Re: [lace] Lace Days in the UK!

2010-11-08 Thread Brenda Paternoster
Bev is so very right!

Two hours driving on an open motorway will take you about 140 miles and more if
you exceed the speed limit. Two hours driving on the congested roads might
only get you 50-60 miles on a good day, 15 miles on a bad day, and on a very
bad day you could be sitting in a traffic jam going nowhere for two hours.

I still haven't received my copy of Lace 140 yet, but looking at the list of
lace days on The Lace Guild website there are a couple that I could get to with
a bit of effort (but they are both in Essex so M25 and Dartford crossing to
negotiate) but none that I will choose to go to.

[lace] finished fan with UK lace

2010-11-08 Thread hottleco
Hello All! I posted photos of my finished Japanese fan to
www.hand-dyedfibers.com, where I purchased the handles last summer. It's in
the gallery section the CQ side features some vintage lace that I purchased
from The Lace Guild stash that Sue Dane brought to summer school. When vintage
lace was discussed awhile back I neglected to mention this resource for
collecting or re-purposing. The guild has small bits of lots of interesting
stuff it is reasonably priced. I decided to try designing a bobbin lace
piece for my other handle but I will need technical assistance from more
experienced lacy friends! One has already sent grid paper doesn't want to
hear any excuses G. Maybe I'll be inspired by sashiko motifs, although a
dragon would be way cool. Hmmm. Sincerely, Susan Hottle, Erie, PA where it's

This can happen in the US too! On Friday night we tried to drive downtown to
see our son's opening night in a trilogy of plays by G B Shaw. In 1 hour and
20 mins we went 10.9 miles and still had 11 mins driving to go. We were then
10 minutes late for the start and turned round and gave up, as they would
not let us in until the 2nd act, and he was in the first of the trilogy
:( We'll try again next Thursday.

I have been demonstrating lace for the last three days at the Chicago
Botanic Garden during the Fine Art of Fiber. It was fun - and more eventful
than usual, with the emergency services called out twice. My Christening
gown was much admired - and I was very pleased to have finished it (with
more than 12 hours to spare!!)

And the best question ever: Is this the tattoo parlour?

Work that one out! Lateral thinking needed

[lace] Crochet cotton give-away

2010-11-08 Thread Sue Babbs
I have been given over 60 new reels of bedspread cotton. This is more than I
can use in a life-time, even if I teach all the kids in church school to use
it! Most of them look as if they need a wash before the finished article can
be used, as the outer layer is not brand new in appearance. All are complete
balls.

So I am offering them to you all. I would like to be reimbursed for the
mailing costs, as they will mount up.

I am keeping some of the spools, but if you want some let me know. There are:

10 reels of Star crochet / bedspread cotton 4 ply art 40 in bright yellow
(almost canary)

9 reels of Star crochet / bedspread cotton 4 ply art 40 in tan leather

3 reels of Star crochet / bedspread cotton 4 ply art 40 in deep pink

1 reel of Star crochet / bedspread cotton 4 ply art 40 in paler pink

1 reel of Star crochet / bedspread cotton 4 ply art 40 in random brown/
yellow and white

2 x 1 oz reels of Columbia Marcelaine 71% virgin wool / 29% rayon in deep blue
(sort of cross between royal and French)

1 x 1 oz reel of Columbia Marcelaine 71% virgin wool / 29% rayon in light
blue/grey

1 reel of Coats knit-cro-sheen (175 yards) in a pale greeny-turquoise shade

1 reel of Coats speed-cro-sheen (100 yards) in pink

1 reel of Coats speed-cro-sheen (100 yards) in spice (pinky-brown)

1 reel of Clark's ONT 'Brilliant' 100 yards in deep blue

3 reels of Aunt Lyons Giant Crochet art 150, 300 yards per reel, color 221 in
random pale green / white

2 reels of South Maid mercerized cotton, 550 yards per reel, color 221 in

1lb / 2700yards of Antique Crochet Cotton plain finish (clean as still covered
in cellophane) in cream

1lb / 2700yards of Antique Crochet Cotton plain finish (clean as still covered

[lace] right vs wrong sides

2010-11-08 Thread Nancy Neff
I've searched the archives but have not found exactly the info I was looking
for, so I'll throw the question out here.

