earlier
this year, on the third anniversary of the Gaza assault, Israeli army Chief
of Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz told Army Radio that Israel will need to
attack Gaza again soon, to restore what he called its power of deterrence.
He said the assault must be swift and painful, concluding, we will act
when the conditions are right. Perhaps this was his chosen moment.

It is an interesting historical parallel that this escalation-which almost
certainly portends a longer-term and even more lethal Israeli assault-takes
place almost exactly four years after Operation Cast Lead, the last major
Israeli war on Gaza, which left 1,400 Gazans dead in 2008-09. Then, as now,
the attack came shortly after the US presidential elections, ending just
before President Obama's January 2009 inauguration.

But the timing for this escalation is almost certainly shaped more by
Israel's domestic politics than by the US election cycle. The most likely
timeline is grounded in Netanyahu's political calendar-he faces re-election
in January, and having thoroughly antagonized many Israelis by his
deliberate dissing of President Obama, needs to shore up the far-right
contingent of his base. With regional pressures escalating, particularly
regarding the expanding Syrian crisis, Netanyahu needs to reassure his
far-right supporters (an increasing cohort) that even if he doesn't send
bombers to attack Damascus, he still can attack, bomb, assassinate Arabs
with impunity.

There is a US connection, of course-however much domestic politics motivated
Tel Aviv's attack, Israel's backers in Congress (lame-duck and newly
elected) will still demand public US support for the Israeli offensive.
Netanyahu will get that backing-there is no reason to think the Obama White
House is prepared yet to challenge that assumption. But it's unlikely that
even Netanyanu believes it will somehow recalibrate his tense relationship
with US by forcing Washington's hand to defend Israel's so-called right of
self-defense. They will do that-but Obama will still be pretty pissed off
at Netanyahu.

As is always the case, history is shaped by when you start the clock. In the
last several days, US media accounts have reported increasing violence on
the Gaza-Israel border, most of them beginning with a Palestinian attack on
Israeli soldiers on Thursday, November 8. What happened before that
Palestinian attack?

For starters, the soldiers, part of an Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) squad
that included four tanks and a bulldozer, were inside the Gaza Strip.
According to the IDF spokeswoman, Palestinians fired at soldiers while they
were performing routine activity adjacent to the security fence. Really.
What kind of activities inside the supposedly not-occupied Gaza Strip, by a
group of armed soldiers, tanks and a bulldozer (almost certainly an armored
Caterpillar D-9 bulldozer manufactured in the United States and paid for
with US taxpayer military aid to Israel), could possibly be defined as
anything close to routine? Unlike the illegal Palestinian rockets fired
against civilian targets inside Israel, using force to resist an illegal
military force in the context of a belligerent military occupation is lawful
under international law.

Later that day, an 11-year-old child was killed. Israel was investigating
the boy's death. Not many US media

[LAAMN] Fw: Emergency in Gaza

2012-11-16 Thread Romi Elnagar

Connect with AFU

Dear Friend,
As you know, devastating violence has once again returned to Gaza. Israel’s
military operation “Pillar of Defense” continues to cause casualties in Gaza,
many of them innocent women and children. Loud explosions from Israeli air,
naval, and tank strikes, as well as rocket and mortar fire from Gaza into
Southern Israel can be heard throughout all of Gaza.
A young boy in Gaza walks past his UNRWA school and through the wreckage caused
by the recent devastating violence.

Tragically, one of our UNRWA teachers, Marwan Abu El Qumsan, was killed on
Wednesday by a nearby airstrike while in his car. As you can imagine, our staff
of 12,000, like everyone in Gaza, is terrified.
We mourn all loss of life and support the calls of the Secretary-General for an
immediate de-escalation of tension on both sides. But, as violence continues,
UNRWA remains in Gaza, prepared to provide protection, emergency medical
relief, and support to the 1.2 million refugees we serve there.
UNRWA's Response
Due to security concerns, all 245 UNRWA schools will be closed until further
notice, but they will remain a safe place to take shelter should it become
necessary. Our health teams are also prepared for emergency care in our 21
clinics and will establish temporary or mobile clinics if individuals are
displaced or unable to travel to permanent UNRWA clinics.
We have a sufficient stock of food aid to provide in the short term, but
without immediate support, stock will be completely depleted for early 2013.
This would be catastrophic for the 800,000 refugees who rely on UNRWA’s food
aid for survival. If this crisis continues, medical aid supplies and medicine
might also face critical shortages, jeopardizing more lives.
During my visit to Gaza in March, I was struck by the hopefulness of the people
I met there. But as this vulnerable population faces multiple crises, that hope
continues to fade. Please help us provide the protection, emergency medical
relief, and support these refugees need, just to survive.
We will continue to update you with important information as we receive it.
Thank you for continuing to stand by us.
Sincerely,

