'Pharaoh' would possibly fit into the religious or biblical category. Though I've seen them with King Pharaoh or Pharaoh King - which can be read either way but I would think probably the latter. Hi Arachnids I recently agreed to join a team working on a Teachers Development Program for one of the major lace organisations. As part of my input I am putting together a booklet of tips and anecdotes, humerous and serious, that may help budding teachers. I am sure my greatest resource is right here. I expect many Arachnids will be interested if answers are posted in 'Lace Digest' and I will also be delighted to receive them directly if you prefer to use my email. To help keep the reading light I will be including my cartoon of the 'Lace Student', any cartoons that you have drawn yourself and any other ideas will be very welcome. [lace] Mako Thread sizes
I have 3 spools of Mako Egyptian Cotton thread. the spools/cones have different colored plastic core-bases: gray, green (sz. 40?) and orange. Does anyone know what the size of the threads are based on the core colors? The only other packaging on the spools was a plastic shrink wrap. Although, the green one must have had a sz. 40 marking somehow, but the other 2 are not noted. Any help would be appreciated. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. For help, write to arachne.modera...@gmail.com
Re: [lace] Teachers
To get this posting started, here is my latest funny story! When demonstrating bobbin lace, the correct answer to Is this the tattoo parlour? is Yes. I found this out this year. A mother had left her two daughters with me while she had gone to see the rest of the exhibition. She then fainted and when she came round sent someone else to get them. Unfortunately she didn't remember the term bobbin lace and said tatting demonstration to the man, who misheard that as tattoo demonstration! [lace] Showing lacemaking on Larkrise to Candleford
Queenie has just been shown actually making lace. The actress seemed to know what she's doing, assuming it was her hands. She was even putting pins in after a few stitches. The lace coming off the pillow was a Bucks Point edging about an inch wide. She described to Ruby Pratt how they all used to sit together in one cottage making lace, which they wrapped in blue paper and took to a fair once a year to sell. Then she showed Ruby how to do it by having Ruby sit in front of her (almost on her lap) with the pillow on Ruby's lap and guiding Ruby's hands. She showed her how to do whole stitch. The most exposure lacemaking has had in a long while. The section in Edwardian Farm a few weeks ago was very short and didn't show much of the process, although Pat Perryman gave a bit of the history of earning a living making bobbin lace in Devon. Re: [lace] Showing lacemaking on Larkrise to Candleford
She was certainly moving the bobbins correctly in the wide shot, I noticed however that the close up hands were much quicker and more confident in their movement. My DH suggested that I could perhaps be a lacemaking stunt double for such things. :o) I noticed the whole stitch thing too particularly as the bobbins she was working with would have been in the ground section of the lace. Still nice to see lacemaking shown on TV. Claire Allen www.bonitocrafts.co.uk Crafty stuff I want to show off. Jean in Poole, Dorset, UK Although I'm not a very experienced lace maker I don't think that those were the actresses hands. When the hands were shown they moved quite fast, but when the actress was shown she wasjust rolling the bobbins about and putting pins in. She put two pins in at what seemed like quite random places. The contrast between the two views of Queenie were too different, I felt, to be the same person. I'm quite happy to be proved wrong however. It was lovely, tho', to see lacemaking take such a prominent place in a popular tv programme. Re: [lace] Lace in Larkrise to Candleford
The first pieces that Queenie showed were edgings of Bedfordshire lace but the piece she took from the basket was definitely Maltese - showing the tell tale cross. On the pillow she had a nice Bucks Point edging in progress. It was interesting that Queenie had two pillows - one bolster and the other square! I personally found it quite poignant when she was wrapping the pieces in blue tissue to put away. [lace] Re: Metallic threads question.
Hi, I wish to thank each and everyone that responded with answers. The hints were great. I've tried a number of them. I think I like using the low stick masking tape (also know as painters tape) the best, for attaching the beginning thread to the bobbin. I tried the little hair clips and that was fine but at times the clips got in the way. As for the hitch - - The wooden hooked bobbins work pretty well, as yet, only have three pairs of those. Will continue with all your ideas. Thanks again to every one. -- Patsy A. Goodman AKA Queen Tat Pat Red Hat Lacers Pres. [lace] Larkrise to Candleford lace
Some years ago Shirley Gee's play ASK FOR THE MOON was performed here in Chicago, and I was asked to be the lace consultant for that production. Elizabeth Kurella and I jointly served that purpose for a performance of the same play the following year in Michigan. I mention this because the situation was similar to consulting for a TV show. You have actors whose primary purpose is the drama they are enacting. No one expects them to be lacemakers. So what the consultant has to do is decide what gestures to teach that will give verisimilitude to the performance. It is a question of juggling priorities. If you spend all your time teaching them to make lace authentically you won't be much use overall. You also have to decide how much the actors and the director need to know about the lace world then, and our attitudes to that world now, so that their performance is accurately grounded. I have had lacemakers tell me that if they had been chosen as consultant (with the clear idea that they would have been better at it) they would have insisted that the actors learn how to make Honiton lace, while speaking in dialect and performing, live. Instead, I decided they needed to know something about the history of lacemaking in the 19th century and its economic condition -- how the industry worked. They needed to know the life condition of most of the lacemakers. I thought it important that they not overlay modern ideas and attitudes onto an age that was vastly different from our own. I haven't seen the current Larkrise being discussed (we get it in Chicago on the city college public broadcasting station). But the issues involved aren't just teaching lace making. It is the props, how a lacemaker would move holding a pillow, how she would handle it or pick it up, how she would handle a piece of lace or a Honiton veil, what her attitude is towards the work she does and its product. For those of you who have access to old IOLI bulletins, I wrote an article about this for them in Volume 11 #2 winter 1991. You might find it interesting.
