[lace] Lace Magazine

2010-05-08 Thread Daphne Martin
Hello

I also got my copy of the Lace Guild magazine on Tuesday.

In it is a memorial for Pat Payne by her daughter Jo.

Pat was the lacemaker who started Norfolk Lacemakers here in Norwich England
in the 1970`s.

In my opinion is was a lovely thing for Jo to have done for her mum. On the
headstone is Pats name and underneath it is lacemaker.

A fitting tribute indeed.

Hello Pene
I remember from a week or two ago that you said you were entering a design
in the Powerhouse Museum competition. I hope that you got it ready in time.
I also spent several weeks on a design and just got it entered in time. I
wish you luck in getting your entry accepted. I know that if mine is
accepted I will be buying an airline ticket to Australia to see the
exhibition and also to see my new grandchild in Melbourne.

Best wishes from

I remember my father saying how he saw the gentleman being carried out of
the Peacock Hotel at Market Harborough Leicestershire rather the worse for
wear after a day out with a local hunt.

I can't somehow picture him going home to his pillow and bobbins ;o)

LOL! I like that explanation even better! Besides, anyone who has ever
made a lace tablecloth knows that it is no light undertaking. It's a
real endurance test and I doubt that Edward was the type...

Interesting. I tried googling it and discovered that Edward's first
love, Freda Dudley-Ward, was the daughter of a Nottingham lacemaker.
Maybe it was a present from the first girlfriend and Wallis

[lace] Was Coats: Now Twist of Yarn (S or Z)

2010-05-08 Thread Susan Reishus
The direction of spin makes a lot of difference to some lacemakers and
not
much to others depending on how they handle the bobbins on their
pillow. I
personally don't have a problem with either direction of spin
 but some people
do find that one direction or the other tends to unwind
 as they move the
bobbins about. Generally any thread originally
intended for lock-stitch
sewing machines, whether for stitching seams or
embroidery, will be Z spun to
suit the action of the mechanisms and
anything intended for hand sewing, or
bobbin lacemaking, is S spun as
that suits the majority of (right handed)
stitchers. Brenda

***

Additionally, lace knitters do best with an S/Right twist for
German/Continental, and a Z/Left twist for English/Throwers  when knitting.
This often explains inordinate twist and unfurling that must be done with some
knitting styles and yarns.

Just in case it is helpful info for some.  It definitely becomes helpful
information when spinning your own yarn.

Best,
Susan Reishus

Of course it can be different from tatting MC owners :-)

I'm pretty sure that one of the tatting teachers here in US travels on a
motorcycle, full black leather et al. Can't remember her name, not having much
connection to the tatting world but remember seeing her at, I think, the
Hasbrouck Heights IOLI Convention. So, anything is possible and Irene's
sighting could have been for lace.

Wasn't it Karen Bovard (can't remember the spelling of her surname) - I
was going through some old photos the other day, and came across the one
that Rosemarie Peel took of her holding the tatted picture of a
motorbike that she had done... think that was one of the IOLI events
that Rosemarie went over to teach at, but not sure which year (they all
roll into one these days!!!)

I'm presently planning on working another steam loco in lace - bobbin
this time - and if anyone else is into steam locos and wants to see my
photos from the gala at the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway (Porthmadog
- I volunteer there) let me know off list and I'll send you the link.