Abby Smardon

[LAAMN] Go Back To Sleep America

2012-11-16 Thread scotpeden

By Jill Dalton

Go back to sleep America.  The election is over.  The “lesser of two
evils” or as Glen Ford so aptly labeled him the “more effective evil”
has won and all is well with the world.

You cast your faux fear
vote for your faux president who was actually selected and installed by
the corporate powers to serve the corporate police state that’s been put
into place over the past 30 years and is now accelerating at an
alarming rate.  The irony is many actually believe their vote matters
and global warming doesn’t exist and we’re fighting the good wars and
fracking will save us from peak oil and taking our rights away will keep
us safe and we’re number one.

Sure we’re number 1.  Number 1 in
income inequality, #1 in incarceration rates, #1 in building and
exporting weapons, #1 in military spending.  In fact, we’re the #1
terrorist organization on the planet.  Our main exports are: murder,
torture, death and destruction.  We’ve managed to create terrorists
where there were none.  Terrorism is like a cancer and when it’s
attacked it metastases and spreads around the globe.  Our child poverty
rate is 23.1% second only to Romania.  We rank in the low 20’s in
science and math scores so go back to sleep America.

The
sociopaths have taken over the asylum and are hollowing or harvesting
our country out from the inside.  Our manufacturing sector has plummeted
from 70% in the 1960’s to a meager 17% today.  Corporate power, aided
and abetted by our bought and paid for legislators, are exploiting us
and destroying the environment in the process.

I believe these
white male supremacist hate the feminine and therefore degrade, defeat,
demean, abuse, rape and pillage Mother Earth every chance they get and
when she fights back with a Katrina or a Sandy they deny climate
change.  These male white supremacists treat us human women with the
same disdain and disrespect.  They are dangerous dinosaurs that have not
evolved and are running scared.  You only have to look at blowhards
like O’Reilly or Limbaugh to see the pattern.  But all bullies are
really cowards, hiding their fear with racism, sexism and vitriol and
when you stand up to a bully they invariable back down as you’ve exposed
them for the ugly pathetic little tyrants they are.  Their only power
lies in our silence and our obedience.

We know the truth and we
have the power.  Our Constitution still reads “we the people” not “we
the corporations.”  It’s up to us to rise up and stand up for our
rights and our planet.  For our mother earth, women’s rights, economic
equality, a peaceful world, a peaceful homeland, good food, good schools
available to all not just the rich, good jobs and healthcare for all.
These are basic human rights.
But we’ve given our power away.
We’re no longer citizens we’re consumers.   We’re passive.  We
vote and
think we’ve done our civic duty and then go back to sleep till the next
bogus election comes around complete with its negative attack ads,
non-issues and corporately sponsored participants.

Issues are
never discussed because that would be too dangerous to the corporate
state and the American people might wake up and ask, Yeah, why don’t I
have a good job and healthcare, why can’t my kids get a decent
education?  Why are we bailing out the bankers and Wall Street and
foreclosing on homeowners?  Why are we spending trillions on illegal
wars?  Why are our police forces militarized?  Why is my income the same
as it was in 1968 while productivity is up and CEO’s are making
millions?  Why?  Because the corporate state is about profit and
control and we’re merely pawns in their game of greed where, to borrow
from Chris Hedges, “the only word they know is, MORE!”

They
ignore our cries.  50% of all Americans are either in or near poverty.
Our children go to sleep hungry and homeless but we’re too busy propping
up a dead system that serves the 1%.  It’s actually much less than the
1% but no need to split hairs here.  Sure the economy works for them.
Their kids go to private schools; they have healthcare, a few nice homes
and eat non-GMO food so it works for them.

I received an email
from an old friend recently and inside was a rant from a woman
proclaiming how all these poor people are freeloading off Obama’s
welfare state because they receive food stamps while she, on the other
hand, has to work very hard at her job and why should they get a free
ride?

