Re: [lace] Beginning Threads
It depends on the scale of the pricking you use - Presencia Finca 30 is a lot finer than DMC Cordonnet 30. Finca 20 would be a nearer alternative to Cordonnet 30 Handy Hands Lizbeth 20 or Anchor Artiste 20 are both very similar to Cordonnet 30. If a softer thread is acceptable then go for a Perle 8 although that won't take the punishment of constant reverse lacing that some beginners need to do. Equivalents to the finer Finca 30 are Venus 70 (not 80) or marginally finer is DMC Special Dentelles 80. Brenda I start students with #8 perlé and then go to Finca 30 (Spanish thread) which now comes in several colours or if they are a quick study and I want to use colour DMC fil Dentelle 80 or Venus 80. The last two come in many vibrant colours and small balls of 5 grams which don't break the bank if you want to use several colours in a piece. However, I don't know if these threads would be available to you. Suggest pestering your suppliers to stock them. Good luck! (snip) Lacemakers in my area used to start beginners with DMC Cordonet 30 thread, which used to come in many colors. Now it's available only in white and ecru, at least in the USA. I still have some spools of colored thread left, but it won't last forever. Besides, the beginners will want to get a supply of their own. What thread do you use with beginners? Has anyone found an alternate thread to DMC Cord.30? I have a few spools of Lizbeth thread, with varigated colors. This works for some patterns but not all. Oops, pressed the wrong button! What we were going to say was that the Advent calendar picture and pattern for 2nd December was sent to us by Sue Turnbull, a member of the list. She sent us one for last year's calendar too and we'd like to say a big thank you to her. This is the thirteenth year that we've produced the Advent calendar and finding new pictures and patterns isn't always easy. Re: [lace] Beginning Threads
Hi, Thank you for your e-mail and information. However, nowhere in my e-mail have I suggested that Finca 30 was the equivalent of Cordonnet 30. Only what I tend to use with my students. There is little difference between the DMC fil dentelle and the Venus even though one is 80 and one 70. Re: [lace] Beginning Threads
Dear Joepie Although you didn't say Finca 30 was an equivalent to DMC 30, on the other hand you didn't say it wasn't, and it was an alternate thread to replace DMC30 that Alice was asking for. So I can quite see why Brenda was just making it clear that the two threads are different thickness and that patterns will need to be altered accordingly. Don't forget that these posts are read by lacemakers of all abilities, and it would be a frustrating shame for someone who had got it in their head that Finca 30 was a good substitute for DMC 30, only to find that it was working up too fine. Also for beginners or people who haven't used these threads before, DMC Fil a Dentelle 80 (30wpc) is actually about 10 percent thinner than the Venus 70 (27wpc), so if you are using a pricking where the DMC is towards being on the thick side, you may not find that Venus is a satisfactory substitute without enlarging the pricking a little. As always, although Brenda's Threads for Lace is an invaluable aid to lacemaking, it is still a good idea to work a sample for any new thread/major project combination. Re: [lace] Lace Guild Advent calendar pattern
Now I am blushing, grin. I have to say that since I joined arachneI have enjoyed seeing and having access to the different patterns submitted by various people over that time, so its nice to be able to give something back to others. If I am to donate anything different any other year, however, I better get my thinking, designing ideas brewing as I only have more of similar. BTW, I must add to that they my ideas have only come to fruition with the help of Daphne Martin a couple of years ago when she helped teach me via internet, how to design these baubles, I have had much fun since, designing and making them. Re: [lace] Beginning Threads
Jacquie's comment is so right - although the wraps/cm measurement is very convenient for comparing thicknesses it doesn't tell you much about how a thread will work up. The number of plies, the direction (and firmness) of spin, and of course the type of fibre all contribute to how a thread works up. Experience does help, but working a sample is the only way to really know what a thread is like to work with and how the finished lace looks and feels. [lace] bobbin line drawings
Hello All! To Brian--thank you for posting the drawings. I was especially intrigued by the s'Gravenmoer Mirecourt shapes. Pretty different. It seems like there was some effort at scale in the tables, until I saw the Slovenian Idrija bobbins. A friend gave me some lovely Slovenian bobbins last year they are shaped like one of the pictures but much larger, maybe 1.5+ times. Her family emigrated to the US so they are authentic. Is this a case of the bobbin shape remaining the same across a range of sizes?? Perhaps someone who knows more will share. In the meantime, the tables are a super handy resource easily printed out for future reference. Sincerely, Susan Hottle, in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida for the winter. Lace pillows were sadly left behind in Pennsylvania--no room in the SUV--but I brought Mechlin bobbins Delicas so beaded bobbins are in my future! - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Thanks for the images, Brian. The writing appears to be Dutch (that's the only language I've seen ij as a vowel sound). Subject: Fw: T'WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS - --- - --- - --- D -- Subject: FW: T'WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS T'WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, HE LIVED ALL ALONE, IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE, MADE OF PLASTER AND STONE. I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY, WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE, AND TO SEE JUST WHO, IN THIS HOME, DID LIVE. I LOOKED ALL ABOUT, A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE, NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS, NOT EVEN A TREE. NO STOCKING BY MANTLE, JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND, ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES, OF FAR DISTANT LANDS. WITH MEDALS AND BADGES, AWARDS OF ALL KINDS, A SOBER THOUGHT, CAME THROUGH MY MIND. FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT, IT WAS DARK AND DREARY, I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER, ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY. THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING, SILENT, ALONE, CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR, IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME. THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE, THE ROOM IN DISORDER, NOT HOW I PICTURED, A TRUE BRITISH SOLDIER. WAS THIS THE HERO, OF WHOM I'D JUST READ? CURLED UP ON A PONCHO, THE FLOOR FOR A BED? I REALISED THE FAMILIES, THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT, OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS, WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT. SOON ROUND THE WORLD, THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY, AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE, A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY. THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM, EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR, BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS, LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE. I COULDN'T HELP WONDER, HOW MANY LAY ALONE, ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE, IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME. THE VERY THOUGHT BROUGHT, A TEAR TO MY EYE, I DROPPED TO MY KNEES, AND STARTED TO CRY. THE SOLDIER AWAKENED, AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE, SANTA DON'T CRY, THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE; I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM, I DON'T ASK FOR MORE, MY LIFE IS MY GOD, MY COUNTRY, MY CORPS.. THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER, AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP, I COULDN'T CONTROL IT, I CONTINUED TO WEEP. I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS, SO SILENT AND STILL, AND WE BOTH SHIVERED, FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL. I DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE, ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT, THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOUR, SO WILLING TO FIGHT. THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER, WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE, WHISPERED, CARRY ON SANTA,
