Re: [lace] RE: bone bobbins
Yes, David does tell this story. I actually have it on a an old tape! One day I will transfer it to CD. It is a home recording and not very clear, but you can hear it, and that is the main point. I suspect that Australia was the source but I can not remember the kind person that gave me a copy. [lace] Giraffe/camel/zebra bone bobbin
I emailed David Springett and asked him what the story was. Here's his reply: The real story. I was told by John Cummings, a bobbin maker in Rugby in the 1980's and an expert in bone and ivory, that some of the bobbins made for Joseph Harris of Cockermouth in the 1920's were from Camel bone. When I was giving talks at lace days during the 80's I asked, light heartedly, can anyone get me some Camel bone? Well you know lacemakers, someone somewhere knows somebody who can always help. I was contacted by a lacemaker who's husband was the educational director of London Zoo. She said that as soon as a Camel died, from natural causes, the Zoo would send me a bone. Later that year a large Camel bone arrived. I turned parts of it and found that the bone was exactly the same as bone from any other source. No Camels were hurt during this experiment. We did hear the tale that finger bones from lacemakers' were used for bobbins. Anyone out there prepared to help? David. (Before that last line becomes lacemaking myth...I was only joking). Re: Subject: [lace] new website
Hello Janice, Yes I have found a use for several of your small designs and have worn my poppy with pride for the last two years (adding my money to the collection boxes just the same, of course). I have a pile of 'must have a go at patterns' when time allows, but I end up having to do a prority list. Last year was our 40th anniversary so we concentrated on that project for quite a while of course and are very happy with the finished article. We also have ideas of other items we would like to go with our napkins, but time slips on. I had already made napkins for two of my sisters for special events over the previous 18 months so I am currently making up the last set for my other sister (cant have her feeling left out). Special event cards for friends and family have also to be slotted in, but I keep going through my stash and my books as well as having a play with the design program, can we extend the day to 36 hours instead of 24 please, grin. Jane Partridge was the designer for that particular bookmark and I think has given the location of the pattern, so hopefully all who would like to make it will be able to. DH has been adding a new section to the website to include some of the engraved glass pieces he has created since 1980. He is doing a final tweek after we have proof read it between us, so it should be available to view within an hour or so. The main link is the same and at the base of the site map is the link into his section. So anyone who enjoys artistic work, might well like to see them. Thank you to you and to all the others who have allowed us access to your various patterns which has allowed us to make lovely lace and also to try out a bit of design work of our own. Sue T Hi Sue, DH did a nice job of your website. Lots of lovely lace, you have been busy. I was pleased to see a number of my small designs amongst your lacemaking. So gratifying. I also liked the simple bookmark with the teapots and cups. Where did you find that pattern? I am sure Tamara would enjoy adding that one to her T' collection. RE: [lace] new website
Hello All, I too have completed preliminary work on a website; not as organized as yours Sue. However, I have tried to get as many of the pictures with pattern details but for some pieces I only have a prickings. If anyone can help with the un-credited patterns that would be great. The address is: http://homepage.eircom.net/~rhiannonmann/index.htm Any feedback is appreciated- its amazing how blinded I can be when its my own design. All the links work for me but I would like to know that it is all functional for everyone else. I too love the use of the photo frame edgings but had not considered oval designs for this purpose~ very classical and beautiful. Thank you so much for showing off your range of goodies Sue- although it does cause a dilemma for what I undertake next... Rhiannon Sue said. Lovely work Rhiannon - the horse is beautiful, and quite different from traditional Bucks Point (my daughter would love it...) Where did you get that pattern and the Musical Clef one? They look like two for my to-do list if I can get hold of them! Re: [lace] Giraffe/camel/zebra bone bobbin
Thanks, Jean, From the Master's Mouth comes the Real Story! This is one of those pages to be printed and stuck in David's turning bobbins book. Wonder if Christine has the camel bone bobbin? I'd love to have one... Many of my bobbins are the among the first that David made 'way back when he began and I was living in England. nb sp;n bsp; nbsp; ;nbs p;nb sp;;nbs p;nb sp;n bsp; nbsp; ;nbs p;nb sp;n bsp; nbsp; ;nbs p; Happy Lacemaking,Betty Ann in Roanoke, Virginia USA Mar 6, 2009 04:09:40 AM, j...@nathan54.freeserve.co.uk wrote: I emailed David Springett and asked him what the story was.
