Re: [lace] Re Kate and wearing lace
I am hoping that once the new ness of the job wears off she will relax a little. The stress of the last 6 months must have been huge with the media watching every move. She is an attractive young woman and shows off her elegant style and the beautiful lace nicely. I hope she will be a good boost to our clothing industry and that lots of our less than elegant young women will attempt to follow her, without obscession. I also feel that some of us mature grin women could still wear and do wear lace which draws the eye. I saw some lovely pieces worn on clothing from a small flower to a collar, at a fairly recent lace day. I wonder where else some of the arachne people wear their lace apart from lace days or weddings?? Perhaps you would share that with us. Re: [lace] LaceNews Channel on YouTube
Lovely! Thank you for all your hard work in organising this. It will be most helpful, now that you've made it so easy to find these videos. I've already spent some time watching in amazement; it's all so fascinating - I never knew there were so many differences. To be able to see all these things makes such an enormous difference, and helps me understand things that could never fully be explained in words. Many thanks for being so generous with your time and talents. Lorelei - I agree completely with your comments! But one question: as I'm very ignorant about YouTube, could you tell me why there is the option to Subscribe? I seem to be able to watch without doing that. When I was in England in April I bought a couple of t-shirts at Sainsbury's. When I got home, I found that one of them was a little low (v-necked). I made a little triangular modesty of Idrija lace so now it is much more comfortable for me to wear. I also have a couple of t-shirts to which I've added lace and wear them often. One t-shirt gets thrown in the washing machine, the other gets washed by hand, not because of the lace, but because of the t-shirt. [lace] Re: Kate
Kate is purportedly 100 lbs. and at 5'10, that is very thin, even for a model. I am that height myself, and with a fashion design background and knowledge of modeling, etc. that standard is typically 125 lbs. and a tough weight to maintain at that height. As mentioned, she is a UK 6, which is a 2 US, though people I know who are that height and weigh 130, wear a size 4-6. Ten pound increments used to be typical per size (but that has changed several times so the old 12 is now about a 6). Also, television puts on 10-15 lbs., so if she causes consternation when viewing on TV or online, know that she is slimmer than you think. The next concern is that overly slim women tend to have trouble conceiving. Of course lace is the trend now. I don't see Kate as a fashion plate, but the delight is in how she is walking the line of dignity in her dress, with edges of fashion. She also has a nice taste for color, or lack thereof (neutrals). The lace is pretty, but I think there are even more exciting applications that could be done. I love that it is a nod to the fact that royalty has always help subsidize the lace industry, and the current trend helps fund that replicated behavior. Overall, the best of it is that she seems like a truly nice person. We need more stellar examples of that to the world. Malvery, That sounds lovely, but I dont think I have any nice enough t-shirts around to show off beautiful lace to its best, so perhaps I need to keep my eyes open, or look at my wardrobe a bit better:-) Do you find fine lace washes better or bigger grid ? [lace] Music and Lace
Dear Nathalie and other spiders the most immediate connection I can think of is that Mozart's mother is said to have made lace. There is a portrait of her holding up a piece of lace as if she is proud of it (see Google images). As others have said, that was the great age of lace in dress - I love the idea of piano playing being influenced by full lace cuffs! Mozart certainly wore them. I don't think that size matters too much. You do need to stitch it all around so that it is firmly attached. One t-shirt has a piece of Honiton and the other has three pieces of Milanese - same design, different braids. Both were made in fairly fine thread. Re: [lace] Music and Lace
For me it's not the lace that the people wear but the fact that lace is in the way that it is made musical. For sometime I've thought that the scoring for music is very much like our prickings. And the way that I manipulate the bobbins is for me similar to playing any stringed instrument or even the piano. [lace] lacemaker patterns wanted
I am looking for patterns of lacemakers making lace. I know there are several around. A simple line-drawing can also be turned into lace fairly easily. Some needlepoint patterns can be converted to bobbin lace. I have the Kortelahti pattern that's in one of her books. I've been given two or three that I'm not sure of the original source. I just made a lacemaker based on a paper cutting that was printed in a 1994 IOLI Bulletin. It was a fun challenge. Do you have a pattern you can share with meor tell me what book to look in? Size is not an issue. I have several low necked T shirts, so I made an edging in Gutermann sewing machine thread if I remember correctly, and stitched it onto a piece of fabric was darted at the sides and had elastic across the back, so it sat over my bust (which is 'well defined'), and gave me some modesty!! It has been well worn and washed in the machine. The pattern is Dotty (pg 93) in the book Torchon Lace for Today by Jennifer Fisher. I wear lace - to lace days, demonstrations, and whenever it seems appropriate. If you've got it - Flaunt it!!! I have collar corners, and collars and a neck tie (Mincoff Marriage - Saxony Guipure lace) as well as 2 plastrons of Mixed lace, - and have worn the Mixed lace Table runner, tied up and worn as cap lappets!! (Last year at the convention banquet in Portland!!!) I wore a dress cap (cover of the original Barbara Underwood book) to the ALG week of workshops, and was amazed at the number of people who stopped and spoke to me. I did the same at Portland last year at IOLI convention, - and plan to do so again this year at Bethesda, - though I am working on making a Knotted lace cap this time. We will see if I can get it finished in time - doubtful, though!! The bobbin lace cap is navy polycotton, and this one is in Grape coloured Lizbeth Crochet cotton.