In straight laces, are the different types considered to have a right side and
a
wrong side, with one of the two being uppermost as the lace is worked? For
example, I found an older posting that said that Bucks was sometimes considered
to have a right side, which was uppermost as worked, because the gimp was more
prominent on the uppermost side. Another post said it depended on how the gimps
were worked (and led into a very useful discussion of gimps). What about laces
such as Old Flanders or Binche that don't have gimp threads?

In cases with raised work, such as tallies on top of cloth stitch areas in
Beds,
the right side is obvious to me. But what about straight laces with no raised
work?

And is it related to whether the footside is on the left or right as it is
worked?

Thanks for your help!

Question for Catherine. Was all the background netting on the Snow Queen

hand. Wish I could get my tension that good.

[lace] Irish lace

2010-11-08 Thread tess parrish
Thanks to John Cropper and the helpful people at the University of
Arizona, this email has just arrived to me, concerning Irish lace. I
am hoping that there will be people on the list who will write Sorcha
with encouragement and information. Two subsequent emails from her
have let me know that she may be planning a lace exhibit in the near
future from the holdings at the university of Kansas, and I have
suggested that she scan and send me some examples of what seems to be
a nice collection of laces there. I went through the library holdings
and found a couple of books that I haven't scanned, so am hoping to
find them somewhere and to add them to the Archives.

Sorcha sounds like a lovely lively young woman and I hope she
discovers for herself not only the history of lace in Ireland, but the
fun of giving it a try!

Thanks to any and all for your help.

Tess (tess1...@aol.com) in Maine USA, where all the pretty leaves have
fallen and been raked up. A new season begins!
---
  Good Afternoon University of Arizona,

I found this PDF file online, with your name and Computer Science
department associated with it in the url:
  http://www.cs.arizona.edu/patterns/weaving/books/cas_ilce.pdf

I am an Irish Citizen, from a part of Ireland referenced in this
article, currently researching the origins of a large quantity of
unidentified lace objects in University of Kansas' Spencer Museum of
Art collection. I am, without being an expert, quite confident a
sample of the lace comes from New Ross, County Wexford, Ireland.

I would like to enquire about where the above PDF was scanned from,
or what the origins of this document may be. It looks like it was
published in a book, in which case I am curious to know if you could
send me any information on the title, author, publisher etc? It could
help me (as it contains photographs of Irish lace) identify or
eliminate where this lace is from.

I am also in the process of curating a small installation, where I
hope to feature some of this lace - and ideally another copy of this
book, or with permission, this PDF file to accompany the lace display.
The exhibition focuses primarily on Irish literature and art, but the
lace would be a great addition - especially if I can validate its
origins, or even pose a possible origin.

Any information you are willing to share, or if you have a standard
protocol for sharing texts such as this one, I would like to hear more.
Thank you in advance for any assistance - or forwarding contact
information - you can provide.

  Sincerely,
  Sorcha Hyland

(Youth Family Outreach Coordinator, Spencer Museum of Art,
University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS).

[lace] right vs wrong sides

2010-11-08 Thread Lorelei Halley
Nancy
I think you are right, that the only time a right and wrong side occurs in
straight laces is if there are tallies lying on top of a cloth stitch or half
stitch section. I suppose it is possible to have a right and wrong side with
gimp, if the gimp is handled in such a way as to make it more prominent. The
way to do that would be to pass the gimp through the weaver going in one
direction, but to just lay the weavers on top of the gimp, without stitching
the gimp, when going in the other direction. In this case which is the right
side would be the side where the gimp lies on top of the weaver pair for part
of its journey. But I am not aware of a straight lace where this is regularly
part of the work. But I don't claim to know everything.

I have seen a part lace collar with a very raised gimp of this type, I thought
it might be related to Bruges.
http://lynxlace.com/bobbinlacerevivalerapart.html Go about 2/3 down that
page to the collar #180. Unfortunately my photo isn't close up enough to
demonstrate this clearly. But I remember studying the piece as I photoed it.
That thick gimp, like packing twine, was prominent on the right side, but
scarcely visible on the wrong side. And this effect was achieved in the
manner I described above.