I wrote back, “Seriously, she’s concerned about a poor
family of four receiving $70 a week in food stamps?  What about Wall
Street and the too big to fail banks who’ve been given $16 trillion of
our taxpayer dollars or 1 trillion a year being spent on illegal wars.
What about the tax cuts for the rich and them not paying their fair
share?”  Seems she’s been indoctrinated, as many have, in the Ayn Rand
philosophy.  It’s the let’s blame the victim

that the Israeli attacks on Palestine appear to be coordinated with the

good case for this, while showing how U.S. mass media have presented the
violence from the viewpoint of the Israeli government, keeping the
American people, as always, in the dark about what's truly happening.

Greenwald, who is Jewish, holds to much higher standards than the mass

**Whenever Israel begins to bomb its Arab neighbors, our deceptive mass
media go to any recent violence committed by these Arabs and use it as
justification, ignoring the many horrors committed by Israel against
said neighbors going back for decades. It is an essential part of the
propaganda system in place to win over as many Americans as possible for
overlooking Israeli human rights crimes and war crimes, particularly in
subjugating the native Palestinian peoples, who are imprisoned without
evidence they committed crimes, and routinely slaughtered without
justification.

In fact, as Belen Fernandez points out this morning, Israel has
committed a number of violent acts
http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/opinion/2012/11/201211168825952495.html
against the people of Gaza in the days leading up to the latest
conflict, all ignored by U.S. mass media. If one Israeli citizen dies
from violence it is headlined in all U.S. mass media, but if hundreds of
Palestinians die it is on page 56 of the /NY Times/ in small print, so
most Americans have no clue about what's happening, any more than they
do about the bankster scams, defense cheating, polluting of our natural
environment or any other important fact outing the ruling Forces of
Greed and /their/ National Security State (it's certainly not /ours/).

The reason we must care about this more than many other international
events is that Israel is a client state of the Empire, financed and
armed by the USA. They could not continue the brutality without US
support. Ironically, American conservatives who oppose our having
medical care for our own people eagerly send billions of dollars in
foreign aid to Israel each year, which subsidizes government health
care for Israelis even as our own people suffer and die for a lack of
medical care.

Israel and now occupied by Israeli citizens. If anyone did such a thing

Operation Peace for NetanyahuHere, with perfect timing, organized
precisely now, just two months before the elections, comes an escalation in
the south: Bombing led to the firing of missiles, which led to bombing, and
so on and so forth.
By Tamar Gozanskyhttp://www.haaretz.com/misc/writers/tamar-gozansky-1.476639
|
05:35 16.11.12 | 0

Their chests puffed out with importance, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
and Defense Minister Ehud Barak announced to the media and the public the
start of another war, this time in Gaza. As was to be expected, the two
waved the time-worn excuse of a war of no choice, and as was to be
expected, politicians from Kadima and the Labor Party also grabbed onto
this excuse; from their point of view, bombing the Gaza Strip is a reason
to salute the government.

Experience has taught us time and again that at the start of every war, the
government declares festively that this time there will be an end to the
firing of rockets on Israeli towns and villages. But then every time yet
another war comes around that is supposed to solve the problem once and
for all. Lies follow deception, which follows the intoxicating illusion of
power.

In the past year, Netanyahu and his partners prepared us for a big military
campaign against Iran, explaining to us time after time that Iran is an
existential threat. But for a war against Iran, it is still necessary to
have an American partner, and that partner, so far, has not given Netanyahu
the go-ahead, and thus, as he announced, the war against Iran has been
delayed until the spring.

But meanwhile there are elections; Netanyahu and Barak apparently said to
themselves, So if there is no war against Iran, how can we arrange things
in a way that suits an election campaign by the right-wing coalition
partners, which embrace the settlers on the one hand and the families of
the tycoons on the other? So here, with perfect timing, organized precisely
now, just two months before the elections, comes an escalation in the
south: Bombing led to the firing of missiles, which led to bombing, and so
on and so forth.

Even the Netanyahu-Lieberman-Barak government knows that the bombing of
Gaza, and even an invasion, by the IDF will not solve any problems. It is
worth recalling that on November 27, 2008, Barak - who was also defense
minister then, in Ehud Olmert's government - declared the beginning of
Operation Cast Lead, that war that was supposed to deal Hamas a decisive
beating. And now, four years later, this same Barak is again waging war,
and again on Gaza. And now, again, they are stuffing us full of the wonders
of assassinations and destruction, so long as they can fool the Israeli
public that this time the problem will be solved.

But the similarity between the war that has just begun and Operation Cast
Lead is not merely the bluff that it will be a matter of bang and we're
finished. Both now and in 2008, the war had a transparent political aim:
to inflame the public atmosphere and in this way get more votes in the
Knesset elections. Therefore a suitable name for the war that has just
started is Operation Peace for Netanyahu, or, if you prefer, Operation
Peace for Netanyahu and Barak, and not the rather poetic name, Pillar of
Cloud.

War always was, and still is, a very powerful tool for wiping social
problems off the table, for hiding the worsening housing crisis and the
daily price increases for basic commodities, as well as for justifying the
harsh spending cuts in the 2013 budget. In short, they tell us: Sit quietly
and let us waste another NIS 15 billion on another war, and then let us
justify the budget cuts still to come in unemployment benefits, child
allowances, hospital care, education and infrastructure.

Sometimes I wonder: How much longer the two peoples, Israelis and
Palestinians, will have to suffer until the penny drops we finally
understand that military force does not solve the problem of rockets on
Israeli communities, and does not ensure a tranquil childhood for the
children of Sderot and Ashkelon?

During the last war, Operation Cast Lead, we chanted at demonstrations: In
Gaza and Sderot, the children want to live. I hereby commit myself to
continue chanting that same cry for life in the demonstrations we shall
hold against the present war, and on behalf of peace between Israel and the
Palestinian state that will arise alongside it.

Former Colombian Defence Minister Admits Sending Drones into Venezuela

Nov 16th 2012, by Ewan Robertson
[image: Ex Colombian Defence Minister Gabriel Silva (VTV)]

Ex Colombian Defence Minister Gabriel Silva (VTV)

Mérida, 16th November 2012 (Venezuelanalysis.com) Colombia sent spy planes
into Venezuela in 2009 and 2010 and publicly lied about the intelligence
activities at the time, a former Colombian defence minister has revealed.

In December 2009, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez accused Colombia of
violating Venezuela’s sovereignty by sending drones into Venezuelan
airspace.

“They [Colombia] are preparing an aggression,” Chavez had warned, while
also adding that “we do not have any plans against Colombia...the last
thing I would ever want in this life is a war with Colombia”.

At the time, then-Colombian defence minister Gabriel Silva denied Chavez’s
accusations, stating that, “Colombia does not have the capacities they
[Venezuelan officials] describe”. “Perhaps it was that the Venezuelan
soldiers confused Santa Claus’s sleigh with a spy plane,” he joked.

However, speaking on Colombia’s Caracol Radio this week, Gabriel Silva
admitted that Colombia had indeed been using drones to spy on Venezuela.
“At the time we were on the edge of war [with Venezuela] and we couldn’t
allow Colombia to be invaded by Venezuela without warning,” he claimed as a
motive for the operations.

In December 2009 relations between Colombia and Venezuela were fraught
after the presidency of Alvaro Uribe made an agreement in October 2009
allowing the United States access to seven of Colombia’s military bases.

Bilateral relations had also deteriorated after Colombia attacked a
Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) guerrilla camp in Ecuador in
March 2008 without Ecuador’s permission. The attack killed 25 people,
including Raul Reyes, a FARC leader.

*Close Call*

In his interview Silva also revealed that Colombia’s spy operations in
Venezuela managed to locate the FARC’s second in command, Ivan Marquez
(alias Luciano Marín Arango), and leaders of ELN Colombian guerrilla force,
“very close” to the Colombian border.

An incursion by Colombian security forces into Venezuelan territory was
planned to “extricate” Marquez, according to Silva. However, authorisation
was blocked by Uribe on the consideration that “the political
climate…wasn’t the most favourable.”

These events took place in the final weeks of the Uribe administration, in
July 2010, when his government accused Venezuela of harbouring FARC and ELN
encampments.

In response, Venezuelan President Chavez broke relations with Colombia.
Chavez had previously stated that while guerrillas sometimes penetrated
Venezuela’s difficult-to-patrol frontier with Colombia, this could not be
used as a pretext to attack Venezuela.