It occurs to me that there might be another reason for a wrong side in
straight lace. If you have gimp outlining parts of a floral design, the
motifs will end periodically and the gimps will be crossed underneath the
motif and cut off (to be restarted at the top of the next repeat). You would
want those cut crossed gimps not to be too visible on the right side.
Therefore in this situation the side which faces you as you work would be the
wrong side, because that is where the crossed gimps are cut. From the other
side the crossed cut gimps would not be so visible. But it wouldn't matter
which side the foot is on. It would be the crossed cut gimps. The foot goes
with English or continental working methods and is not the important factor
here.

[lace] cabled gimps

2010-11-08 Thread Lorelei Halley
Lesley
I have not heard the term cabled gimp but I have seen something which might
be described that way. In Russian tape lace gimps are sometimes run down the
center of the narrow tape and there are several ways of working them.
Sometimes they are twisted or crossed over each other, or the weavers go
through them in an unusual way, and this creates a sort of cabled appearance.
I found photos of this in DMC's DIE KLOEPPELSPITZEN, the 2nd volume of
their bobbin lace, and in entirely on tape lace (braid lace). The book below
is the one, and it is available from the website below as a free download. I
don't know exactly what part has what you need. But it is in there. I have
the book on my shelf.

Re: [lace] right vs wrong sides

2010-11-08 Thread Cindy Rusak
Hi All,

Mirecourt lace carries a gimp prominently on one side. I took a course at
the IOLI convention in Rockford, IL with Deborah Beever on Art Nouveau tile
laces using some Mirecourt gimp techniques. We caught the gimp with the
weavers going one way and skipped it going back. I used this same technique
recently when making dragonfly wings for a piece of lace being put on a
corset I made for the Needlework Festival in Toronto.

Re: [lace] right vs wrong sides

2010-11-08 Thread Nancy Neff
Thank you, Lorelei! Your explanations make a lot of sense, especially the bit
about ending gimps crossed and cut-off. In laces without gimps I couldn't see
what any difference there'd be, but I still have a lot to learn.

You mention that the side the footside is on goes with English or continental
working methods--it this true even for all the various point ground laces?
that
Bucks, Downton, etc. would all be worked with the the footside on the right,
and
even similar continental laces such as Tonder or Lille would be worked with the
footside on the left? That English channel is a lot wider than it looks, isn't
it!?!

Thanks again. I always appreciate the thoroughness of your answers!

I think you are right, that the only time a right and wrong side occurs in
straight laces is if there are tallies lying on top of a cloth stitch or half
stitch section. I suppose it is possible to have a right and wrong side with

[lace] Question for Liz Ligeti about her needlelace

2010-11-08 Thread karpap
Liz,

Just went to the Guild of Needle lace site. Just loved your lovely pieces.
Your two oval pieces
really caught my eye, with the way you had framed them. I thought the braided
ribbon around
the outside edge was very clever. Are there instructions for this braid
someplace? I'm really
fasinated by this and would like to try it

Amazing!! She sets the standard SO high!!

I have not seen the actual piece, but I have a post card with it on, and so
I can see the ground clearly. It is even and just about perfect!

Awesome (In the proper meaning of the word!!) And I believe the piece is
about A4 size, if I remember correctly.

Please beware when you buy any washing machine that has a back pipe emptying
system ( the type where the water outlet pipe just sits in another outlet to
the outside drain) because I have recently had a flooded kitchen , on
investigation where the water was coming from my husband discovered that the
pipe was almost completely clogged with soap powder residue and pieces of
towelling thread etc.We have now replaced both pipes and I will be
checking them regularly from now on.

The Milky Bar Kid is a long running advertisement in Britain for a
chocolate bar - Milky bar by name! While the child playing the part changes
every
few years he is usually fair haired with specs and is wearing a cowboy

lasted. As far as I can tell little boys do not play cowboys and Indians any
more.

Although I am shy by a couple months of being on the Baby Boomers list, I
still consider myself on the boomers list because I remember most of what

Thanks for the fun quiz!!!