In August this year Uribe also referred to the July 2010 incident, and said
he had wanted to initiate a military operation in Venezuela but had “lacked
time” as his presidency ended.

Gabriel Silva said that it isn’t known what would have happened between
Colombia and Venezuela if the Colombian military operation to extricate
Marquez had been executed. Marquez is now one of the FARC’s negotiators in
peace talks with the Colombian government of Juan Manual Santos, which are
taking place in Cuba.

In response to Silva’s comments, which contradict Uribe’s account of the
July 2010 incident, Uribe has announced legal action against Silva.

Meanwhile Uribe renewed his criticism of his successor, President Santos,
accusing him of going from a former “champion” opposed to the Venezuelan
“dictatorship” to an “associate” of Chavez now.

Santos, who was also a defence minister under Uribe, has normalised and
strengthened diplomatic relations with the Chavez administration since
becoming president of Colombia.

[LAAMN] Israeli Negotiator: Hamas Commander Was Assassinated Hours After Receiving Truce Deal from Israel (2 articles)

Obama's kill list policy compels US support for Israeli attacks on Gaza
The US was once part of the international consensus against extra-judicial

Israel's escalating air attacks on Gaza follow the depressingly familiar
pattern that shapes this conflict.
Overwhelming Israeli force slaughters innocent Palestinians, including
children, which is preceded (and followed) by far more limited rocket
attacks into Israel which kill a much smaller number, rocket attacks
which are triggered by various forms of Israeli provocations -- all of
which, most crucially, takes place in the context of Israel's
45-year-old brutal occupation of the Palestinians (and, despite a
withdrawal of troops, that includes Gaza, over which Israel continues
to exercise extensive dominion). The debates over these episodes then follow an
equally familiar
pattern, strictly adhering to a decades-old script that, by design at
this point, goes nowhere.

Israeli Negotiator: Hamas Commander Was Assassinated Hours After Receiving

[LAAMN] Lest We Forget: Operation Cast Lead, the Israel Invasion of Gaza (winter 08-09)

2012-11-16 Thread Romi Elnagar
Dear all,

The Israeli army is massing on the border with Gaza (they may already have
launched their attack).  Seventy-five thousand reservists are being called up
in Israel.

Lest we forget, this is what the last attack on Gaza looked like.  An estimated
1400 people died then, but the total number will never be known.  One has only
to look at photos and videos of the devastation of Operation Cast Lead to know
that the number of dead was surely much higher.  What new weapons do they have
now that they didn't have back then?  What will they add to their depleted
uranium, their white phosphorus, their microwave weapons and sonic booms?

May God have mercy!

Take Action Now to Stop Israel’s Attacks on Gaza
Since November 8, Israel has killed at least 21 Palestinians in the
occupied and besieged Gaza Strip, the majority of whom are civilians,
including
children. In addition, 3 Israeli civilians have been killed by a Palestinian
rocket.
Israel's attacks against the Gaza Strip are being committed with U.S.
weapons given to Israel as military aid by the U.S. taxpayer. These weapons
are
being misused by Israel in violation of the U.S. Arms Export Control Act
to commit grave human rights abuses of Palestinians.

Stand up for economic justice with Wal-Mart workers on Black Friday
Here we go again. The frenzy to buy is about to begin when corporate
stores are looking to make big profits forcing their employees to work long
hours and miss holiday family time. It’s not that the employees don’t want to
work, but what about living wages, decent working conditions, good benefits
like healthcare and basic respect. Perhaps the most egregious example of
worker abuse is Wal-Mart where some workers after _three years only make

[LAAMN] GP RELEASE Green Party: The US must press Israel not to resume war on Gaza

2012-11-16 Thread Romi Elnagar

Green Party: The U.S. must press Israel not to launch a new war on Gaza; Greens
urge an immediate truce and resumption of negotiations

• The U.S. is ignoring the source of the conflict and chain of incidents
leading up to the current Gaza crisis, say Greens

• Green Party Speakers Bureau: Greens available to speak on budget policy and
taxation: http://www.gp.org/speakers/speakers-foreign-policy.php

WASHINGTON, DC -- Green Party leaders said today that the U.S. must pressure
Israel not to resume its war on Palestinians living in Gaza, and that the
illegal blockade and hardship imposed by Israel on Gaza must end.

President Obama and Congress have the clout to stop a repeat of the 2009 Gaza
War, in which more than 1300 Palestinians were killed, including 700 civilians,
over 300 of them children. Thirteen Israelis were also killed, of whom three
were civilians. This is a 'David and Goliath' fight, with nuclear-powered
Israel acting in disregard for international law against a dispossessed people
living under siege. Israel's assaults on Gaza will not make Gazans go away or
resolve the conflict, said Muhammed Malik, former co-chair of the Miami-Dade
Green Party, who recently spoke at the Students for Justice in Palestine
National Conference at the University of Michigan. (2009 Gaza War casualties:
see http://www.dci-pal.org/english/display.cfm?CategoryId=1DocId=917 and
figures referenced athttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casualties_of_the_Gaza_War)

Green Party leaders noted that targeted assassinations are illegal and that the
airstrike authorized by Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Barak
that killed Hamas military commander Ahmad al-Jabari also killed his
14-year-old son.

The Israeli airstrike ended two days of calm after news that Egypt had brokered
a truce between Israel and Palestinian officials. The truce was meant to end a
surge of violence that resulted in more than 100 missiles fired out of Gaza and
repeated Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip, where people are already living in
conditions comparable to an open-air prison
(http://www.democracynow.org/2012/11/16/israeli_negotiator_hamas_commander_was_assassinated).

The Obama Administration should press for an immediate ceasefire and
resumption of the negotiations. Claims by Israeli and U.S. officials that the
IDF is trying to avoid Palestinian civilian casualties are not credible.
Washington and the U.S. media have focused on the increased Palestinian rockets
fired from Gaza but are ignoring the chain of incidents, including killings of
Palestinian civilians, that motivated Hamas to fire rockets out of Gaza, said
Jill Stein, the Green Party's 2012 nominee for President.

The terrorism that Israel is using to maintain the occupation far outweighs
the retaliatory terrorism committed by Hamas. Unless these assaults can be
halted, we'll see another massacre of Gazan civilians and further deterioration
of the city, added Dr. Stein. (For a timeline of events leading up to the
recent confrontation,
seehttp://electronicintifada.net/blogs/ali-abunimah/how-israel-shattered-gaza-truce-leading-escalating-death-and-tragedy-timeline andhttp://www.fair.org/blog/2012/11/15/when-does-israelpalestine-violence-start/)

The U.S. government and most U.S. media have ignored the heart of the conflict
between Israel and Palestinians, including Gazans -- Israel's ethnic cleansing
of Palestinians from their native land, ongoing colonization of Palestinian
land in Israel and the Occupied Territories, and Israel's refusal to allow
refugees to return home, as prescribed by international law.  Over two thirds
of Gazans are from Israel and the West Bank, said Justine McCabe, co-chair of
the Green Party's International Committee (http://www.gp.org/committees/intl).

While self-defense and armed resistance against military occupation are legal
under international law, no such law tolerates attacks on civilians. Greens
have urged support for Palestinian and Israeli peace groups and for nonviolent
resistance, and have called for an end to all violence targeted at unarmed
civilians. Greens insist that regional stability and security for all the
people of Israel and Palestine are not possible until peaceful negotiation
based on international law resolves the conflict.

The Green Party of the United States has called for boycott, divestment, and
sanctions against Israel until it complies with international law and U.N.
directives, ends the occupation of Palestinian lands, and observes full and
equal human rights for Palestinians within Israel and the Occupied Territories,
including the right to return home.

Washington must stop aiding Israel's violations of human rights. Israel has

Re: [LAAMN] GP RELEASE Green Party: The US must press Israel not to resume war on Gaza

2012-11-16 Thread scotpeden
I know this will sound weird to those that see Israel and the USA as
separate entities, nations isn't quite the right word, BUT.

Ever since Israel's inception we've (We=Government of the USA) have given
them Millions of dollars a year and now in the last few decades BILLIONS
of dollars A YEAR in forgivable loans (forgiven every year) FOR THEIR
MILITARY PROGRAMS (includes the Nuke program they won't let anyone see, as
in Rogue Nuke Nation, funded and protected by the Government of the USA,
the ONLY country to use Nuclear weapons and waste upon people), BILLIONS,
that is more money every fiscal year, then we use on ALL OUR SOCIAL
PROGRAMS COMBINED, road, fire police medi care/cal etc.

And Israel does with that, exactly what they are being funded to do with
it. Why are the War Protestors so upset with Israel???

If I had a mostly wild carnivore animal living in my house, I'd be insane
to keep asking it to not eat my pet rabbits I let run around.

And that's how I feel, asking Israel to not do, as an American to the
government of Israel, to not do what we fund them to do.

So... the problem doesn't start with Israel, it starts with us, the USA,
giving Israel a Billion plus dollars a year for Military equipment, in
yearly forgivable loans, as long as they use to to purchase weaponry from
US based Military Industrial Complex Industries, which after all, now
accounts for 54% of the jobs in the USA (this takes into consideration the
businesses whose income is from people who work directly for the MIC).

 Green Party: The U.S. must press Israel not to launch a new war on Gaza;
Greens urge an immediate truce and resumption of negotiations

 • The U.S. is ignoring the source of the conflict and chain of incidents
leading up to the current Gaza crisis, say Greens

WASHINGTON, DC -- Green Party leaders said today that the U.S. must
pressure Israel not to resume its war on Palestinians living in Gaza, and
that the illegal blockade and hardship imposed by Israel on Gaza must end.

President Obama and Congress have the clout to stop a repeat of the 2009
Gaza War, in which more than 1300 Palestinians were killed, including 700
civilians, over 300 of them children. Thirteen Israelis were also killed,
of whom three were civilians. This is a 'David and Goliath' fight, with
nuclear-powered Israel acting in disregard for international law against a
dispossessed people living under siege. Israel's assaults on Gaza will not
make Gazans go away or resolve the conflict, said Muhammed Malik, former
co-chair of the Miami-Dade Green Party, who recently spoke at the Students
for Justice in Palestine National Conference at the University of
 Michigan. (2009 Gaza War casualties:
 see http://www.dci-pal.org/english/display.cfm?CategoryId=1DocId=917 and
 figures referenced
 athttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casualties_of_the_Gaza_War)

Green Party leaders noted that targeted assassinations are illegal and
that the airstrike authorized by Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense
Minister Barak that killed Hamas military commander Ahmad al-Jabari also
 killed his 14-year-old son.

The Israeli airstrike ended two days of calm after news that Egypt had
brokered a truce between Israel and Palestinian officials. The truce was
meant to end a surge of violence that resulted in more than 100 missiles
fired out of Gaza and repeated Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip, where
people are already living in conditions comparable to an open-air prison
 (http://www.democracynow.org/2012/11/16/israeli_negotiator_hamas_commander_was_assassinated).

The Obama Administration should press for an immediate ceasefire and
resumption of the negotiations. Claims by Israeli and U.S. officials that
the IDF is trying to avoid Palestinian civilian casualties are not
credible. Washington and the U.S. media have focused on the increased
Palestinian rockets fired from Gaza but are ignoring the chain of
incidents, including killings of Palestinian civilians, that motivated
Hamas to fire rockets out of Gaza, said Jill Stein, the Green Party's
 2012 nominee for President.

The terrorism that Israel is using to maintain the occupation far
outweighs the retaliatory terrorism committed by Hamas. Unless these
assaults can be halted, we'll see another massacre of Gazan civilians and
further deterioration of the city, added Dr. Stein. (For a timeline of

[LAAMN] Meetings Sat 11-17 to free political prisoners, build inter-communal solidarity

2012-11-16 Thread part2001
The Jericho Amnesty Movement to free all political prisoners will hold its
monthly meeting (third Saturday) on Saturday November 17 at 5:00 PM at the
Southern California Library for Social Studies Research, 6120 S. Vermont
Ave., Los Angeles (between Slauson and Gage). The agenda includes the upcoming
Jericho national elections for steering committee officers, and a national
proposal for 3 co-chairs. We will also read and respond to letters from
political prisoners and hunger strikers.

The Jericho meeting will be followed at 6:00 PM by the follow-up gathering of
the Inter-Communal Solidarity Committee which held a successful launch party at
the Library last week for its survival/serve-the-people programs, such as Hood
Health, Break the Lock, the George Jackson Freedom School, and Turning the
Tide. We'll hear from Hood Health about plans for a build-up meeting in its
campaign for community health awareness and empowerment on Saturday, Dec. 1 at
the So Cal Library from 1-4:00 PM.

Please come and invite others prepared to get involved and committed to the
struggle!
